Eichhornia crassipes, a prolific floating plant better known as water hyacinth, has long menaced canals, rivers and lakes throughout Thailand. But now, metre by metre thanks to ingenuity and hard work, the Thai people are winning back territory previously lost.

A single water hyacinth plant generates enough seeds to produce 3,000 offspring in just over a month – a hectare of water hyacinth can double in size in just 8 days. Over time it forms a mat of floating foliage dense enough for people to walk across, blocking boats and fishing nets.

It steals sunlight and oxygen, proving hazardous to aquatic plants and fish. Harvesting the plants, villagers dry them for a few days in the sun and when the stalks turn to a golden brown colour they are then ready for braiding.

Yothaka International have over 200 employees, plus more than 1,000 villagers who harvest and dry the plants

before weaving them into braid.

Yothaka International alone consumes more than 8,000 kilometres of water hyacinth braid each year.

Water hyacinth is a naturally green product and no harmful chemicals are used to process the plant – a great new environmentally friendly material, which also generates income for local farming families.

New materials are - Yan Lipao a very fine fern vine and Polyethylene plastic for the outdoor collection.

The water hyacinth plant is a spongy tropical water weed

commonly found in the rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia.

Water hyacinth grows densely in clumps of 8-10 stems each

measuring an average of 60-80cm in length.

The rapid water hyacinth growth in Thailand has caused

waterway clogging, resulting in water pollution. Substantial

government spending is invested to endeavour to eradicate

this problem. Along with manufacturer incentive schemes this

has created active participation of local people to clear water

hyacinth from the waterways. Water hyacinth is now a cash crop

for many rural Thai people.

Yothaka water hyacinth furniture is made by creative artists

and master craftsmen. The complete process is carried out

by Yothaka International ensuring consistency and quality of

each piece.

Yan Lipao basketry is a traditional Thai Handcraft, which dates

back as far as the early Rattanakosin dynasty (150 years ago).

Thanks to the interest and support of Her Majesty Queen

Sirikit of Thailand, it’s popularity continues to the present day.

Yothaka International were inspired by this prestigious history to

create a brand new limited edition furniture line from Yan Lipao.

Each piece is made by hand over a 45 to 60 day period by only

the most skilled craftsmen.

Yan Lipao is a fern vine that grows abundantly only in the forests

of southern Thailand. This vine, which has an average diameter of

2-3mm, is naturally available in 2 colours, dark brown and red.

The vine once collected is peeled with the outer part being

stripped from the pith and hung to dry naturally in the shade. The

dried Lipao is then polished and smoothed out before the

weaving process begins.

1. Use the vacuum cleaner to remove dust.

2. Wash with mild soap and water, then dry.

3. Brush with nylon brush to remove dry food or mud etc..

4. A paint thinner can be used to remove tougher stains.

For major liquid spills, remove all upholstery, wash the water hyacinth with mild soap and water, and place outside or in a drying room to dry. Please note that it is important that the furniture is dried and not remain wet or damp for any length of time as this will result in mould and subsequent deterioration of the water hyacinth furniture.

Water hyacinth is a natural untreated handmade product and will absorb moisture and dry out in direct relation to climate conditions. To avoid any deterioration it is recommended that the environment be dry and well ventilated.

Special Notes:

Chocolate and Charcoal coloured water hyacinth is a stained natural product and colours may vary. Perfect Pieces Limited accepts no responsibility for any colour variation or fading.

