  • Ah, it feels good to have a 3drCossie on the cover its been awhile, after all. I know it doesnthave a million horsepower, butits a fantastic car thats beenbuilt properly. With a genuine500bhp and all the right bitson it, its certainly one that Idlove to have sitting in mygarage at home.

You probably also spotted the700bhp Focus RS. Is this themost powerful RS in the UK atthe moment? Quite possibly!Theres no arguing the Mk2 RShas etched itself into the historybooks and its great to see thatpower figures are still creepingup. Will we be looking at800bhp this time next year!? Iwouldnt rule it out.

The Mk6 Fiesta in this issue issomething a little dierentfrom the norm. Its very muchwhat the kids call stancedbut its got performancecredentials, too, in the shapeof a turbocharged Duratecunder the bonnet. Its acracking little thing.

No issue of PF would becomplete without a decentold-skool motor and thismonth the Cosworth turboMk1 Escort takes care of that.In a world of Ultimate Greensand Tangerine Screams, there is definitely room for Tawney Brown. Ifever there was a car to suit that colour, its theclassic Mk1 Escort. This one is a peach.

This month we were also pitched into the firstof a number of challenges. We had to put 50worth of fuel in a Fiesta ST MP215 and beatthe factory fuel economy figures. Easier saidthan done, thats for sure.

Great start to 2014 for FordIn comparison to the same period for 2013, Ford has beatenmarket growth and increased sales and shares of its cars andcommercial vehicles.

That means Ford sold the most cars and CVs in January, with the Fiestaand Focus remaining number one and two best sellers. The Transit andTransit Custom are also following suit with being the top two CVs. Theirlead in total vehicle sales has more than doubled in comparison toJanuary 2013 and the lead in car sales has grown more than five times.Which is all very encouraging stu for our favourite vehiclemanufacturer. So, lets have a Fiesta RS to celebrate please!

Giovanardi looking strongin Airwaves FocusThe announcement that Fabrizio Giovanardi was returning toBTCC in 2014 was very well received, even more so that hewould be piloting a Focus as part of the Airwaves Racing Team.

Obviously the cars these days are far removed from those that hewas driving during his first campaign, but he was looking good attheir first test session at Brands Hatch in early February. It should bean exciting season.

RSOC National Day Old-Skool-Only track sessionThe guys organising the RSOC National Day are, this year, looking toshake things up a bit and part of this includes organising an old-skool-only track session.

So this would involve a plethora of classic Fords hitting the Doningtontarmac together. Well probably be taking Project Goldmember along for aplay, so hopefully youll bring your old Ford along to be part of the action!

Rare GT40foundWe often see barn finds oneBay but seldom are they quiteas rare and special as this one.

Buried under a pile of rubbish in agarage in California, this is chassis1067. One of just three Mk1 GT40sto come with the Mk2s rearclamshell and of those three, it isthe only survivor. In addition tothat, it was the last GT40 to beproduced in 1966 and the lastGT40 to use a Ford serial number after this one they all wore theserial numbers of JW AutomotiveEngineering. Were still hoping tostumble across an RS1800, orsimilar, in a garage one day.

  • s a sweeping generalisation, all of us car folk have got aplan. Whether its to turn astandard Fiesta into a bigpower monster, go

Concours with a mint Escort Cossie or justmake a bit of money on a bargain bangerthat weve picked up we cant helpourselves but to scheme and plot whatthe next move is going to be. Literallyweeks of our lives can be lost to decidingwhich wheels to fit, which turbo tochoose or even what car to buy in thefirst place. Its just what we do.

    Sierra Cosworth

Andy Marston had initially planned tobuild a track car, not out of this Sierrabut out of a Mk1 Escort project that hedbought. See, Andy is a bit of a speedfreak on the quiet. Ive had an M3, hesays. A couple of Porsche 911s and mostrecently a Nissan GTR. But I ended upwith too many points on my license bybeing a tit, so I sold up and bought aRange Rover: trying to be sensible. But,lets face it, someone who likes to go fastis going to need some sort of an outlet.Thats why I bought the Mk1 Escort,Andy explains. It was the first car that I

actually built myself. Its got a Cossieturbo engine and the plan was to use itfor track days.

As you might guess, given the title of thefeature, this wasnt quite how it pannedout for Andy: The problem was, by thetime wed finished the Mk1, it was toonice to use on track, so I then startedlooking for something else.

