Perishable Goods are items liable to perish, decay or spoilrapidly.
All of them have to be carried in precisely definedtemperature ranges.

Good News:India is the leading producer of fruits in the worldat 32 milliontonnes (MT) annually.In vegetables, it is second in the world (after China), producing 71MT per year.
Bad News:o As high as 40 per cent of the fruits and vegetables is wasted .
The reason ?o Yawning gaps in the cold chain.
o Absence of a cold chain to preserve fruits and vegetables.o Cold storage capacities are insufficient.o Cold storages in close proximity of farms dont exist.o Temperature-controlled transportation extremely rare.

R EASONS FAVOURING I NDIAN COLD CHAINI NDUSTRY
O rganized retail - Expected to be a massive $30-billion pie by 2010.
Cold chain industry is estimated to be Rs 10,000-15,000 crore, growing at 20-25 per cent and is expected to touch Rs 40,000 crore by 2015.
Willingness of customers to buy imported fruits, vegetables,etc CE O ,Future Logistics.
Cold chain capacity in the organised sector is around 60,000 tonnes and willgrow almost 40 per cent by 2010 - Ravi Kannan, CE O , Snowman FrozenFoods.
Private equity players, Indian aswell as foreign, have shown keeninterest to invest in cold chaincompanies Pranav Adani, DirectorAdani Group.
