LOTUS RIVER
‘Get serious’CHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Not even the presence of police vehiclesis successful in deterrent enough for abrazen thief in Lotus River.
According to reports fromCarolaWay res-idents, the man stole a letter box while acrime meeting was underway. The meeting was held by the Carola Way
Neighbourhood Watch at the home of watchchairperson Neil Jacobus. The meeting, which addressed a spike in
crime in recent months, was attended bymore than 50 residents.Ward councillor Leslie Isaacs, representa-
tives from Law Enforcement and GrassyPark police were also present.Just before 22:00, Jacobus’ daughter, who
has asked not to be named, looked throughthe living room blinds and saw an unknownman pulling at the letter box.“I don’t know what made me leave my
room and get up to go to the lounge windowand look outside. When I got to the windowI saw somebody hunched over on our lawnand he was yanking at our letter box,” sheexplains.Jacobus immediately notified police, but
when they got outside, the thief had disap-peared.“As you can see, this is evident of the epi-
demic we sit with in this area of late. We arenot even safe with police vehicles parkedoutside our homes anymore. The perpetra-tors have no respect,” he says.During the meeting other crime-related
matters were raised and residents posedtough questions to officials. One resident, who asked not to be named,
explained she had become a victim on threeoccasions since moving to Lotus River. In the first incident, she was robbed while
walkinghome fromthepetrol station just be-fore 22:00.As she made her way into the residential
area, she noticed two men following her.“I looked back and they were a fewmetres
behind me. I reckoned if I just made it to thecorner I could run home but when I got tothe corner they had already caught up tome.”She says the two men held her at gun- and
knifepoint as they demanded cash.“They started searchingme. Iwas touched
inappropriately as they looked all over formoney and they took my phone. They eventook my gatsby I bought for supper thatevening.”That evening, the samemenallegedly held
up her sons and attempted to rob them.How-ever, they did not have any valuables intheir possession. “This scares me becausemy boys could have died,” she says. She claims to have reported the matter to
Grassy Park police, but “was told not tomake a case”.“They told me straight to not make a case
as the docketswould gomissing anyway andnothing would come of it. I was advised tofill out some other form.”Sector Commander Warrant Officer God-
frey Arendse, who attended the meeting onbehalf of Grassy Park station commanderColonel FanaDlamini, said residents shouldnote the name of the officer who attends thecomplaint. “It is very difficult to follow upwhen one doesn’t know who to take to taskin such instances,” Arendse explained. Those present also questioned if Dlamini
was “serious about crime as he was in-formed weeks prior to the meeting and hecancelled at the last minute”.“We need our police to take responsibility
for crime. And if this is the attitude we aremet with, it makes our task so much moredifficult,” Jacobus stressed.Attempts to gain comment from Dlamini
were unsuccessful at the time of going toprint.V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your thoughts to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

