Arthurs Seat chairlift off to SABY SAMANTHA ROBIN

End of an era: The first pieces of the Arthurs Seat chairlift are removed by crane. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

LAST week was the end of an era for theArthurs Seat chairlift, with cranes removingthe first pieces of the iconic structure.

While reluctant to reveal his final plans forthe chairlift, owner Richard Hudson said hewas negotiating with authorities in South Aus-tralia to set the chairlift up again as a tourismattraction — ‘‘we are looking at a number ofdifferent sites’’.

While it was a sad moment for Mr Hudsonto see the chairlift removed from its perch atthe summit of Arthurs Seat, he was excitedabout the new venture.

‘‘We are looking at places that boast a steadystream of tourists year-round so it may workout to be an even better success,’’ he said.

Mr Hudson plans to set the chairlift up him-self and has an offsider who has agreed to helprun it.

‘‘It will be shipped interstate where it willremain in a workshop until we gain all thenecessary approvals.’’

The chairlift had a checkered history at itscurrent site, including a pylon collapse andpartial derailment before it was shut down in2006.

‘‘We are taking virtually a brand new chair-lift off the site,’’ Mr Hudson said of the lift, which has had all eight pylons replaced since apylon collapsed in 2003.

The removal paves the way for the newchairlift, to be constructed by Arthurs SeatConsortium.

Demolition of the historic Arthurs Seatlookout tower in September last year, due toconcrete cancer, provided a clean slate for thenew development.

Consortium chairman Simon McKeon saidrevised plans being worked on were a dramaticimprovement on the ones originally submitted.

‘‘With the removal of the old chairlift anddemolition of the tower, we have a much betterland envelope to work with.’’

Mr McKeon anticipated planning wouldcontinue for another 12 months before anyconstruction began. ‘‘It has been a long process

but there are a lot of approvals that need to besigned off.’’

The new chairlift will be based on a glassed-in, gondola model that will be built overseas.

‘‘The gondolas cost a lot more money thanwhat was first anticipated but it will be worthit,’’ Mr McKeon said.

‘‘It really will become a tourism offering ofnational significance.’’

While it was too early to set a date on whenthe chairlift would be up and running, it wasexpected to be at least another two years.

‘‘We are not under any pressure to get itdone quickly, we would rather create some-thing really special,’’ Mr McKeon said.

The consortium has a 50-year lease of thesite.

Mr Hudson said he could not compete withthe consortium’s $14 million plan.

‘‘This chairlift is only worth $2 million,’’ he

said. ‘‘I don’t know how they will ever beable to recover their costs. I’m sure theyhave a competent team of people but as anengineer with 30 years’ experience, wecouldn’t have offered the things they are plan-ning to do.’’

The Arthurs Seat chairlift was a tourist iconon the Mornington Peninsula and is stillfeatured on some postcards and the DromanaPrimary School’s logo.

Even as contractors began removing thechairlift, tourists were asking when it wasgoing to be reopened.

The gearbox and surrounding frame werethe first to be removed last week.

In a fortnight, the road up to Arthurs Seatwill be closed to traffic while the main cablesare taken off the machinery.

The pylons will be removed and all buildingson the site demolished.

Re: Shire to appeal swamp rulingMornington Peninsula Shire Council’s attack onratepayer Cameron Brown is absolutely gobsmacking — all he was doing is what the shire, asthe responsible authority, is required to do underthe law. eviscerate him at ratepayers’ expense.Ken Dyer (via web)

Re: Eyesore takes shapeWhen a suburban-style pergola recently appearedon the edge of the community forest at The Briars, Iwrote to all councillors and Briars manager SteveYorke to ask why. As David Ball’s letter (Weekly,13/3/13) attests, the structure is neither wanted orneeded and is a blight on the rural landscape. MrYorke explained the pergola did not require a plan-ning permit and was signed off by ex-councillorReade Smith. The Rotary Club of Morningtoninstalled the pergola to honour the success of thelease-free usage of the forest and also to provideshelter and a meeting point for Balcombe GrammarSchool students who, sometime in the future, willbe pulling out all non-indigenous plants in theforest and replacing them with indigenous ones.

