SUMMARY
INTRODUCTION
Clean Air Engineering was contracted by Vertac Site Contractors to determinethe level of hexachlorobenzene emissions at the Vertac Chemical Corporationfacility located in Jacksonville, Arkansas for pre-trial burn purposes.
The testing took place at the Unit 1 Stack on September 18 and 1 9 , 1 9 9 1 .Coordinating the field testing were:

SUMMARY OF TEST RESULTS
The test conditions and results of analysis are presented in Table 1 on page 1-2.

DESCRIPTION OF INSTALLATION 2-1
Vertac Site Contractors operates a transportable rotary kiln thermaldestruction unit (TDU) which is used to destroy hazardous wastes. The TDUis custom built specifically to process and destroy 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2,4-D) still bottom and pesticide waste material located at the VertacChemical Corporation superfund site. The primary components include arotary kiln (primary combustion chamber), a hot cyclone, an after burner(secondary combustion chamber), a spray dryer/quench tower, fourbaghouses, a venturi/baffle plate absorber, an induced draft fan and a stack.
The testing reported in this document was performed at the Unit 1 Stack.
A schematic of the process is shown below.

SUMMARY OF PROCEDURES
SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The sampling followed procedures as detailed in U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) Methods 1, 2, 3, and 4. These methods are titled:
• Method 1 —• Method 2 —

"Sample and Velocity Traverses for Stationary Sources;""Determination of Stack Gas Velocity and Volumetric Flow Rate(TypeS Pilot Tube);"
"Gas Analysis for Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen. Excess Air, andDry Molecular Weight;"
"Determination of Moisture Content in Stack Gases;"
These methods appear in detail in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations(CFR), Part 60, Appendix A.
Referenced with the above methods was SW846-M0010 "Modified Method 5Sampling Train."
The sampling apparatus is shown in Fig 1 on pages 3-2. The samplingequipment was designed and manufactured by the Nutech Inc. and Clean AirEngineering to meet U.S. EPA standards. All equipment was calibrated at theClean Air Engineering laboratory prior to shipment to the job site.
Sampling Locations
The Unit 1 Stack has two ports. The sampling time per point was ten minutesfor a total sampling time of 240 minutes. The sampling locations are shown inFig 2 on page 3-3.

ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES
Hexachlorobenzene
The Hexachlorobenzene emissions were determined following analyticalprocedures detailed in SW846-8270 "Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometryfor Semivolatile Organics: Capillary Column Technique". In this procedure, theprincipal organic hazardous constituents were withdrawn from the stack usinga Modified Method 5 sampling train. The modification consisted of adding asorbent cartridge and a condenser between the filter and the last impinger.The sample was then analyzed for hexachlorobenzene by solvent extractionfollowed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy.
QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURES
Quality control procedures for all aspects of field sampling; samplepreservation and holding time; reagent quality; analytical method; analysttraining and safety; and instrument cleaning, calibration and safety werefollowed. These procedures are generally consistent with EPA guidelinesdocumented in "Quality Assurance Manuals for Air Pollution MeasurementSystems," Vol 3, "Stationary Source Specific Methods" (EPA-600/4-77-027b).
