    On ugust 5, a crowd-unding

    campaign was launched to help

    lessen the fnancial burden o

    &srael s0eleton competor .J.

    +delman>s training in the

    CD9BE98 season.

    @ast year, +delman had

    our successul races that

    landed him F9st in world

ran0ings and ualifed him or aspot in the #orld

    Hhampionships in &gls, ustria.

$his coming season, he will be

    parcipang in 9C-9B more

    races, through which he hopes

to ualiy or the CD95 #inter Olympics in (yeongchang, outh Iorea.

+delman, a sel-idenying Orthodo" Jew, grew on the east coast and a!ended college at

2&$, but a gap year, which he spent studying at eshivat @ev *atorah in amat 3eit hemesh,

helped inspire him to 1oin the &srael 3obsleigh and 0eleton /ederaon aer graduang in CD9:.

$he &3/ was ounded in CDDC. Originally called the =&sraeli Naonal 3obsleigh $eam,?

0eleton was added to the program in CDDF. &n CD99, member 3radley Hhalups0i fnished fh

place at the merica>s Hup s0eleton race in @a0e (lacid, New or0, to win &srael>s frst ever medal

in the sport K and the last to date.

+delman is &srael>s only acve s0eleton athlete or the CD9BE98 season.

*e is as0ing the public or donaons partly because, the way he sees it, compeng in an

unconvenonal sport li0e s0eleton K the cousin sport o bobsled K can help thwart others Jews

rom succumbing to the stereotype that they are =nonathlec and uncoordinated.?

&t is a percepon he vowed to fght during his senior year o college, when he was the

only sel-idenying Jew on his hoc0ey team.

=#hen we went out to restaurants, everyone thought & couldn>t eat because the ood

hadn>t been blessed by a rabbi,? +delman recalled to The Jerusalem Post this wee0. =$hey hadnever been e"posed to one. & always 0new Jews were thought to be uncoordinated, and &

reali)ed then that a huge part o what 0eeps that stereotype alive is that so many Jews all into

    it themselves.?

    $he CB-year-old +delman frst learned o s0eleton that year when he stumbled upon a

    compeon on $L.

=& was capvated by what & saw,? he recalls. =&t seemed li0e a challenging and e"cing

sport, and it had the added beneft o having ewer Jews than hoc0ey does.?

'nl then, +delman had fgured he would 1oin the &sraeli Naonal *oc0ey $eam aer

    graduaon.

er researching this new, unamiliar sport, and trying it out, he was hoo0ed.

=&t is the most challenging and un e"perience & have had the pleasure o parcipang

in,? he said in an interview with &ndiegogo, the global undraising site hosng his campaign. =&was blessed to have been one o the ew rom my community to have reached a high level o

sport. Jewish and &sraeli athletes act as ambassadors o their community, people and homeland,

and there are ar too ew.?

& there was any way to demonstrate that Jews were as athlecally s0illed and durable as

any anyone else, it was by compeng in s0eleton.

/irstly, there is the sheer diversity o s0ills involvedM a trying mi" o strength, agility,

    power, intelligence and guts.

=&t is the most athlec and challenging sport &>ve ever played,? said +delman. =nd &>ve

    been profcient in many sports.?

    &mmediately aer lunging rom a 8D-meterlong sprint onto a 9B8 0ilometer per hour

plunge down the ice trac0, the athlete must calm himsel, lower his heart rate to a normal level,

and maintain a degree o mental clarity that most o us can only manage in peaceul, noiseless

    rooms.

=ny involuntary movement will apply pressure to the metal rudders and cause the sled

    to change direcon.?

+delman credits both his advantages and struggles in the sport to his career as an

    engineer.

=& thin0 a lot,? he says. =2ore than your average person. /or the most part that is

helpul. & & am aware o how certain shoulder posions apply pressure to the sled, & can use

them to dip lower, or ride higher in the corner, as needed. $oo oen, though, thin0ing translates

into rigorous planning.2any things can go wrong at 9B8 0ilometers an hour over the course o one-and-a-hal

0ilometers and 9 di7erent curves. 0eleton is all about conngencies, about thin0ing at the

    right moments.?

/or an &sraeli to e"perience those challenges K to get involved in a sliding sport at all K is

a massive eat in its own right. 3y doing so, +delman hopes he can inspire other Jews to see0,

discover, and e"plore unconvenonal sports as he has.

