Fence isa stepto parkCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
After two years of requesting a fence be-tween Cox Crescent and Turfhall Road,Mountview residents have been happy
to hear it will finally materialise. The good news was announced at a meet-
ing on Tuesday evening between residents, the Mountview Resident’s Association andthe Mountview Neighbourhood Watch.
Ward councillor Magedien Davids, who al-so attended the meeting, said that R500 000– of which R200 000 comes from the ward al-location budget – has been made availablefor the enclosure that will run along Turfhall
Road.People’s Post previously reported on resi-
dents’ frustration about the open field foundon the corner of Cox Crescent and BelmoreAvenue.
Rosdien Desai, chairperson of the Mount-view Residents’ Association, said they werehappy about the positive outcome.
“Prior to this meeting we met with thecouncillor who explained that he had takenthe matter straight to the mayor, whichwould ensure the enclosure. We are happyDavids went the extra mile with our re-quest,” Desai said.
Davids explained that the first phase of thedevelopment of the open space, which would
eventually be a park, was set to be completedbefore the end of this year after receiving thego ahead from his association.
“We had requested for the development ofthe open space due to the amount of crimeand criminals using the open space as a geta-way avenue. We are really happy that this43-year-old community will finally have aspace where children can play,” Desai said.
He added that although the entire projectwould not be completed by the end of thisyear, “it is a step in the right direction”.
“At first we had nothing and it was a battlegetting us this far, to at least have surety thata fence will be erected to ensure our resi-dents’ safety. They finally heeded our re-
quest and it is way better than sitting withnothing,” Desai added.
Davids explained that the fence would beerected 2.5m from the road.
He further added the expenses for thisfence came from the capital budget and thecost of the proposed park would come fromthe ward allocation budget.
Desai added that although there would bea new space for children to play, “residentsmust also be sure to take ownership of thenew space”.
“This is truly an investment for our area,”Desai said.V What are your thoughts? Email your views [email protected].
The field running between Cox Crescent,Armstrong Crescent and Peddie Avenue inMountview will soon be fenced off afterresidents called for it due to crime.

Next year’s Cape TownBigWalk promisesto be bigger, better and more inclusive
of the greater Cape Town community. The annual outdoor event’s new title and
logo were launched at the Sports Science In-stitute onWednesday last week to introducethe reformed Sunfoil Cape Town Big Walkpresented by Spur.In what has become an iconic Cape Town
event, the 15-year tradition will take placein Green Point on 28 February.TheBigWalk has a long-standing commit-
ment to fundraising in support of charity or-ganisations.When thewalkwas established in 2000, its
primary objective was to raise funds for theRed Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospi-tal and the Islamic Library. With the unveiling of the newbrand, orga-
nisers said there was an opportunity to wid-en the capacity of the fundraising aspectwhich led to the establishment of the CapeTown Big Walk Foundation.
Year-long programmeUnder a new three-tier structure, funding
will be channelled towards existing benefi-ciaries but also other new projects and char-ity organisations aligned with the BigWalk’s support pillars of education, fitnessand health.A programme of activities will be orga-
nised throughout the year, including bookcollection drives, a focus on healthy eatingand outdoor fitness activities.“The rebranding reflects the history and
evolution of the Big Walk, and its vision tobecome one of the largest events on theMother City’s social calendar,” saidmarket-ing manager Parveen Banderker. The event has two distances – a 5km route
and the more popular 10km route. Startingon the forecourt of the Cape Town stadium, the scenic walk makes its way along the SeaPoint Promenade and finishes inside theGreen Point track.“Cape Town is a global destination and a
wonderfully diverse metropolis. It’s a placepeople want to live, work and visit. We feltthat there was a natural fit between ourwalk and the Cape Town brand, and goingforward, the Cape Town Big Walk will an-chor itself as one of the city’s truly iconicevents,” said Banderker.