Andy didnt really have a specific car inmind for his track project, but after a ridein a three-door, hed soon reached adecision. I wasnt looking for a three-

door, says Andy. Ive always liked them, specifically I love how they look, but Idnever really thought about buying one.A friend of mine on the PassionFordforum had a three door and bought itround to take me out in it. It scared theshit out of me, much like the Mk1 Escortdoes, so I just had to have one.

It wasnt long before Andy was scanningthe pages of eBay and ended up buyinga car, pretty much blind. The car itselfhad, at some point in its life, been acompetition car. After this, it movedaround a bit, but didnt really do much. Itwas listed on eBay without any trim in itbut otherwise a running car. I didntknow what it would be like when itturned up, says Andy. I took thegamble. It had a horrendous oil leak. Theentire underside of the car was literallycoated in the stu. However, the goodthing about oil is that it inhibitscorrosion. So when Andy steam cleanedthe underside o, he was happy todiscover that the Sierra was solid. Therewas no rust in it at all which, being an80s Ford, is something of a result.

Because it needed no rust repairs, Andydecided that hed get it up and runningas quickly as possible. I bought it aroundthe April or May, and wanted it on theroad that summer, Andy explains. >

So I found a scruy trim on eBay, boltedthat in and basically cobbled it togetherfor the summer. However, it quicklybecame apparent why there was no trimin it: I was really disappointed in how itdelivered power. I think thats why therewas no trim in it so that you couldntdrive it, as it would have put me right o.When it was o boost it was like driving a1.1 Fiesta it was so flat. The engine hadbeen built with very low compressionpistons and pushed out around 350bhp.

However, when it finally did come onboost, it was a quick enough car. Enoughto keep up with the GTR that he ownedat the time. But then he got the GTRmodified and all of a sudden, the Sierrajust felt slow again. So at the end of thatsummer Andy decided to stick his Sierrain the garage and rip it apart.

I pulled the engine out at the end ofthe summer and sent it o to Reyland,he says. I wanted 450/500bhp but Ididnt want it flat. It had to be asresponsive as possible low down. Iwasnt really chasing numbers. So withthat in mind, Reyland specced a long-

studded 200 block, installed somepocketed 7.8:1 pistons, lightly ported a2wd cylinder head and installed aBD16+ inlet cam and a BD14 exhaustcam. I listened to advice on the forumsand everyone advised me to go for aGT3071, claiming itll make 500bhp butspool like a T34, it doesnt, he says. Itdoes make 500bhp but it comes in a bittoo late for my liking.

As well as the GT series turbo, an Airtecplenum and 83lb Siemens injectors aresupplied air by a large top-feed Airtecintercooler. When it was originallybeing mapped it made about 490bhp,smiles Andy. I know I said I wasntchasing figures but it seemed a shamenot to crack the 500 barrier. So thatswhen we fitted the bigger Airtecintercooler. Said mapping of the Level 8ECU was entrusted to MSD, as was theinstallation of launch control, anti-lagand closed loop fuelling. When it comeson boost its huge fun, he smiles. Andthe launch control is amazing; it makesyou squeal. But Id like it to boost up abit earlier, so I might fit the T34 that Ihave in my garage. Well see. >

Whilst the engine was away, Andystripped the engine bay and undersideand proceeded to rub them back to bere-painted. Amazingly, the exteriorpaintwork didnt need re-doing, whichsaved a lot of time and money.

When it came to putting the car backtogether, Andy was keen to do it rightfirst time, so installed an adjustable, six-degree, rear beam to improve the Sierrastendancy to lack rear end grip. He alsoopted to install a Toyota Supra di tobetter cope with the planned powerfigures. The T5 gearbox was rebuilt byBara to better prepare it for theonslaught that it would soon be facing.

As you can see, it was all shaping upnicely to be a track weapon. But Andysdesire to try and retain a classic look forthe car would change the ultimatecourse. It had 7 spoke RLs on it when Ibought it and ran it for that summer. ButI wanted something a bit more standardlooking, says Andy. So I went for the 17Calibre wheels. They are big enough tocover the brakes but look similar to thestandard 3-door wheels. OEM plus, youmight call it.

Next up Andy was looking at that tattyinterior that he had previously boughtfrom eBay and made the decision to getit re-trimmed. He opted for a half-leather, half Alacantara finish on theseats. A modern twist on the originaltheme. We actually like how this hasturned out, but Andy reports havingreceived mixed reviews from those whohave seen them.

