WALTER J. DUZMAL - Tevye This is Walter's first appearance with WVLOA, but heis a veteran performer in the Bay Area. Some of his favorite roles are Jigger in"Carousel", Shamus Tobin in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", Harry in "Never TooLate", Baron Von Trapp in "The Sound Of Music", Leslie Bromhead in "No SexPlease, We're British"; but his most coveted role is the one he performs in thisproduction. It truly is an answer to his "Sabbath Prayer" A native of Chicago, heattended Northwestern & Loyola Universities and is currently the Broker & SalesManager of Subdivision Sales for Pinn Brothers Construction Co. His unfulfilledwishes are to play Willie Lohman in "Death Of A Salesman" and in his retirement totravel extensively with his wife. He enjoys oil painting, sketching, Big Band musicand nostalgic radio programs from the past. Welcome, Walter, we are glad we wereable to give you the opportunity to play Tevye.

MARGE HAND - Golde Due to her involvement with the Quota Club, Marge hasbeen absent from our stage for two years when she last appeared as Mrs. Harcourtin "Anything Goes", but she is back for her 23rd production with WVLOA, andrepeats the role she performed in the first "Fiddler On The Roof" that WVLOApresented. She says now that she has completed her term as Governor of 12thDistrict Quota International, a service organization which shatters silence for thehearing impaired, she can return to the theatrical activities she loves so much. Hermajor supporter is her husband, Ed, who is also one of the pillars of this Association, and with whom she celebrates their 34th Anniversary on closing night. Marge alsoperforms regularly with Mystery By Design and is a self-employed ComputerServices Contractor. With three daughters and a new granddaughter to fuss overand babysit once in awhile, it seems they are on the go from "Sunrise to Sunset".She also celebrates her silver anniversary with "The Overtures" this year.Congratulations, Margel

JULIE COLGROVE - Tzeitel This marks Julie's sixth production for WVLOA, hermost recent was her ERMA award-winning performance as Maria Von Trapp in"The Sound Of Music". Shealso won an ERMA for her portrayal of Nellie Forbush in"South Pacific". Our regular theater-goers have seen her as Bonnie in "AnythingGoes", Ruth in "Wonderful Town", and Meg in "Brigadoon". She has also appearedin "Guys & Dolls" and "Annie Get Your Gun" for SCP and in "South Pacific" and"Fiddler On The Roof" for SJCLO. A graduate of Fremont High School inSunnyvale, she holds a BA in Art History from New York University and is a travelconsultant for Travel Expressions in Los Altos. She became her own "Matchmaker"in New York where she met her husband, Tom, and brought him back to Californiawith her. We're so pleased she didn't choose to remain in New York; we would havemissed all her talents and wonderful versatilityl!

ANNEKA VAN MASTRIGT - Hodel Another of those rare California natives, Annekawas born in Los Angeles and is of Dutch descent. This is her second appearancewith WVLOA - you may not recognize her with clothes on (she played Sister Sophiain "The Sound Of Music") instead of a habit. Her credits also include supportingroles in "Hello Doily!", "Oklahoma", "Guys And Dolls", "Chicago", "La Boheme","Arsenic & Old Lace", "Midsummer Night's Dream", and "David & Lisa". Shestudied voice at San Jose State for four years and is currently a travel consultantwith Westmoor Travel as well as an ice skating instructor at Ice Capades Chalet. One of her theatrical goals is to play Maria in "The Sound Of Music" and we are verycertain she has the potential to reach that one. She also wants to travel allover theworld - "Far From The Home She Loves" and then get married and have identicaltwins. Now those odds we won't bet on!! But we wish her luck in striving to achievethem. Just don't forget to return to us, Anneka, and share your beautiful voice withour audiences.

CLAIRE CORMIER - Chava As the youngest of eight children, Claire seems right athome in Tevye's large family. This is her second production with WVLOA, she wasone of the nuns in "The Sound of Music" last summer. Claire's other theatricalcredits include roles in "You Can't Take It With You", "Twelfth Night", "Fiddler OnThe Roof" and "Present Laughter". She earned her BA at Cal State University inFullerton and is currently in her second year of law school at Boalt Hall School ofLaw at UC Berkley. One of her major career goals is to complete her schooling andpass the bar exam in the summer of '91. In the meantime, she is a part-time law clerkat Coddington, Hicks & Danforth in Menlo Park. It's comforting to know we willsoon have an attorney in Tevye's family; all that beauty, talent and brains, too! Andwhat's more, in real life, she's a blonde! She's the only one of our cast who can gotoour Director and ask, "Do You Love Me?" Welcome back, Claire, and good luck onyour exam.

CHRIS MOYLAN - Motel Chris makes his debut with WVLOA in this production, butif you attended WVLOA's August Banquet, you might recognize him as one of theBarbershop Quartet that performed for us. Ch ris comes to us via Pleasantville, NewYork, with an AB from Princeton University and a Ph 0 from Stanford University inPhysical Chemistry. He is currently working at IBM's Almaden Research Center asa scientist. His other theatrical credits include "Music Man", "Bye Bye Birdie" and"1776". His goals are to someday play Harold Hill (Music Man) and J. PierrepontFinch (How To Succeed); but his closest goal as the lead in his barbershop quartet,'The Vocal Chords', is to win first place in their annual contest where they placedthird out of 181ast year. Welcome, Chris, and we hope your Quartet is auditioningfor "Music Man"; you were terrific at the Banquet and we just know you'll win theBlue Ribbon in your competition this year!

