Raw Materials
- Fossil fuels are formed from ancient organic
matter exposed to extreme heat and pressure over
millions of years.
- Fossil fuels are preserved under surface of the
earth and are not renewable.
-Types of fossil fuels:
Coal Petroleum / Crude oil Natural Gas

Coal
- United State has the most abundant supply of coal
in the world.
-Mining is necessary in order to extract coal.
-Coal miners can be trapped underground or killed
by hazardous gases.

Petroleum
-Middle east has the most abundant supply of oil.
-Percentage of world's oil supply per country: Saudi
Arabia 25%, Iraq 11%, Iran 8%, UEA 9%,
Kuwait 9%, and Libya 2%.

Natural gas Energy Generation
-Burned and used to turn steam turbines.
-Used to warm water for domestic applications
such as to power stoves, sometimes used to
power automobiles, etc.

Coal's Environmental Impact
- Contaminates ecosystem's soil.
- Scrubbing process releases water
contaminated with sludge and ash. Ash could
be used to form cement, asphalt, and drywall.
- 65 to 67% of heat is released into
environment.

Oil's Environmental Impact
- Several health risks.
- 2010 bp oil spill caused severe environmental
damage.
- Releases incompletely burned compounds when
burned. Released compounds can be used inprocess to make carbonate building materials.

Natural Gas's Environmental
Impact
- Cleanest of all fossil fuels.
- Produces greenhouse gases such as methane.
Methane can be burned to produce heat, which is
converted into energy.