In all it was a fairly trouble-free build, asAndy explains: I was really quite luckywith it, from it being solid in the firstplace to things just turning up when Ineeded them. Sure enough there is theinevitable Cossie tax hiking up the prices, but when I wanted an interior, one cameup on eBay, that sort of thing. The hardestbit to source was the headlining. Which, when I found, I had re-trimmed.

The net result, then, is a very fast andvery nice road car. Not quite the tracktool that Andy had set out to build. Wespent too much time on the Mk1 to useit on track days, says Andy. So Ithought I know, Ill buy a three door fortrack days. But this has turned out fartoo nice, too. So, to solve this little

predicament Andy has now got a Lotusfor track days and his Sierra and Escortfor fun. Not quite the original plan and alittle wide of the sensible road carmark, but you know what they sayabout the best-laid plans PF

All the way from Hungary, we present Laszlo Bodrozsans stunning Mk6 Fiestaturbo. You wont nd another like it in the UK. Come to think of it, you wontnd another one like it in Europe, or the rest of the world for that matter.

  • or the most part, were not bigfans of Euro style cars here at PF.And when we say Euro style, wedont necessarily mean all cars

that have come from Europe, becauseon the rare occasions that weve beenallowed to venture onto the continent, weve discovered some truly awe-inspiring machinery, from mental rear-wheel-drive Focus STs in Slovakia tostunning RS500-inspired Sierras inBelgium. Not to mention all thosemind-blowing creations from theMediterranean mecca of performanceFords that is Malta.

By Euro style, we mean something thatis typically fitted with silly wheels thatdont fit properly, a trendy interior madefrom pink suede and bits of an Audi TT,air bag suspension and a 1.4-litre TDiunder the bonnet. You all know the kindof thing were on about. Which is why, when we first clapped eyes onHungarian Laszlo Bodrozsans Mk6Fiesta a little while back, our initialthoughts were that there wasnt muchmore to it than a set of unusual wheels. As it turns out, we should never havedoubted it, because not only is LaszlosMk6 one of the most highly modifiedFiestas weve seen in a long while, but isa real breath of fresh air compared tosome of the regular STs that we see on adaily basis in the UK. For starters, its noteven an ST, and while most would agreeit looks pretty sweet, it also has plentyof punch to back up the FordPerformance blue paintwork.

    PF 024

Laszlo originally bought the car back in2007, at which time it was completelystandard and fitted with a stock 1.3-litreengine. He always knew he was goingto use the Fiesta as the basis for aproject, but lets just say his firstattempts kind of ended up taking himin the wrong direction.

I fitted a Lester bumper, a set of 16-inch Extreme X8 rims and one of thosetwo-by-two quad exit exhausts, he saidI can appreciate now that this wasnt avery good idea, but it seemed OK atthe time! >

Thankfully, after coming to his senses,Laszlo ditched the dodgy styling infavour of a more OEM look, replacingthe wheels for a set of 16-inch KeskinKT1s in the process. He also wanted toditch the saggy standard suspensionfor something a bit more focused, butwhile he didnt want to resort to basiclowering springs, he couldnt affordanything as fancy as a brand new set ofcoilovers. Thankfully, fate was about tolend a helping hand.

As it happens, the man responsible forthese rather excellent photos, ViktorBenyi, is also rather keen on hisperformance Fords, and at the same

time that Laszlo was on the hunt forsome suspension, he was in the processof selling the KW V1 coilovers from hisown Fiesta.

I didnt expect too many buyers toshow up, as theres not many peoplewho are interested in modifying Fiestasin Hungary, especially not to the levelwhere you really need coilovers, admitted Viktor. Laszlo saw my advertand ended up buying the KWs from me.We also spoke about photographing hiscar for a magazine feature, but he toldme that he wanted a lot more time tocomplete the project. That was twoyears ago!

A couple of months after the coiloverswere fitted, Laszlo did the decent thingof blowing up the puny 1.3-litre engine, which of course meant that it was timeto consider something much moreinteresting to replace it with. While heweighed up the pros and cons ofvarious powerplants, he wasted littletime in bringing the exterior of thepoverty spec Mk6 up to scratch byfitting some MK6 ST bumpers, side skirtsand rear wing, removing the rear wiper,de-locking the doors and then givingthe whole lot a fresh coat of FordPerformance blue paint taking care tocolour code the door handles and bumpstrips in the process. The interior wasalso upgraded to include hip-hugging

Recaro Evo 6 seats with Sabelt belts, while the wheels changed once again toKeskin KT3s. The Fiesta was starting tocome together, but without a workingengine in the hole, it was still missingthe most vital ingredient.

