What are Percussion Instruments?
❖ “Percuss” - means to strike on or against
❖ Percussion instruments sound when they are struck, shaken, or rubbed.
❖ Really, anything could be a percussion instrument!

Where does the sound come from?
We know that sound is a VIBRATION!
❖ Vibrating Bodylike the cowbell, woodblock, or xylophone
❖ Vibrating Headlike the bongos or bass drum
❖ Vibrating Stringlike the piano

❖ Percussion instruments are some of the oldest musical instruments
❖ All cultures have used percussion instruments
❖ Percussion instruments were very ritualistic and had many purposes
❖ Artifacts of ancient instruments have been found all over the world