Elias Parker, the event’s director, said theBig Walk had become a social and culturalinstitution in its own right.“We’ve always been very proud of the fact
that our Big Walk is inclusive, for everyonein the community. With the exciting newchanges, we are confident that our eventwill continue to grow,” said Parker.V For more information on the Sunfoil Cape Town BigWalk presented by Spur call 021 637 1607 or visitwww.capetownbigwalk.com. The City of Cape Town’s health directorateis preparing for the anticipated increase inthe number of diarrhoea cases – particular-ly in children under the age of five who aremost vulnerable to the disease. The “season” of increased diarrhoea cas-
es is betweenNovember andMay each year. The directorate has a well-developed plan
which is aimed at prevention, early identifi-cation of diarrhoea with dehydration andfast-tracking of cases that require hospitaladmission.“While diarrhoea is a common ailment, it
is important to watch for signs of the dehy-dration associated with it, especially inyoung children, as dehydration can be fatalunless promptly corrected. The aim of thetraining sessionswith traditional healers isto facilitate adialoguewhichwill ultimatelyensure prompt referral of diarrheal cases toclinics. I am very enthusiastic about this in-itiative which empowers traditional heal-ers with the correct information to assist
with the proper treatment,” says SiyabulelaMamkeli, mayoral committee member forhealth.Environmental health practitioners also
visit informal settlements on aweekly basisto monitor potential health hazards in theliving environment and to educate resi-dents on measures to reduce the spread ofdiarrhoea by minimising oral-faecal expo-sure.It has been found that the simple activity
of frequent hand-washingwith soap andwa-ter is highly effective in preventing thespread of diarrhoea as well as respiratoryinfections.“Children with diarrhoea should not be
made to wait at clinics. They need to reportat reception and be fast-tracked for treat-ment immediately. I appeal to parents andcaregivers to seek medical attention fortheir children immediately should theypresent with any of these symptoms, be-cause delays in accessing care can be fatal,”
adds Mamkeli.Symptoms of dehydration in children in-
clude: passing little urine, a dry mouth, adry tongue and lips, fewer tears when cry-ing, sunken eyes, weakness and being irri-table or lethargic.Health officials also make an extra effort
to engage with traditional healers to updatethem and bring them on board with earlyinterventions. This is the case in the Mitch-ell’s Plain,KlipfonteinandKhayelitsha sub-districts.City health officials have been engaging
with traditional healers in these areas byhosting training sessions. Since the start ofthe season, a total of 38 traditional healershave been trained in the Mitchell’s Plainand Klipfontein subdistricts, with engage-ments in Khayelitsha set to start soon.During the last season, 25 602 diarrhoea
cases were recorded at public healthcare fa-cilities across the city. Just under 2% ofthese patients had severe dehydration.

Crimes upduring the dayCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
A new trend has been noticed the pastfew months – a spate of crimes in the
Lansdowne policing precinct during theday, especially on weekdays. This was confirmed by Rafique Fof-
lonker, chairperson of the CommunityPolice Forum (CPF), at a meeting lastweek Tuesday. Foflonker added that thistrend “is even more difficult to monitorefficiently”.“This is because people are at work
during the day. Criminals have becomemorebrazen, but if residents canbemoreinvolved and lend support to their neigh-bourhood watches, we will see a changein these trends,” Foflonker said.He added the CPF had been working
well with police and neighbourhoodwatches in the area.Another issue that has reared its head
is the increase in prostitution alongLansdowne Road.“In the space of two weeks this has
been a very hot topic that needs to be ad-dressed.“However, along with police we are
looking at a way to address this as a so-cial crime. We do not look at prostitutesas bad people, but we must formulate aplan going forward to assist these peoplepractising prostitution in our area. Weare asking for the support and guidanceof any organisation or individuals whohave experience in addressing thesekinds of issues so wemay help them,” hesaid.Foflonker said other noteworthy
crimes in the area included altercations
that turned fatal at two popular night-clubs in the Ottery industrial area.“We closed down two nightclubs in the
Ottery industrial area that are notoriousfor underage drinking and crime con-cerns. In the industrial area, four mur-ders took place and it all occurred at thenight clubs,” he said.Foflonker pleaded with residents to
help the CPF, police and neighbourhoodwatches in reporting issues, especially atnight clubs.“We have embarked on joint opera-
tions and they have been successful. However, we are asking residents to re-port if they witness underage drinking. The more complaints received, the bet-ter,” he said.Foflonker added that in light of the 16
Days of Activism campaign, residentsshould be aware that the crime issueswere not the only issues that received at-tention from the police and neighbour-hood watches.“We also attend to domestic issues in
our area. People should not be afraid toreach out to these structures, especiallythe victim support room at the Lans-downe police station for assistance andsupport.”He adds that bullying at schools in the
area had also become a major concern.“We had an incident where an 18-year-
old boy bullied a 16-year-old peer at hisschool. To get back at the bully, the 16-year-old boy and a friend stabbed the 18-year-old bully. Both 16-year-old boyswhotook revenge were apprehended,” hesaid.Foflonker encouraged parents “to
keep [their children] close”.