Deciding on a replacement engine wastricky, said Laszlo. I really wanted acomplete turbocharged engine as Ididnt want the hassle of building onefrom scratch, but I just couldnt find oneanywhere so I ended up fitting a 2-litreZetec from a totaled Focus. It was a greatengine, but just wasnt what I was reallyafter, so I almost ended up selling thewhole car in order to buy somethingthat came with a turbo attached to it. >

THERES NO CHANCE OF THIS GETTING LOST INA CROWD OF MK6 STs!

Happily, fate was to smile on Laszlo andhis Mk6 once again. Before he could sellit, he received a call out of the blue froma friend who had, apparently, found theanswer to his prayers in the form of afully built 1.6-litre Duratec turbo. Betterstill, this engine was said to have beenput together by a very well respectedHungarian engine tuner, PW Racing, acompany that might mean very little tothe majority of people reading this, butone that evidently knows its stu asLaszlo reckons it has been 100% reliablesince he fitted it. Unfortunately, we donthave any info on what power this engineis capable of, but judging by the spec, which includes an unusual mix of K04turbo, BMW rods, Wiseco pistons, a VAG20v Turbo fuel rail and much morebesides, we would have to hazard aguess at something in the region of250bhp if not more.

The finished result is nothing short ofspectacular, with that gleamingPerformance blue paint contrastingperfectly with a white roll cage andthose eye-catching powder-coatedCorvette alloys. Its so often the case thatwheels can make or break a project car, which is why so many people in the UKdecide to play it safe with the same old

Comp MOs, Escort Cossie alloys or TeamDynamics Pro Race, but we have to saythat in this case, Laszlos gamble to gowith the C4s has paid o, big time.Theres no chance of this getting lost in acrowd of Mk6 STs!

Fitting them was not an easy task as youcan imagine, as the Ford four-studfitment was not compatible with thefive-stud Vette rims, so it took a five-stud conversion and some spacers inorder for them to finally slot into place. Not only do they look fully awesome, but theyre just the right size to house aset of Wilwood four pots and 325mmdiscs up front, with a neat Focus discconversion hidden away out of sight atthe rear. Oh, and if youre curious as tothe colour of the calipers, theyre Tianyblue apparently, the same colour as therocker cover and fuel rail

Perhaps the best thing about LaszlosFiesta though, is that its the example ofa truly original project car, one thatsbeen built by someone with a real eyefor what works and what doesnt. Doesthat make it a trend setter? Well, hopefully it does. Lets face it, theperformance Ford scene can benotoriously unimaginative at times... PF

  • hilst it may not be takingback handers to turn ablind eye to huge drugshipments, the Focus RS

you see before you could potentially bethe most powerful RS in the UK at themoment. Recently run on AMD Essexsrolling road, its owner Mark Marsdenreported consistent 700bhp power runs. So, if you apply that well-known sayingto this automotive hulk, its more corruptthan the files on a second-hand laptop.

Tenuous links to the title aside, the onething that unites the human race is afundamental quest for power. Whateverthe outlet may be, we cant helpourselves but chase power. Whether thatpower is a psychological one, a physicalone, a social one, or whatever there arevery few people who arent after morein some aspect of their lives. The goodold automobile can exasperate this especially if its a performance car.

When you add a fast car to the equation, the quest for power can quite easily getmixed with the overwhelming desire togo faster and be better than the rest. This is a potent mix that can easily resultin an empty bank account just as quickas any addiction, legal or otherwise.

    PF 032

Marks story actually started withanother Focus RS, in white. It wascompletely standard and absolutely fine.He fell in love with the RS after seeingone at Dagenham Motors not long afterthey had first come out and soondecided that he just had to have one.So he did, and he loved it. But thensomething bigger came Marks way.