ALAN-JAY WEISSMAN - Perchlk This very talented performer hails from SanDiego and makes his first appearance with WVLOA; but his numerous theatricalcredits include featured roles in "Fiddler On The Roof", "Once Upon A Mattress"and "Music Man" with San Diego CLO; Understudy to Robert Merrill as Tevye inLA's CLO; "Guys And Dolls" & "Fiorello" in College, as well as vaudeville andmelodrama at the Opry House. He earned his BAat San Diego State and is currentlyan account executive with Regional Broadcasting Sales Corp. in SF. "AJ" as he isknown was a California State Talent Competition Judge, a member of Delta PsiOmega (the National Dramatic Arts Honor Fraternity). a formercantorial student atHebrew Theological College in Skokie, IL and spent two years in a Kibbutz in Israelworking as an entertainer at the Tel Aviv Sheraton Hotel. He wants a career intheater, preferably Broadway or off-Broadway in musical comedy and/or TV. Howfortunate we are that AJ has chosen our community theater production to displayhis marvelous voice and stage presence. We hope he stays around forat least a yearor two, but we do wish him 'good fortune'!

KATHY NAVARRA - Yente Kathy made her first appearance in a musicalproduction on our stage in "The Sound Of Music" last summer as a nun, but herbackground and theatrical experience certainly take her out of the novice (if you'llpardon the pun) ranks. She worked on the television programs, The Dating Game &The Newlywed Game, acted as a tour guide at Universal Studios, sang in Nightclubsin West Hollywood and has been a make-up Artist and Designer for commercialsand in theater companies in So. Cal. Hergrandfatherwas like Milton Berle, dressedas a woman to put on shows and was always the life of the party; her father had aband and won an acting scholarship from high school; one brother is anactor/playwright in LA, one is in radio and the youngest is a drummer. Talk about"Tradition"!! in this family. Now we know where you got all your talent, Kathy! Shewants to sing 'standards' in a nightclub, learn to play piano, write a screenplay, be a"Big Sister" to a little girl, be happily married with 3kids and be able to afford to raisethem in Santa Clara Valley. Boy, does this gal shoot for the stars or what? GoodLuck, Kathy, we know you deserve them all and hope you attain each and everygoal.

JACK FI..EMING - Lazar This marks Jack's fourth production with WVLOA; he waslast seen as Baptista in "Kiss Me, Kate" and prior to that appeared as the General in"The Desert Song" and Whitney in "Anything Goes". He only recently beganperforming in community theater; he had appeared on the screen in "The TenCommandments" and "The Prodigal Son". Other local musicals in which he hasperformed include "Music Man" and "The Wizard of Oz". One of the most versatilecharacter actors around, he likes to develop radio theater scripts in his spare time.In his other spare time, he is an insurance agent for CSAA!! It is always a pleasure tohave Jack in our productions; his professionalism is always a joy to behold!I

-~

LES DALE - Rabbi/Russian Tenor Les is very familiar to WVLOA audiences, for thisis his 12th production and since they are too numerous to mention, we'll just list hisfavorites: FOR in "Annie", Osgood Fielding in "Sugar", and Captain Andy in "ShowBoat". His most recent role was that of Max Detweiler in "The Sound Of Music". Hehas also performed with SJCLO, SCP, Menlo Players and Community Players.Another of his favorite roles was that of the Professor in "Bus Stop"for TCP. He isafifth generation native to the Mt. View/Sunnyvale area and retired from PacificTelephone, but is currently a courier for a travel agency delivering airline ticketsthroughout Santa Clara County. His daughter, Julie (Tzeitel) introduced him tocommunity theater and he has been involved ever since either on stage, designingsets, decorating sets and drops and/or building special props for theatricalproductions. And his designs are always very creative, innovating and interesting 1But the biggest suprise is that high note you found without even standing on atable!! His goal is to continue his education in theater by both acting and designingsets. Stick around Les, we'll educate you while we utilize your expressive talents.

WEST VALLEY LIGHT OPERA ASSOCIATIONANNOUNCES ITS 25TH SEASON - 1989-90

J

"The Music Man" - This Meredith Willson musical is filled with an irresist-ible charm of small town life in Iowa in 1912. Robert Preston starred in theBroadway production in 1957 and repeated his role in the 1962 filmversion. He was "the music man" and literally stole America's heart as theconfidence man who comes to Iowa to trick the townspeople into buyingmusical instruments and uniforms; but gets caught by his love for thetown librarian. The great score includes: "76 Trombones", "Goodnight,My Someone", "Lida Rose", "Till There Was You", "Trouble","Shopoopee", and "Wells Fargo Wagon", Performances: June/July1990.

GRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSWe would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who will help atamoments notice and are always at hand when needed.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE"Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as - as a Fiddler on

the roof." These are the words Tevye initially uses to summarize theimportance of traditions to individuals, families and cultures. He will laterlearn just how true - and how false his observation is.Tevye's traditions most certainly are important. They provide continuityfor the cultural setting, allowing individuals to feel a part of the greatercommunity through conventionalized behaviors handed down fromgeneration to generation. Traditions make it easy for everyone who isfamiliar with the rituals to plug into the culture and both give and getsupport from those around them. Traditions make life comfortable inthat methods of living one's life are often laid out with easy-to-followrules.

However, traditions, as formulas for living, cannot replace thesubstance of life. Tevye learns that the need to give love andunderstanding is far greater than traditions can ever allow. Though thegreater community may need conventionalized systems of behavior tofunction properly, interpersonal relationships cannot be so restrictedand be able to flourish. They must be given the freedom to grow, placingindividual needs over communal suppression.

We all have many religious and familial traditions which we enjoyhonoring, and indeed, should enjoy. I think we also realize that we wouldrather know and experience love and acceptance. Negotiating these twoelements is Tevye's dilemma - let's see if it's possible to have both.

Thank you for attending our production of "Fiddler On The Roof".
