The Italian Parish of Indianapolis

B envenuto! Welcome to Holy

Rosary Church! Whether you

are a lifelong parishioner, a first-

time visitor to our parish, or

someone in between, we are

grateful you have joined us today.

Founded in 1909 as the Italian

Parish of Indianapolis, we continue

to serve as the parish home of

people of Italian heritage and also

embrace all Catholics in union with

Rome, including those devoted to

the Traditional Latin Mass

(Extraordinary Form) and the

Anglican Usage of the Roman Rite.

In the words of our founding

pastor, Msgr. Marino Priori:

“The church is the temple of the

Lord, the gate of heaven. Come

after a week of earthly cares, after

so much toil, after so many

sorrows, after so much pain. Rest

your limbs. Regenerate your spirit

at the sources of grace. Raise your

mind to God; thank Him for the

benefits received through His

creation and in daily life; ask for

strength so you can win all of life’s

struggles, and be able to possess

the fruits of redemption.”

points of potential contamination at a minimum, the weekly bulletin will remain available only through electronic

means. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to those who prefer to pick up a paper bulletin at

church, but the health of our parishioners and guests is of great important to us.

MASS INTENTIONS: The standard stipend for Masses in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is $10. Requests should indicate whether people are living or de-

ceased, and must be typed or written legibly. We will attempt to honor requested dates, but cannot guarantee they will be available. We recommend such

requests be made at least eight months in advance. Except in the year of an individual’s death, no more than 12 Saturday evening/Sunday Masses may be

requested or offered for the repose of his/her soul in a calendar year. Intentions that cannot be offered here within a year of reception are, at the pastor’s dis-

cretion, subject to being sent to the archdiocesan Mission Office. Make checks payable to Holy Rosary Church.

At this time, the City of Indianapolis is limiting attendance at religious services in Marion County to 50% ca-pacity; therefore, we are requiring advance signups for most Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. A link to the online signup site will be emailed weekly to parishioners who subscribe to our email notification service.

The church will be open weekdays between the

morning and evening Masses for personal prayer

(with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on

Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

Archbishop Thompson has dispensed the faithful

from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until Aug.

15.

The archbishop requests that all Catholics in the

Archdiocese of Indianapolis attend Mass and other

services ONLY in their home parishes until June

15 so that each parish may better control attendance

and communicate in advance with those who will

attend.

At Sunday Masses, there will be a basket in the

center aisle of church to collect your weekly dona-

tions to the parish. Please have your donations

ready when you arrive to church, as this basket will

be removed shortly after Mass begins. Donations for

today’s designated second collection, the Society of

St. Vincent de Paul, should also be placed in this

basket; please be sure to put the SVdP donations in a

separate envelope. The designated second collection

for next week is the Education of Future Archdioce-

san Priests. (You can also donate to the parish and to

all second collections via our Onling Giving portal.)

P entecost, or Whitsunday (sometimes written as Whit Sunday), is arguably the first and oldest feast of the Church.

It dates back to the disciples‟ celebration following the Resurrection of the Lord. The descent of the Holy Spirit

occurred on the Jewish feast of Pentecost marking the passage of 50 days since the Paschal Sabbath. It is often consid-

ered the day the Church was established because it was the day on which the Church received from her Lord and Sav-

ior the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It is referred to as “Whitsunday” because the eve of Pentecost was one of the

original days when adults would be received into the Church, and they would appear the following day in their white

baptismal garments.

Pentecost (traditionally with its octave*) completes the holiest days of the Church‟s liturgical year that begin with

the Paschal Triduum. The Church since the earliest times have celebrated these days as a perpetual Sunday, forbidding

not only fasting but also, in ancient practice, kneeling and genuflection. (The more ancient practice of not kneeling

during the Easter season is still kept by the Eastern Churches.)

Eastertide, then, is like one continued Feast. It is the remark made by Tertullian, in the 3rd century. He is reproaching those

Christians who regretted having renounced, by their Baptism, the festivities of the pagan year; and he thus addresses them:

“If you love Feasts, you will find plenty among us Christians; not merely Feasts that last only for a day, but such as continue

for several days together. The Pagans keep each of their Feasts once in the year; but you have to keep each of yours many

times over, for you have the eight days of its celebration. Put all the Feasts of the Gentiles together, and they do not amount

to our fifty days of Pentecost” [De Idolatria, cap. xiv.]. St. Ambrose speaking on the same subject, says: “If the Jews are not

satisfied with the Sabbath of each week, but keep also one which lasts a whole month, and another which lasts a whole year;

— how much more ought not we to honor our Lord‟s Resurrection? Hence our ancestors have taught us to celebrate the fifty

days of Pentecost as a continuation of Easter. They are seven weeks, and the Feast of Pentecost commences the eighth. …

During these fifty days, the Church observes no fast, as neither does she on any Sunday, for it is the day on which our Lord

rose: and all these fifty days are like so many Sundays” (Dom Prosper Gueranger, The Liturgical Year).

Let us open our hearts on this Feast of Pentecost to joys and celebrations that point not to the pleasures of this earth,

but to the true blessedness of the promises made to us on the Cross and already fulfilled in God‟s time in Jesus‟ Res-

urrection.

______________________________________

* Prior to the changes made in the liturgical calendar following the Second Vatican Council, Pentecost was celebrated as an “octave,” eight

days beginning with Pentecost Sunday and ending with Trinity Sunday. We continue to observe this octave in the Extraordinary Form.

Anglican Use Ordinariate sending priest to serve in Indiana

Dear Parishioners,

I recently received good news from the Anglican Use Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter,

along with confirmation from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, that a priest from the Ordinari-

ate, Fr. Jeffery Moore, is being sent to Indiana to work with and grow the Anglican Use com-

munity our state. Additionally, and along with the assignment of Fr. Moore, the Ordinariate

expressed the intention to canonically erect a community here in Indiana. (While the Ordinari-

ate has assigned clergy to work here at Holy Rosary, officially the Anglican Use community

here has always been a ministry of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and of Holy Rosary Parish,

and has never had formal canonical recognition within the Ordinariate.)

Fr. Moore is currently the parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church, a parish of the Ordi-

nariate of the Chair of St. Peter in San Antonio, Texas. He also serves as the chaplain of the Mother of the Ameri-

cas Institute, a think tank for the new evangelization. A husband and father of several children, he had been an

Episcopal clergyman until converting to Catholi-

cism in 2006. He has been a Catholic priest for 10

years.

I have met with Fr. Moore and informed him of

the history of the Anglican Use community here at

Holy Rosary. I will continue to work with him as

he seeks to establish an independent Anglican Use

community as part of the Ordinariate of the Chair

of St. Peter. The details of his assignment and of

that canonical transition are still being worked out.

While Fr. Moore is being assigned to work with

the Anglican Use community in Indiana, the Arch-

diocese of Indianapolis has made it clear that he is

not being assigned to Holy Rosary and will not be

part of the staff or exercising his priestly ministry

as part of Holy Rosary Parish. It seems likely that

he will be working full time as a hospital chaplain

or some other related ministry while celebrating the

Anglican Use liturgies.

Not even the official date of arrival has been set

for Fr. Moore and his family. It is likely that he and

they will arrive in Indianapolis sometime toward

the end of June or beginning of July. We will pro-

vide updates as we learn more.

When the Moores do eventually arrive and you

see Father or his family around Holy Rosary,

please be sure to extend a warm Hoosier welcome

to them. — Fr McCarthy