This inappropriate pergola sits adjacent tobushland for the use of a private school that isliterally across the road —all with no communityconsultation. It is painted pale yellow and lookslike it belongs in somebody’s backyard. The shirehas succeeded in dumbing down the natural bushthat attracts people there in the first place. Pull it

down and relocate it. Stop messing with the bush.Ann Scally, Mt Martha

As a Rotarian, I was disappointed to read DavidBall’s concern over the small gazebo constructed bythe Rotary Club of Mornington near the entranceto The Briars’ forest, an area was planted withmore than 3500 trees by Rotary and the com-munity from 1985-93.

The gazebo, in heritage colours, will serve as aresting place following a walk, a shelter from sun orrain or a place to wait for walking partners toarrive. The gazebo was planned with the guidanceand support of the Briars rangers and MorningtonPeninsula Council who have also supported thethree other gazebos built by Mornington Rotaryfor our community.

Our Rotary club is a responsible environmentalcitizen and has done much to develop and promotethe public use of The Briars and its forest area. Inrecent weeks, the views expressed to our volunteerpainters by the many walkers in the forest havebeen most positive in regard to this facility. Weremain confident that this small shelter, sensitivelyplaced, will be a valued addition to this forest area.

Old quarry may beused for landfill

Critical need: Vince Latham and Peninsula Waste Development’s development officer David Maltby at theArthurs Seat quarry site. Picture: Daryl Gordon

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN

THE old Pioneer Quarry at Arthurs Seat hasbeen earmarked as a much-needed landfill siteand could be operating within two years.

Peninsula Waste Management is lodging planswith the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council togain approval to use the site for municipal wastedumping.

If the application succeeds, the site wouldreplace the Rye landfill, which is nearingcapacity. The new landfill would predominantlyservice the Mornington Peninsula, and possiblyFrankston and Casey. It would not act as a trans-fer station for individual rubbish dumping.

The council’s regional waste management planalready recognises the former quarry as a pre-ferred landfill location. Set just off BoundaryRoad, the site is four kilometres from the mainprecinct of Arthurs Seat.

RE Ross Trust has owned the land since 1998and always envisioned it as an eventuallandfill site. Peninsula Waste Management wasset up by the trust, which was established in

1970 in honour of the late Roy Everard Ross. The company has already conducted a small

meeting last month with some of the nearby res-idents, some of whom have expressed concernabout the land being used for waste.

A host of works would be required to get thesite to the operational stage, including draining asignificant amount of water.

Peninsula Waste Management chief executiveofficer Vince Latham told the Weekly he wasconfident the planing application would meet allEPA and council requirements.

‘‘There is a critical need for another municipalwaste site on the Mornington Peninsula. This isthe only site on the eastern side of Melbournethat would meet all of the EPA requirements.’’

A community reference group has been set upto field queries from nearby residents.

Seawinds Ward councillor Graham Pittocksaid some nearby residents had expressed con-cerns over the prospect of a landfill.

‘‘In my opinion, it will impact on Dromanamore than any other town. If it does go ahead, itwould be good to see the company invest some

money back into the local community and infra-structure in the town.’’

Cr Pittock said it was crucial for the council tofind another municipal waste site. ‘‘If we don’tfind another site soon, we will be trucking it tothe other side of Melbourne, which residents willbe slugged with in their rates.’’

All profits from the landfill site would be dis-

tributed to charities and organisations on theMornington Peninsula and throughout Victoriaunder the direction of the RE Ross Trust, whichhas contributed more than $80 million to localand Victorian charities.

Hospital awaitsnews on fundingBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

PENINSULA Health has not yet received anyformal notification of federal governmentchanges to hospital funding in Victoriaannounced last week and 10 Frankston Hos-pital short-stay beds will remain closed untilafter Easter as planned.

The federal government announced thata planned $107 million funding cut toVictorian hospitals had been reversed, afterinitially saying the cut reflected Victoria’spopulation not having grown as much asexpected.

On Thursday, federal Health MinisterTanya Plibersek announced what the Gillardgovernment is calling a ‘‘rescue package’’ forVictorian hospitals. The cash injection willbe paid directly to local hospital networks, which will distribute the money to hospitalsand will be taken from other Commonwealthfunding allocations to the state government.

‘‘The rescue package will not pass throughthe hands of the Baillieu government which

has proven itself to be a cruel and incompet-ent manager of the Victorian health system,’’Ms Plibersek said.