A clean-up at Lansdowne train station hasbeen well-received by residents. The clean-up onMonday last weekwas ar-
ranged byNoel Crowie, newly-elected chair-person of the Kenwyn Ratepayers’ Associa-tion, and ward councillor Anthea Green to-gether with law enforcement and the anti-land invasion unit. The initiativewas spurredonafterCrowie
raised his concern about illegal structuresbuilt around the station attracting vagrants. One resident and regular commuter, Aud-
rey Friedland, says: “I am very happy that
they did something about the state aroundthe station. It looked very untidy, but nowit looks much better.”It ensures that residents and commuters
“are no longer intimidated by the over-whelming environment”.“Usually when one came here you walked
into someone’s home basically, with va-grants living around here. Also, you did notknow who actually lived here or not. Faceschanged often,” she adds.“People were often robbed here near the
station and you couldn’t differentiate if theyactually lived near or around the station incase you needed to make a case at the policestation,” she says.
But with the clearer space, she says, peo-ple will be able to be more vigilant now.“With no structures up you know people
are not supposed to live around or sleepthere. We were also told to call the anti-landinvasion unit if we do see people starting toshack up there again. I just hope the commu-nity takes responsibility this timearoundbycaring for the space and not allowing unsa-voury characters to hang around and harassresidents and commuters,” Friedland says.Crowie says they are trying to keep the
place clear.“Wehavebeengettingassistance from law
enforcement, the anti-land invasion unitand social development. We have found,
however, that these people will move backto the area around the station,” he says.“We want to assist with alternatives.
These are people who need our help at theend of the day,” he says.Crowie adds that they have submitted a
proposal to Green for a park-and-ride facili-ty at the station that will be fenced off.“This has already been forwarded to her
andshehas respondedbyescalating themat-ter. We are looking at some confirmationwhen they get back from recess but for nowwe are really happy with what has alreadybeen done,” he says.V What are your thoughts? Send you views via emailto [email protected].

