Penrose-St. Francis celebrated our 125th year in 2012. This milestone speaks to a rich history ofsupport, one in which you play an important part. In 1887, the citizens of Colorado Springs donatedmoney to build the first hospital on a hill just east of downtown off Pikes Peak Avenue. From that pointforward, our community has given generously to ensure world class health care continues for everyonein Colorado Springs. We thank you for your part of that legacy. For the men, women and children whohave benefited from the programs and services that you have helped to fund, your philanthropy hasmade a profound difference.

This annual report is a way of highlighting the work of your investment in Penrose-St. Francis. Withinthese pages, you will see the importance of your gifts and the differences you make. Furthermore, it isthe opportunity for staff and volunteer leadership to highlight the stewardship of your contribution. Asalways, 100% of contributions to Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation are used to support thishospital and its programs – exactly as you, the donor, intends.

It was Sept. 1, 1887, when four Sisters of St. Francis stepped off a train right here in Colorado Springs to open the community’s first hospital. Now – 125 years later – Penrose-St Francis Health Services continues to nurture the health of our community with the same compassion and mission that’s been our foundation for decades.

However, the health care landscape in the region is changing rapidly. Health care systems and providers will soon be paid based on positive outcomes and improving the health of a specific population, rather than a volume-based model. Population health will include new services, including care coordination, wellness and health coaching, patient navigation, improved education and more patient/family decision making.

There will also be a more focused approach on prevention and overall wellness. This approach will allowfor care that is patient-centric, cost-effective and of the highest quality. And we intend to be the leaderwith this strategy.

At Penrose-St. Francis, we began piloting a population health approach with our own associates. Wepartnered with a group of preferred physicians that were already, or in the process of becoming, apatient-centered medical home. Along with our dedicated wellness team of experts, we offered healthmanagement programs, exercise classes, Employee Assistance Program and spiritual counseling, wellnesscoaching, and a supportive benefit designed to encourage participation.

One year later, we had 43 percent of our wellness program participants aligned with one of these preferredphysicians and noted improvement in preventive screenings, lower medical trend costs (about 12 percentlower than the non-preferred physicians), and reduced high risk categories in obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

By combining our efforts through our wellness program and physician partners, we have also seen positivetrends in our disability claims, worker compensation claims and increased productivity levels. Our pilotprogram is now being adopted system-wide, impacting nearly 14,500 associates at 13 hospitals.

We’ve enjoyed another banner year from a quality outcome perspective with HealthGrades naming us oneof America’s 50 Best Hospitals for the fifth consecutive year, and the only recipient in Colorado! Additionally, our Vascular and Orthopedic Surgery Programs were tops in the state. The designation ranks us among thetop 1 percent in the nation for overall clinical excellence.

We simply could not provide this world-class health care to our community without your continued support.I thank you for your friendship and partnership. God bless!

TRADITIONSSupporting our Patients The Sisters of Charity Patient Assistance Fund honors the legacy set by the founding sisters to helppatients in financial need. In FY2012, Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation provided over $172,000 to 232patients experiencing unforeseen financial crisis. Financial support can range from purchasing medicalequipment like walkers or wheelchairs, to assistance with living expenses.

Late in the summer of 2012, one recipient called to express her gratitude. She asked to remain anonymous, but her story is a powerful testament to the importance of this program.

“It’s hard for me to accept money; I know how hard it is to earn money. I have always worked two or three jobs to get by. But with cancer, the treatment becomes a part-time job. I had to work less and money became tight. One of the biggest impacts on not being able to pay normal bills was the emotional stress. In some ways, the financial pressure was worse than the cancer. It was so intense that I started to lose interest in being treated all together. I was giving up. I thought: What kind of life am I struggling to stay in? It was such a horrible emotional time. I lost hope.

When I was told that I could get assistance, it was such a sense of relief. I thought I was dreaming. I never knew that anything like that existed. It felt like I could finally let go and get my mind settled. It renewed my sense of hope and made me feel like I was no longer alone. I will never forget that gift. I wish I could send a thank you card to everyone who gave.”

At Penrose-St. Francis, caring for those who are ill is our mission. Yet caring does not end when the patientis discharged. For many, leaving the hospital is just the first step in a journey back to a new normal life. Thetalented staff and physicians at Penrose-St. Francis ensure world class care within our walls. Our donorshelp ensure that the caring is long lasting.

Supporting Each OtherFY2012 marked the 30th Anniversary of the Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation’sAssociate Campaign. Since1982, the campaign has supported the greatest needs ofthe hospital, including helping our patients and associates. In 1989, the AssociateFinancial Assistance program was started to help associates who found them-selves in unforeseen financial crisis. This year, 648 employees received assistancetotaling $179,838. Assistance ranged from replacing a furnace in the middle ofJanuary to emergency assistance for employees displaced by the Waldo Canyon Fire.

The characteristic that makes the Penrose-St. Francis Associate Campaign so unique is its associatevolunteers. The campaign is organized and run by PSF employee volunteers from every department of thehospital system. This year’s associate campaign, “Lend a Hand…Touch a Life”, was led by 134 staffvolunteers and raised over $322,000. With 962 employees donating, the Penrose-St. Francis AssociateCampaign remains one of the most successful hospital employee campaigns in the country. Whether fundsare raised for needed equipment, patient financial assistance, associate financial assistance or new buildingconstruction, there is no greater example of our heritage of caring than through the annual Associate Campaign.