Premier Ted Baillieu said the fundingmeasures were a stopgap and still left $368million in cuts over three years.

‘‘Victorians have never believed or accep-ted the Commonwealth government’s pur-ported reasons for these cuts,’’ he said.

‘‘There was never any justifiable reason forthe imposition of these cuts. The funding forthe full period of the agreement should bereinstated.’’

Peninsula Health spokesman John Jukessaid last Friday he had not yet received anyformal notification on the funding changesand 10 Frankston Hospital short-stay bedswould remain closed until after Easter asplanned. There was also no guarantee onwhat would happen after the next budget.

‘‘The minister has said it is a one-off refundso we are not sure where that leaves us.

‘‘We don’t know if that means they willexpect savings in the next budget.’’

Aged-care centre ‘may close’BY LEE OPITZ

Cloudy future: Mt Martha Valley Lodge.

THE Mt Martha Valley Lodge aged-carecentre may be closed after administrators wereappointed last week, a resident’s family says.

John Morris, whose mother-in-law has beena resident for 12 months, said families and res-idents who attended a meeting at the SafetyBeach centre last Monday week were told bymanager Brendan Wood and a Department ofHealth and Ageing representative that the cen-tre’s two directors had resigned and that MrWood had stepped up to the role.

They were told the centre had been placedin the hands of administrators. The worst-casescenario would be to close and the best, to finda new owner.

‘‘We were advised to ‘wait and see’ whatoptions are available after administrators havegone through the books,’’ Mr Morris, ofTyabb, said. ‘‘Like most people there, we don’thave much choice until they sort out the bondissue. We have been informed that it takesabout 14 days after the company winds upbefore we get our bonds back, but we have noproof that our bonds are guaranteed.’’

A department spokeswoman confirmed anadministrator has been appointed over

Nepean Hospitals Pty Ltd which operates thetwo services, Mount Martha Valley LodgeHostel at Safety Beach and Alexandra Houseat Bendigo. The Mt Martha centre is part ofthe Cambridge Aged Care Group. She said theadministrator, Grant Thornton, was respons-ible for ensuring the future of the companyand high-quality care for the residents.

‘‘In the event that the administrator deter-mines that the services have to close, they willbe responsible for the relocation of residents.’’

Mr Morris said the family would prefer thathis mother-in-law, who is in low-care accom-modation, remained at the home where shehad made friends and was happy. He praised

Mr Wood for stepping up as director, but criti-cised the department representative for givinglittle information or assurance about the resid-ents’ future.

On February 20, the Weekly reported thatCambridge was under investigation by theDepartment of Health and Ageing and theAustralian Federal Police. A departmentspokeswoman said the investigation related to‘‘serious concerns about the conduct and qual-ity of care’’ at its centres and that the AgedCare Standards and Accreditation Agency hadmonitored Cambridge’s services for a year.

Following investigations in January, theSafety Beach home was accredited for another12 months, but prohibited from chargingaccommodation bonds until June 11 this year.

Mr Wood and the administrator did notrespond to the Weekly’s requests for comment.

A search of current vacancies last weekshowed there were just 12 beds available atfive aged-care facilities on the MorningtonPeninsula.

Flinders federal MP Greg Hunt said lastweek the overwhelming priority was to ensurethe ongoing care and welfare of residentsand to ensure their financial resources wereprotected.

Push to save‘sick’ pier

Terminal illness: The Dromana pier has beendiagnosed with concrete cancer which needs tobe addressed.

BY LEE OPITZ

ALMOST 1000 Dromana residents are sup-porting a campaign to replace the town’siconic pier after investigations showed it wasstarting to fall apart.

The Save the Dromana Pier campaign waslaunched by the Association for BuildingCommunity in Dromana after it was foundthe 60-year-old, 185-metre-long pier wassuffering the effects of concrete cancer, a con-dition in which the base crumbles whenwater seeps through concrete footings andrusts internal steel work.

Association president Bob Donaldson saidthere were two options to save the pier —repair or replace it. Identifying which pylonson the pier had cancer and treating and repla-cing the steel inside may give the pier an extra10 or 15 years, but it would inevitably needto be demolished, he said.