The False Bay Nature Reserve is receiv-ing help from a new specialised conser-
vation team.Five eland have been introduced to the
Rondevlei section of the Reserve to controlgrowth of dominant plant species and im-prove biodiversity. Some species have become overgrown,
which impacts on the vulnerable endemicflora and fauna.Although it is unclear exactly when the
last eland was hunted from the Cape Flats,it is estimated the antelopehavenot roamedhere for as much as 200 years.Eland are present in the Cape Peninsula
at Cape Point, but until now have been ab-sent from the Cape Flats, as most of the re-maining natural areas are too small or havecomplex social problems that make the re-introduction of eland impossible. The three-year pilot project, a partner-
ship between the Cape Town Environmen-tal Education Trust and the City of CapeTown, aims to replicate the eland’s histori-cal natural migration patterns, which willalso play a vital role in the conservation ofspecies and ecosystems.Twomale and three female elandwere do-
nated from the Elandsberg Nature Reservein Wellington. The adolescent antelope arebeing trained to work with herdsmen, so-called eland monitors. The young bucks are already starting to
show their personality, says projectmanag-er Petro Botha. One of the female eland, Uniqua Khan, is
soft and loving and was the first to respondto training.“She’ll even come up to you and lick your
neck,” she says.Gibbs, one of the males, has taken on the
role of the dominant male and is challeng-ing and cheeky, while the other male, Mike– who was initially resistant to his newhome and training – has developed a lovefor treats. In the four weeks since theymoved to the
nature reserve, the group has displayed re-markable social bonding, Botha says.“When we released them into the field
they came back covered in ticks. But theynowhave none. Those they couldn’t removefrom themselves the others removed forthem.”The project is proving to have further
reach than just controllingvegetation in theFalse Bay Reserve. If the project is successful, the eland will
be moved between the nature reserves andareas in Cape Town, mimicking natural mi-gration patterns. They will remain at eachsite for a fewmonths to browse, beforemov-ing on to the next site, which will allow thenatural patterns that shaped and sustainedplants to be restored. In addition, cameras have been set up
around the reserve to monitor the project. These cameras have recorded previouslyunknown caracal in the reserve as well asthe resident hippos.Once the eland have been conditioned,
they will be released in a small area of thereserve to test the effectiveness on over-grown vegetation, before they are given therun of the reserve, Botha says.“It’s been exciting to see how the animals
react. We know what we want to achieve, but they are really the team players thatmake it happen,” she says.V The eland’s growth and progress can be followedby visiting the Gantouw Project page on Facebook.

Ahmed Kathrada.A name firmly etched into the fabric
of South Africa’s rich history. Fittingly, itwas Kathrada who had an honour bestowedupon him by the City of Cape Town whichhas only been awarded to five others beforehim.Richard van der Ross, Nelson Mandela,
DesmondTutu aswell as Barack andMiche-lle Obama have all been recipients of theFreedom of the City, an honour for peopleheld in the highest esteem.A reluctant occupant of the City during
his 26-year imprisonment on Robben Islandand Pollsmoor for his role in the struggleagainst apartheid, Kathrada has calledCape Townhis home voluntarily for the bet-ter part of the last 30 years since his releasein 1989.In a ceremony held at the Cape Town City
Hall on Thursday last week, mayor Patriciade Lille honoured “Uncle Kathy”, as he isaffectionately known, for his contributionto South African society as a whole, recog-nising the sacrifices he has made since theage of 17.“The most powerful legacies don’t live in
things we can see or touch. They live in theway people think and understand. This isUncle Kathy’s legacy to us,” said De Lille.“He has helped us frame how we think
about ourselves and our country. He hashelpedus perceive and interpret ournation-al discourse in terms of reconciliation in-stead of racial barriers and the weight ofthose barriers lies heavily indeed.”As Kathrada approached the podium to
deliver his reception speech, the ceremonyattendees rose to honour the struggle heroby chanting his name in unison. The Schweizer-Reneke-born Kathrada
dedicated his award to those whom hethinks, had they been alive, would havebeen more worthy recipients than him –most notably Dulcie September, Ashley
Kriel and Anton Fransch.Kathrada also shared the lighter mo-
ments of his time as the chairperson of theRobben Island council, remarking that thelate Ismail Meer remarked: “We struggledto get Kathy out of Robben Island; nowwhenever I phone Kathy, I am told that heis on Robben Island. We succeeded in get-ting him out of Robben Island, but we havefailed in getting Robben Island out of him.”Kathrada accompanied more than 300
groups to thememorial, which he suggestedshould be listed officially as one of CapeTown’s iconic destinations to visit.“Robben Island is one of the sites in the
freedom struggle, not the only one and notby any means the most important one. Wewere in jail and jail is difficult, but at leastwe were safe from the police. Our comradesoutside of jail were not safe. Imentioned the
people and I mention them again – AshleyKriel, Anton Fransch, Dulcie Septemberand Chris Hani; they were not safe, theywere killed while we were protected.”Kathrada reminded the youth not to take
the freedom, that so many sacrificed theirlives for, for granted.“I can only wish, because I cannot in-
struct, I can onlywish that the young peoplewill bear inmind that the freedom that theyenjoy today, that all the avenues that wereclosed before under apartheid are open to-day. Our wish is that they will rememberthat freedom did not fall from heaven. Free-domwas fought for. Freedomwas sacrificedfor.Manypeople lost their lives. TheSowetouprising . . . hundreds lost their lives, sothey have a responsibility to remember thatfreedom that the young people are enjoying, was sacrificed for.”
