Description

LED backlit Holographic Lenticular print based on original oil painting of the same size. When William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted his beautiful painting "Dawn" in 1881 he had intuited fractal geometry, fluid dynamics, the discovery of DNA and Nuclear Mysticism. While critics of the time labeled the work as simply romantic, it and may of Bouguereau's works offer so much more. The fractal while highly mechanical, still offers the same form and flow as can be seen by comparing the original Bouguereau on the left to the fractal background on the right. In this combination of the organic and mechanical, it can be seen as the same liquid dynamics event. One where all of the geometry is ascending. This quality of ascension is closely tied to DNA. The double helix of DNA acts as a ladder for this earthly being to rise.

This is a digital photo, which is a self portrait that I directed. I made it for my identity project at the end of my photo class last year. The entire project was based on my experience as an outspoken black woman in a predominantly white institution, and this photo was a really important depiction of that. My outspokenness makes me feel super isolated at times, but it also is what sets me apart from my peers in a positive and powerful light. My feelings of isolation in my outspokenness, but pride in my blackness are represented in the high contrast and twinkle in my eyes in this photo. Although I've only written about the photo which focuses most closely on my face, I've also uploaded the other photos, which are based on the same inspiration and complete the project.

Dance has been a primary way to celebrate life events in all cultures past and present. This transfixed dancer was inspired by a photo that I saw in the NY Times of a vase from a dig in Iran (Ancient Persia). I created a stencil of one dancer and use it over and over until the ritual is completed. These works are collage, colored pencil and stitching.

As a part of a photographic reimagination of Quentin Tarantino's cult classic film, "Reservoir Dogs," "A Day's Work" juxtaposes the formal expectations of the white-collar workplace with its injurious encroachment on the work-life balance of the middle-class. The film follows six unidentified hired criminals after a heist gone wrong, collectively determined to expose the undercover cop amongst them. Their descent into tumult and progressively darker tactics parallels the gradual corruption of a prospective entrant to the professional world as depicted in “A Day’s Work.” Likewise, the anonymous identity of the main subject allows the viewer to project themselves into the broken position occupational life has come to hold in our society.

Chilling moments from the 1970s and 80s television series, "Little House on the Prarie" are visually recounted and rearranged in a luminous, discombobulated, chromatic narrative. This storyline recalls a seminal episode in which the son, Albert, overdoses on morphine, and is comforted by his father. In my retelling, Albert then embarks upon a synesthesian hallucination in which he is fused with the fabric softener mascot, "Snuggle." During the original broadcast of the program, "Snuggle" would likely have been advertised in a commercial. In a world where marketing has reached new extremes, I propose the next frontier may be our own memory. In a world where marketing reaches previously unimaginable extremes, commodifying and branding the next frontier may be our own memory — or already is."
