CIS Achieve Academy helps
reach out to the Sandy Hook
Community!
On Thursday December 20th, 2012 a groupof students from the CIS A.C.H.I.E.V.E.Academy participated in a school-wideeffort in an act of sympathy for the citizensof the Sandy Hook community inNewtown, CT. The students, staff andadministration of William Penn filledminiature hands made from constructionpaper with heart-felt messages of encouragement, sympathy and condolences.Teachers sold the hands for a $1 to help raise funds that would also go towards
supporting families and those who have lost loved ones from the tragedy. Ourthoughts and prayers extend to the Sandy Hook Community!

CIS Holiday Break Bowling Part
The William Penn CIS staff kickedoff the holiday/winter break with aStrrrrrrike at the BowleramaLanes in New Castle, DE onThursday Dec. 20th, 2012. Therewere a total of 5 lanes, all filledwith students waiting with red andwhite bowling pins in their eyes to
try their skill! This one of twosocial events coordinated by theWPHS CIS Staff to say enjoy yourwinter break to volunteers, as wellas students.
CIS Holiday Break 76ers GameFriday December 21st @ The Wells Fargo
Center
The CIS staff held its second of twosocial functions at the Wells FargoArena in Philadelphia, PA with agood ole basketball match-upbetween the Atlanta Hawks and the76ers. More than 20 studentspacked into seats to witness thegame. CIS at William Penn HighSchool were recognized duringhalftime on the message board.
CIS Delaware Holiday Party
CIS Delaware held their annual holiday party at the WashingtStreet Ale House located in Wilmington, DE on Tuesday Dec18th, 2012. This was a great time for the staff to come togetheand celebrate during a very busy winter season. Thank you CDelaware for hosting a great thank you for your staff!

CIS hosts A Teenage Love:The Stageplay
Written & Directed by Aaron L. Wright
"A Teenage Love" is a creative, entertaining, educationaland captivating artistic experience. The students of WilliPenn High School absolutely loved the play and couldn't stalking about it from the moment the play ended to thefollowing weeks of school. Parents, teachers, administrat
and staff all enjoyed the professional, positive, and well-organized delivery of the production. CIS had the pleasurof hosting the play on two days Friday Dec. 7th andSaturday Dec. 8thone of our very own CIS alum; NajeeConner now stars as one of the lead actors in the play. In
addition to acting, Najee is a musical artist and attends the Art Institute ofPhiladelphia full-time. Thank you to all the staff, custodians, volunteers and plaparticipants who helped to make this event a huge success.
CIS Coat DriveSet to End MLK Day - Jan 21st
CIS launched its coat drive to help benefit the Delaware Clothing Bank onDecember 4th, 2012. The response has been absolutely amazing. Teachers, studand community members have been extremely generous in their giving! A specithank you to the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. who collected morethan 3 trash bags of coats to donate to the CIS William Penn effort! Keep up thegreat service!!!

COLLEGE ON-TRACK PROGRAM
On December 7, 2012 Communities
In Schools students from McKean
High School and William Penn High
School graduated from the On Track
program at Delaware Technical &
Community College. Juniors
completed On Track 1: A College
and Life Skills Course and seniors
completed On Track 3: MasteringCollege Life.,
both one college credit courses. Thecourses gave students the
opportunity to learn about financial
aid counseling, SEED and scholarshipinformation, and the importance of acollege education. Students wereguided through the admissionsprocess and were administered theCollege Placement Test for Del Tech.A luncheon and ceremony took place to award students with certificates ofachievement and gift bags. Community members, high school staff andrepresentatives from local businesses were on hand to celebrate the students harwork and diligence.

Student Spotlight
Elijah Harris
Elijah Harris is a first year cohort student, but by no means is he unfamiliar withCommunities in Schools. Elijah participated in the Gentlemans Club from 20112012 and the Jefferson Awards/Students In Action Committee, both of whichoperated through CIS collaborations. Prior to this year, Elijah had never receivegrade point average higher than a 2.0, however for his first marking period gradehe achieved a 2.5 grade point average. He is a promising junior and is lookingforward to his senior year next year; he certainly has a bright future ahead of him

We are recognizing Ms. Brandy this month for her excellent leadership skills inPearls of Wisdom. She has been a positive role model in the lives of the youn
women she has mentored over the past year. Ms. Brandy has volunteeredher Wednesday afternoons to teach young female students valuable life lessons t
will hopefully be instilled in them once the program is complete. We show gregratitude for Ms. Brandys attendance and positive attitude toward the program
She is one of the important pieces that keep the pearls grounded. The young ladlook forward to many more sessions with Ms. Brandy filled with thought provok
conversations , good laughs ,and constructive criticism. With that being said wwould like to honor Ms. Brandy Rodgers with this award .

Be a CIS Volunteer:YOU can make an impact!!
The following opportunities are available for community members, parents, etc.:
Lunch Time Mentoring- Eat lunch once a week with a student. Sharinggood conversation with friends over a meal is something we all love.
Lunches are in 30 minute segments. Which lunch schedule works best fo
you? Lunch A 11:00-11:30 Lunch B 11:30-12:00 Lunch C 12:00-12:30
After-school Tutoring- Many students just need that one-on-one attentiofor their ah-ha moment. Students could benefit from your help with
completing homework and/or class assignments, gaining confidence in
reading or math, and basic tutoring. Students can work with you one-on-
or in small groups.
Career Speakers- Come tell us your professional and personal journey.Many times success seems like a distant dream instead of an attainable
reality. Sharing your journey helps put things into perspective for ourstudents.
