Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is one ofthe most widely used cool-season turfgrass in thenorthern United States and Canada. Kentucky blue-grass has the ability to develop dense turfs of darkgreen color and clean mowing quality in a wide rangeof soils and climates. Its extensive rhizome systemprovides excellent sod strength as well as the abilityto recuperate after stress periods and fill in damagedareas quickly. As a result, Kentucky bluegrass is usedextensively for soil stabilization and conservation, for-age, and turf. Kentucky bluegrass is utilized on morethan 35 million acres of pastures and on over 40 mil-lion lawns in the northeastern and northcentral UnitedStates, as well as in large areas of Canada and Eu-rope (Duell, 1985).

Kentucky bluegrass topped the list of fairwaygrasses for northern golf courses in the early 1900saccording to R. A. Oakley (1924). However, after fair-way heights were reduced below 0.75 inch, Kentuckybluegrass was not competitive against invasion ofannual bluegrass and was more susceptible to sum-mer patch (Dernoeden, 1997). These liabilities, alongwith slow establishment rates, diminished the popu-larity of Kentucky bluegrasses for fairways, particu-larly as improved perennial ryegrasses (Loliumperenne) and creeping bentgrasses (Agrostisstolonifera) became available. The recent pandemicsof gray leaf spot (caused by the fungus Pyriculariagrisea), resulting in severe damage of perennialryegrass fairways on golf courses, has renewed in-terest among some turf professionals in the use ofKentucky bluegrass for roughs and fairways. Novelmethods of annual bluegrass control in Kentucky blue-grass turf stands are currently being investigated andcould potentially increase the overall utility of this spe-cies in less then optimum environments. Kentuckybluegrasses are also being tested throughout thecountry for tolerance to traffic and low mowing heights

to determine which cultivars can tolerate current golfcourse fairway conditions.

Kentucky bluegrass is an integral part of the sportsturf industry. It is commonly used for many differentplaying surfaces where safety and playability is of ut-most importance. Turfgrass, in general, forms a pro-tective layer that serves to buffer impacts that arecommon in competitive sports. Kentucky bluegrass,in particular, is well suited for this application becauseof the high recuperative ability associated with its rhi-zomatous growth habit. In addition to the increasedsafety associated with Kentucky bluegrass turf stands, its apomictic reproductive behavior also contributesto its utility by facilitating both uniformity and superbplayability. Traffic tolerance studies indicate that thereis a tremendous amount of diversity within the spe-cies in terms of wear tolerance, thus certain varietiesmay be better suited for this niche market than oth-ers.

There are three main uses for Kentucky blue-grass: forage, soil conservation, and specialized, me-dium-high maintenance turf such as athletic fields, home lawns, and golf courses. The common-typebluegrasses, predominately adapted to the Midwestand Rocky Mountain regions of the United States, areuseful for soil conservation, pastures, and lower main-tenance turf. Common-type bluegrasses are wellsuited for these uses due to early maturity, quickerestablishment, good stress tolerance, and the abilityto survive dry summers in a dormant state. Thesebluegrasses can suffer extensive turf loss, however, from leaf spot and melting out (caused by the fungusDrechslera poae) under close mowing in humid envi-ronments. The improved turf-type Kentucky bluegrasscultivars have a lower, more prostrate growth habit, respond well to higher maintenance regimes, toler-ate closer mowing, and have greater resistance toleaf spots than common type bluegrasses.

Kentucky bluegrass is slower to establish thanmany other cool-season turf grasses. Once estab-lished, however, it rapidly colonizes meadows, pas-tures, and turfs through extensive rhizome produc-tion (Huff, 2003). Some of the more commonly knownphysiological limitations of Kentucky bluegrass underturfgrass management include susceptibility todrought, disease, and insects (Huff, 2003). Accord-ing to Funk (2000), nearly every characteristic neededfor an ideal lawn is present within Kentucky bluegrass.Since Kentucky bluegrass reproduces through anasexual process called apomixis, incorporation of allthe characteristics into one cultivar is challenging.Apomixis does, however, provide the opportunity toproduce true-to-type seed from superior plants gen-eration after generation.

