Objective of the project

• Increase the knowledge-base on application of Koop wells as small-scale RBF systems in rural Uttarakhand, India

• Improve the design and efficiency of existing Koop wells• Develop recommendations for coupling RBF (Koop wells) with robust stand-alone

solar-powered inline-electrolysis (for disinfection) in rural areas • Investigate the potential of RBF by a non-perennial river for a small-scale

decentralised water supply scheme

Activities carried out during the period of the grant

Koop wells:• Construction of 1 new Koop with improved filter-media grading, layering and geotextile• Determination of travel time of bank filtrate by tracer experiments• Measurement of discharge of Koops during different flow conditions• Determination of coliform bacteria indicator counts and other water quality parameters

Investigation of the potential for RBF by a non-perennial river:• Evaluation of hydrogeological boundary conditions (water levels, stream-aquifer interaction,

pumptests), water sampling and evaluating of critical water quality parameters,• Numerical modelling to simulate the groundwater flow-field and portion of bank filtrate extracted

by a near river-side well• Assessment of water quality from Koops & RBF well to apply disinfection by inline-electrolysis

and developing recommendations for coupling of Koop wells (pre-treatment) with inline-electrolysis (post-treatment)

Main outcomesKoop wells in Uttarakhand:• The yield and travel time of Koops strongly fluctuate• Water flowing directly from above into the Koops reduces the travel time significantly• Finding active ways to improve the cleaning performance of the Koops• Establishment of methods to collect data of Koop wells for further investigations

Coupling of RBF and anodic oxidation systems:• Coupling of Koops to inline-electrolysis disinfection is necessary as a pre-treatment to remove

pathogens and turbidity more effectively by inline-electrolysis (AO-system)• A feasibility plan for installation a AO system was prepared for decentralised water supply• Structural stability analysis of the photovoltaic panels of the AO system in Julo village was

done, using Indian standards
