JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ARTS I4TH JULY I950 than 500 words on their impressions of the Percy Smith Memorial Exhibition, and to write out formally or letter, using any style preferred, the following heading :

THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ARTS PRESIDENT: H.R.H. THE PRINCESS ELIZABETH

We were instructed to take into consideration not only the subject matter and composition but also the handwriting of the essay and, in the writing of the heading, the layout and spacing as well as the form of the letters.

Only two entries were received but both proved of interest and of equal merit, the standard being considerably higher than had been expected. We therefore recommend that the prize of £5 offered in this Section be divided equally between Michael John Coucher (Bishop's Stortford College) and Peter Awbery White (Rutlish School).

Section (B) of the Competition was open to Students of Art Schools who were required to letter, using any single style of lettering preferred, the following eight capital letters from the alphabet: A, B, E, M, O, R, S, and Y; and to write formally, in whatever style preferred, using if desired some form of decoration for the initial letter "O", an extract from a Cantor Lecture delivered to the Society by Percy Smith in 1936.

Twenty-two candidates entered this Section, and again the general standard was agreeably high, although no entry showed very markedly any individual characteristics or conveyed an impression of a definite personality. Of a number of well conceived and executed entries we finally selected two, and therefore recommend that the award of £10 offered in this Section be divided equally between Miss Gloria Mary Rollinson (Goldsmith's College Art School) and Miss Eileen Barbara Shone (Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute). THE SOCIETY'S CHRISTMAS CARD

Following the success of the experiment last year of publishing a Christmas Card for the use of Fellows, the Council has invited Miss Anna Zinkeisen, R.D.I. , R.O.I., to design a card of a similar kind this year, with a painting of the Queen driving in the State Coach to the Great Exhibition of 1851 repro- duced in full colour on the front. The folded card will be of the same size as last year, 8 J by 6 J inches ; the Season's Greetings will be printed on the inside right-hand page; and it will be possible for the name and address of a Fellow to be added for an extra charge.

It is hoped to publish a reproduction of Miss Zinkeisen 's painting in a future issue of the Journal , and this first announcement is intended primarily to allow Fellows resident overseas to despatch their orders in time to reach the Secretary at the latest by 30th September. Unless orders are received by that date, the cards may not reach distant places in time to be re-despatched in the Christmas mails.

Fellows who wish to place an order for cards are asked to do so on the special Order Form which will be found, together with further details, on the last

page of this issue of the Journal. 7°9