#inter sports are e"tremely underrepresented in &srael, or obvious geographical and

    logiscal reasons.

esources, coaches, and training acilies are all scarce and reuire ludicrous amounts o

me, money, and travel. /or o7-season training, only two locaons in North merica K in (ar0

Hity, 'tah, and in @a0e (lacid, New or0 K have pracce trac0s or s0eleton athletes.

#ith the demands and responsibilies o lie, ew s0eleton competors can a7ord to live

near these places. +delman has spent the last month in (ar0 Hity but had to return to Haliornia

on 2onday to wor0 his ull me 1ob as a product manager or Oracle. *e sll trains at a gym,

but he now has to drive C9D 0ilometers daily to get there, and although he can sll pracce the

sprinng aspect o the sport with an e"ercise called the =push,? he has to se!le or indirect ways

to pracce the other aspects, li0e the e"plosive power needed or lunging onto the sled.

rin0s where aspiring players can pracce. lthough relavely unpopular among &sraeli athletes,

the sport is not undere"posed to the point that it has become borderline impraccal to pursue.

+delman could have stuc0 with it.

*owever, he maintains that &srael>s near-total obliviousness to s0eleton is, despite the

obstacles it creates, a large part o what ma0es his role in the sport valuable.

=2any people who draw poorly as a child confrm right then and there that, or their

nd Jews tend to be this way about sportsM a lot Jews gave up on all the convenonal

shut themselves o7 rom sports they have never even seen. nd i they can become ambious

    The Canna)is Resistance

    Perso&al lo'

    August 5, 2015

Unli0e in the ', medical mari1uanaresearch in &srael can be conducted in part

and parcel o what is allowed by the

government. ince the early 9FDs, the

country has been a world leader in such

    research, drawing a!enon rom lawma0ers

all over the globe. One would e"pect &sraeli

oRcials to stand proudly in the oreront o

    social progression.

    3ut a meeng held $uesday by the

Inesset Hommi!ee o ;rug and lcohol buse to discuss progressive policy changes showed

otherwise. @ess than hal o the members showed up.

$he &sraeli *ealth 2inistry had 1ust announced that paents licensed to receive cannabis

would soon be able to purchase the drug straight rom a pharmacy, rather than having to go

through a grower or a distributor.

&t was a change that Inesset Hommi!ee Hhairman 2I Sandberg, who arranged the

meeng, had supported, much to the disheartenment o 99 commi!ee members.

=&srael is not Holorado yet,? wrote Inesset member 2I +li Hohen in a le!er to Sandberg.

=nd even i you want to promote your personal agenda to legali)e so drugs, it would be

be!er i you ormed a caucus or it.?

    &n a 1oint statement, the boyco!ers accused Sandberg o trying to turn the commi!ee

=into the caucus to promote cannabis, instead o the goal or which the commi!ee was ormedM

to fght drug abuse and drug-related crimes.?

$o (roessor aphael 2echoulam, an organic chemist whose research in 9FDs &srael

1umpstarted cannabis research throughout the world, the boyco! is 1ust another e"ample o

how oRcials ail to recogni)e that there is a di7erence between the regulaon o recreaonal

and medical mari1uana.=urely, society has every right to decide on the ormer,? says 2echoulam. =3ut or the

la!er, the decision needs to be built on the same basis as all drugs.?

$hat basis is simpleM ;rugs are regulated individually based on their medical benefts and

potenal or abuse. & the pros o a drug outweigh its cons, and the cons are manageable,

doctors may prescribe that drug with cauon.

    9

  • 7/23/2019 Perfect Portfolio.pdf

    12/33

Hannabis does cause some addicons in about 9D percent o heavy users, 2echoulam

admits, but more importantly, it has been shown to alleviate symptoms o, and somemes cure,

a number o detrimental ailments and condionsM l)heimerTs disease, $oure!e yndrome,

epilepsy, arthris, analgesia, and many more.

=s o now, the ministry approves medical cannabis or a limited number o medicalreasons,? says 2echoulam. =$hough & hope that will soon be improved.?

2echoulam a!ributes these limitaons partly to an oversimplifed view o the drug.

3ecause there are ewer than C:,DDD medical mari1uana paents in &srael a number that the

new legislaon is li0ely to increaseP, most &sraelis have only seen mari1uana in its illicit,

ambiguous orm. #e understand legal drugs li0e opiates and barbiturates to be synthecally

altered and controlled, but when it comes to mari1uana, pot is potU maybe good pot, maybe

    bad pot, but simply pot.

ciensts didnTt 0now any be!er, either, unl about BD years ago, when 2echoulam and

his colleagues at the oc0eeller &nstute decided to tac0le the chemistry o the then-poorlyunderstood narcoc. 3y studying mari1uana given to them by law enorcement, 2echoulam and

his team were able to isolate and synthesi)e several acve compounds in cannabis.