‘‘It would be better if the pier was replacedaltogether and give it 50 years, but Parks Vic-toria says there are no funds available and ithas other priorities like the Mornington andSt Kilda piers.’’

A Parks Victoria spokesman said the

authority regularly assessed the condition ofmaritime structures using professional engin-eers and divers and would continue to mon-itor the Dromana pier.

‘‘The most recent draft technical inspec-tion was June 2011 which estimated the pierhad another 10 years of life. It is still struc-turally sound for current usage.’’

Nevertheless, Mr Donaldson said localcommunity groups including the ABCD hadbanded together to create the Save the Dro-mana Pier committee. ‘‘Our aim is to havethe demolition of the existing pier and con-struction of the new pier.’’

Young veteransget their own hub

Launch day: Brent Clyne and Peter Erdman (front) with veterans, volunteers and veterans affairsrepresentatives Mathew Taylor, Chris Longley, Mark Kinder, Karl Williams and Ian Johnson. Picture: Daryl Gordon

BY ALECIA PINNER

A DREAM came true for the veteran communitylast Friday when the Young Veterans and Famil-ies Wellbeing Centre opened in Frankston.

The centre in Skye Road is the first of its kindin the country and will cater to the social, finan-cial and health needs of post-1975 veterans, including those from across the Mornington Pen-insula.

Young Veterans liaison officer Peter Erdman, who has worked on the project with RSL presi-dent Brent Clyne, told the Weekly he was hum-bled that the centre had come to fruition andwould help veterans and their families.

‘‘It has taken a lot of input and hours fromvolunteers and the RSL to get it up and running. When you get out of the defence force, whateverthe circumstances, you always need help, whether it is acute psychiatry or thinking aboutwhat you are going to do with the rest of yourlife.’’

Karl Williams was injured during service and isvolunteering at the centre as part of a TAFE

community development course. He said it wasgreat that the centre catered for the partners andchildren of those who had served. ‘‘The militaryturns you on but it doesn’t turn you off,’’ he said.

At the launch, federal Veterans Affairs MinisterWarren Snowdon congratulated Mr Clyne on hishard work in getting the centre off the ground.

‘‘I’m really excited about this, interested in howwe connect with young veterans and how the RSLcan become more relevant,’’ he said.

‘‘The work being done here is an example forwhat can be done across the country. We’re verykeen to see this sort of development taking place,so we get better outcomes for the young veteransand don’t repeat the mistakes.’’

Mr Snowdon said about 45,000 Australianswill have served in the Middle East by the time themilitary leave Afghanistan.

‘‘This is about the same number as Vietnam. Isee this centre as a crucial point of traction. I reallyworry about the young men and women whocome back from Afghanistan and think they’rebullet proof, and have been, and then after sometime they have problems.’’

Roped off: Signs prohibiting swimming and other water-based activities atMothers Beach in Mornington. Picture: Samantha Robin

Algae closes Mothers BeachBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

MOTHERS Beach in Morningtonwas closed on Friday due to thepresence of two algae species thatare harmful to humans and anim-als.

A routine sample by theDepartment of Sustainability andEnvironment last week foundhigh levels of two naturally occur-ring algae species, the oscillatoriaand lyngbya.

Signs were placed on the beachnotifying people that swimmingand other water-based were pro-hibited until further notice.

Animals were also banned fromthe beach as harmful algae may bepresent on the sand or in thewater.

Most of the algal blooms inPort Phillip Bay do not affect fishbut as a precaution anglers areadvised not to eat fish or shellfishcaught in the Mothers Beach areauntil further sampling is under-taken.

Anglers are advised not to eatfish that look unhealthy, havelesions or are found dead.

Seafood sold commercially isnot a risk due to comprehensivetesting and stringent food safety.Department of Sustainability andEnvironment compliance officerMichael Woods said marine algalblooms were more common dur-ing the warmer months.

“Blooms are a natural occur-rence and usually happen in sum-mer, persisting for a couple ofweeks,” he said.

“Marine algal blooms in thebay generally have no long-termhealth implications for humanswho come into contact with it butthe algae may cause skin and eyeirritations.

‘‘If water looks murky, sludgyor discoloured, we advise peopleto avoid contact with it.”