ITS MORECORRUPT THANTHE FILES ON ASECOND-HANDLAPTOP

    Focus RS

He was looking at some of the cars thatAdrian at Focus RS Direct had for saleand spotted a Performance Blue RS thathad been upgraded to MountuneMP350 spec. Jumping into a new carwith the leap in power and striking newpaint was enough for Mark, for a while. Inever intended to modify it, says Mark. But I got involved in the RS car sceneand was soon hooked and that was it its not stopped since.

Not much more than a year into owningthe blue Focus, he couldnt resisttemptation any longer, he needed morepower. So, in 2013 he had a look at whowas doing what in the world of theFocus RS, and the guys at Jamsportcame out on top. His car was soonbooked in for their 420bhp map. Giventhat it already had the hardwarerequired, thanks to its previousMountune upgrades, it was astraightforward procedure and Mark wassoon enjoying the hike in poweraorded by this level of tune.

As youll no doubt be aware, this level ofpower is approaching the limit of whatthe standard internals can cope with, sowhen the inevitable happened andMark decided that he wanted yet >

more power. When it went back toNorthampton for more go, it was a bitmore involved than just uploading somedierent software. At this level of powerits time to go, what you might call, oldschool and pull the engine out andphysically change how some of it works.

Granted, as far as the bottom-end isconcerned, its more a case ofstrengthening it to enable it to copewith more power. The crank is wellwithin tolerance, but the con-rods needto be switched for some forged steelitems and the pistons also need to be

replaced with forged ones. Of course, whilst the engine was apart, the goodold-fashioned block-mod was done, too!Better to be safe than sorry. A Sitechflywheel was bolted on to the end of thecrank and a Helix Paddle clutch to dealwith the hike in power.

Given that the internal combustionengine is, in the simplest terms, an airpump, the ultimate route is to get moreair in and out of it as eciently aspossible. Whilst there is plenty going onexternally, the cylinder head is a keyelement to getting it in and out of the

    Focus RS

cylinders and before the times of turbosand fuel injection, a lot of power gainscan be found by porting the cylinderhead, changing the shape of the portsand fitting bigger valves. This meansthat the pump is by its very nature ableto process more air, complementing thework of those external components.

The external components in questionare no less trick. Jamsport fitted aGTX3583 turbo on a tubular exhaustmanifold. This is, of course, externallygated, and so a Tial 44mm wastegatealso lurks back there. Onwards of theturbo there is a Jamsport de-cat pipeand a full 3 KMS system after that.

Getting the pressurized air into theengine comes via a Anembo inletplenum. Chosen for the job as its theonly one with internal trumpets toprecisely tune the flow of air into eachcylinder and it is also the largest capacityplenum on the market. Size is obviouslyimportant when you need to move thevolume of air required for big powerfigures. The cold air originates from astage-2 CAIS and is also kept at asensible temperature by a gigantic,stage-3, Airtec intercooler. Obviously, aserious hike in the amount of air beingmoved means that the amount of fuelcombined with it also needs to increaseby a fair chunk. So this means big 1000ccinjectors and an uprated fuel pump. >

    Focus RS

As well as the obvious means of movingand processing air and fuel, protectingthe engine is also key. More powermeans more stresses and highertemperatures. So the upgrade alsoincluded a Jamsport oil breather systemand oil cooler. This combined with largerboost piping, Denso plugs and an HKSboost controller meant that the Focuswas now packing some serioushardware under the bonnet certainlyall of the ingredients to make somedecent power figures.

At the time, Jamsport couldnt map tothe power levels that I wanted, saysMark. So I had a look around and SCChad the Revo Stage-5 Plus, which wasthe only one that could give me thesort of power figures that I was lookingfor. The Focus was then mapped bySCC with the Revo software and takento AMD Essex to see what it could do.It was running 30PSI of boost, saysMark. And pulled 700bhp every time,

bar one run, where it pulled 733 andspun the wheels at the end. This isobviously with the addition ofwater/meth injection. The graph weveseen shows 694.8bhp and the best partof 600lb/ft of torque which is, quitefrankly, immense.

Notice he used the word was. That isbecause as we write the RS is going backfor yet more power. We are upgradingto a dual fuel pump system as the singleone was on its limits, says Mark. Wellbe adding more boost, too. So 740hbpshould be possible.