HOT SUMMER GROOVE
Something fancy headsto GrandWest ArenaGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
When the beat at the Hot Summer Groove gets going atthe GrandWest Arena on Saturday 6 December, notmany will realise that some of the stars featured have
a history that binds them since childhood.Alistair Izobell, Ramaine Barreiro, Loukmaan and Emo Ad-
ams are no strangers to the stage in South Africa. Their stories
all have their roots in Mitchell’s Plain some time in the 1980swith a drama group called Kinders vannie Ses (Children of Dis-trict Six). Barreiro remembers those times with fondness, espe-cially thememory of the four of them forming Nu Fancy. “Wow!What anexciting time for four laaities from the ‘Plain,” she says, looking at a photo of the four of them at the time.
“I think I was about 12 – basically a hundred years ago! Wewere all part of a local drama group called Kinders vannie Ses[they are still running today]. Fromwhat I remember, the Rock-ets called us in to record and before we knew it we were touringwith them.”
Emowas only 12, Alistair was 14 and Loukmaan 15. “We weretravelling all over South Africa, Namibia, little halls in everydorpie and we used to rock Club Fame in Elsies River. I thinkthose times convinced us that it was what we wanted to do forthe rest of our lives – and we’ve never looked back.”
Ramaine also reflects that being part of this group gave thema good foundation in the entertainment industry. “We weretaught the old school way.Work hard and you’ll get what’s com-ing to you. Looking at where we all are is proof of that.”
Ramaine was living out of town for a few years but relocatedback home about a year ago, starting her ownmanagement andproduction company. She takes another look at the photo withthose young faces smiling at her, and remembers that none ofit would have been possible without some fantastic support.
“We all had parents who supported what we do, we alwayshad people around us who had already been doing this for yearsto learn from and we had each other,” she says fondly.
Getting back to 2014, she says she is very excited to be partof the show in December. While it might not be a reunion ofthe childhood group, Ramaine is adamant that the audience canexpect to see some of the best entertainment the Western Capehas to offer.
Along with these four, People’s Post and sister publicationTy-gerBurger have secured a killer line-up for the first-ever HotSummer Groove. Joining them will be the popular all-femaletrio Blackbyrd and the backing band Take Note.
An added bonus is that we will be giving away a car at theshow. Your ticket serves as your entry. Up for grabs is a FAWV2 1.3 worth R100 000. Since it’s the season of giving, we’ll alsobe donating R5 of each ticket to the Trauma Centre in Zonneblo-em. Tickets for the Hot Summer Groove cost from R130 and areavailable from Computicket.

PARKWOOD
Dump site plan rubbishedCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
A proposal for a waste drop-off facilityon Prince George Drive has sparkedthe ire of Parkwood residents.
The proposal by the City of Cape Town forthe new facility is due to the closure of twoother sites at Ladies’ Mile and Tygerdal. An application for a Waste Management
Licence has been lodgedwith the provincialDepartment of Environmental Affairs andDevelopment Planning for a City-ownedproperty situated on the corner of PrinceGeorge Drive and De Waal Road. The City has also appointed Royal
HaskoningDHVenvironmental consultantsto oversee the application.According to the background document
from the consultants, the two sites havereached the end of their “functional life”and will need to be closed. In addition due to the increase in waste
generated, this site is needed.Royal HaskoningDHV has also released
the draft Basic Assessment Report (BAR)and residents have until today (Tuesday 4November) to make their comments on thereport.Angry residents claim they were first in-
formed about the proposal in an article inPeople’s Post (“Rubbish days numbered”, 21October) which outline the plans for erf75562.PastorPaul Phillips, chairperson ofVoice
of Parkwood, took to Facebook to raise hisconcerns and said the facility is “an un-healthy idea”.At a recentmeeting inParkwood, Phillips
said officials were not giving solutions andtheir “covers fell off”.
He raised concerns about the close prox-imity of the proposed facility to Klip RoadCemetery.“The rubbish site and cemeterywill share
the same gate. [The facility will be] rightnext to theMuslimburial ground. They saidit would not affect us and we said ‘no’,” hesays.Phillips also alleges ward councillor Mel-
anie Arendse and the Rondevlei Subcouncildid not know about the proposal.“It will come to light sooner than later
whoever is lying and whoever is speakingthe truth. When a councillor declines to at-tend ameetingwith the companywho playsa major role, you can make your own as-sumptions,” Phillips fumes. When approached for comment Arendse
referred People’s Post to Ward 72 councillorJan Burger. She said a motion for the pro-posed facility was made by him.Burger, however, says this is incorrect. He explains he submitted a motion to
curb illegal dumping a few years ago andthe City then decided to go ahead with thesite in 10th Avenue, Retreat.Phillips says the process is “flawed” and
nearby institutions were not consulted.“It’s unfair,” he says.“There is no respect for Parkwood people
and [it is] disrespectful to all of the affectedparties.”On Sunday 2 November residents held a
placard demonstration to object to the pro-posed plans. Many have also taken to the Facebook
page titled Against Gang Violence in Park-wood to vent their anger.According to the report the site is zoned
as public open space and will have to be re-zoned if the application is approved.
V The report is available at Southfield Library and canalso be viewed by visiting www.rhdhv.co.za. PhoneRafeeqah Kamish on (021) 936 7657 or [email protected] for more information.

LIQUOR TRADING
Shebeen boss eyes more timeCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
An application for extended trad-ing hours at a shebeen onStrandfontein Road has been
placed on hold due to pending courtcases.Rondevlei Subcouncil recently
ruled that a re-application extendedtrading hours would have to be sub-mitted for Boy’s Inn shebeen.Owner Clarence Williams submit-
ted his application during April thisyear for extended trading hours fromMondays to Saturdays between 09:00and 18:00.Williams has since applied for re-
zoning of his business, which is situ-ated on Strandfontein Road, from sin-gle-residential to business.“I have applied for re-zoning of my
business as I want it to be fully busi-ness-zoned. My business is being runfrom a business hub and that’s whyI applied for this zoning,” he says.Williams says he applied for the
zoning as his business needs to makemore money.“My business has becomemymain
source of income as I am the solebreadwinner of my family. I have al-ways been compliant and alwaysstrived to run my business accordingto the Liquor Act,” he says.Williams further motivated in his
application that residents who fre-quent his business work outside ofthe area and they get home late.“Most ofmycustomersare fromthe
working class and they get home late
sometimes. By the time they returnhome,my trading hours are expired.”Williams adds his business is situ-
ated far fromother local shebeens andthe distance between the outlets posesa safety risk and inconvenience tocustomers.“If the application for extended
trading hours is approved it will beconvenient for my customers. Theythen won’t have to travel so far,” hesays. The current court cases for re-zon-
ing, according toWilliams, have beenconcluded. “I was in court threeweeks ago and now all I have to do iswait. I just hope the re-zoning is ap-proved,” he adds.Ward councillor Leslie Isaacs voted
that the application for the extensionof trading hours be postponed untilthe court cases involving Williamsare concluded. “According to the in-formation I have, Williams has to ap-pear in court today (Tuesday 4 No-vember). Our subcouncil will thenhave a special follow-up meeting onFriday 7 November,” Isaacs says.“Wewill dealwith this issue specifi-
cally and a few more items at thismeeting.”Isaacs urges the community to be-
comeapart of thepublic participationprocess when it comes to extension ofliquor trading licenses.“Our residents need to start taking
responsibility for their communities. They should stay informed because atthe end of the day, these types of is-sues affect them the most,” Isaacssays.

clashed outside court after one gangmember stabbed a man from the oppos-ing gang. Booysen explains police arestill unsure why both gangs were atcourt. He says one of the gangs fled thescene in a Nissan bakkie.Wynberg police teamed upwithMetro
Police and the Flying Squad and trackedthe runaway gang members in Grassy

Teams in the top two tiers of South Afri-can football will return to action thisweek following a postponement of all
matches in memory of slain goalkeeper Sen-zo Meyiwa.
In the Premier Soccer League (PSL), AjaxCape Town will travel to Pretoria to face theUniversity of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium to-morrow (Wednesday 5 November).
The Urban Warriors, who are still in sec-ond place on the log, will be determined toimprove on their previous outing – a 4-1 de-feat at the hands of Orlando Pirates in theTelkom Knockout Cup.
Their last two encounters against Tuks inthe PSL were somewhat of a humdrum af-fair, with both matches ending in goallessstalemates in October last year and March.

will look to collect maximum points in thecapital city to stay in touch with log leadersKaizer Chiefs and remain ahead of the otherteams in the top five.
Meanwhile, FC Cape Town will be the onlyteam in action in the National First Division(NFD) tomorrow, as they travel to Richard’sBay to take on Thanda Royal Zulu at the Um-hlathuze Sports Complex.
Friday evening sees yet another Cape der-by, when second-placed Milano United tack-le Cape Town All Stars at Philippi Stadium. On Saturday 8 November, Santos FC willtake on Witbank Spurs at the Puma RugbyStadium.
