Up to 75 percent of students change their academic plan and major at least once. At Penn State, most stu-dents select their majors in the spring semester of their sophomore year. If you come to Penn State Behrend as an undeclared major, you’ll be enrolled in the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). DUS’s academic and career counselors can help you gain insights into your unique interests and abilities and how they relate to the work world.

Every student enrolled in DUS works with an adviser to identify strengths and interests, and makes progress toward a degree before choosing a major.

You can learn more about the different majors Penn State has to offer and how they fit with your interests and life goals by visiting behrend.psu.edu/explore. Our online tools allow you to explore careers by researching job re-sponsibilities, employment outlook, salary, and advance-ment opportunities.

KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPENYou can request enrollment in the Division of Undergraduate Studies when you apply to Penn State Behrend, during your New Student Orientation, or by meeting with a DUS adviser af-ter classes begin. You may stay in DUS for up to two semesters beyond your first year at Penn State and move to a major when you are ready, as long as you’ve met the entry requirements.

ACADEMIC AND CAREER PLANNINGThe Academic and Career Planning Center (ACPC) offers advising and exploration resources that help you to develop a solid academic plan and prepare for life after college.

New Student OrientationNew Student Orientation is an on-campus event that will fa-miliarize you with the wide range of degree programs avail-able at Penn State, explain Penn State’s scheduling process, and help you to select your first-semester courses.

Right now, you may not know what you want to major in. If so, you’re not alone. Nearly three-quarters of all students entering college aren’t entirely certain about their choice of major.

Career CounselingThe ACPC has career counselors to help you explore your interests, abilities, and values in order to find potential majors and careers that are a good fit.

Internships and Co-opsAfter you decide on a career plan, the next step in the process is to add experience to that plan. The ACPC can help you research internships, co-ops, and part-time summer jobs related to your major.

Full-Time Job or Graduate School SearchEven as you’re gaining experience, you need to think about life after graduation. The ACPC can help you develop the skills necessary to find and apply for em-ployment and graduate school.

When I applied to Penn State Behrend, I had no idea what

I wanted to major in. Part of me wants to follow my passion for history and politics, but the other part wants to jump into the exciting world of business. I decided to start off in the Division of Undergraduate Studies and figure out the perfect major for me. To do that, I signed up for a First Year Seminar that focuses on the Penn State system and its different majors. I took a series of tests and quizzes to match careers and majors to my personality. I also talked about my interests with my seminar professor and academic adviser. I was nervous about the process, but the faculty members and DUS staff are really helpful and patient.