Mr Woods advised anyone whocame into contact with affectedwater to thoroughly wash the skinand clothing with clean water.

The beach was closed for theweekend and was reopened toswimmers on Monday afterMornington Peninsula Shireemployees deemed it safe. DSE

will continue to monitor thebeach and take samples for fur-ther testing.

Updates will be posted at dse.vic.gov.au.

Mornington Peninsula Shire

25.4 &':?Supreme Court todecide on swampBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

THE future of the Tootgarook swamp nowlies in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Mornington Peninsula Shire and landowner TJBP Pty Ltd were granted leave lastweek to appeal a decision handed down bythe Victorian Civil and AdministrativeTribunal in November.

The VCAT had ruled the shire inapp-ropriately approved a planning permit for a41-dwelling development at 85 ElizabethAvenue, Rosebud West.

The Supreme Court last week grantedleave to both parties to appeal the decision.

The issue will now go to a hearing nextmonth, when the shire and the landownerwill have to prove the tribunal made an errorin law.

The matter was originally taken to theVCAT under the name of Cameron Brown, but Save the Tootgarook Swamp Incorpor-ated will now be listed as the opponent to theproposed development.

Ashley Galvin, of Moreheads Lawers, who

is representing Tootgarook SwampIncorporated said he remained confident thetribunal had made the right decision.

‘‘It will be a very expensive exercise for theparties who aren’t successful at the SupremeCourt hearing.’’

Mr Galvin said his client objected to theshire and landowner seeking costs, andmaintained that the tribunal was correct inits original decision.

Swamp activist Jessica Durrant iscompleting a 10-day walk around the swampto raise money and awareness of the swamp’sdiverse ecosystem.

Ms Durrant, who is Mr Brown’s fiance, will walk around the perimeter of the swampfor 10 hours a day to bring attention to theneed to protect the swamp fromdevelopment.

Money raised from the walk will be putback into regenerating the wetlands, andnominating the wetlands for a RAMSARnomination.

Ms Durrant has set herself a goal of raising$10,000.

Charlie still motoring along

Nice ride: Charlie Schwerkolt in his auto museum.Picture: Daryl Gordon

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN

A passion for cars and the desire to do whathe loved led Charlie Schwerkolt to open hisown car museum almost 25 years ago.

What began with his own small car collection,as well as a few borrowed from family andfriends, now boasts more than 60 treasuredvehicles.

Mr Schwerkolt has loved cars since he was aboy and after handing over his business to his son25 years ago, bought land at Arthurs Seat and setup the museum.

Cars of every description line the walls andsurfaces in nearly every form imaginable. ‘‘This iswhat I love,’’ Mr Schwerkolt said.

He also has model cars and aeroplanes onshow and for sale.

‘‘We sell lots of those collectable things. Butnone of the cars are for sale. I’m holding on tothem.’’

While he claims not to have a favourite, onethat holds special memories for him is his 1954model Hudson — ‘‘it is the same model as thefirst car I ever had’’.

Charlie’s Auto Museum attracts visitors fromacross Melbourne and interstate and is undergo-

ing an expansion — to house more cars.Among his collection, are cars from movie sets

and stage shows as well as a few more unusualmodels. ‘‘I like the ones that are a bit different,’’Mr Schwerkolt said.

Charlie’s Auto Museum is at 175 PurvesRoad, Arthurs Seat, and is open seven daysa week from 10.30am-4pm. Entry: adults$10, concession $8, children $5.Phone: 5989 6320.

FEATURESTORY

Texting drivers: r u crazy? It’s inter-connected oblivion. More andmore people are being caught using theirmobile phones or texting while driving. Itcosts them a $282 fine. Sometimes itcosts them — and others — their lives.CHAD VAN ESTROP and SANDRA BULLreport.

Bad call: Sergeants Dave Collins (left) and Peter Martin with a wrecked car that police suspect was hit by a driver who ran a red light while on the phone. Picture: Gary Sissons

Campaigner: Richard Lee was turned into aparaplegic after a driver talking on a mobile phoneploughed into his car. Picture: Craig Sillitoe/The Age

Richard Lee’s job is measuring people fortheir new wheelchairs. Some of them cometo him after diving accidents or falls and

others as a result of car crashes. And a few of that last group come to him

because the person who caused the crash thatcrippled them was talking on a mobile phone ortexting at the time.

