This is an area where your community PeoplesPharmacist has the most experience and expertise.Pharmacists are specialists about medication useand its safety. Take this opportunity to talk to yourPeoples Pharmacist, one-on-one, about your med-ications. You would be surprised how much youcan learn about your healthafter a chat with your PeoplesPharmacist. The Medication ReviewService is a provinciallyfunded service which givesPharmacists the opportunityto better educate their pa-tients. Peoples Pharmacistshave always reviewed yourmedications, but this providesa more formal approach. Ifyou a BC resident, with a validBC Services card and take at least five prescriptionmedications, you might be eligible for a fundedmedication review. If you don't meet these criteria, don't worry. Your Peoples Pharmacist still reviewsall of your medications. What will happen during a medication review? Well, the name defines the service per-fectly. Your Peoples Pharmacist will review all yourprescription medications, including vitamins andsupplements. Each of your medications with be re-viewed in detail. You will learn about what they

are used for, the best time to take them, any po-tential side effects and possible long term compli-cations. Depending upon your pharmacist's levelof expertise, they may also discuss possible druginduced nutrient depletion. This side effect occurswhen a prescription medication causes your body

to lose valuable vitamins orminerals. For informationabout drug-induced nutrientdepletion, read the January2015 issue of Peoples Healthmagazine. You can find allprevious issues at www.peo-plesdrugmart.com.

What should you bring toyour medication review? Nat-urally you should bring a listof all the over the counteritems and supplements that

you take. This should include vitamins and herbalpreparations. Your Peoples Pharmacist will have acomplete list of the prescription medications thatyou take. It is very helpful for your Pharmacist toknow what supplements you take on a regularbasis. Sometimes vitamins or supplements can in-teract with prescription medications or conflictwith medical conditions. Your Peoples Pharmacistcan also advise you whether these supplements areof value to you. It will to helpful to bring a list ofquestions that you might have about your med-

Constipation is when you have bowel move-ments (stools) that are hard to pass or are less oftenthan what is usual for you. Being constipatedmeans your bowel movements are difficult or hap-pen less often than normal. Most people have it atsome point in their life, and it's usually not serious.Still, you'll feel much better when your system isback to normal. Some people are overly concerned with the fre-quency of their bowel movements, because theyhave been taught that a healthy person has a bowelmovement every day. This is not true. Most peoplepass stools anywhere from 3 times a day to 3 timesa week. If your stools are soft and pass easily, youare not constipated. What causes constipation? There are many causes of constipation, including: • not drinking enough fluids • a low fibre diet • low physical activity • ignoring the urge when you have to go • stress • pregnancy • overuse of laxatives • a change in regular routine or travelling • some medications such as calcium, antacids with aluminum or calcium, antidepressants, antihistamines, narcotics, antispasmodics, diuretics, tranquilizers, some heart medications; some supplements such as iron. • health conditions such as irritable bowel

syndrome, diabetes, colorectal cancer, eating disorders, underactive thyroid, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, celiac disease, and depression.Ways to Ease and Prevent Constipation • Get some exercise every day. Try to do moderate to vigorous activity at least 2½ hours a week. It's fine to be active in blocks of 10 minutes or more throughout your day and week. • Aim to drink at least two litres of fluid per day. You will pass much of the fluid as urine but some is passed out in the gut and softens the stools. Note that alcoholic drinks can cause dehydration and may cause constipation. • Take a fibre supplement, such as Biomedic pysllium fibre, every day if needed. • Schedule time each day for a bowel move-ment. Having a daily routine may help. • Do not strain when you are having a bowel movement, its best to take your time.Eat Foods That Contain Plenty Of Fibre Fibre (roughage) is the part of plant food that isnot digested. It stays in your gut and is passed inthe stools. Fibre adds bulk and some softness to thestools. High-fibre foods include the following:• Fruit and vegetables. Try to eat at least five por-tions of a variety of fruit and vegetables daily. Oneportion is: one large fruit such as an apple, orange, banana, or a large slice of melon; OR two smaller

fruits such as plums, etc; OR one cup of small fruitssuch as strawberries, raspberries, grapes, etc.• Wholemeal or whole-wheat bread and flour.• Wholegrain breakfast cereals. A simple change ofeating a fibre rich breakfast cereal can make a bigdifference to the amount of fibre you eat each day.• Brown rice, and wholemeal pasta. Although the effects of a high-fibre diet may beseen in a few days, it may take as long as three to-four weeks. You may find that if you eat more fibre(or take fibre supplements), you may have somebloating and gas at first. This is often temporary. Asyour gut becomes used to extra fibre. If you are notused to a high-fibre diet, it is best to gradually in-crease the amount of daily fibre . What if whole-grain fiber and fruits don't helpconstipation? Then try foods that contain psyllium seed husk, bran, and methylcellulose. These natural productsincrease stool weight and have a laxative effect. Besure to drink a lot of water when taking any of theseproducts, as they can clog up the intestines and