Soirée 2011The Flight For Life helipad and hangar atSt. Francis Medical Center transformed forone evening in August 2011, for Soirée 2011“Behind the Scenes”. The inaugural Soiréecelebrated our life-saving medical firstresponders, with proceeds benefittingPenrose-St. Francis Emergency and TraumaServices and Flight For Life Colorado (FFL).

300 attendees mingled with FFL crew andEmergency and Trauma staff, and saw ourmission in action first-hand, as the FFLhelicopter and crew took off on an emergency call. We thank our Soirée 2011 Committee chair Jenny Thatcherand the committee members for a job well done. Our heartfelt thanks to our Soirée 2011 Sponsors:

Emergency Department ExpansionThe Emergency Department (ED) at Penrose Hospital is the oldest in Colorado Springs, serving 45,000patients each year. In July 2011, a $4 million expansion project began, designed to improve patientaccess, decrease waiting times, and streamline processes for ED staff. This increased the ED to 31 exam rooms, reconfigured rooms into efficient “pods”, and incorporated a covered entry and new greeting station.

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation combined efforts to raise the funding needed, and construction was completed in Summer 2012. This milestone was celebrated at an opening reception, honoring Foundation friend and ED volunteer Thelma Morici and her late husband Peter. We sincerely thank Thelma and the Foundation donors who helped make this transformation a reality.

Gifts to Penrose-St. Francis Health Foundation (PSFHF) support a variety of programs and services, and provide healing, comfort, education and life-saving care to our communities. In FY2012, yourdonations helped support Penrose-St. Francis programs, such as these:

• THE JULIE PENROSE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU) at St. Francis Medical Center provides high-level care to premature babies and babies with severe medical conditions. Grants and donations to PSFHF purchased two Giraffe Incub- ators, four phototherapy light systems, a neonatal transport monitor, and several medical grade recliners. These purchases are vital for our staff in caring for our tiniest and often most critical patients.

• PENROSE CANCER CENTER provides community outreach education, and offers survivorship programs to help patients as they transition from cancer treatment to post-treatment care. In FY2012, grants and donations provided integrative therapies (chair yoga, Nia, and art and music therapy), survivorship workshops, and educational programs. PSFHF also funded the Penrose Cancer Center Lecture Series, bringing nationally renowned speakers to Colorado Springs to provide medical education to physicians and staff.

• LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY was a strong focus in FY2012, providing our associates and physicians with the tools and systems needed to provide the highest quality care. PSFHF funding helped support the Emergency Department renovation, the Operating Room expansion, and purchased needed diagnostic and surgical equipment.

• PENROSE URGENT CARE AT CRIPPLE CREEK opened in 2011 to fill a gap in medical services in this geographically-isolated community. Partnering with the City of Cripple Creek, the clinic provides care for minor illnesses and injuries, occupational health, and outpatient lab, x-ray and pharmacy services. Grants, corporate and individual donations have helped to provide care to the uninsured and underinsured in this community.

• FLIGHT FOR LIFE COLORADO provided immediate life-saving care and transport for over 4,000 patients this past year. In FY2012, Foundation funds purchased a portable monitor/defibrillator and IV pump for Lifeguard 3, the helicopter based at St. Francis Medical Center.

• PENROSE-ST. FRANCIS MISSION OUTREACH partnered with UCCS, Walgreens and other local agencies to increase flu vaccinations to the underserved in our community. Grant funding helped to provide fourteen immunization clinics at safety-net locations, churches, and neighborhood community centers, providing nearly 700 vaccinations.

• COMMUNITY HEALTH COLLABORATION continued as Penrose-St. Francis joined with other area health care providers in forming a Regional Care Collaborative Organization (RCCO). During its first year, this pilot project enrolled 19,000 local Medicaid patients, working to provide them with better care, better health and lower costs. PSFHF supported the RCCO’s contract manager position during the start-up and first year of the pilot project.

• Penrose Rehabilitation’s FITNESS TO DRIVE PROGRAM, in its second year, continued helping drivers impaired by injury, illness or aging to stay on the road safely. PSFHF funding provided staff support and education, and purchased needed equipment. Grants received from the Grace Fund, Inasmuch Foundation, and Luther T. McCauley Trust provided scholarships for participants who would otherwise have been unable to afford these services.

• JOHN ZAY GUEST HOUSE offers a “Home Away from Home” for out-of-town patients and family members of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. The guest house, named in memory of long-time cancer chaplain John Zay, provides over 4,000 nights of housing each year. Foundation funds purchased replacement furnishings and landscaping services to help keep this home a warm and inviting place for those in need.

• BREAST CANCER PATIENTS in financial need were assisted by grants received from the 2011 Hope Gala, Renee’s Friends Fund, Cowgirls & Cocktails, and Tough Enough To Wear Pink. More than 50 patients were provided breast screening and diagnostic services; help with co-insurance payments, and non-medical assistance with rent/living expenses, transportation, and breast prosthetics and supplies. These funds positively impact the lives of many women facing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

• THE PHARMACY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM at Penrose Hospital provided prescriptions to uninsured and underinsured patients who needed medications to make the transition from hospital to home. Donations from our associates and community provided nearly 200 patients with over 450 prescriptions.

• WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICES have expanded at Penrose-St. Francis, highlighted by the opening of the Breast Care Center and Center for Women’s Imaging at the Penrose Pavilion in April 2012. PSFHF provided start-up funding to develop and implement programs and services for women with breast and other cancer diagnoses, and general women’s health programming.
