The Sacrament of Holy Communion is offered to all baptized Christians who seek Christ’s gift of grace.

who receive Holy Communion in their home congregations are invited to share in this sacrament of grace.

Non-communing children are welcome to come with their families to receive a blessing.

Our staffed nursery is available during worship for children up to age four. The nursery is located on

the lower level at the opposite end of the building near the church offices. There is also a changing and

feeding area in the nursery for your use.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

We keep a holy silence before the service.

Prayers of preparation are found on page 72 of the Red Worship Hymnal.

PRELUDE What a Friend We Have in Jesus arr. Robert Hobby

(b.1962) We stand.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the strength of our ancestors, the host of this meal, the builder

of the city that is to come. Amen.

If we have died with Christ, we will also live with Christ. Let us confess our sin to the one who is faithful.

We kneel. Silence is kept for confession and meditation.

God our helper, we confess the many ways we have failed to live as your disciples. We have not

finished what we began. We have feasted with friends but ignored strangers. We have been

captivated by our possessions. Lift our burdens, gracious God. Refresh our hearts and forgive our sin.

Raise us to the new life you have chosen for us in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

There is rejoicing in heaven when sinners repent. Put your trust in these promises: God will never leave

you or forsake you. You who were lost have been found. For the sake of ☩ Jesus Christ, your sins are

forgiven. Rejoice with the angels at this good news.

Amen.

We stand.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

CHILDREN’S SERMON

Children ages 12 and under are invited to come forward for the Children’s Sermon.

FIRST READING Genesis 32:22-31

22The same night [Jacob] got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children,

and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23He took them and sent them across the stream, and

likewise everything that he had. 24Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until

daybreak. 25When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip

socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26Then he said, “Let me go,

for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” 27So he said

to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28Then the man said, “You shall no longer

be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have

prevailed.” 29Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you

ask my name?” And there he blessed him. 30So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For I have

seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” 31The sun rose upon him as he passed

Penuel, limping because of his hip.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 121

1I lift up my eyes | to the hills;

from where is my | help to come?

2My help comes | from the LORD,

the maker of heav- | en and earth.

3The LORD will not let your | foot be moved

nor will the one who watches over you | fall asleep.

4Behold, the keep- | er of Israel

will neither slum- | ber nor sleep;

5the LORD watches | over you;

the LORD is your shade at | your right hand;

6the sun will not strike | you by day,

nor the | moon by night.

7The LORD will preserve you | from all evil

and will | keep your life.

8The LORD will watch over your going out and your | coming in,

from this time forth for- | evermore.

SECOND READING 2 Timothy 3:14--4:5

14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you

learned it, 15and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you

for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for

reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17so that everyone who belongs to God may be

proficient, equipped for every good work.

4:1In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his

appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: 2proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time

is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. 3For

the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will

accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, 4and will turn away from listening to the

truth and wander away to myths. 5As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an

evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Luke 18:1-8

The Holy Gospel according to Luke, 17th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord!

1Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. 2He said,

“In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. 3In that

city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my

opponent.’ 4For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God

and no respect for anyone, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice,

so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’ ” 6And the Lord said, “Listen to what

the unjust judge says. 7And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and

night? Will he delay long in helping them? 8I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And

yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ!

HYMN OF THE DAY Lord, Teach Us How to Pray Aright #745

APOSTLES’ CREED

Living together in trust and hope, let us confess our faith.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was

buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into

heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the

living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Knowing the one in whom we trust, and with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us, we offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all in need.

We kneel. Each petition ends: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Trusting and delighting in you, we commend all our lives into your loving hands. We offer these

prayers in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

We stand. We share signs of Christ’s peace with one another.

TITHES AND OFFERINGS

We share our gifts for those in need and for the church’s mission.

ANTHEM The Mission John Mohr/Randall Dennis

Dale Wallace, tenor

There’s a call going out across the land in every nation,

A call to all who swear allegiance to the cross of Christ;

A call to true humility, to live our lives responsibly,

To deepen our devotion to the cross at any price.

Let us then be sober, moving only in the Spirit,

As aliens and strangers in a hostile, foreign land.

The message we’re proclaiming is repentance and forgiveness,

The Author of salvation, to the dying race of man.

Refrain: To love the Lord our God is the heartbeat of our mission,

The spring from which service over flows.

Across the street or around the world, the mission’s still the same:

Proclaim and live the truth in Jesus’ name.

As a candle is consumed by the passion of the flame,

Spilling light unsparingly throughout a darkened room,

Let us burn to know Him deeper, then our service flaming bright,

Will radiate His passion and blaze with holy light. Refrain copyright 1989 Sony Life Music/Molto Bravo! Music (ASCAP)
