For Christians, this is what gives life and meaning to all that you do. The Easter story shapes your pur- suits and guides the way you live. By contrast, the world lives by the narrative of death. Not that you are consumed by thoughts of death but rather that death is the ominous shadow ever hanging on the horizon. For non-believers, the brutal march toward death is what defines your pursuits and shapes the way you live. Your goal is to cheat death and get as much out of life as you can. Christians instead willingly empty their lives for others. They know that the power of death holds no sway. Gods resurrection promise teaches you a lesson that makes no sense to those living under the narra- tive of death. If you want to have life, you must embrace death as a way of life. You have to accept a path of self-sacrifice and suffering for the sake of others. Jesus said it like this, For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?(Mark 8:35-36). The Easter story teaches us to see things differently. Losing means win- ning. Giving up equals gaining. Death transforms into life. This isnt some magic formula at work. Its the power of God made evident through those who live by the Easter story. Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!(Rev 5:11-12)

H ow are you feeling this Easter Sunday?

You may have great hope and all may be well with your soul.

But maybe, even in the middle of the glorious celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, you are struggling to find joy.

Maybe you’re dealing with health issues, depression, disap-pointment. Maybe you’re afraid. Maybe you’ve really messed up. Maybe you’re heartbroken.

Contrary to what the advertising agencies, Facebook, or Pinterest may tell us, Easter isn’t about the perfect outfit. It’s not about the perfect family gathering or amazing spread of food. It’s not even about the per-fect song or sermon.

Forget about the pretty flowers and chicks and bunnies. The story of the Cross is messy. It’s full of pain and suffering, grief and loss. It includes deception, betrayal, and sin.

Isn’t that also an accurate description of our earthly life? There are days, years, seasons full of pain and suffering, grief and loss, deception, betrayal, sin.

But amidst the messy business of life, crashing through the center of the devastating story of the Cross, there is a story of Resurrection. A story of Redemption. There is Hope.

The story of the Cross and Resurrection should unnerve us. It’s not a fluffy piece of literature to hear only, but a story to join. It’s an invitation to see pain and sin and devastation up close. It’s hard and tiring and often very messy. But it’s powerful and life-giving and holy. We get to join, in all our brokenness, with the Resurrected Lord. We get to come alongside Him and proclaim His love to people who have lost Hope. We get to introduce the world to their Savior.

Whatever your circumstance, whatever you are feeling, may the peace of Christ dwell deep in your soul today. May you rest in the story of the Cross with eyes open to the beauty of the Resurrection.

May you find Hope amidst the mess.

Henderson
