The assembled crowd “from every nation under heaven,… was bewildered to hear [Jesus’ disciples]… preaching in [their] own language about the marvels of God” (Acts 2:5, 6, 11). As soon as I read this text, I remembered a particular occasion when “language” was a concern. It was the beginning of an adult education “program” in the parish. There was a good mix of people in attendance, all of them eager to continue their faith formation long after many others had decided there was nothing more to form. I was still the “new kid on the block,” someone who didn’t know them yet, but someone who figured she had the know-it-all to teach them, having just completed studies on such an area. Oh, the right words were there – I had the theological jargon down pat, and did my darndest to make sure they got it, the it-topic being grace. Little did I realise from my ivory tower monologue that I was far from the mark. Much of what I was saying was over people’s heads and definitely far from their hearts. In the midst of this babel of words, came a hand and the voice of an elderly woman who said (and I will remember this as long as I remember anything else), “I don’t know if I’m using the right words, but this is how I understand what God’s grace is. It’s simply the love of God for each of us coming into our lives just when we need it. Is that what you’re trying to tell us? I know that’s not how you said it, and I want to be sure that I’m correct in my faith.” The tower toppled, and I with it, and from that moment I learned, really learned, to listen to the experience of the people whom I serve. Through the years, the lesson of that evening has continued to show me the importance – as a teacher, a counsellor, a writer, and a friend – of speaking a language faithful to the tradition and one that also communicates the message in such a way that it “makes sense” in the time and place and circumstances in which people live. This elderly woman wasn’t the last person to raise a hand and say, “This is how I understand it.’ “Is that what you mean?” “Is this okay?” Wherever we are, the task remains the same – to find the right words to say the right thing, how to be faithful to the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Not only is this a lesson I learned, but one that I have tried to teach others. I try to remember this…you must have something to say to people that will both challenge them and build up their hope. It isn’t about explaining all the details but of making connections with people’s lives. Pentecost presents a particular challenge because the central text would seem to be Acts which describes the Spirit-experience as it burst upon Jesus’ disciples who “all met together” (Acts 2:1). Certainly, the dramatic power of this passage continues to have an impact upon the attentive reader or listener, and it is a moving text that has much to say to us of a profligate God whose generous outpouring of love is limited only by our refusal to receive it. Frederick Buechner says of God, “He speaks not just through the sounds we hear, of course, but through events in all their complexity and variety, through the harmonies and disharmonies and counterpoint of all that happens” (Sacred Journey, 3). Pentecost is a case in point. Leeanne

Pentecost - Preaching in Their Own Language.

The assembled crowd “from every nation under heaven,… was

bewildered to hear [Jesus’ disciples]… preaching in [their] own

language about the marvels of God” (Acts 2:5, 6, 11).

As soon as I read this text, I remembered a particular occasion

when “language” was a concern.

It was the beginning of an adult education “program” in the parish. There was a good mix

of people in attendance, all of them eager to continue their faith formation long after many

others had decided there was nothing more to form. I was still the “new kid on the block,”

someone who didn’t know them yet, but someone who figured she had the know-it-all to teach them, having just completed studies on such an area.

Oh, the right words were there – I had the theological jargon down pat, and did my darndest to make sure they got it, the it-topic being grace. Little did I realise from my

ivory tower monologue that I was far from the mark. Much of what I was saying was over

people’s heads and definitely far from their hearts.

In the midst of this babel of words, came a hand and the voice of an elderly woman who

said (and I will remember this as long as I remember anything else), “I don’t know if I’m

using the right words, but this is how I understand what God’s grace is. It’s simply the

love of God for each of us coming into our lives just when we need it. Is that what you’re

trying to tell us? I know that’s not how you said it, and I want to be sure that I’m correct

in my faith.” The tower toppled, and I with it, and from that moment I learned, really

learned, to listen to the experience of the people whom I serve.

