What is the disease?

Stroke is a acute non-infectious disease.

What causes the disease

• A stroke is a condition where a blood clot or ruptured artery or blood vessel interrupts blood flow to an area of the brain.

• A lack of oxygen and glucose flowing to the brain leads to the death of brain cells and brain damage, often resulting in an impairment in speech, movement, and memory.

Who is at risk?

• The majority of people who suffer from stroke lead a sedentary life style, suffer from high blood pressure, may be obese or may smoke cigarettes

• The chance of having a stroke approximately doubles for each decade of life after the age of 55. While stroke is common among the elderly, a lot of people under 65 also have strokes.

Symptoms of stroke

• Sudden numbness, paralysis, or weakness in your face arm or leg especially on only one side of your body

• New problems with walking and balance• Sudden vision changes, drooling or slurred speech, new

problems speaking or under standing simple statements• Sudden severe headache that is different from past

headache

How is it treated

• Ischemic Stroke treatment focuses on restoring blood flow to the brain

• If one arrives to the hospital right after the symptoms begin, doctors may be able to use a medicine that dissolves the blood clots

• Hemorrhagic Stroke can be hard to treat doctors may have to perform surgery or other treatments to stop bleeding and or reduce pressure on the brain.

How can the disease be prevented (Primary)?

• Don’t smoke, smoking can double your risk of a stroke (second hand smoke too!)

• Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fish, fruits, vegetables, beans. Eat less salt!

• Try to do moderate activity at least two and a half hours of exercise a day.

How can the disease be prevented (Secondary)?

• Visit your doctor for early diagnosis

How can the disease be prevented (Tertiary)?

• Medications— Advil if doctor requires it

• Exercise— exercise about 1 hour to 1 and 30 minutes each day

• Diet— eat a lot of protein and stay away from sugars

• Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke. Every 3.1 minutes, someone dies of one. Stroke killed nearly 6,900 people in Illinois in 2003 and is the third leading cause of death, ranking behind diseases of the heart and all forms of cancer.

• The death rate for stroke is 79.8 percent higher for African-American women than white women
