Medanex Clinic is a CRO specialized in preclinical and clinical in vivo research using large animals
(rabbit, sheep, goat, (mini)pig, llama and horse).
Our main activities are preclinical surgical studies and surgery training for medical device,

basis.
Our in‐house equipment consists of state‐of‐the‐art operating theatres, intensive care units,

Pharmavize is a contract research organization developing prototypes of new medicines for testing in

Millibeter kweekt sinds september 2012 met succes de zwarte wapenvlieg (Hermetia illucens), voor
wetenschappelijke en commerciële doeleinden.
De focus ligt op onderzoek en ontwikkeling rond de larven van deze vliegensoort, en hun vermogen
om organisch afval om te zetten in nieuwe grondstoffen. Doel is om uit de biomassa van de larven
nieuwe grondstoffen te puren, en deze duurzame grondstoffen te valoriseren.
Het bedrijf ontwikkelt ook de infrastructuur om binnenkort ook op een industriële schaal te kunnen
kweken en afval te verwerken.

production line was build for the manufacturing of an enzyme replacement therapy for the
treatment of Pompe disease.

Continuous improvement to control the microbial content during the manufacturing of a biological
product (enzyme replacement therapy for rare diseases)
The Microbiology group of the Cell Culture and Microbiology division of the Technology Department
at Genzyme Flanders focuses on adequate contamination control on the microbial entry points, risks
to the process and product. Microbial contamination is a potentially high risk that may impact
biologic product quality and safety. The recent cases of bacterial contamination of biologic products
suggest that thorough understanding of microbial control at certain process steps is required.
Further, because endotoxin is directly related to gram‐negative contamination, extensive
measurement must be conducted. Additionally, endotoxin itself may be harmful for patients when
part of a biologic product when it enters the blood. The cost of inadequate microbial control can be
enormous, possibly resulting in facility shut down, and therefore, thorough investigations must be
conducted, the root cause identified and reoccurrence prevented.
METHODOLOGY AND/OR TECHNIQUES THAT WILL BE USED:
This project will evaluate findings and actions taken in order to identify cause of microbiological
contamination and identify future actions. Further, research‐tools to evaluate the microbiological
content concerning the manufacturing processes are available. The recent cases of bacterial
contamination on a particular process step suggest that thorough understanding of microbial control
at certain process steps is required and can also be applicable to other processes.

Development of an online health information platform for physicians and patients ‐ GO4CURE
The objective for the student is to assist in the development of the online platform for patients and
physicians, more specifically identifying and developing content for distinct disease areas: oncology,
auto‐immune diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. He or she will be involved in finalizing and
adjusting the business model and setting up collaborations with users (physicians, patients and
caregivers) and clients (industry, MHOs and medical care centers) as well as designing the
architecture and content presentation of the online platform.

‐ Medical database searches, using public or our own platform

Screening novel antibiotics in an in vitro gut model
The student will be involved in the development of an in vitro gut model that will be used to screen
novel antibiotics in treatment of artificially induced disease. The in vitro gut model is referred to as
the 'SHIME', which stands for 'Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem'. Focus will be
on in vitro activity and therapeutic efficacy of new agents in treatment of Clostridium difficile disease
and on their effects on the gut microbiota.

Serious gaming as a novel technology‐driven intervention for children with mental disease
To develop a prototype of serious games for groups of informal caregivers of children with mental
illnesses, which provides virtual caregiving experience by disclosing interlinks between caregivers’
actions and their possible consequences.

1) Literature study in two steps: a) in scientific databases via PsycInfo, MEDLINE and EMBASE; b) on
governmental and HONcoded websites. Included data were related to caregiver burden, caregiver
coping and patient quality of life; excluded publications were about professional caregivers or an
irrelevant disease.
2) The main learning and game elements were developed based on available software SERES
(MindBytes), using the theoretical game model of the Serious Games Institute (UK) and behavioral
oriented learning approach.
3) A structured interview to collect expert opinion about the game content.
4) Gameplay and discussion in a focus group of six experienced informal caregivers.

