2017 - 2018 Annual Report | Page 1

Our annual general meeting is a chance for us to highlight our work, our people and our passion. It is a time to reflect upon our accomplishments over the last year while also looking ahead to the future.

Career Trek’s most valued asset is its team of dedicated Board members, employees and volunteers. It is through their hard work, professionalism and passion, that Career Trek’s brand is one associated with high-quality programming. Current curriculum and up-to-date programming give our participants the opportunity to discover who they are and their educational and career goals, all while trying their hand at a multitude of occupations.

The management team is dedicated to providing continuous support to all employees. It is through the employees’ enthusiasm, Career Trek continues to deliver quality programming that helps to serve the education, career, and development needs of over 1,000 young participants across Manitoba annually.

Thanks to an environment in which our employees feel part of a dedicated and professional team, they experience first-hand the impact their daily contribution has on the lives of others.

We would also like to acknowledge the endless support of program partners, donors, funders, families and participants. This support has allowed us to see growth and reach more participants.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

A message from the ACTING CEO:

2017 - 2018 Annual Report | Page 3Page 2 | 2017 - 2018 Annual Report

2017-18 has been a year of flux for both the Staff and the Board of Directors of Career Trek, one that has been taken in stride by staff and board alike and in turn truly showcasing the passion the staff of Career Trek share. Two senior staff members resigned - Darrell Cole, Founder and CEO of Career Trek, left at the end of May and Meghan Lavallee, Vice President of Strategic Development, finished in early September. Both Darrell and Meghan left Career Trek to pursue other opportunities to continue their “Career Trek.”

The theme of the 2018 AGM is The People & The Passion. The Board of Directors wants to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful staff of Career Trek. Through the incredible efforts of everyone on the Career Trek team, this year of flux has been relatively smooth. The staff kept the lines of communication open and continuously stepped up to ensure that the programs of Career Trek remain as high-caliber as they are known to be. The entire Career Trek team is to be commended and celebrated for their resilience, enthusiasm and flexibility. Thank you all for your service, you have made the Board of Directors very proud!

Earlier this year, the Board of Directors worked with the Senior Staff to develop a three year (2018-2021) Strategic Plan for Career Trek. The strategic priorities identified will assist Career Trek as it continues on the journey of becoming a career development organization of excellence which helps youth aspire to educational and career successes.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would also like to express our sincere thanks to the Government of Manitoba for their ongoing support of Career Trek and its programs. The Board of Directors and the Staff are delighted that we can continue to work together to ensure Manitoba is a province “where all citizens are able to realize their full educational and career potential.” We, the Staff and Board of Career Trek, will do our best to ensure a stronger, more prosperous Manitoba as we continue to “exceed expectations.”

Barbara Bowen, Chair, Board of Directors

A message from the BOARD CHAIR:

“After migrating to Canada, at age 9, my son had to adjust and immerse himself to this new unfamiliar school system. The unfamiliarity caused him to doubt himself and he lost interest and enthusiasm towards school. But after attending and winning the Career Trekker award, he regained his confidence. It was a big help indeed!” - Faheem, Parent of a Participant

“This became more than just a job, its become a life changer. This has shown me that education is where I want to go but first I must further my own in graduate school so I can expertly educate others. It brought back a passion in my life that I had thought I’d been missing. I can honestly say that for once I was excited to get up early in the morning for a job! These kids made my days brighter.

After getting through my first lesson with my anxiety I realized that my Saturdays with these kids became my solace and I was less anxious ad worried after my time with them. They were able to keep me laughing and enjoying my day without allowing fear back in.

They taught me as I taught them. It has become one of the best memories in my life.”- Sara, Part-time staff

Stories from the Program

2017 - 2018 Annual Report | Page 5Page 4 | 2017 - 2018 Annual Report

“I’m taking this [Aerospace at Red River College] course because quite a while ago when I was fourteen I completed a program called Career Trek that let you experience what careers were like so you can choose one suited to you.

I always liked hands on mechanical jobs and aerospace was the only thing that came close to that so I went for it and ended up really enjoying it. While I was in high school I enrolled myself into Arts and Technology Centre and completed their automotive technology program. I thought cars would be the next best thing to airplanes.”- Tasha, Former Career Trek participant

“I would like to thank you for providing my daughter with a life changing experience and enlightening her of various life opportunities. Each session she attended brought home a different dynamic young lady. Her self confidence blossomed. She began to have an opinion and grew self awareness of what she also did not want to do or have interest in.” - Doug, Parent of a Participant

“I was recently reminiscing with friends about our experiences as 10 year-old kids at Career Trek (over 15years ago).

Career Trek had a very strong impression on me as a child, and I consider the whole experience as a defining moment in motivating me to do well in school and attend university.

Now that I’ve gotten my undergrad, experienced some success in my chosen field (International Finance & Developmental Economics), and enrolled in my Masters, I am curious if there are ways that I can give back to the Career Trek organization.” - Nathan, Former Career Trek Participant

“I wanted to take this time to acknowledge the hard work and dedication in making Career Trek happen. I’m very thankful I’ve had the opportunity to be in this wonderful program. It has built a strong foundation for me and has lead me in the right direction towards my career. You have been a wonderful supporter along the way.

If it wasn’t for Career Trek, things would be different. I couldn’t thank you enough for all the work Career Trek does, and continue to do.” - Celine, Former Career Trek Participant

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORTTo the Board of Directors Career Trek Inc.

I have audited the accompanying financial statements of the Career Trek Inc., which comprise the statement of financial position as at May 31, 2018, the statements of operations and cash flows for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s Responsibility My responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on my audit. I conducted my audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that I comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.

I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

Opinion In my opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Career Trek Inc. as at May 31. 2018 and the results of its operations and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations.