High honour for Kathrada

It’s time for lunch and the row of highchairs is filled with smiling, expectant fa-
ces. Some are singing “Old MacDonald”,while one mischievous tyke plays fetchwith a caregiver, who bends down to re-trieve the ball every time it’s thrown to thefloor.A recognisable scene on any normal day
at any normal crèche. But this is NazarethHouse and these little bodies already carrymore emotional and physical scars thanmost people will suffer in a lifetime. The stories of many of these children’s
lives before they arrived at the sanctuaryof Nazareth House are filled with horrorsof neglect, sexual, emotional and physicalabuse, malnourishment and HIV.A typical scenario is the tale of young Si-
pho (a pseudonym) who came to NazarethHouse aged 1, having spent most of his lifein hospital – a victim of parental drug abuseand neglect.Sipho was hospitalised when he was just
six months old and remained there for al-most a year before the court ordered he beplaced at Nazareth House, which providesa home to abused, abandoned, terminally illand severely disabled children.During an early session on the lawn be-
neath the palm trees, the occupational ther-apist (OT) noticed Sipho’s toes curl up – likehe was walking on grass for the first time.A year down the line and he has under-
gone an incredible transformation. Nazar-eth House has ensured Sipho gets his dailymedication and makes visits to the clinic.Having reached developmental mile-
stones and his healthcare needs well man-aged, the court ruled Sipho was ready to beplaced in foster care and OT Ashleigh van
Zyl was on hand to introduce Sipho to hisnew family. Social workers will continue tomonitor his progress.“We are so proud of Sipho,” says Werner
Laubscher, CEO of Nazareth House. “Whilewe are sad to say goodbye to this gentle soul,we are so pleased to have been able to carefor him and be a part of seeing him growand develop.”Nazareth House has to raise R7.5m a year
to fund its operations in Cape Town (thereare also homes in KwaZulu-Natal, Gautengand Zimbabwe). Consider that 10 000 nap-pies lasts just a month and a half, and costR120 000 per year to purchase and to removethe used nappies R90 000 per year“If we don’t receive donations we can’t
function. It’s that simple,” says Laubscher.Nazareth House has entered the age of
digital fundraising this November and De-cember.The 94 Children & You campaign runs
across social media, email, Google displaynetwork andSMS, and targets SouthAfrica,Canada and Europe. It includes a new web-site, www.94children.co.za, showcasing thework Nazareth House does for the 94 chil-dren in its care. When it comes to making a difference it’s
the caregivers, singing to the little ones atplay on lush lawns under the protectiveshade of Nazareth House’s iconic palmtrees, who hold the key to a return to a nor-mal life.“I love them,” says Nancy, a caregiver. It’s a simple phrase, but possesses the
power to transform a life.V To bring light to abandoned, abused and neglectedchildren donate online at www.94children.co.za orSMS “94” to 40307 to donate R20.

A superb display of softball skills waswitnessed at Turfhall stadium in Ath-lone onSaturdaywhenFalcons tookon
Glenthorn A’s in a top of the log clash.Falcons were left defeated as Glenthorn
A’s clutched onto the dying minutes of thematch to retain their lead on the log.