Mr Lee can put himself in their place. Tenyears ago he was in a line of slow-moving trafficon a curve on Templestowe Road, Bulleen. Afour-wheel-drive coming in the other directionfailed to take the curve and ploughed into him.Its driver wasn’t looking, too busy chatting on hisphone. He turned Mr Lee into a paraplegic.

So he can honestly tell those clients he knowsexactly how they feel. But recently a man cameshopping for a wheelchair and left Mr Lee lostfor words. He admitted that he had been drivingwhile using his phone, oblivious and distracted, and it cost him the use of his legs.

‘‘He’s the only one I ever had who admitted tothat,’’ says Mr Lee. ‘‘And you have to bite yourtongue really. You might pass a comment like‘Well, that was a bit foolish, wasn’t it’ — hugeunderstatement. But really, what can you say?’’

Mr Lee is not usually so backward in comingforward. When he pulls up beside other driversand sees them chatting on their mobiles — or,worse, texting — he winds down his window andgives them a spray. If they don’t get the messagehe points to his wheelchair on the seat besidehim.

Not that it does much good, he admits. Everyweek more than 1100 drivers are pulled up bypolice and charged with illegal phone use. Duringthe most-recent police safety blitz — SummerStay, which ran from mid-November to January7 — 6077 motorists were charged with mobilephone offences. They face a $282 fine and loss ofthree demerit points.

And worse. Some face a meeting with someonelike Mr Lee, to be measured for a new seat ofwheels: ‘‘Unfortunately, it appears mobiles areincreasingly going to become a much more com-mon cause of serious injury on our roads,’’ hesays. ‘‘And, of course, death.’’

For years, a series of studies has shown thedangers of mixing mobile phones and cars. ABritish study in 2002 found using a hand-heldmobile while driving was more dangerous thandriving with a blood-alcohol content of .08.Reaction time was 30 per cent slower than some-one with that level of alcohol and twice as slowas a sober driver.

In 2009, a study in the US showed that diallinga mobile while driving increased the risk of acrash by almost three times. Simply talking onthe phone made the risk of a crash 1.3 times as

high. In heavy vehicles the risks multiply. A truckdriver dialling a number is six times more likelyto cause a crash as an undistracted driver.

Text messaging while driving is far worse. Itincreases the risk of a crash by 23.2 times, thestudy found. A simulator study by the MonashUniversity Accident Research Centre found text-ing drivers spent 400 per cent more driving timewith their eyes off the road.

Yet today the potential for drivers to be dis-tracted by such devices is at an all-time high, withsocial media, emails, texts and GPS technologyall available on smartphones.

Concerned by the growing potential for dis-aster, Frankston and peninsula police haveincreased road safety operations targeting mobilephone use.

Road policing analyst Leading Senior Con-stable Ross Randall, who number-crunchesstatistics for the Carrum Downs, Hastings andRosebud highway patrols, says a total of 1682penalty notices for using a mobile phone whiledriving were issued last year — 924 in the City ofFrankston and 758 across the peninsula.

Yet Leading Senior Constable Randall, Hast-ings highway patrol head Sergeant Dave Collinsand Rosebud highway patrol commander Ser-geant Peter Martin warn the number of driversrisking their lives — and others — by texting orchatting on our roads is much higher than thesefigures suggest.

Sergeant Collins says 35 drivers caught using aphone when their eyes should have been on the

road were pulled over in January by Hastingshighway patrol members — ‘‘they’re often detec-ted because they’re wandering over the road, they forget they lose their focus’’.

While people knew texting while driving wasdangerous, an ‘‘it hasn’t happened to me’’ atti-tude led them to discount the danger, he says.

‘‘If you don’t have a hands-free that’s workingcorrectly, don’t put the phone on.’’

Leading Senior Constable Randall, a 20-yearhighway patrol veteran based at the CarrumDowns police station, says drivers must realisethat if they flout road rules ‘‘they’re driving alethal weapon’’.

‘‘It only takes a split second and you’re off the

road and into a tree. Notifying families is a gut-wrenching job that every Victoria Police memberhates to do.

‘‘Selfishness on the road is such we could bedriving down the road toll even further if peoplehad some respect, not only for themselves but thecommunity as a whole.’’