Biorelevante analyse van lipide‐gebaseerde geneesmiddelafgitesystemen
Zeer veel hedendaagse geneesmiddelkandidaten hebben een te lage wateroplosbaarheid om na
orale inname in voldoende mate geabsorbeerd te worden. Hierdoor is de gewenste therapeutische
respons vaak laag en variabel. Een vaak gebruikte manier om de opname van slecht waterloplosbare
geneesmiddelen te verhogen, bestaat erin om het geneesmiddel in te nemen als een oplossing in een
lipide. Ondanks de bewezen werkzaamheid van deze zogenaamde ‘lipidegebaseerde systemen’, is de
manier waarop deze systemen werkzaam zijn in vivo zeer complex. Het is dan ook zeer uitdagend om
via in vitro testen het in vivo effect te voorspellen. Binnen Pharmavize wordt er sedert enkele jaren
gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van in vitro testen die toelaten om de in vivo performantie van
lipidegebaseerde testen te voorspellen. Het gebruik van deze biorelevante in vitro testen laat toe om
het aantal (dure) dierproeven te verminderen, en zorgt er ook voor dat Pharmavize de selectie van
de juiste formulering kan onderbouwen met wetenschappelijke argumenten. Het onderzoekswerk
dat kadert binnen deze scriptie, is erop gericht om de huidige in vitro testprocedures voor
lipidegebaseerde systemen binnen Pharmavize verder te verfijnen, om ze zo wetenschappelijk
correcter, gebruiksvriendelijker en kosten‐efficiënter te maken.

Scaling of a spray dryer / congealer
In de groep van droogapparatuur bevindt zich de « 4M8‐TriX Spray Dryer » sproeidroger/koeler, op
de markt sinds 2006, die wordt gebruikt om met zeer kleine hoeveelheden (vanaf 0,5 ml) de eerste
sproeidroog en koel experimenten uit te voeren.
Sproeidrogen is veruit de meest gebruikte techniek om substanties in oplossing (water of organische
solventen), via verneveling in een warme luchtstroom, om te vormen tot een gedroogd poeder. De
nevel van vloeistofdruppels, met een grote oppervlakte/massa verhouding, laat toe om snel en
evenredig het water te verdampen in de warme luchtstroom. Toepassingen vind men in Pharma,
Biotec, Food en Fine Chemical industry
Eén van de grote voordelen van het sproeidroog proces is de accurate en flexible controle over de
fysische poedereigenschappen (deeltjesgrootte en morfologie, densiteit, vochtgehalte, specifiek
opppervlak…). De controle over deze poedereigenschappen zijn oa. afhankelijk van de formulatie en
enkele verschillende krititische proces parameters zoals :
Luchtinlaat : temperatuur, debiet.
Oplossing van de substantie : temperatuur, debiet, concentratie‐viscositeit.
Sproeikop : type (bi‐fluid, mono dispers, ultrasonic,…), debiet, opening.
Recent heeft PorCepT een sproeidroger /koeler gebouwd met een 5 meter droogkamer om een
grotere verblijftijd te geven aan de druppels, waardoor er grotere deeltjes gemaakt kunnen worden
dan in de 1,6 meter uitvoering.
ProCepT wenst met een thesis student een vergelijkende studie te doen van verschillende
formulaties die gedroogd en gekoeld worden in de 1,6 en de 5 meter proceskamer. De deeltjes
worden statistisch geanalyseerd met een Laser Diffractie Toestel op grootte en op vorm. Het

Development of cell free DNA based diagnostic assays
Cell free DNA (cfDNA) is a relative new class of DNA that is more and more used to developed
diagnostic tests in the oncology field. The advantage of cfDNA is that it can be obtained in a non
invasive way (simple phlebotomy), which is especially interesting in the development of diagnostic
and prognostic cancer tests.
However, given the physical properties of cfDNA, eg. Short DNA fragments (50‐200bp), short half life
time, relatively low cfDNA concentrations, etc. It is challenging to use cfDNA as input DNA source for
the development of diagnostic tests.
Nevertheless, targeted multiple PCR is the ideal technology to developed cfDNA based diagnostic
tests and has the potential to lead to highly competitive tests.

Sexually Transmitted Infections remain a major global public health issue. The World Health
Organization (WHO) estimates that worldwide, 448 million new cases are diagnosed. About 35
million people are infected with HIV and 130‐150 million with Hepatitis C. Therefore, it is crucial to
have quick and reliable diagnostic tests to identify infections in early state to prevent the spread of
these diseases.
BioMARIC focuses on the development of accurate and quick diagnostic tests to detect for example
HIV, which can be used at the point of care. In the proposed project, the production of a
recombinant virus protein is optimized for use in such a diagnostic test.
The gene coding for a virus protein is cloned and expressed in E. coli, the resulting protein is purified
and formulated. In this project, not only the fermentation is optimized, but also the purification and
the formulation aiming a high production efficiency, a high product quality and a long term stability.