Through the years, the lesson of that evening has continued to show me the importance –

as a teacher, a counsellor, a writer, and a friend – of speaking a language faithful to the

tradition and one that also communicates the message in such a way that it “makes

sense” in the time and place and circumstances in which people live. This elderly woman

wasn’t the last person to raise a hand and say, “This is how I understand it.’ “Is that what

you mean?” “Is this okay?” Wherever we are, the task remains the same – to find the right

words to say the right thing, how to be faithful to the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

Not only is this a lesson I learned, but one that I have tried to teach others.

I try to remember this…you must have something to say to people that will both challenge them and build up their hope. It isn’t about explaining all the details but of making connections with people’s lives.

Pentecost presents a particular challenge because the central text would seem to be Acts

which describes the Spirit-experience as it burst upon Jesus’ disciples who “all met

together” (Acts 2:1). Certainly, the dramatic power of this passage continues to have an impact upon the attentive reader or listener, and it is a moving text that has much to say

to us of a profligate God whose generous outpouring of love is limited only by our refusal

to receive it.

Frederick Buechner says of God, “He speaks not just through the sounds we hear, of course, but through events in all their complexity and variety, through the harmonies and disharmonies and counterpoint of all that happens” (Sacred Journey, 3). Pentecost is a case

in point.

Youth Section! Fuse Recap...

Last week we had the 2nd Fuse of the year this time held by Burleigh Heads parish, at Mary Mother of Mercy Church. We had a fantastic turnout and an inspiring down-to-earth talk by Fr Morgan who is a lieutenant in the Army, fought in several wars, has also climbed the highest mountains in the world and held mass at the top! Father's testimony had the children engrossed as he artfully quoted the lyrics of Bob Marley’s “One Love" whom of course, he also shook hands with (as well as Mother Theresa’s - although it was really more of a smack from her). Offering the sacrament of reconciliation and adoration, the holy spirit flooded the church as 50 youth gathered each worshiped and gave their heart earnestly to God. Hallelujah for His grace and mercy! For those that made it, it was truly an inspiring and God-filled event. For those that didn’t we truly invite you to the next event which is actually a 4- day RETREAT during the school holidays. For more information email

Plenary Council 2020 – Listen to what the Spirit is saying.

Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops’ decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and 2021. It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future.

To prepare the agenda for the Plenary Council, all of God’s people are invited to reflect on the question: “What do

you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” Find out more about the Plenary Council 2020 at the new website, now online: www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As you know we are moving closer to our application for approval for the new building and we have now reached a critical point and need your assistance. Council have requested us to provide a Traffic/Parking survey which

will be conducted next week during Mass on the Monday 21st, Wednesday 23rd and Sunday 27th May.

The purpose of this survey is to show to council we do not need to provide additional parking on site. If council requires us to provide additional parking this will add over $80,000 in building works which is a

considerable burden on our resources.

What can YOU do to help during the survey period, especially next Sunday?

Follow the direction of on site parking directors if

you are parking in the car park;

Walk to Mass or ride a bicycle on these days to

reduce congestion;

Car pool with a friend you know is coming to Mass,

4 people in 1 car is better than 4 in 2 cars;

Catch a taxi;

During the above dates you will be asked to complete a brief survey after Mass to provide data to the traffic survey company. Please pray for a favourable outcome.

The Children’s Liturgy

As we celebrated Mother’s Day last Sunday, the facilitators (Andrea, Sean and Raphaelle) made time to create a card

(children under 5’s) and discussed (older children) with the children on how special our Mother is.

For the children under 5’s Raphaelle brought some artwork for the children to be creative and help them make a Mother’s day card, as a token of love and appreciation.

As for the older children’s group, besides covering the Sunday Liturgy of the word, Isabelle Mananghaya (one of the children who attends the CLOTW) shared how she appreciates Andrea and Sean “talked about, how important our mother is and how much

our mother loves and cares for us.”

Once again thank you Raphaelle, Andrea and Sean for your time facilitating and organising the Sunday, Children's Liturgy of the Word. If anyone is interested in assisting with The Children’s Liturgy of the Word Program please contact Maria Blancia on 5510 2222 (Wednesday or Friday) or email [email protected]
