TODAY’S FOCUS
What sort of loss hurts the most? A financial setback? An unhappy diagnosis from the doctor? A relationship gone sour? The degree to which something hurts when you lose it is likely a measure of how much you loved that thing. Jesus refuses to take second place to anything else in our hearts. Even family relationships. The salvation He gives us endures forever. Everything in this world is only temporary. Therefore, even if we suffer when we lose earthly blessings, Jesus’ love and blessing are the things we cannot live without. If we have Jesus, then all is well for us.

Christ says the Sacrament is an expression of unity (1 Co 10:16-17). We WANT to be unified with you on the basis of Christ and His doctrine! Honesty compels us to ask you to WAIT before communing with us: 1) until you’ve had a chance to find out what we teach; 2) until you make your unity with us evident by membership at Peace. HYMN 767 – THE LORD IS MY LIGHT – A SPANISH SONG
Did you notice the words don’t rhyme? That’s because this is a Spanish song. In fact, it is a liturgical Spanish song. It is a rendition of Psalm 27.
The Lord Is My Light was composed by Alberto Taulé (1932–2007). Taulé served as pastor of the oldest church in Barcelona, Spain. As presbyter and composer of liturgical music he specialized in organ, composition and Gregorian chant. Taulé also knew from experience: quality music and the regular introduction of new songs are vital to a parish's spiritual health. He composed a collection entitled Día de Fiesta to give small Spanish-speaking assemblies new songs for every season of the year which were within reach of the congregations’ ability to perform in a liturgical setting.

What comfort does Psalm 37 offer as we consider the hard words of Jesus in the Gospel Lesson?

During the week you can pray the “Litany of Thanksgiving for Suffering.” Reread the psalm or the Scripture lessons. Sing to yourself Take the World, but Give Me Jesus when you go to bed at night.
WHY DOES THE PASTOR MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS?
There is nothing magical about it. Typically, you’ll see the pastor make the sign of the cross whenever the 2nd person of the Trinity is mentioned. It simply serves as a reminder that the Son of God has redeemed us from all our sins.
When the pastor recites the Words of Institution for the Lord’s Supper he may make the sign of the cross at the word “is”: This “is” my body/blood. The purpose is to emphasize the Real Presence of Christ’s body and blood in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION
Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.
Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.
For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you have prepared joys beyond understanding for those who love you. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON Exodus 32:15-29
15Moses turned and went down the mountain, with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hand—tablets that were written on both sides, written on one side and on the other. 16The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
17When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is the noise of war in the camp.”
18Moses said, “It is not the sound of people who shout for victory; neither is it the sound of people who cry because of defeat. But I do hear the sound of people who are celebrating.”
19As soon as Moses came near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing, and Moses’ anger burned. So he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20He took the calf that they had made, burned it with fire, ground it to powder, and scattered it on the water. Then he made the people of Israel drink it.
21Moses said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you have brought such a great sin on them?”
22Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn. You know these people. They are set on evil, 23so they said to me, ‘Make a god for us, who will go ahead of us, because this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24So I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, pull it off.’ So they gave it to me. I threw it into the fire and out came this calf.”
25When Moses saw that the people were out of control (for Aaron had let them get so out of control that they were disgraced among their enemies), 26Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Whoever is on the LORD’s side, come to me!”
All the descendants of Levi gathered themselves together to Moses. 27He said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man is to strap his sword on his thigh and go back and forth throughout the camp, from one gate of the camp to the other, and every man is to kill his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.’” 28The Levites did what Moses said, and that day about three thousand men from among the people fell. 29Moses said, “Begin your service of the LORD today. Yes, because every man among you took a stand against his son and against his brother, the LORD is bestowing a blessing on you today.”

Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. SECOND LESSON 1 John 2:15-17
15Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, boasting about material possessions—is not from the Father but from the world. 17The world and its desires pass away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever.
For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

“Loving the World or Living Forever”

LITANY OF THANKSGIVING FOR SUFFERING
I praise you, Lord, for everything you have ever taken away from me or refused to give me.
For I trust you to remove anything that might stand between me and my Savior.
Thank you, God, for every trouble you allow into my life.
For through each sorrow, you draw me closer to your Word and promises.
Father, I laud you for the loved ones you have called to yourself
For through your loving actions, you not only rescue your children from the sorrows of this life; you also remind us who remain to prepare for eternity.
Savior, I express my sincere appreciation for never having enough money.
For with every penny you withhold, you turn me to the one thing needful and lead me to pray for my daily bread.
I exalt you, King of Creation, for the hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, blizzards, and floods you allowed this past year.
For by these, you warn the wicked of your impending judgment and provide believers channels for their charity.
Jesus, Head of the Church, thank you for not revealing how you will rescue your people in the face of seemingly impossible problems.
For by withholding your answer, you lead us not to rely on our human wisdom and to trust implicitly your divine wisdom and protection.

At every turn in life, turn our hearts to true repentance and sincere thanksgiving.
So when you say, “All things work together for good,” I come to trust that you really mean “all things.” Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.