Kentucky bluegrass can sometimes exhibit poorsummer stress tolerance in the transition zone andsouthern United States, due not only to heat anddrought stress, but also to insect and disease pres-sure. To improve the summer performance of Ken-tucky bluegrass and extend the use of this speciesinto warmer climates, Rutgers is utilizing interspecifichybridization. Hybrids between Texas bluegrass (Poaarachnifera Torr.) and Kentucky bluegrass could po-tentially incorporate valuable traits from Texas blue-grass into Kentucky bluegrass. Texas bluegrass, native to Texas and parts of Oklahoma, is a dioeciousspecies that is more tolerant of heat and droughtstress conditions than Kentucky bluegrass. Texasbluegrass x Kentucky bluegrass crosses were madeas early as 1908 by George H. Oliver who noticed awide variation in first-generation hybrids, includingplants that were more heat and drought tolerant andmore productive than Kentucky bluegrass (Vinall andHein, 1937). Hybrid evaluation for fertile, highlyapomictic offspring with clean, easily threshed seedand improved turf performance is currently underwayat Rutgers. This breeding strategy of crossing fe-male Texas bluegrass plants with Kentucky bluegrasscould expand the adaptation of Kentucky bluegrassinto transition zone climatic areas where improvedheat and drought tolerance is necessary.

The Kentucky bluegrass improvement programat Rutgers involves extensive field evaluation of col-lections from the United States, Europe, and Asia, new material developed in the breeding program, aswell as cultivars and selections developed by otherbreeding programs. Recent collection trips to Poland,Bulgaria, China, Romania, Germany, Greece, Portu-gal, Finland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia,Norway, the Slovac Republic, Uzbekistan, and

Kyrgyzstan have enhanced the diversity of germplasmincorporated into the Kentucky bluegrass breedingprogram. In addition, the turfgrass research programat Rutgers participates in the National Turfgrass Evalu-ation Program (NTEP), which is sponsored by theUSDA and the National Turfgrass Federation, Inc.,located at the USDA (BARC) in Beltsville, MD.

PROCEDURES

Eleven trials were seeded in August or Septem-ber between 1999 and 2003 at the Rutgers Horticul-tural Research Farm II in North Brunswick or theRutgers Plant Science Research and Extension Farmat Adelphia, NJ (Tables 1 to 11). The soils at theresearch farms are moderately fertile and fairly welldrained, and the trials were conducted under medium-high maintenance regimes.

Entries in each test were sown by hand using amaximum of 15 g of seed per 3 X 5 ft plot (2.2 lb/1000 ft2). An unplanted 6-inch border was left aroundeach plot. The test established at North Brunswick in2000 (Table 3) was sown with 24 g of seed per 4 X 6ft plot (2.2 lb/1000 ft2). Each test was arranged in arandomized complete block design with three repli-cations. Annual nitrogen (N) applied and mowingheights for each trial are presented in Table 12. Theamount of N applied varied between tests to permitthe evaluation of characteristics known to respond toN level. No single N application exceeded 1.0 lb/1000ft2. Mowing was frequent enough (two or three timesper week during active growth) to avoid excessivedefoliation and the accumulation of clippings.

After establishment, summer annual weeds werecontrolled by a spring application of dithiopyr (Dimen-sion), and broadleaf weeds were controlled by eithera spring or autumn application of 2,4-D, MCPP, anddicamba. All trials received an application of imida-cloprid (Merit) for grub control in late June or earlyJuly. Some trials received a late summer/early fallapplication of dithiopyr for annual bluegrass control(Tables 4, 7, and 9). Generally soil pH was main-tained between 6.0 and 6.5 with agricultural limestone.Tests were irrigated during establishment and alsowhen needed to avoid severe drought stress.

All tests were rated frequently throughout thegrowing season for turf quality (which is a subjectiverating that includes attributes such as color, bright-ness, leaf texture, density, uniformity, and amount ofdamage due to diseases and insects). Other char-acteristics were evaluated on some tests when dif-

Page 5: Performance of Kentucky Bluegrass Cultivars and Selections ... · the most widely used cool-season turfgrass in the northern United States and Canada. Kentucky blue-grass has the

ferences between entries were apparent. These char-acteristics included spring green-up (Tables 2 to 6and 9 to 11), stripe smut (caused by Ustilagostriiformis) (Tables 2 and 4), leaf spot (Tables 5, 6, 8,and 9), summer patch (caused by Magnaporthe poae)(Table 8), stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis)(Tables 10 and 11), dollar spot (caused by Sclerotiniahomoeocarpa) (Table 4), genetic color (Tables 3 and4), density (Table 3), leaf texture (Table 3), establish-ment (Tables 8 to 11), winter color (Table 4), recoveryfrom traffic (Table 3), presence of seed heads (Table4), and seedling vigor (Table 9). All ratings were basedon a 1 to 9 scale, where 9 represented the most fa-vorable turf quality or desirable turf characteristic.Throughout the season, various people rated the plotsto reduce individual preferences toward a particulartrait.

All data were summarized and subjected to ananalysis of variance. Means were separated usingthe least significant difference (LSD) multiple com-parisons test.

RESULTS

Turf Evaluation Trials

Results are presented in Tables 1 through 11.Entries are ranked according to the overall (multi-year)quality average (Tables 1 to 7). Tables 8 through 11are ranked by the turf quality average for 2004. Tables3 and 4 include all the entries of the 2000 Medium-High Maintenance Kentucky Bluegrass Test spon-sored by NTEP.

Many distinct types of Kentucky bluegrass havebeen developed and these can be classified intogroups based on growth and performance character-istics. The Kentucky bluegrass types are describedbelow, and are based on observations of many Rut-gers turfgrass evaluation trials. It should be notedthat this classification system continues to be refinedas more cultivars are developed and their distinctcharacteristics are expressed in research trials. Thismethod of classification is used to present data inTables 3 and 4.

Compact Type. Cultivars within this group arecharacterized by a low, compact growth habit. Com-pact turfgrasses possess very good to excellent re-sistance to leaf spots, and most form a highly attrac-tive turf after green-up in late spring. In general, thesecultivars have long winter dormancy, and a purple col-oration can be observed on many during cold weather,

which is reflected in winter color ratings (Table 4). Inthe Adelphia trial established in 2000, some cultivars, such as SR 2109 (Table 4), however, exhibited betterwinter performance. Strip smut resistance by entriesin this group was good (Table 4), although traffic tol-erance (under a low mowing height of 0.75 inch) wassomewhat variable (Table 3). Cultivars such asPrinceton P-105, Moonshadow, and Blue-tastic per-formed very well under traffic in the turf trial main-tained at 0.75 inch in North Brunswick (Table 3). Theexperimental selection H94-707 also tolerated trafficwell. Performance during summer heat and droughtstress within this group was variable with some culti-vars producing very good turf quality.

Compact-Midnight Type. Within the compacttype, a number of cultivars exhibit growth and perfor-mance characteristics similar to the cultivar Midnight. These turfgrasses typically have long winter dormancywith a purple and/or straw coloration during prolongeddormant periods, and they typically green up late inthe spring. Turfgrasses in this group characteristi-cally have a very dark green color with good turf qual-ity and heat tolerance. When maintained under fair-way conditions in North Brunswick, these cultivarswere very tolerant of traffic (Table 3). In addition, goodresistance to dollar spot (caused by the fungus Scle-rotinia homoeocarpa) was evident at the Adelphia lo-cation (Table 4). Many entries in this group, includingMidnight and Midnight II, suffered severe damage dueto stem rust at Adelphia in fall of 2003 in a turf trialseeded in September of that year (Tables 10 and 11).This appears to be a new race of fungus, since thesecultivars previously had good resistance to this dis-ease.

Compact-America Type. Within the compacttype, a number of cultivars exhibit growth and perfor-mance characteristics similar to the cultivar America. These cultivars have finer leaf texture and higherdensity than most other compact type turfgrasses.Moderate recovery from summer stress as well aswith good resistance to leaf spot and most races ofpowdery mildew have been observed within thisgroup. The Compact-America type has moderate win-ter dormancy often accompanied by yellowing orbleaching of leaf tips. In Adelphia, some cultivars andselections such as Bedazzled, SR 2284, Bar Pp 0573,and Langara exhibited very good color retention dur-ing winter months with little yellow discoloration (Table4). In general, these turfgrasses did not perform wellunder traffic at a 0.75-inch mowing height, which wasunexpected based on the low growth habit of thisgroup (Table 3).

Page 6: Performance of Kentucky Bluegrass Cultivars and Selections ... · the most widely used cool-season turfgrass in the northern United States and Canada. Kentucky blue-grass has the

52

Julia Type. Another group can be typified by theperformance characteristics of the cultivar Julia. These cultivars form a high quality turf but have mod-erate winter performance. Although Julia type culti-vars have good resistance to leaf spot and stripe smut, they can be damaged by brown patch (caused by thefungus Rhizoctonia solani), summer patch, and dol-lar spot. At the Adelphia research farm (Table 4), theentry Avalanche was more resistant to dollar spot thanJulia. Julia type turfgrasses performed well undertraffic when maintained in North Brunswick at a 0.75-inch cutting height (Table 3). The cultivar Avalanche,in particular, was very tolerant of these conditions.

Mid-Atlantic Ecotype. This group of cultivarsforms a vigorous turf of medium-high density and adeep, extensive root and rhizome system. Althoughthese cultivars are, in general, moderately suscep-tible to leaf spot, their extensive rhizome system fa-cilitates excellent recovery from this disease and otherstresses. Mid-Atlantic turfgrasses tolerate and re-cover well from summer stress and have moderateto good winter performance. Two entries in this group,Cabernet and Eagleton, performed well under trafficstress and low cutting height (0.75 inch), especiallyduring summer months (Table 3).

Shamrock Type. Cultivars within this type exhibitcharacteristics similar to the cultivar Shamrock. Thisgroup tends to have moderate winter color, moderateresistance to leaf spot disease, and moderate sus-ceptibility to billbug feeding. The Shamrock type haspotential for high seed yield production, but unlike theBVMG type, most cultivars have good tolerance ofstripe smut (Table 4). Summer stress tolerance isvariable within this type.

Aggressive (High Density) Type. Cultivars withinthis group seem to share only two common charac-teristics: vigorous lateral spread and high shoot den-sity (Bonos et. al., 2000), which are features that mayhelp to hasten the development of a mature sod. Per-formance of these turfgrasses under traffic at a cut-ting height of 0.75 inch (Table 3), however, indicatesthat this aggressive spread and high density at ahigher cutting height (1.5 inch) (Table 4) does not pre-dict tolerance to traffic under lower cutting heights.Aggressive type turfgrasses can dominate other spe-cies or cultivars when used in blends or mixtures, andunder such circumstances, rapid expression of culti-var strength and weaknesses may be evident. Otherturf characteristics such as spring green-up, winterdormancy and color, disease susceptibility, and re-

covery from summer stress vary considerably amongthe turfgrasses in this group.

CELA Type (Challenger, Eclipse, Liberty, AdelphiType). Cultivars of this type exhibit early spring green-up similar to the Bellevue type, but tend to producefewer seed heads under mowed turf conditions (Table3) than Bellevue cultivars. CELA turfgrasses havemoderate to good resistance to stripe smut, stem rust, and leaf spot and generally exhibit good winter color(Table 4).

Bellevue Type. These cultivars form a turf withmedium growth, medium-wide leaves, and mediumshoot density. Excellent cool-season vigor exists inthis group, which is evident by excellent color reten-tion and turf quality during the winter and by an earlyspring green-up. Bellevue turfgrasses can have vis-ible, straw-colored reproductive stems in turf plots dueto seed head formation in late spring (Table 4). Thesecultivars have moderate recuperative ability from sum-mer stress, are moderately resistant to leaf spot andstripe smut, and are moderately susceptible to bill-bug damage.

BVMG Type (Baron, Victa, Merit, Gnome Type). This widely used group of cultivars has very high seedyield potential and can generally produce medium-good quality turf in the absence of stripe smut. BVMGcultivars have medium-low growth, medium-wideleaves, and produce a medium-dense turf. Repro-ductive stems are often visible in turf plots due to seedhead formation in late spring. The BVMG type ismoderately resistant to leaf spot. All entries evalu-ated in long-term trials at Rutgers were susceptibleto stripe smut (Table 4), which resulted in a severereduction in turf quality over time. This damage fromstripe smut increases susceptibility to leaf spot andperpetuates the decline in turf quality. BVMG culti-vars generally exhibit poorer winter color and longerwinter dormancy than many other Kentucky blue-grasses. These grasses can also suffer significantbillbug damage. Recovery from summer stressranges from poor to moderate; this group performedpoorly under traffic stress and low cutting height (0.75inch) at North Brunswick (Table 3).

Common Type (formerly Midwest Ecotypes). These cultivars and selections are frequently referredto as “common” Kentucky bluegrasses, and are char-acterized by an erect growth habit and narrow leafblades. The term “common type” should not be con-fused with the seed label term “variety-not-stated” or

Page 7: Performance of Kentucky Bluegrass Cultivars and Selections ... · the most widely used cool-season turfgrass in the northern United States and Canada. Kentucky blue-grass has the

53

VNS (unfortunately, the “common” is often used toinaccurately describe VNS seed). Many common typecultivars were selections of naturalized ecotypes foundin old pastures of the Midwestern United States. These turfgrasses produce seed early and economi-cally, exhibit good stress tolerance, and often survivesummer drought in a dormant condition. Commontype cultivars are very susceptible to leaf spot andmay be extensively damaged by this disease duringthe cool humid conditions of winter and spring. Poorturf quality and excessive purple coloration duringwinter is typical on some of these cultivars, includingKenblue. A91-703, an improved common Kentuckybluegrass selection, has moderately good leaf spotresistance. Common type cultivars are best adaptedto high cutting heights in regions with cool nights, brightsun, and low humidity and are suited for low mainte-nance utility turf areas where soil stabilization and con-servation are needed.

Texas x Kentucky Bluegrass Hybrids. As statedpreviously, some breeding programs are utilizing in-terspecific hybridization to improve Kentucky blue-grass. Female Texas bluegrass plants are crossedwith Kentucky bluegrass plants to incorporate themore desirable turf characteristics of Kentucky blue-grass into Texas bluegrass, which possesses betterheat and drought tolerance. Progeny from thesecrosses are highly variable (Tables 3 and 4) and mayor may not exhibit improved summer stress perfor-mance, thus requiring further evaluation to identifyuseful hybrids. This type has been established todesignate cultivars developed through this method.

Other Turf Types. This group of cultivars andselections possess traits that are intermediate be-tween two or more of the previously discussed groups.Further study may allow the classification of some ofthese cultivars into known groups or the separationof additional types.

SUMMARY

Kentucky bluegrass is grown for many uses un-der a diverse range of soil, environmental, and man-agement conditions. As a result, there is a demandfor cultivars that produce a durable, high quality turffor an assortment of uses under a broad range ofconditions. Improved resistance to important diseasesand insect pests, along with tolerance to heat, drought, close mowing, shade, and traffic are needed in culti-vars that are expected to perform well in many situa-tions. Blends of Kentucky bluegrass should be used

which include cultivars with similar growth character-istics and complementary performance characteris-tics when turf quality expectations include high uni-formity.
