Thepentatonicscalehasbeenusedinawidevarietyofnon-WesternandtraditionalWesternartmusic.ComposerslikeDebussy,Ravel,andBartokareresponsibleforgivingitahomeinclassicalmusic.1Pentatonicscalesalsohavebeenextensivelyusedbymusiciansinallgenresofpopularmusic.Mostofusunknowinglylearnedthepentatonicscalewhenweplayedtheblackkeysonthepiano.Thepentatonicscaleisanattractivechoiceforimprovisersandcomposersalikeforseveralimportantreasons:
• Itsasymmetricalfivenoteconstructionallowsustogenerateawidevarietyofshapes.Thescale’scombinationofstepsandskipsallowsforincreasedmelodicangularity.
• Becauseitonlyhasfivenotes,improvisers(andcomposers)cantargetspecificharmoniccolorswiththeirnotechoices.Thesecellsoftenlineupwellwithtraditionalpianovoicings.
• Onmostinstruments,pentatonicscales“lay”well(evenonbrassinstruments)andareeasytolearn.
• Itisasubsetoftheminorbluesscale.• Thepentatonicscaleiseasilymodifiedtomatchupwithalteredchords.

Spendsometimeplayingoverthesechordsandslowlytryingouteachofthethreemostinsidepentatonicscalestoworktohearthevariouscolorsthatthescalespresenttoyou.PentatonicsasameanstoplayoutsidetheharmonyAsweventurefurtheroutsidetheharmony,wemovetomoredistantlyrelatedkeys,theonesthataredirectlyacrosstheclockface.Forexample,themostdistantlyrelatedkeystoCmajorareF#,B,andDb,andtheyarethefurthestawayontheclockface.Whileitisverymuchanacquiredtaste,tryplayingtheDbpentatonicscaleoveraCmajorchordtohearitsexceptionaldissonance.Mostplayerswhoareespeciallyeffectiveatplayingoutsidetheharmonyusethosemomentstogenerateextremetensionandgreatresolution.Iencouragemystudentstostartbyplayingsomethinginsidetheharmony,thenmovingoutside,andthencomingbackinside,likethisexampleusingtheCandDbmajorpentatonicscalesoverCMaj7:
