NOTES

Penny was always a fairly ordinary girl. She has a friendly face, people seem to trust her. She's also very bright; the sort of girl who was in the math & science clubs & on the school quiz bowl team. Penny is also surprisingly fit & she loves to play field hockey. The energetic, assertive world of hockey wouldn't immediately seem to suit the brainy girl, but she had a surprising affinity for not only the physicality of the sport, but also the aggressive tendencies the sport called for. It wasn't as though sherelished checking a girl out of the way to get her shot in, it's that she saw the practicality of action, the necessity of its place in the art of the game.

Penny's ordinary life has probably only 2 turns to the extraordinary. First, she was possessed by a spirit or demon at the age of 13. Second, she's a supernatural investigator. Penny, however, per her usual pragmatism, does not see these life events as extraordinary.

Penny's parents, Noble & Normal Balance, are both anthropologists, super-smart, sort of bourgeois bohemian types. Penny is their only child & they were devastated when she became ill. Her illness was sudden, intense, & difficult to diagnose. The illness, in addition to manifesting itself as any atypical possibly fatal illness (weight loss, fever, nausea, seizures,weakness) also caused dementia. Penny developed a sort of secondary personality. She would seem to get stronger, entering a frenzied state, both physically & verbally. She had to be restrained physically, so that she didn't harm herself or others during these states, but the verbal onslaught was one those around her couldn't escape.

Finally, Penny was diagnosed with a rare brain parasite she had picked up in South America while accompanying her parents during a research trip. As devastated as Penny's parents were with her illness, they were even more devastated with Penny's pronouncement that while ill, she had also been possessed by some sort of spirit or demon, while in her weakened state. Penny's parents, nor the band of psychiatrists, psychologist & therapists they sent her to, could convince her that this hadn't occurred. Penny insisted that she could feel the presence take over her body. It drained her of energy & her own spirit, pulling her into blackness. At times the entity spoke to her, taunted her. She could sense it's thoughts & feel it's motivations - it wanted physical from. When she was diagnosed & treated, she felt it's presence leave her, as her strength returned.

Her parents may not believe her, but she would prove to them that such things existed.