The tightly contested match started offwith a bang as Glenthorn A’s worked com-fortably to keepFalcons scoreless in the firstframe.
This gave the Athlone-based side full ad-vantage to add more pressure to the Falconsteam early in the match when they scoredfour runs first time around at bat. In the sec-ond frameFalcons remained scorelesswhileGlenthorn A’s added another run to thescoreboard.
A strategic move gave Falcons hope whentheir coachAndreAlexander brought onNa-talie Abrahams to relieve Nicky Jones, whopitched two frames.
Abrahams stepped onto the pitcher’smound in the third frame, closing it in stylewith a double play when she took a divingcatch and nailed the runner at first base, leaving Glenthorn A’s scoreless.
The fourth frame left both teams scorelessonce again, with Falcons unable to advancetheir runners on base.
It was only in the fifth frame that Falconsmanaged to score their first two runs. Theycontinued to put up a defensive fight in thesixth frame, keeping the score at 5-2.
Glenthorn A’s kept composure in the sev-enth framewhen their opponents once againtried to snatch victory.
With two runners on base and two outs,Bettina Phillips, whowas one of the best bat-ters for Falcons, came up to bat but was putout by Astrid van Kesteren, confirming thewin for her team.
The score remained 5-2.In thematchLaurenMulderpitched seven
frames for Glenthorn, facing 31 batters, giv-ing off seven hits, four base on balls whilenotching up four strikeouts.

Yankees push A’s all the waySEAN CAMPBELL
AthloneA’smoved to joint top spot of theBAWPMajor League after overcomingWestridge Yankees on Saturday and
Bellville Tygers on Sunday in this week-end’s double-header round of fixtures.Tyrone Brandt and Lloyd Stevens shared
the pitching duties and restrictedWestridgeto a single run in the third innings to set upAthlone’s 2-1 win at Stephen Reagan sportgrounds in Mitchell’s Plain.Westridge will rue their missed opportu-
nities as they left a total of 10 runners strand-ed on the base, five of them in the first twoinnings compared to Athlone’s six in total.
Westridge amassed six hits off Brandt in5.2 innings and none off Stevens in his 3.1innings. Athlone recorded five hits fromDean Martin in five innings and four offJayson Ripepi in his three innings.Westridge’s best hitterwasWesleyRushin
(3 for 4) while RiyaadMoosa (3-4) andDillianDaniels (2-4) were Athlone’s best hitters.Moosa and Daniels recorded RBI each forAthlone. Both Moosa and Daniels were also guilty
of some poor base-running options duringthe game.Westridge recorded two double plays to
Athlone’s one.
A’s bullpen shut out BellvilleThe combined effort of ex-pro baller Carl
Michaels (six innings), Stevens (two in-nings) and rookie LeeMarks (one inning) re-stricted Bellville to six hits and a single baseon ball without conceding a run inAthlone’s3-0 victory on Sunday.Athlone’s three runs were scored in the
crucial seventh innings on two hits, 1 BB,1HBP and a sacrifice fly fromDarrenWedel.Coach Lester Smith made an inspired
changewhen he brought on stalwart TyroneBrandt to pinch hit for the youngster Ma-thew Diedericks. Brandt came up with agame-winning hit to centrefield to scorebrothers Riyaad and Faizel Moosa who goton base through a hit and HBP respectively. It was, however, the Bellville bullpen that
faltered. Proballer Callan Pearce gave thema good start (5 inn, 2 hits and 9 strikeouts)with Shannon Eckermans doing a 1 inningrelief before the crucial seventh innings.Karl Rohm started the seventh, but onlyfaced three batters (1BB, 1H and a HBP) be-
foreAnthonyPhillips (2 Innand3H) finishedthe game.Darren Wedel (2 for 2, 1 sacrifice fly and
1 RBI) and Brandt (1 for 1 with 2 RBIs) wereAthlone’s best hitters. Kyle Ettish (2 for 3)and Jonathan Phillips (1 for 2) did best forBellville.