Obviously all this power isnt on astandard chassis, as competent as theMk2 RS is, 700bhp would be too muchfor the standard underpinnings. So thisone has Bilstein B16 coilovers fitted allround. Its also got a Summit racingupper-rear strut-brace. To help withgetting that ferocious amount of poweronto the tarmac a Whiteline anti-lift kithas been installed to alter the staticcastor of the wheels and improvetraction. Mark has also had a Drexlerlimited-slip di installed to providemaximum power to both front wheels. An AutoSpecialists quick-shift makesselecting gears quick and easy as theFocus devours the road. >

Obviously with this much power hittingthe tarmac, it has got some pace. But itsnot good having the pace if you cantstop it. So some K-Sport six-pot frontcalipers sit under 19 Rota GT alloywheels. The rear hasnt been overlooked, either, as this now has an SCC rear brakeupgrade kit fitted.

The Revo map is easily my favourite bitof the car, says Mark. But it was also thehardest part of the build. People love thepower of the car and all the littlemodifications and since Ive had thevinyl graphics done, it really stands out.Modifying cars is my hobby and Illalways do it. Im waiting for the next RSfor my next project, but in the meantime, well see where we can get withthis one.

Just when we think the Focus RS hasreached the top of its game, thetuning industry manages to eke a bitmore power from it. So we are in nodoubt that this is by no means the last

  • PF: So John, first things first in a world full of orange, yellow and blue Mk1 Escorts, why brown?!

JR: Its Tawny metallic bronze, its a proper 70s colour and I wanted to keep it original to the age of the car.

PF: Fair enough, it gets a big thumbs up from us. How long have you had it?

JR: I bought it three years ago, it came as a Mexico rep and was running a 1600 crossflow. It was also on standard arches, not even Mexico ones, so you could say its changed quite a bit since then.

PF: Did you have to spend much time with a welder before you could start getting it looking how you wanted?

JR: Fortunately, the shell was in very good condition as the previous owner

really liked the look so decided to go for it. I had them fitted by North West RS Centre, who also did the paint work.

PF: We cant help but notice that theres no longer a Pinto under the bonnet at what point did you upgrade to Cossie power?

JR: Not straight away, I actually changed the rear axle first to an Atlas from a Capri, along with the 3.09 diff. The gears were just too long for the Pinto though, it just felt flat, so I thought that one way to cure it would be to go for more power. Its got a shorter diff in it now as well, which feels just right.

PF: Whats the story with the YB, did it need tidying up at all before you fitted it?

JR: Not really, no, it had been rebuilt already by the guy I bought it from and >

had already restored it. It was rock solid, it even had the original floors which was just as well really as when it comes to mechanics I can do most things myself, but Im no good at the bodywork side of things.

PF: Thats a bonus! So what was the first thing you did to it?

JR: The 1600 crossflow didnt have enough power for me, so I swapped it out for a 2.1 Pinto. It was quite trick, with twin Webber 45s and a race spec cylinder head enough for a 168bhp anyway.

PF: Nice! What made you decide to ditch the standard bodywork and fit bubble arches then?

JR: It was just one of those things, Id seen them on cars at shows and just

  • was already running the T34 and stage three spec. Its only running 316bhp at the moment because I was in kind of a rush to get it finished in time for the Lakes Tour last year and had a bit of an issue with the gearbox I had it set up at Motoscope in Northallerton and it was a case of just getting it to run reliably rather than push it too far with too much power. As it happens, the gearbox was a little tired and ended up doing a bearing, which in turn did for the prop but its all been re-built now with a new gearset and the new diff, so it will be going back to Motoscope for a bit more power, as it should be good for 360bhp.

PF: That should keep you happy! We take it you fitted the engine yourself was this fairly hassle-free or did you run into any problems along the way?

JR: No it was dead easy really, once Id fitted the Grp4 tunnel that I got from Peter Lloyd Rallying, I started work on fitting the engine in Jan 2013 and had it up and running by March. One thing that I did try to do though was to get it looking as standard as I could, in so much as I didnt want a big intercooler on display. The rad and intercooler I got from Airtec, and they work really well. I also wanted to be able to use the boot space, so I avoided a rally-style fuel cell and modified the original fuel tank with an uprated Cossie pump.

PF: Good work. The interior looks very nice as well. No roll cages here to bash your head on!

JR: No, its essentially an RS2000 interior, with a six clock dash, RS2000 steering wheel and roll top seats. I had the carpets made specially to fit over the Grp4 tunnel.

PF: We have a sneaky suspicion that this isnt the first time youve got your hands dirty on a project car. Come on, spill the beans, what else have you owned over the years?

