Having your period can sometimes be inconvenient, for

example if you’re on holiday or taking exams, or if it’s a

special occasion like your wedding. Asda Period Delay

service can give you access to treatment which will delay

your period until you stop taking it.

Period Delay Service

Period Delay Treatment availableSome women might use the contraceptive pill to delay their period. For those who do not use contraceptives, Norethisterone tablets can sometimes be used to delay the onset of menstruation.

How long do you need to take the treatment for?Take one tablet three times daily, starting three days before your period is due. Continue taking the tablets until you are happy to start your period (do not exceed 2 weeks). Your period should start 2-3 days after you stop treatment.

What are the side-effects of the tablets?Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects are less likely to occur if the tablets are only taken for a short period of time and most women do not encounter any problems during treatment.

Side effects to watch out for include;• Migraines or very bad headaches• Jaundice• Increase in blood pressure• Allergic (hypersensitive) reactions,• severe itching• Changes in sense of smell/touch/•eyesight/hearing/speech• Symptoms of blood clot

For more information about side effects, please refer to the the patient leafl et supplied with your medication.

If you experience any side effects or if you become pregnant while taking the tablets you should stop taking them immediately and contact your doctor/pharmacist/nurse.

Should I inform my GP?It is important that your GP has an overview of any medicine you take. If you are supplied Norethisterone 5mg tablets please use this leafl et.

Who can use the service? To use this service, you must be female, aged 18 to 55 and not using the contraceptive pill, or any other hormonal contraception.*

Among those who should not take norethisterone are patients who:• Are 56 or over and want to delay

your period• Are pregnant• Are allergic to norethisterone tablets• Suffered from jaundice during

pregnancy• Suffer from irregular vaginal

bleeding• Suffer from a disturbance of liver

function• Suffer from thrombosis or have a

history of thrombosis in the family

How does the Period Delay Service work?

Our Period Delay Treatment Norethisterone is a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone. It works by artifi cially keeping your natural progesterone levels up which stops your womb lining from shedding and delays your period.

Norethisterone must be taken 3 times a day for every day you wish to delay your period (up to 16 days maximum). You must start to take Norethisterone 3 days before your period is due to start and you should get your period 2 or 3 days after you stop taking Norethisterone.

It should be noted, however, that Norethisterone is not a form of contraception, so alternative methods of contraception may need to be taken if appropriate.

How does the service work? The Period Delay Service is a private medical service meaning you can purchase the tablets without a pre-scription.

In the privacy of the Pharmacy consultation room the Pharmacist will assess whether you could benefi t from taking the tablets.