=#hen tal0ing about cannabis, it should really be specifed which cannabinoid you are

reerencing,? 2echoulam notes. =$he term cannabis alone means nothing.alon>s vow to

    crac0 down on Jewish terrorism

    certainly seems warranted.

    3ut the sheer level o

    tragedy raises uesons as to

whether such a crusade is even

praccal. &t is tempng to believe

    otherwiseM there are endless

    e"amples o the power o

e"tremism and ar ewer to suggestit can be countered.

    3ut such e"amples do e"ist.

    Hhrisan (icciolini lives in

movaonal spea0er was not so di7erent rom the bomber. &ndeed, some memories he can hardly bear.

Out o the pain, though, comes hope, and that is why he has chosen to tell his story in his

    upcoming autobiography, omanc LiolenceM 2emoirs o n merican 0inhead.

#hen he was 9B, Hhrisan was smo0ing a 1oint in an alleyway o downtown Hhicago when a man

rolled up in a vehicle, stepped out, and snatched the drugs out o his hand. &t was Hlar0 2artell, ounder

o Hhicago rea 0inheads. =;on>t you 0now that>s what the capitalists want you to do to 0eep youdocileX? Hlar0 yelled.

Hhrisan had been e"pelled rom school and had become numb to =that>s wrong? and =stop

$he ma1ority o &sraelis, who do recogni)e Jewish terrorism to be baseless and horrifc, are

    beginning to eel this way.

ince the stabbing at the Jerusalem Gay (ride /esval on July :D, most cricisms are directed

toward the police and their ailure to intervene in terrorist a!ac0s, to catch the perpetrators once their

a!ac0s are ormulated and put into acon.

Hhrisan (icciolini, however, did not need to be loc0ed away or his stash o guns and other

weaponry, which he 0ept in case he and his brothers ever elt a governmental overthrow was necessary.

*e had to escape rom the prison he was already in.#hen (icciolini opened his record store in 9FFB, his goal was sll the same. 48 percent o what

he was selling was #hite (ower music. $he other C86, though, drew in people o all di7erent

    reali)e that & had a lot in common with them and & reali)ed & couldn>t 1usy the eelings & was having

anymore,? he said during an interview with Noisey Lice, a music news blog.

large part o stopping Yedgling terrorists may be e"posureM amiliari)ing Jews with sectors o

their religion other than their own. poll conducted last month by the &sraeli 'nity (ro1ect revealed

ma1or shortcomings in that departmentM nearly hal o haredim ultra-Orthodo" JewsP have no

+%nger was, arguably, born into an intolerant environment K more so than the streets odowntown Hhicago.

#hat holds that intervenon bac0, perhaps, is the belie that such e7orts would surely be ule.

Gesher chairman ;aniel Goldman has called on &sraelis to encourage construcve conversaons and

debates among di7erent sectors o Judaism in the educaon system as a way to prevent that sort o

tunnel vision. #hile 596 o respondents they would be able to approach these conversaons with an

open mind, only 9:6 elt that open-mindedness was li0ely to resonate within the ne"t fve years.

3radley havit rtson, vice president o merican Jewish 'niversity, reminds us that change is

enrely possibleM the two sectors o Judaism are not, and have never been, in total opposion o one

another.=@oo0 at all the areas in which Jews cooperate across denominaonal lines,? he wrote in Sieglar.

=& the problem isn>t one o a lac0 o common ground, maybe the problem is one o ideology.?

@ast wee0, the streets o Jerusalem and $el viv were li!ered with crumpled posters o the

stabbing and frebombing vicms. nd a /aceboo0 post by (resident euven ivlin, in which he

condemned the e"tremists who carry out those 0inds o a!ac0s, was li!ered with threats rom &sraelis

who were enraged to see that the (alesnian community was being shown any sympathy whatsoever.

$hat alone is a massive issue. Just as we should not react to rab terrorists with Jewish terrorists,

    13

we should not chal0 up the la!er group to the same unsupported, counter-producve noons o evil

usually would )ust start writing new material, and whoever was closest to whatever instrument played that or wrote

that part, which meant en, +ean and # would all rotate on bass and guitars We decided that it would be best to stick