JR: Well, Ive had lots of Fords, and started out with Mk4 Escorts and RS Turbos before getting into the old school stuff. I had a nice Mk1 Cortina, a 2.8 Capri with a 5-litre Chevy engine in it and a 1971 four-door Escort that had

previously sat in a garage for 25 years. Then Escort had a 2-litre Pinto on carbs but I ended up selling it to fund the engine and archwork mods on this car. Oh, and Im also into my classic bikes. Ive just done up a Norton caf racer that I built to take to the Isle of Man TT!

PF: Classic bikes, eh? At least these must be easier and cheaper to build than cars, no?

JR: Not really. The Norton cost me about 10k to build.

    PF: Er, how?

JR: Well, the engine, which is a BSA Super Rocket 650 twin, wasnt cheap to build and its got these massive racing spec drum brakes they cost 2,500 alone.

PF: Wow. So, do you think youll ever get round to building another project car, or is the Escort here to stay?

JR: For the time being Im sticking with it. I only took it to a few shows last year, so didnt put many miles on it, and now the diff and ratios are sorted its really nice to drive. Once Ive taken it to Motoscope its going to get lots of use, trust me.

PF: Are you sure you wont be tempted to get a new toy at some point in the future? You have form, after all.

JR: Hmmm, actually I was thinking about a Mk2 Escort next year

PF: Ha! We thought so! Good luck with it, and let us know as and when its finished. PF

    PFVERSUS

    Our thoughts

Can the new Fiesta ST really be fun and frugal? We put it through a series of tests to find out.

    Words and Photos: Performance Ford

    Fuel Economy

We all know that the current Fiesta ST is a great car. Weve said it enough times and most of the motoring press has said the same thing. Its got great handling, its plenty fast, and it looks good, too. But one thing that has been

overlooked, and something that is in the back of a lot of our minds these days, is how much does it cost to run?

Its no secret that fuel is expensive and it goes without saying that if

PFVersusThis new regular feature will see Performance Ford being set different challenges each month. We figure why just write about something when we can actually get out there and do it, too? The challenges will vary widely, and will almost certainly involve a great deal of stress for Mr Morley, but in doing so, we hope to take on various different areas of the world of the Blue Oval. Sometimes well win, sometimes well lose but every time well give you a warts-and-all account of how it went. If the camera is working, we might even put some videos on YouTube.

The Challenge Okay, well start you off with an easy one: Its very rare to actually achieve the fuel economy figures that manufacturers give to new cars. Especially when they are as fun as the Fiesta ST. Can you beat the STs claimed combined figure of 47.9mpg? Oh, and youve got to use the car every day, for every journey, for a week.

P.S. Weve heard that The South Downs Way is quite a nice road

youve got a fast car, its going to be thirsty, too. But given that our Morley is a self-proclaimed master of the miles-per-gallon, the PF Powers-That-Be decided to launch a new regular feature by setting him and the Fiesta ST a number of challenges.

Whilst a fuel economy challenge might not necessarily be what Performance Ford is all about, it is a cunning task all the same. The reason being is that whilst I could probably achieve this figure quite

easily on the motorway at 55mph, Im not sure it will be quite so easy in every day use. Partly because its safe to say that you dont have a hot hatch like the ST without exploiting its hot hatch-ness on occasion. The

fact that the chassis is so good just goads you into playing silly buggers. Still, Im a big fan of this car and am quite happy to prove that it really is awesome in every way.

Every day, every journey, for a week easy. Ill drive from the petrol station, via the motorway, slowly, and

then stay at home for the rest of the week. So thats fifty quid in the tank and a cup of coffee for

    me!

ConclusionBefore we even begin, lets remember that this is a 215bhp hot hatch. Its a fast car make no mistakes. But being fast doesnt, or at least shouldnt, go hand in hand with being good on fuel.

It all started off very well. On the motorway we did see an average of over 60mpg from it. But this was driving at a constant 60mph with no hills or traffic to speak of. As you might expect, when you need to use the accelerator pedal, things do change somewhat. However, given the amount of urban miles that we actually did over the course of our 50 of Super Unleaded, we were pleasantly surprised to manage an average of 46.3mpg. We hasten to add that this was a genuine 46.3 miles per gallon. Ok, so we were driving to suit the challenge for a large part of it. But on our little road trip around the South Downs, there was some spirited driving. You simply cant avoid doing it in a car like this.

We also have to put our hands up and admit that we avoided using the heater, the heated seats and even the radio. Reason being is that the Fiesta has a smart-charge alternator system. This only charges the battery when it needs charging and, wherever possible, when you arent using the accelerator. This in turn puts less-load on the engine, which means it will use less fuel. By not using these luxuries, you really can notice the difference.

So we didnt quite match Fords economy figures, but were willing to bet that their driving wasnt as spirited as ours was at times. Its also worth noting that those figures are for the standard car, not the MP215 version. Whichever way you look at it, the fact that a pocket-rocket such as this can sip the fuel as daintily as it does, is a real credit to the boffins at Ford and Mountune.

    SHOWREPORT

Its the same every year. No sooner have you shaken off the New Years Day hangover, than you find yourself on the motorway heading to the NEC for the Autosport International show.

For many its the chance to meet up with others in the industry, to make plans for the year ahead, to get a good look at the latest products on the market or just to have a look at some good old-fashioned racing cars.

Many people feel that the show has gotten smaller with each passing year, but whether this is the case or not, there were still plenty of people strolling

Autosport International 2014A new year brings another Autosport show. These were the highlights of the most recent offering.

around the five or six halls of the NEC that it occupied. It is, predominantly a motorsport show but, in previous years stand-space had been occupied by a wide range of generic, car-related companies. The truth of the matter is probably that fewer of these are in attendance, but the core of the motorsport industry could be found there.

It was good to see familiar faces such as Burton Power, Hi-Spec, Rally Design and Demon Tweeks, who were all still exhibiting. It was also a positive sign that a few newer faces were present, in the shape of GRP4 Fabrications and 3J Driveline (in their second year). >

Omex Technologies had an impressive stand, we like their selection of turn-key Zetec and Duratec packages.

Another encouraging sign was the wide range of Fords on various stands throughout the show, cementing the fact that these cars that we covet seem to be good at everything.

For the real motorsport heads there was the usual F1 display area, as well as a BTCC area and a rally display, too. The live-action arena was also on the go over the course of the four days. In addition, there was a large Coys Auction display and even the chance to have a go at Autotesting in the car park. So, for the uninitiated, there was plenty to take in and do.

As usual, the Thursday and Friday were predominantly Trade days, with a separate area for traders to show off their wares. Then, on the Saturday and Sunday, when the general public are allowed in, this changes to the very popular Oval racing show.

In all, another great Autosport International and great to see so many Fords spread across so many different areas of motorsport. Its a shame the journey there has to involve the M6, but you cant win them all. Same time next year? See you there! PF

Ford were understandably shouting loudly about their EcoBoost engine, with a decent-sized stand, too!

Yes, its a Fiat. But its a very cool Fiat!

SHOWREPORT2013 NEC Classic MotorshowThe biggest indoor classic show of the year and we went along to check out the Blue Oval content

    Words and Photos: Ben Morley

The Classic Motorshow is not somewhere that you are going to find a 700bhp Focus RS, or even a full-fat Escort Cosworth. However, you will find a fine selection of very nice cars sporting the Blue Oval. In fact, you could go as far as to say that overall,

there were more Fords there than there was any other individual manufacturer.

As well as putting in a good showing on traders stands and being for sale, the sheer variation of differing Ford clubs really helped boost up the numbers. From the 100e owners club, through >

Not one of the originals, but Paul Thorpe has done a cracking job creating a road-going replica Zetec turbo power, too!

If you were feeling particularly flush, you could have bought this Group 4 Mk1 Escort. A mere 54,000 and it could have been yours.

If you had 6,000 in your pocket you could have come home the proud owner of this 44,000 mile Mk1 Escort Barn Find.

The Burton Power stand attracted some faces. From left to right: Mark Hales, Jumping Jeff Williamson, Stan Clark and our mate Barry Lee.

the AVO Owners Club, Cortina Owners Clubs and, of course, the RS Owners Club with plenty more in between. If you like a Ford, particularly one with classic status, you certainly wouldnt have come away disappointed.

The show was celebrating its 30th year and did so with aplomb as a post-event count-up revealed it was the busiest year to date further evidence that perhaps the country is slowly climbing out of recession. Either that, or us car-lot have decided to hell with it and pressed-on regardless.

As ever, the atmosphere around the event was good, which says a lot for what the guy
