From the Principal! Cracking Sports Day Well the weather held off for just long enough yesterday and the sun peeked through briefly. Despite the cranky magpie forcing some last minute changes to the set up the day went really well. The parents and students that I spoke to enjoyed being together as a whole college for the day. A big thank you to the secondary school students who came along as helpers – we all really appreciate your time and effort to make our day a success. Thank you also to the parent helpers and the staff who kept us to time and encouraged everyone. Well done to all of the students who participated and put in the effort– the journey is always so much more important than the destination NAPLAN is coming Families of students in Year 3 and 5 will receive their NAPLAN results next week. I am thrilled to share with you that across the whole college our students’ results in reading and writing have improved since 2018. This is very exciting and makes us all very proud of each and every student! It also shows us that the Peranbin PC Instructional model the Readers and Writers Workshops are supporting all students to achieve greater success. In 2018 56% of our Year 5 students achieved high and medium growth in writing. This year the number has risen to 70%. Our students have achieved better growth than the averages for the State, Similar Schools and the Strathbogie/Moira Network in reading and spelling, and we are on par for writing and grammar and punctuation. Our numeracy results tell us that this is an area we will focus on going forward. Well done to the students for their achievements – we are very proud of you! Another great week under our belts with yesterday’s athletics day a standout. The warmer weather of spring was welcomed too, including the heaters turned off midway through our days and doors being deliberately left open.

Athletics Day It was another great day for the whole college to come together as one in Benalla for the Athletic Sports. Despite a few spits of rain around lunchtime and the occasional swopping magpie, the day went off with a bang. Congratulations to Green House for taking out the overall honours on the day. We will have more information next week, including some student comments and photos. Congratulations to everyone who ran, threw, jumped and cheered.

Dusty Shines Through In the space of a week Dusty had a great deal to celebrate from being awarded the Most Improved player in his Benalla footy team, to turning 11 and competing at the athletics sports. Thanks for sharing your birthday with us and bringing along scrumptious chocolate ripple cake.

Father’s Day Raffle As promised last week the winners of the Father’s Day Raffle were the Gerrans family taking home the monster 1st prize and Logan Moore snaffling a second bag of goodies. We were pleased to hear that the goodies were not only being enjoyed by the lucky dads in both families.

Have a great weekend, Dianne, Pauline, Princess Robbie, Barb and Kate

On Thursday 19th September we will be holding our annual Footy Colours Day. This day is loads of fun for everyone, even if you don’t follow AFL or know anything about it. The day is all about us being together, having some fun and learning and supporting each other at school. It is also about raising some money and awareness for kids who are not able to be at school running around and playing all sorts of games with friends because they are instead living with and dealing with cancer.

Our day involves EVERYONE dressing in their favourite team’s colours (and it can be from any sport, not just AFL), completing a quiz, learning some fundamental footy skills and completing a raft of tasks across literacy, numeracy and the arts, all with an AFL theme. We also provide a meat pie for lunch – sooooo footy!

We are very lucky to have former students and member of the Richmond FC Next Generation Academy, Charlie McCarthy and Colby Mathieson, joining us and running the skills session.

What you need to do: a gold coin donation permits you to dress in your favourite team’s colour and return your PIE REPLY SLIP (attached to this week’s newsletter) to make sure you get fed.

During Tuesday’s MARC (Library) Van session with Mrs Davies, the kids read Chalk Boy, written by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Mandy Ord. “A soulful and heart-warming story about what happens when a pavement artist’s drawing comes to life.” Inspired by the book, here is a little taste of what our kids wanted to create.

We are nearing the end of Term 3 which means the children are starting to get a bit tired so we are making the next two weeks as relaxing as we can. We started the week off with looking at the letter G and the two sounds it makes. The children made a great list of words starting to with G. Tuesday we had Flo and Ms. Weeks for Music and Health. It is great to see all the children get so involved in Music. They are constantly learning new songs and rhythms with Flo.

Wednesday as everyone was feeling a bit tired we made some beautiful letterboxes out of kinder squares. This was the beginning of looking at procedural reports as the students had to follow a set of instructions to fold their letterbox.

At lunch we tested our boats that we had been working on over the last week. Well done to all the Juniors who made a boat. Congratulations to Alex Dove whose boat held the most weight in the Junior classroom. His boat held 700grams before it sank.

Thursday it was all about athletics. It was great to see all our children at Benalla to compete in the school Athletic Sports day. The children all competed so well and gave everything a good try. Thank you to all the parents who came along and watched and supported the children on the day.

Friday we had Library which the students love with Mrs. Davies. The children were able to return and borrow books.

Next week on Thursday we have our trip to Echuca. Please ensure that permission forms as returned no later than Tuesday. The bus will be leaving school at 9am sharp so please be at school no later than 8:55am.

We hope you have a great weekend and we will see you next week.

Monique and Kimberley

The week that was –

One of the big undertakings for the students of the Senior Class has been editing in Writing. Students have had to look at a paragraph and fix all the mistakes in it, like changing misspelt words and adding capital letters, full stops and apostrophes for possession. The more they have been practicing, the better they have been getting. And it will then flow into their own writing.

In Maths, we have just finished the unit on Measurement. Students enjoyed all the hands on activities to help them learn about Mass, Weight, Volume (Liquid) and Capacity.

The Athletics Carnival!!

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Athletics Carnival. Everyone tried their very best and quite a few PB’s (Personal Bests) were broken. I was with the 10 year old group and was very impressed with all the students who competed in (almost) every event. Well done to Ms. Weeks for organising the event so well. And we even managed to finish all the events early. Once again, a great effort by all.

Next Thursday is the excursion to Echuca to see the paddle steamers and go to the transport museum. Remember to bring a packed lunch!

Next Friday we are having our reward for those students who have read more than 75 nights this year. We are going to watch a movie (student chosen), and student can bring a small snack to enjoy while watching the movie.

Don’t forget to look at the roster for the tin rattle on the next market. This is a major fundraiser for the Violet Town campus. Make sure you can attend on your allocated time, and if not, organise with another family to swap.

Wire & Plaster Sculpture

Thursday 26 September 10 – 11:30AM

Renowned Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901 – 1966) is the inspiration for

this special sculpture workshop. His impossibly tall, elongated figures are often

shown walking and appear almost weightless.

In this workshop you will make people and animals from wire and plaster –

perhaps in the style of Giacometti. We will show you how to construct your

sculpture to create something really special to take home.

Note: Wear suitable clothing that can withstand a messy activity!

Cost: $12 members & $15 non-members Ages 5 – 12 YRS

Bookings essential: p. 03 5760 2619 e. [email protected]

Kind regards,
