    Every Breath You Take

What are the implications of changing a component in a system?

What happens when a component of a system is changed? How would the systemwork? In this activity, you will look into the consequences of the choices individualsmake that affect the human body system.

    Background

The lungs are affected by choices made early in ones life. Without properly functioning lungs, breathing is difficult. Obesity affects all parts of the body and can cause serious effects as time goeson. Lung diseases such as emphysema and cancer can shorten ones life. Of course we have to getolder, so ageing causes the lungs to lose elastic recoil. Knowing how our lungs work and howenvironmental influences affect the lung will help us make the right choices and live healthier lives.

    TASK

ISM is known for its excellent service programme. Therefore it has been decided that grade 8students will help with teaching of biology in local schools. You are required to research a respiratory disorder and you will also produce functional models of respiration to be used for science teaching in the local schools during the CWW trips in February.Ultimately, your job is to explore the possible consequences of unhealthy choices (diet, personalhygiene, and lifestyle) on our bodies.

You will be working in 3-member teams and will present your model to your science teachers.

Specifically, you will choose a disorder related to the respiratory system and create a modifiedbreathing model to show this disorder .

    List of Disorders

    asthmapneumoniadrowningtuberculosis

puncture wound (collapsed lung)mucus (sick with cold)emphysemabronchitis

    tar build uplung cancercystic fibrosispneumothorax

    PROCEDURE

    A. Find information about your disorder . Your research should cover the following aspects. Provide a description of the disorder. Which respiratory structure(s) is/are affected? Describe the purpose of the structure/s in respiration and how they are affected?

What causes the disorder? What are the symptoms of the disorder? How does the problem affect respiration? Can it be cured and if so, how can it be cured? Is there a therapy? What preventative measures, if any, can be taken?

    B. Build your modified model of breathing . Modify your lung model to include features that will show the respiratory disorder. You may use some materials from home or materials that areavailable in the lab.

    C. Write-up . Each team member will write a 1-page document for the science teachers at local

schools to help them teach respiration. Refer to the guide below:A. Diagram and Description of Breathing Model

Name the parts of the lung that you see in your model. Show and describe how your model of breathing represents the

    respiratory disorder.

    B. The Breathing Process

Explain how breathing in your diseased model lung is different from thenormal breathing process (organize in a T-chart).

    C. Changes in components of the system

Describe the respiratory disorder. What are the causes? Symptoms? What environmental influences may have led or contributed to the respiratory disorder? Can it be cured and if so, how can it be cured? Is there a therapy? How can you take care of your lungs to make sure they stay healthy?