Extra highway patrol shifts funded by theTransport Accident Commission in Decemberand January resulted in Rosebud crews notchingup 13,000 breath-tests and booking 71 driversfor mobile phone use.

Sergeant Martin, who lives in a south-easternsuburb, says he never fails to spot at least fourdrivers nattering away on their phones as hetravels to and from the Rosebud police stationeach day.

But while the ‘‘average punter’’ doesn’t own upto using a phone if not caught in the act, he saysmany a sneaky phone user has been nabbed atnight. ‘‘It’s amazing how the glare of a smartphone can be seen when people are holding itbelow window level. It’s an absolute giveaway.’’

Sergeant Martin vividly remembers going to adouble fatality a few years ago.

‘‘I was fairly sure it was [caused by] a phonecall and the coroner accepted the evidence that aphone played a part.

‘‘I’ve attended fatal accidents where peoplehave died as a result of mobile phone use — bothdrivers and passengers. They are all victims in theend as are the families and the emergency servicepersonnel who attend.’’

Mornington playertightens grip on comp

Star power: Mornington’s Jarryd Cathcartdefeated his more-fancied opponent on

Thursday night.

MORNINGTON’S Jarryd Cathcartstamped his authority on the Morn-ington Peninsula Table Tennis Associ-ation with a resounding victory overFrankston’s Sam Palmer on Thursdaynight.

In the action at the MorningtonTable Tennis club, Cathcart domin-ated his younger opponent from theoutset and the result never looked indoubt as he signalled his intention toreclaim the No. 1 ranking.

Cathcart’s partner Greg Price top-ped off a successful night for Morning-ton when he recorded his first win ofthe A1 summer pennant competition, with a 4-2 victory over club veteranGeoff Lloyd.

Mt Martha’s Sean O’Meara andGary Anderson remain winless aftergoing down 3-2 to Somerville, which

chalked up its first victory of the sea-son.

Although O’Meara was the formplayer of the night, winning both sing-les matches, it was Somerville’s ShaneO’Connor who provided the heroics. When with the match tied at two-all,he took the points against Anderson ina hard-fought decider.

In the remaining match of roundfive, it was Carrum Downs that werevictorious over Langwarrin.

Eighteen-year-old Luke Bronsema, another powerhouse of Morningtontable tennis, got Langwarrin off to aflyer with a 4-0 annihilation of the in-form Mark Flavel.

A 4-2 win over the wily Peter DuPlooy lifted his season record to sixwins from eight matches played thisseason.

But it was all downhill from therefor Langwarrin as Carrum Downssecured a 3-2 win to lift them tosecond place on the ladder.

Tyabb and Mornington share topspot on the A2 grade ladder withTyabb’s John Fedmowski ahead in theLeading Player standings with sevenwins. In what is proving to be a veryeven competition, Andre Keecher,Colin Sim, Derek Williams, JimFurness and Marco Baretta all have sixwins under their belt at the halfwaypoint of the season.

Peninsula the best by a mile as Country Week titles wonTHE Mornington Peninsula Cricket Associationis the king of country cricket.

Its representative teams claimed theMelbourne Country Week Provincial and divi-sion 3 titles, the senior outfit accounting for Sale-Maffra Cricket Association in the final at AlbertCricket Ground on Friday. The brilliant victorycame on the back of Darren Groves’ (2-36) andScott Phillips’ (4-35) heroics with the ball andthen a solid batting display.

SMCA was bowled out for 203, a total thatwas never going to be enough, with the MPCA’sstar power right down its batting list.

Justin Bridgeman (58) and Rob Hearn (44)laid the platform for the victory, putting on 83

for the first wicket. Daniel Warwick (59 not out)and Phillips (40 no) were at the crease when theMPCA passed SMCA’s total after a rare failurefrom Bobby Wilson (1).

‘‘It was awesome — the final was won duringthe week — we had three really tight wins whichcould have gone either way,’’ Hearn said.

‘‘The final was probably our easiest match ofthe week.’’

Hearn said a number of individual perform-ances had got the MPCA home in several closelyfought games. The availability of Rye coach andformer Premier Cricket star Groves was a hugeboon for the representative team.