Conditions of sale are provided with all advice notes, invoices and quotations.1 GENERAL 1.1 These conditions apply to all goods supplied by the Seller - Perfect Pieces Limited. 1.2 The Seller and Buyer acknowledge that these conditions constitute the entire agreement between them and that there have been no representations made by either party to the other except such as are expressly set out in these conditions of sale. If there is any ambiguity or inconsistency between the terms of any order lodged by the Buyer and these conditions these conditions shall be paramount. 1.3 These conditions may not be amended or substituted without the express prior written consent of the Seller.2 GOODS SUPPLIED 2.1 The goods supplied shall be the goods described on the invoice (“the contract”).3 DELIVERY 3.1 Delivery shall be in accordance with the contract unless otherwise agreed in writing by the parties. (Note: if payment of the deposit is delayed then the delivery time is correspondingly extended.) 3.2 If the contract stipulates a time for delivery of the goods such time shall be approximate only and shall not be deemed to be the essence of the contract. 3.3 The Seller shall not be responsible for any failure to deliver or delay in delivery caused by any Act of God, war, strike, industrial stoppage or unrest, fire, earthquake, shortage of suitable labour or materials, unavailability of or delay in transportation, Government Act or any other event beyond the Sellers control. 3.4 The Seller shall not in any circumstances be responsible for any loss or damage caused by delay in delivery of the goods.4 PAYMENT - CONTRACT ACCOUNTS 4.1 A deposit of fifty (50) percent of the prices specified in the contract (“contract price”) shall be paid with all orders. The Seller shall not be obliged to supply goods or confirm orders until such time as the deposit has been paid. 4.2 Unless otherwise agreed the remainder of the contract price shall be paid on delivery. PAYMENT - WHOLESALE ACCOUNTS 4.3 Strictly net 20th following the date of invoice. PAYMENT - TRADE ACCOUNTS 4.4 Strictly net seven days from the date of invoice. PAYMENT - CONTRACT, WHOLESALE & TRADE ACCOUNTS 4.5 Goods and Services Tax shall be in addition to the contract price unless otherwise stipulated. 4.6 On cancellation of any order the Seller shall be entitled to deduct from the deposit and/or charge any costs incurred by the Seller to the date of cancellation.5 INTEREST FOR LATE PAYMENT - ALL ACCOUNTS 5.1 If the Buyer fails to comply with the terms of payment the Buyer shall pay interest to the Seller at a rate of 2% per month on all monies outstanding under the contract calculated on a daily basis from the date the monies became due to the date the monies are received by the Seller.6 OWNERSHIP 6.1 All goods remain the property of the Seller until payment for the goods and any other monies due under the contract have been received in full. If the Buyer fails to comply with the terms of payment the Seller at its option itself or by its servants or agents may enter upon the premises of land or any other place where the goods are situated and take possession of such goods and the Buyer shall fully indemnify the Seller in respect of any claim or demand brought in respect of such actions.7 RISK 7.1 Notwithstanding the provisions in clause 6 herein the Buyer shall be responsible for any loss, damage or deterioration of the goods due to any cause whatsoever from the date of delivery of the goods.8 WARRANTY 8.1 The Seller warrants that it will repair or make good any defects in the goods or workmanship notified in writing to the Seller within seven (7) days of delivery of the goods provided the terms of payment are complied with promptly. 8.2 No claim shall be accepted under such warranty unless, written notice of the claim is received by the Seller within the stated time period nor shall any claim be accepted if any attempt to repair the defective goods is made by any person or persons not authorised by the Seller to effect such repairs. 8.3 Should the Seller elect to repair any defective goods such repair shall be effected at such place as the Seller may specify and the Buyer shall be responsible for shipment of the defective goods to and from the place or places so specified. 8.4 The liability of the Seller whether in contract or in tort for any loss, damage or injury arising directly or indirectly from any defect in the goods supplied is limited to replacement or repair of such goods or damages not exceeding the contract price of such defective goods at the option of the Seller.9 RETURNS 9.1 No goods may be returned by the Buyer without prior agreement with the Seller. The Seller reserves the right to refuse the return of any goods supplied. 9.2 No returns will be subject to credit unless the Seller has authorised. 9.3 It is the Buyer’s responsibility to ensure that all goods returned are properly packed and in excellent condition. Damaged goods will not be accepted. 9.4 A standard handling charge of twenty (20) percent plus the cost of carriage will be made for returning goods unless otherwise authorised by the Seller.10 WAIVER 10.1 The failure on the part of the Seller to exercise or enforce any rights conferred by the contract or these conditions shall not be deemed to be a waiver of any such rights nor operate so as to bar the exercise or enforcement thereof at any time or times thereafter.
