The Descent of the Holy Spirit

Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost Sunday
Today, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the culmination of the Easter Season, and the
descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles in the upper room. The feast was also celebrated by
the Jews, but for different reasons. In the Old Testament, the Feast of Pentecost signaled the end
of the grain harvest. The faithful would congregate in Jerusalem to bring the first portion of their
harvest (their “first-fruits”) to the Lord. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit descended upon the
apostles during the festival while they were gathered together away in a private place. As it is
written in the Acts of the Apostles, “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in
one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled the
house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and rest-
ing on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” The apostles were able to convert many to the
Christian faith on the feast of Pentecost, because they were able to converse with the multitudes of
foreign peoples who were gathered in Jerusalem for the harvest festival. Through the Holy Spirit,
they were filled to bursting with grace, and were able to spread it quickly and in abundance to the
gathered crowds.
On the subject of Pentecost, Pope Benedict XVI, as Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, wrote in
Seek That Which is Above: “The Church has rendezvoused to help us experience Easter as the Feast
of feasts, as the basic reason for all celebration and joy, by causing the Easter octave to last for
seven times seven days. So the Feast of Pentecost on the 50th day after Easter is not in fact an
entirely new feast.” As a New Testament people, we are entitled to the “first-fruits” of the Holy
Spirit which will aid us in our mission to live as Jesus Christ lived: charity, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, modesty, chastity, and self-control. By
striving daily for excellence in virtue and in these fruits of the Holy Spirit, we are becoming
recognizable as steadfast Christians in a chaotic and ever-changing world. As the Easter season
comes to a close on this Pentecost Sunday, let us take up our mission to spread the graces of the
Holy Spirit throughout our daily lives, both today and into Ordinary Time.
STEUBENVILLE EAST CONFERENCE
This summer, we will be sending a group of 8 High School students and 5
chaperones to the Steubenville East Conference. Last year, this conference
was very impactful to the youth who went, and we are very excited to be
offering the trip again for even more of our youth.
However, we need your help to get them there! We would like to ask for your prayerful support for
all of us who will be going. Also, after all of the weekend Masses on the weekend of June 17th and
18th, we will be having a second collection to help fund this trip. We thank you in advance for
your prayers and generous hearts, in helping us offer our young people an opportunity to discover
their faith, and encounter the Lord in a deeper way. Thank you.

Although the events of Pentecost took
place “almost 2,000 years ago,” they are not “something far removed from us; they are events which affect us and
become a lived experience in each of us.”

Daly Notes…
I’ve been hearing a lot of rumors regarding the merger of our parishes. First, I would like to be clear about a few things: Saint Mary Church is not closing and I am not moving. Masses and Sacraments will continue to be celebrated at both churches, but we will form a new parish corporation to be called Annunciation Parish. So, why is this happening? The vision of the Archdiocese is to strengthen our witness and commitment to our Lord and our Catholic faith.
In the short term, things will remain the same. The merger of parishes - from what I have seen - takes time. It is a process of prayer, dialogue, and consensus leading to a new way of being a parish. Lay leaders from both parishes having been meeting for the last few weeks, and Father Bock and I have talked on almost a daily basis. Change will be difficult and will cause us to move out of our comfort zone. As these discussions continue and decisions are made, you will be part of the process. The process will be thoroughly communicated, and I am always available to respond to your questions.
Once again, thank you for your prayerful support of the process. And thank you for all that you do for the Catholic Community of Newington.
With prayers,
Father Shawn

Invitation from Seminarian Anthony:
Going Inside the Mass
Has anyone ever told you they think Mass is boring or that they don't come to Church because they "don't get anything out of it?” Do you ever wonder why we say what we say at Mass, or what some of the gestures mean? Do you desire to encounter the Lord Jesus more deeply every time you receive the Eucharist?
The Mass is the cornerstone of our Catholic faith. If you are interested in learning more about what the Holy Mass is, what the rituals mean and some practical ways to be more fulfilled by it, I invite you to attend a special presentation at Saint Mary's on Sunday, June 25th at 3:00 pm. Please invite anyone who you feel might benefit from this interactive presentation, especially young people.
More information to follow. Just wanted to let you know the date in advance.
Thank you all so much for the warm welcome to Newington!