cause constipation. Fiber must have water in orderto sweep the colon and move the stool out of yourbody. Laxatives and ConstipationBulk Formimg Bulk formimg laxatives are known as fibre supple-ments. These increase the bulk of your stools in asimilar way to fibre. They can have some effectwithin 12-24 hours but their full effect may take sev-eral days to develop. Unprocessed bran is a inexpensive fibre supple-ment. If you take bran, it is best to build up theamount gradually. Start with two teaspoons a day,and double the amount every five days until youreach about about 1-3 tablespoons per day. Other fibre supplements include ispaghula (psyl-lium), methylcellulose, sterculia, wheat dextrin, in-ulin fibre and whole linseeds (soaked in water).Stimulant Laxatives These stimulate the nerves in the large bowel (thecolon and rectum, sometimes also called the largeintestine). This then causes the muscle in the wall of

the large bowel to squeeze harder than usual. Thishelps push the stools along and out. Their effect isusually within 8-12 hours. A bedtime dose is recom-mended so you are likely to feel the urge to go tothe toilet the next morning. Laxatives are substances that can help relieve oc-casional constipation. However the long-term use of laxatives can make your body depend on them.It is best to try changes to your diet and lifestyle first. If your constipation does not get better, talk withyour health care provider. When should I see a health care provider? You should see a health care provider if: • you have been constipated for several days • there is a sudden change in your bowel movements without a change in your daily routine; • and diet changes have not helped • you have intense pain in your belly or rectum • you have blood in your stool

• you have unexplained weight loss • you have constipation that alternates with diarrhea. Increasing the fiber in your diet, daily exercising, drinking more water can often help constipation. But chronic constipation can signal a real problem. It can indicate a poorly functioning thyroid gland ordiabetes. It can be the result of Parkinson's diseaseor stroke, or a side effect of medications. In rarecases, it can signal illnesses such as colorectal canceror autoimmune disease. See a doctor if symptomslast more than two weeks or you have blood in yourstools, severe pain with bowel movements, or unex-plained weight loss.

ications or medical conditions. While it might notbe possible to answer all of your questions at onesitting, this provides a great starting point. Med-ication reviews are not only about information, they are also about building a relationship withyour Peoples Pharmacist. Another important part of the medication re-view process is to improve something Pharmacistslike the call adherence. Personally, I never liked theterm adherence. It sounds like something associ-ated with masking tape or glue. Adherence essen-tially means taking the right medication at theright time. We can all agree that taking your med-ication at the right time is important. How does aPharmacist improve adherence? This is donethrough education. If you understand your med-ical condition and the medication to treat it, youare more likely to remember to take your medica-tion. Sometimes proper adherence can lead to areduction in a medication dose. How is this possi-ble? I have seen it happen. If you are taking amedication to help reduce blood pressure, yourDoctor or Pharmacist will be monitoring yourblood pressure readings. If a specific dose of med-ication didn't cause a significant enough drop inblood pressure, then your Doctor might increasethe dose. Your Doctor assumes that this dose ofmedication, taken at consistently regular intervals, was not effective and the dose might need to beincreased. But what if you only remembered totake your medication half the times that it wasprescribed? Ask your Peoples Drug Mart Pharma-cist if there are any ways that they can help youimprove your medication adherence Part of the medication review service is provid-ing a Best Possible Medication History. Duringyour review, your Peoples Pharmacist will preparea written record of all your prescription medica-tions, vitamins and supplements. On this recordwill the reasons for use and when it is the besttime to take them. This record can make otherhealth care professional appointments easier andmore efficient. Focus On Psyllium FibreHelps Lower CholesterolStudies have shown that eating psyllium fibre canlower mildly to moderately elevated levels of choles-terol in adults when taken with a low-fat diet. Psylliumfibre is thought to stimulate the conversion of choles-terol into bile acid and then increase bile acid excre-tion. It may also decrease the intestinal absorption ofcholesterol. By lowering your cholesterol, you can dra-matically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Fibre can be divided into two major types: soluble andinsoluble. Psyllium seed husk is a soluble fibre and isthe most common dietary fibre supplement. Talk to aPeoples Pharmacist about the health benefits of natu-ral source psyllium fibre.

specialists may want to know what medicationsyou are taking. If you have to go to the hospitalfor any reason, a detailed medication list will makeyour admission far more efficient and safer. If youtravel with your medication, a written documentcould make your life easier. There are many goodreasons to have a medication list which your Peo-ples Pharmacist can prepare for you. Another reason to have a printed medication listavailable involves emergency preparedness. Whatif the power goes out for an extended period oftime? Your computerized records might not beavailable for some time. When the lights go out, paper always works. There will be more emer-gency preparedness ideas in the upcoming No-vember 2016 issue of the Peoples Healthmagazine. If you find that carrying around thispiece of paper is too cumbersome, why not takea picture of it with your smart phone? It alwayspays to be prepared. Do you find that you are regularly visiting yourDoctor for refills? It might be a good idea to visitwith your Peoples Pharmacist before your nextdoctor or specialist visit. Your Peoples Pharmacistcan check your medication records to see whichof your medications need refills. This will save bothyou and your doctor time with fewer office visits.Your community Pharmacist might also be able towrite down a few suggestions, or questions, aboutyour drug therapy for you to ask your doctor dur-ing your next appointment. There is so much more to your Peoples Pharma-cist than medications and supplements. They canbe a wealth of information about your health andways to make your life easier. A medication reviewis but one of these tools to help you take chargeof your health. The more you know about yourmedications and medical conditions, the healthieryou can be.

