Theme for Pentecost 7

The Christian finds rest in Jesus. From the beginning of time, God provided rest for his creation.

He blessed the seventh day and set it apart, that man might learn to find his rest in God alone.

In Jesus, the Christian finds rest from his burdens, rest from his battles, and rest forever in heaven.

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Confession of Sins

P: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and peni-tent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be

the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Lord, Have Mercy

P: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all of your gifts with grati-tude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy. P: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for

the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy. P: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer

here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us in

your tender care. C: Amen.

Prayer of the Day

P: God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. First Lesson Joshua 23:1-11

1 After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then old and well advanced in years, 2 summoned all Israel-their elders, leaders, judges and officials-and said to them: "I am old and well advanced in years. 3 You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you. 4 Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain-the nations I conquered-between the Jordan and the Great Sea in the west. 5 The LORD your God himself will drive them out of your way. He will push them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.

6 "Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. 7 Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. 8 But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now.

9 "The LORD has driven out before you great and pow-erful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised. 11 So be very careful to love the LORD your God.”

Verse of the Day

P: Alleluia. Happy are they who hear the Word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience. Alleluia. (Luke 8:15 cf. RSV)

Gospel Lesson Matthew 11:25-30

25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little chil-dren. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my bur-den is light."

P: This is the gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

Sermon Text 1 Corinthians 1:4-9

4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge-- 6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be re-vealed. 8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Nicene Creed

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten

of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begot-ten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incar-nate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was bur-ied. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from

the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is wor-shiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

P: Lord of power and grace, whose eyes are on the righteous and whose ears are open to their cry, hear the prayer of your people as we come now in thankfulness for the mercies that you pour down on us anew each day.

We thank you for the gifts of your mighty providence. Make us mindful, O Lord, that

you have provided us with life, breath, and being and are the source of our daily bread.

We praise you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, who you sent to be the Savior of

the world. Grant that we may believe in him with all our hearts, learning from him the great truths of the kingdom to which he bore faithful witness.

Grant us your Holy spirit, that we may produce the fruits of righteousness. May he

endow us with unwavering faith, that we might always be ready to do your will. We pray for the nations of the earth. Subdue terror and tyranny everywhere, and call

forth leaders who acknowledge that you are Lord over all the earth. Bless our own land. May it ever follow that which is good and turn from that which is wicked, that our people may prosper in uprightness and integrity.

Hear, O Lord, our cry for those who are afflicted. Grant them health in body and soul,

and save them for your mercy’s sake. O Lord of life and death, we thank you for all the mercies with which you blessed our

fellow believer Tim Johnston, now fallen asleep. We thank you especially for having brought him to the knowledge of your Son, Jesus Christ. We pray that you would comfort his family and all who mourn his death with your precious promises, and cheer them with the sure hope of a blessed reunion in heaven. Grant the lifeless body rest and at last, together with us all, a joyful resurrection to life everlasting. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain hearts of wisdom and finally be saved, through Jesus Christ, our risen and ever-living Lord.

P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer.

P: Guide and uphold us during our pilgrimage in this world, and bring us all to our heav-

enly home. Receive these petitions in the name of the Prince of life, Jesus our Lord. C: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

P: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the pow-er and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.

The Words of Institution

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body †, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood † of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen.
