Performing Arts Offerings:

Instrumental - Concert Band- Jazz Band- Pep Band- Saxophone Quartet- Brass Ensemble

Vocal - Concert Choir- Wallace State Singers

Theatre

Participation in any of these groups isopen to all, regardless of major. Somegroups require an audition.

In addition to performance groups,classes are offered in theatre arts,music appreciation, theory, songwriting, composition and recordingtechniques. Private lessons are alsoavailable for voice, piano, organ,guitar and other instruments.

Concert Band: This group is dedicated to performingvarious types of classical and popular literature.Participation is open to anyone who has performedor played an instrument previously. Auditions are notnecessary for the Concert Band and there is no limiton the number of members. Scholarships areavailable.

Jazz Band: The Jazz Band is an elite 18-piece bigband. Students participate in a performing ensemblethat explores the entire repertoire for the big band,including (but not limited to) dance band, swing,Latin and contemporary and current charts. Thisensemble maintains a demanding practice andperformance schedule, including a spring tour thathas in the past taken the group across the U.S. and toparts of Canada and the Bahamas. Members mustaudition for a spot in the group, though previous jazzexperience is not a requirement. Scholarships areavailable.

Pep Band: The Pep Band performs at home basketballgames and is comprised of 15 to 25 members selectedfrom the Concert Band. Music performed by thisgroup is similar to that of a marching band.Scholarships are available.

Saxophone Quartet: This small ensemble ofsaxophone players introduces its members tothe classical, jazz, and pop idioms. This is anauditioned group for which scholarships areavailable.

Brass Ensemble: This ensemble is comprised oftwo trumpets, a French horn, a trombone,and a tuba, with membership selected byaudition. Scholarships are available.

Concert Choir: The Wallace State Choir is a performance groupdesigned to enhance the skills of developingmusicians through the choral genre. Therepertoire chosen incorporates many styles andrepresents the vast canon of choral music,including small octavos and larger works.Emphasis is placed on nurturing reading skills andhoning awareness of musical form, stylisticcharacteristics, and musical ensembleperformance. Membership in the Concert Choir is open to anyone. Students may audition forscholarships.

The Wallace State Singers: This is a performance-based ensemble thatappears on campus, in the community, andperiodically, throughout the state of Alabama.This is a music revue/jazz ensemble that explores

various forms of popular music, includingvocal jazz. This ensemble is a recruiting toolfor Wallace State Community College,especially for the music department, andtours and performs at area schools.Membership in this group is based onaudition. Scholarships are available.

The Wallace State Community College Theatreprogram provides quality training and productionopportunities for students wishing to pursue a careerin theatre, those who plan to acquire a degree intheatre, and students who simply enjoy the craft.Wallace State Theatre students have the opportunityto participate in two productions per year, includingone play and one musical, as well as the studentdirected scenes performed each April. Theatre coursesinclude Theatre Appreciation (live and online), ActingI and II, Directing, Voice and Speech, TheatreWorkshop, and Introduction to Dance for Theatre inconjunction with the Wallace State Singers.Scholarshipsare availableby audition forcast and crewmembers,includingactors,directors andplaywrights.

Careers

Wallace State performing arts students have gone on to careers in musiceducation and direction, directing bands and choirs in educational andworship settings. They perform as actors, singers and as members ofvarious types of bands and musical groups, often learning to play severalinstruments and performing a variety of styles to improve theirversatility. Theatre, film and television provide opportunities not only for actors, but for singers and musicians, who may perform in recordingor production studios, for radio and even video games. Music careersalso include composing and arranging music. Theatre careers includedirecting, playwriting and screenwriting, set and costume design,choreography, and the like. Classes and activities offered at WallaceState introduce students to many of these areas. The benefits to studentswho participate in the performing arts, regardless of whether they aremajoring in one of these disciplines, in addition to achieving subjectmatter expertise, are an insider’s perspective that leads to a lifetime ofenjoyment of the arts, the feeling of accomplishment that comes frombeing part of something greater than oneself, and skills such ascollaboration and team work, leadership, poise and creative self-expression.

Wallace State participates in the STARS statewide articulation program,which guarantees seamless transferability of coursework to the state’spublic universities.

The Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Artsopened in Spring 2010. The 42nd building on Wallace State's 300-acrecampus, it was constructed using sustainable materials and green energyconcepts.

This premier, state-of-the-art facility contains an intimate 230-seat recital hall, band and choir rooms, ensemble rooms, a choreography and dance studio, recording rooms,individual sound proof practice rooms and digital music compositionlaboratories as well as indoor and plein air art studios, a graphic artscomputer lab, multimedia classrooms, offices and meeting areas. TheEvelyn Burrow Museum, a museum of fine and decorative arts donatedto the College by Mrs. Burrow is also located in the Burrow Center.

The Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre is anewly renovated venue in the WallaceState Student Center used for large-scaleperformances by the Wallace State Musicand Theatre Departments, includingrecent productions of Beauty and theBeast and Little Shop of Horrors. TheAlabama Symphony Orchestra,Community Concert Series, Glenn MillerOrchestra and Montgomery Ballet havealso recently performed on this stage.Equipped with surround sound, highdefinition video and a 3-D qualitytheatre screen, this venue providesseating for more than 1,000.
