Mercer, Julian Correspondent for the Daily Herald for many years writing historical

pieces about Lehi. Member of the Lehi Historical Preservation Commission for many years

and currently. Large donor to the Lehi City Historical Archives. See his writings on the

web pages. Tenth Ward Emergency Preparedness Chairman during the floods of

1982­83.

Leased the John Beck home in 1890. Lehi Dentist Purchased the property at 72 West Main in 1898 expanding Main Street

from between 100 and 200 West. The property had originally been part of the Anders Peterson homestead. The Dental Office was 18 X 20 foot size. The brickwork was done by Andrew Fjeld and Charles Ohran and were the

probable builders of the Business. He was one of the most trained dentists of the time. He advertised using gas nitrious oxide. He sold the business to Dr. Walter T. Hasler.

Merrihew, Florence D. Florence D. Merrihew was born in Illinois. When eight years old, her parents moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she

received her education in public schools; later attending the Academy of the Sacred Heart, where she studied painting, etc. having made painting and writing of poetry her hobby.

She joined the First Baptist Church of Omaha, when twelve years old, and thereafter was active in social and religious work. She taught in a Mission Sunday School of which her mother was one of the organizers and benefactors, and which later became The Child’s Saving Institute.

Her family moved to Salt Lake where she was a member of the Ladies Literary Club for several years. February 1, 1913 she married H. Bert Merrihew and moved to Lehi.

She was a member of the Athenian club for over thirty years, and served as president, secretary and was treasurer for eight years. She wrote the words for the Club Song entitled, “Our Treasures”. Mrs Harold (Rene) Christensen having written the music, which won first prize from State Federated Clubs.

She was active in Red Cross and civic work; served on the Library Board for several years, designed the fountain in Wines Park, an Athenian Club project, same was erected by committees and club participation.

She passed away July 26, 1947. Merrihew, Harry Bert.

Was born in Des Moines Iowa Received other schooling in Iowa During the history of Lehi, there were several Lehi Drug Stores. Merrihew Drug Store was the second Lehi Drug Store. Harry Bert Merrihew graduated from the Des Moines Iowa Highland park

College of Pharmacy. He arrived in Lehi in 1907 Initially he established his business at 150 West Main. (Garff Building)

This proved unsatisfactory. Three years later in 1910 he purchased the Joyce property at 98 West Main. He built a two­story 40 X 50 foot structure with walls four bricks thick. He converted the upstairs as a lodge room for the Odd Fellows and the

Modern Woodmen of the World fraternal orders. Merrihew had the finest soda fountain in the city’s history. The intricate

walnut cabinet where soda glasses were stored is presently displayed in the Hutchings Museum. This ornate item featured a large arched mirror backdrop and a marble countertop.

February 15, 1913 he married Florence D. Craig of Salt Lake City, Utah. Mr. Merrihew then established a permanent home in Lehi.

On September of 1917, Merrihew sold the Lehi Drug Store to John

Franklin Bradshaw and his brother­in­law Gerald R. Taylor. Merrill, Eva

Miller, Clifford Ran the Royal Theater from 1928 with his father until his fathers death in

1950. Cliff ran the Royal Theater from 1950 until his retirement in 1976. He was

John Clifford Miller was born February 11, 1909, a son of John H. Miller and May Openshaw Miller at Mammoth, Utah.

As a young boy, Cliff operated the machines in his father’s theater and has been in the Theater business ever since that time.

He married Thelma Read, daughter of Dr. H. R. Read and Maud Curry, and to them were born four sons, Read, Dale, Neil and Craig.

In 1925, he and his family moved to American Fork, Utah, three years later they moved to Lehi where they have lived ever since.

Cliff was a director in the Lehi Lions Club for four years, and president of the Lions Club in 1949.

Since moving to Lehi, and taking over the Royal Theater, which was formerly operated by the Old People’s Cooperative, the Millers have remodeled and built the Royal Theater until it is now one of the most modern and best equipped theaters in Utah County.

Miller, John H.

Purchased the Royal Theater in 1928 and ran the Theater with his son Cliff until his death in 1950. He turned it over to his son.

Mitchell, David Richard David Richard Mitchell, was born in American Fork, Utah, August 10,

1888. He received his elementary education in American Fork, high school and

college at Brigham Young University He graduated in 1911, and has done graduate work at Chicago, Brigham Young University and Utah.

He moved to Lehi in 1920, served eighteen years as principal. Lehi High School Principal 1921­1939

Superintendent of Alpine School District since 1938. He has served in the Stake Mutual and Sunday School boards in North

Sevier, Alpine and Lehi Stakes. Lehi Boy Scout Commissioner from 1921 until 1929. Secretary of the Mitchell Hollow Irrigation Company. President, and also secretary of the Utah High School Athletic Association. Member of the National High School Rules committee twelve years, President and Charter Member of the Lehi Lions Club. On the Board of Directors of Timpanogos Knife and Fork Club. Director of the State Bank of Lehi. Mr. Mitchell married Miss Martha Glazier, daughter of Charles Albert and

May Smoot Glazier of Provo, June 10, 1914.

They have four children; all have completed requirements for Bachelors or Masters Degrees from various universities.

Peterson, Anders In 1862, homesteaded the property between 100 west and Center street on

the north side of the road. They built their original adobe one room building on the site of 72 West

Main Street. This was one of the earliest Lehi adobe homes. Peterson Andrew A.

Came to Lehi in 1862 from Sweden. Lehi City Councilor 1880; 1883­90; 1896­97; serving six terms Served 12 years on the School Board Served on the Lehi Water Board Served two years as general watermaster Served 4 years as a Lehi Policeman

Was one of the first stockholder of the Lehi Union Exchange Served as a Directors of the Peoples Co­op. Served 31 years as the President of the Illir Scandinavian Saints of Lehi. Owned the Property on the Southwest corner of Main and Center Street. First built a five room adobe home on the site. Built the current home at 45 West Main in 1889. His property was the gathering place for the Scandinavian Saints. They

had a flowing well, apple trees, and places to sit and eat. Peterson, Andrew

Born December 5, 1865, the son of Andrew A. Peterson and Mary Ann Pherson Peterson.

He helped his father in the farm and with the sheep while a boy, and later in early manhood he had a sheep herd of his own.

He sold his sheep and built a home in the southward part of Lehi City. He married Sarah Emma Webb October 28, 1891 in the Manti Temple. He was a director of the Lehi Irrigation Company. His vocation in life was farming. He died April 19, 1923 at his home in Lehi

Peterson, Andrew F. Fought in the Utah War at Echo Canyon Came to Lehi during the move south Lehi became his home during his journey south.

Peterson, Arthur Janitor at the Lehi High School for many years.

Peterson, Berl Chief of Police 1963­81 Police Chief for 18 years. Acted in many Melodramas in Lehi productions. Became regular police officer until his retirement in 1988.

Led first expedition to Lehi and surveyed area in 1850 Family settled in Lehi in 1851 Built a home on the west side of the Old Lehi Fort in 1854. Made the first water ditches in Lehi. Became Counselor to Bishop David Evans Member of the First Lehi Library Association 1865 On the first boat wreck on Utah Lake and had to swim to shore. May 1851 Served as Lehi Alderman 1863­1866 and Lehi Counselor 1859­1860. Lehi City Treasurer 1863­66. Called by Brigham Young to settle Ephraim in 1867 Called as the Bishop of the Ephraim Ward in 1867 Called as the First Sanpete Stake President. In 1870 called as the Mission President of Scandinavia

Peterson, Charlotte Emma Webb Daughter of William and Harriet Grace Webb was born May 31, 1869, in

Lehi, Utah. She helped her mother in the making of straw hats, sitting for hours

splitting the straws while her mother did the braiding. She married Andrew Peterson, October 28, 1891, in the Manti Temple. She was the mother of six children: Andrew William (married Inez

Hammer), Virgil Hyrum (married Leota Taylor), Lavern (married Leon S. Taylor, Lavern died November 23, 1925, leaving one daughter, Elaine.), Lester (married Gladys Phillips), Ernest (married Zella Davis), and Pearl (married Marion L. Thomas).

She died July 26, 1930, faithful in the gospel. Peterson, Chester M. B.

Born in 1903 in Lehi Carpenter by Trade Gifted work in cabinetry. Helped build the Lehi Fifth Ward Church and did a lot of the beautiful

woodworking of that church. Did a lot of the cabinet work on the Lehi Tabernacle and is known for the

Thomas Powers was born December 9, 1895 in Park City Utah, the son of Thomas Power and Naomi Tictcomb

He moved to Lehi with his parents when a baby. His mother died when he was five years old. His father died five years later. He lived with his sister, Nellie Davis.

He graduated from Lehi High School in 1916. He took a business course at Brigham Young University. He worked for the Utah­Idaho Sugar Co. and the Utah Banking Co.. He went in the army of World War I, and served overseas on the Argonne

front and in Belgium. He worked for the People’s Co­op after he returned from France. Lehi City Treasurer 1920­21

Powers was affectionately known as the Mayor of Main Street because of his gregarious charm

twenty years. He is now serving his second term as a member of the Board of Education

of Alpine School District. He has been a member of the Lehi Fire Department for twenty­seven years

and has been the fire chief for sixteen years­Lehi City Fire Chief 1934­51. He married Ora Frampton of Pleasant Grove, Utah, June 5, 1929, in the

Prior, Dean Dean Prior, former mayor of Lehi City, was born in Spanish Fork, Utah,

September 4, 1903, of pioneer parentage. He was educated in the public schools of Spanish Fork. He attended the Brigham Young University graduating in 1929, and

coming directly to Lehi to teach. Lehi Football Coach for 25 Years. He also served as the Basketball coach and initiated wrestling at the High

School.. Lehi High School Civics and Government teacher for 39 years 1929­1969 President of the Lehi Civic Improvement Association 1965­70 Director of the Lehi Civic Improvement Association 1947­1964 Lehi’s 28th Mayor 1940­43; 1946­47; As mayor initiated the Lehi Civic Improvement Association. Mayor of Lehi during World War II. He served three terms. 1940­43;

1946­47. A water purification system was installed. The old power plant was exchanged for the power company’s distribution system, many miles of oil surfaced roads constructed. A sewer plan and survey were made. The ordinances of Lehi were revised, and other worthwhile community activities were sponsored.

He served two terms as director of Utah Municipal League. During Mayor Pryor’s first term, the problem of unemployment and public

work was serious, as the city sponsored state work projects. Organized the Civil Defense preparations; Air raids and “blackouts” were

practiced. Lehi correspondent for the Salt Lake Tribune. President of the Lehi Lions Club Directed the Lehi Community Recreation department for fifteen years. Served in the Utah State Legislature 1965­66 Elected again to the Utah State Legislature in 1971. He died while in

office. Governor Calvin Rampton spoke at his funeral. He marriedLaRuek in June 1929, and brought his bride to Lehi, where they

have made their home since, with two children blessing the union, LaDeane and Keith.
