Thekeytoperformanceisclearingawaytheunsaid;thethingsthatareholdingusback.Eachindividualandeveryorganisa-onhasissuesconstrainingpeoplebecauseofwhattheyaren’tsaying.

BreakthroughperformancestartswithshiXinghowapersonoccurstohimself;howweseeourselves,andwhatwetellourselveswithourinnervoice.
Whenasked“whatarethestrengthsthatmakeforapeakperformer?”,peopleeasilyrolloffalistofwords–“brave,passionate,visionary,rela-onal,etc”.Butwhenitcomestoiden-fyingandowningourownstrengths–thestrengthsthatwillgiveusaccesstobreakthroughperformance–wearevagueandincoherent.
Par-cipantsareaskedtodoanexercisethathelpsthemtouncoverandiden-fytheirsignaturestrengths,andtothensharethemwiththeroom.Theircolleaguesarethenasked,inturn,whathis/hersignaturestrengthsare[ortheywritealeDerthatissharedintheworkshop,intheeventthatnocolleaguesarepresent].
Thegapbetweenwhatpar-cipantssayabouttheirstrengths,andwhattheircolleaguessayabouttheirstrengths,isawondertobehold.Par-cipantssittallintheirseatsastheyarevalidatedforbeingwhotheyare,andfortheextraordinarythingstheydoandcontribute.

Thedailyac-onsareanessen-alpartoffuturewri-ng.Withoutthemthe‘goodvibes’feltintheworkshopareeasilyforgoDen,andpar-cipantsgobacktotheiroldwayscomenextMondaymorning.Unlesspeople’sac-onsshiX,newstrategiesandplanswillfail.Havingpar-cipantscommittofiveeverydayac-onsisthewaytosustaintheworkshopexperiencebeyondtheworkshop,andmakeitarealitybackintheworkplace.
OncewriDen,eachpar-cipantthendeclarestheirfuturetotherestofthegroup.Adeclaredfutureisnotadreamorahope,butafuturetowhichpar-cipantscommitthemselves,withintegrity.Integrityisnotsimplykeepingone’sword–itishonouringone’sword.Whenapersonknowshewon’tbeabletokeephisword,hehonorshiswordbycleaningupwhereheletothersdown.

ThePowerofPeopleworkshopisnotalecture.Acquiringinforma-onispassive.ThePowerOfPeoplehasbeendesignedanddevelopedtoquiteliterallygivepar-cipantsanexperiencetheywon’tforget.It’slikeridingabicycle.Onceyouknowhowtorideabicycle,youknowforever;it’salwayswithyou,andinyou.
Richardbelievesthateachpersonhaswithinthemselvesvastresourcesforself‐understanding,foralteringtheirself‐concept,theiraItudes,andtheirself‐directedbehaviour.
