PENSHURST WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 2 From The Principal’s Desk Welcome back to school for Term 2. We are all well and truly back into the swing of learning as we prepare for another exciting ten weeks. Yesterday, 24 of our students participated in the second Digi Ed Claymation workshop. These have been a great opportunity for students to work collaboratively to create animated movies. A selection of the student-created films will be placed on the school webpage for parents to see. I would like to highlight some new initiatives which focus on student wellbeing. In partnership with Learning Links, Penshurst West is offering selected students targeted programs that support the development of social skills, learning and behaviour. The school is using Gonski funding, along with the RAM allocation, to provide this support in addition to the speech program that has recently been implemented. If you have received a permission note regarding the Stop. Think. Do, Cool Kids or Revved Up programs and would like more information about these programs, please talk with your child’s teacher. The first week of the Sports in Schools program will commence tomorrow. Apologies for the incorrect message last week regarding the commencement of the program, but as it was the first day of the school term, the session had been postponed. This term, the Sports in Schools program is targeting PE and Athletics. Finally, a reminder that the NAPLAN assessments, which are nationwide, will commence next Tuesday for all Year 3 and 5 students. Mother’s Day Stall The P&C Mother’s Day Stall will be held Thursday 5 May. Students will have an opportunity to visit the stall throughout the school day to purchase a small gift for a loved one. Prices will range from $2 to $10. Gifts will also be available to purchase Friday morning before school for any student who may forget their money on Thursday. Opportunity Class Placement Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement applications have opened. All students seeking Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2017 will be required to take the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 27 July 2016 Applications must be completed online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ ocplacement. Online applications close Friday 13 May 2016. Late applications will not be accepted. TERM 2, WEEK 2 April 2016 Penshurst West Public School Ph: 9570 4602 www.penshurstw-p.schools.nsw.edu.au

PENSHURST WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 2

From The

Principal’s Desk

Welcome back to school for Term 2.

The school is using Gonski funding, along with the RAM allocation, to provide this support in addition to the speech program that has recently

been implemented.

Students will have an opportunity to visit the stall

throughout the school day to purchase a small gift for a loved one. Prices will range from $2 to $10. Gifts will also be available to purchase Friday morning before school for any student who may forget their money on Thursday.

Opportunity Class Placement

Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement applications have opened. All students seeking Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2017 will be required to take the Opportunity Class Placement Test on Wednesday 27 July 2016 Applications must be completed online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ ocplacement. ANZAC Commemoration

On April 17, Hunter, Max and Samara read a passage at the Mortdale RSL ANZAC Commemoration on behalf of the Mortdale District Girl Guides and the Second Mortdale Club Scouts. They received much praise for their public speaking skills and represented their respective Scouts and Brownie formations, as well as Penshurst West, wonderfully.

Scholastic Book Review Crew

Congratulations to Abigail M, Bella H and Lillian K who have become members of the Scholastic 2016 Reading Review Crew. They will join Luka B in reviewing new, and sometimes yet-to-be-published, books for Scholastic. Their reviews will be published on the Scholastic website and may feature in the Book Club catalogues or local bookstores. Well done!

NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge

Our school has registered to participate in the 2016 NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge Primary School Sport Challenge. The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport, games and physical activity and to have more students, more active, more often! Over a ten week period (16/16 – 5/8/16), our school will be monitoring the physical activity the children do during class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport. What we do outside school hours will also count towards the Challenge award. Each student will be issued with a Challenge log book to record their physical activity. Students completing the Challenge will receive a

personalised certificate, signed by the Premier of New South Wales. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the challenge please see Miss Andreacchio. I know our students are really looking forward to participating in the NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport Challenge and having fun along the way!

Field Officer Recruitment

As you may be aware, the next Census of Population and Housing will be held on Tuesday 9 August 2016. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is now seeking motivated and community minded Field Officers to work on the 2016 Census.

The quality of Census data relies heavily on the quality field staff recruited. If you are interested, please visit the ABS website or click on the following link: www.abs.gov.au /careers

ANZAC Day Commemoration Assembly

On Wednesday 27 April, Penshurst West commemorated ANZAC Day by holding a whole-school assembly. The school leaders ran the ‘A-Z of ANZAC Day’ assembly, relaying important historical information about ANZAC Day as well as teaching their peers about the role Australian soldiers played in the war. The Year 2 choir also did a wonderful job singing ‘Imagine’ as part of the assembly.