Henry Ford changed the world by inventing an affordablecar for the masses. You would have to be extremely presentwhen driving a Model T as power mechanisms and the automated features of today’s vehicles did not exist. Imaginethe anticipation of a sharp curve ahead. You decelerate by vigorously pumping brakes while your upper body works theturn of a manual steering wheel. Your distraction factor backin the day likely involved an animal, passenger, pedestrian, road condition or other driver. Now fast-forward to presenttime where we drive automated cars at much higher speedswithin ever increasingly complex road networks. All this com-pounded by an exponential increase in distraction factors. Is itany wonder that according to ICBC, distracted driving is second only to impaired driving when it comes to crash fatalities in BC? At the mention of distracted driving, cell phones top thelist and rightly so. They are one of the most visible contrib-utors to the problem but not the only one. Distracted drivingis defined as anything that impairs your ability to focus onthe road ahead. In today’s world of shortened attentionspans, that definition pretty much includes everything including, but not limited to, the following:1. Sound: Audible distractions consist of a noisy interior or exterior driving environment. This could involve navigating traf-fic with a raucous passenger on board or being shaken fromyour thought trance by approaching sirens. Maybe youcouldn’t hear the sirens because your music was loud enoughto distract the driver in the next lane. Passengers should be reminded to respect your need to focus. If someone demandsyour attention, pull off the road and attend to their needs ratherthan try and keep going in spite of a ruckus. (And no, turningup the music to drown them out is not a good strategy!)2. Sight: Visual distractions can be anything from a streetsign to beautiful scenery. Thankfully, GPS systems have madearriving at a new destination more of an auditory experiencerather than visual. If you are travelling new territory, find aplace to pull off the road to orient rather than chance drivingoff into the sunset and taking other vehicles with you. If hav-ing a DVD player on board for the kids is the only way you

can get them to sit quietly, make sure it does not interferewith your ability to concentrate.3. Stress: Psychological distractions are when the stress ofthe job or the fight you had with a loved one follows youinto the car and commandeers your thoughts. Or perhapsanother distracted driver just cut you off and your emotionsspill over into a pool of imaginary road rage and retaliation. When your mind is preoccupied, your ability to react isgreatly hampered.4. Physical: These distractions include eating, drinking, groom-ing, adjusting controls and pretty much everything that takesyour hand(s) off the wheel. Yes, this would include texting andtalking on your cell phone as well. While hands free devicesnegate the physical distraction factor, they are still audible andpsychological by nature. If you get a text or a call wait until youare in a safe place to pull over and deal with it. 5. Monotony and Fatigue: Bells and whistles such as cruisecontrol and advanced driver assistance systems do affordsome performance and safety benefits but they may havesome pitfalls as well. A study in France has found that thosewho used cruise control were more prone to drowsiness thanthose who do not. It boils down to the brain actually becomeless vigilant when exposed to monotonous stimuli. In BC you can be fined $167.00 and receive 3 demeritson your licence if you are caught using your phone whiledriving. Still, distracted driving is on the rise and it poses asignificant safety risk to all those who use the road. Not onlyare cyclists and pedestrians more vulnerable at the hands ofa distracted driver, they are sometimes part of the problemas well. I have seen pedestrians so engrossed in their handheld device that they have literally walked into oncomingtraffic. I have also watched cyclists wind their way in and outof traffic with a phone held up to their ear. Peoples Drug Mart BC Walks For ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular dis-ease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brainto the voluntary muscles in the body. When they fail to receive messages, the mus-cles lose strength, atrophy and die. Since the disease frequently takes its toll beforebeing positively diagnosed, many patients are debilitated before learning they haveALS. The disease wreaks a devastating effect on patients as well as their families. Peoples Drug Mart is pleased to support the The ALS Society of BC by being titlesponsor for the BC & Yukon Walks For ALS. Peoples Drug Mart and The ALS Societyof BC have partnered together for the BC Walks for ALS since 2005. Since then, the Walks for ALS in BC & Yukon has raised over $4,371,921. The ALS Society of BC raises funds for both research and to provide direct servicesand support to those currently living with ALS. Until a cure is found, the Societyprovides patient services to improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with thisdisease by offering an extensive equipment loan program, support groups, andeducational materials.