‘‘Luke Popov bowled exceptionally well and

Matty Foon bowled and batted well,’’ Hearnsaid. ‘‘Justin Bridgeman is turning 41 this yearand in the last two games he was amazing — hemade a 90-odd and a 50 in the final.

‘‘Having Darren Groves and Scotty Phillipsand guys like that who are all former Premiergrade cricketers really helps.’’

MPCA general manager Paul Pelzer said thewin showed the strength of the competition andsaid it was a credit to the players who hadcommitted to the week-long contest.

‘‘It’s a great result for the MPCA after we fin-ished towards the bottom last year. It’s a greateffort from the boys to win the premiership andto only get through by five runs on the Thursday.

‘‘Last year we had some guys who weren’tavailable and this year we managed to gettogether a reasonable squad together and thathelped us.’’

Pelzer also praised the MPCA second team fortaking out division 3 of Country Week with ahard-fought win over Goulburn Murray CricketAssociation. MPCA was dismissed for 121 in 32overs but managed to dismiss its more experi-enced opposition for 97 to secure a berth in divi-sion 2 next year. ‘‘All the team was under 23except for two players that we put in and theywere playing against senior cricketers from theGoulburn Murray — it’s a great effort,’’ Pelzersaid. — Brad McGrath

Oh Boy, it’s one more step to the finalsPENINSULA Old Boys moved a step closer toclinching a place in the MPCA Provincial Shieldfinals when it beat Moorooduc at PeninsulaSchool on Saturday.

After an up-and-down first half of the season, the Old Boys found themselves on the cusp ofmissing out on finals. But a series of triumphscoming after the mid-season break put them awin away from securing a place in the finals.

The first step was defeating the resilientMoorooduc, led by captain Bob Wilson, whogave Peninsula plenty of stick in a classy 85.

Moorooduc was chasing 206 and had a lessthan ideal start, losing openers Liam Sheehan (0)

and Shane Garlick (2) early on. Wilson stoppedthe slide, forming a brief but productive partner-ship with Myles Cordeux and keeping his team inthe contest at tea.

After the break, the Old Boys got back ontrack with club president and all-rounder JohnForrest taking the wickets of Wilson andCordeux.

‘‘He [Wilson] is such a good player, so it was animportant wicket,’’ Forrest said. ‘‘We were luckyenough to get him out just after tea.’’

With Wilson and Cordeux back in the shedsthe Old Boys were able to clear the Moorooductail with little resistance. The Peninsula attack

was at its most efficient, sharing the load, withForrest taking two wickets and Adam Jones andZac Fillipone both taking three wickets apiece.

The win was soured with opening batsmanCallum Savio breaking his hand, drawing thecurtains on his season.

The Old Boys are set to regain batsmen EivionBowen and Adam Gailitis, who will add plenty ofpolish and experience into the first XI.

Peninsula takes on Mt Martha in its finalmatch of the season, Crib Point is nipping at Pen-insula’s heels for the same spot in finals, and willsquare off against Ballam Park.

In other Provincial Shield matches, Baxter had

an outright win over the struggling Ballam Park, the victory elevating them to second on the lad-der. Crib Point kept its finals hopes alive with aslender victory over Mt Eliza, Ricky Thompson(70) saving the Pies after a shaky start to theirinnings.

Heatherhill stunned Sorrento after making260 on the first day of play. Heatherhill was justas deadly on the attack, giving ladder leaders Sor-rento no quarter and bowling them out for 120.

Long Island crushed Rye by 123 runs. Morn-ington continued its winning ways and ended MtMartha’s slim chance of finals with a three-wicket win.

Run feast keepsEagles on their perch

SOMERVILLE has held onto its spotin the MPCA District Shield top fourby blowing Frankston YCW away intheir match at Somerville Reserve onSaturday.

The Eagles blasted 380 on their firstday of play against the young YCWoutfit.

Somerville president Peter Alp waspleased with the way his side handledthe match as they push towards finals.

‘‘We didn’t want to get ahead ofourselves and try and push for anoutright win,’’ Alp said.

‘‘It was about getting the runs on theboard so we could secure the winearly.’’

Somerville is locked in a battle withBaden Powell and Delacombe Park. All three sides are trying to grab aplace in the finals, percentage the onlything separating them.

Frankston YCW battled hard earlywith their youthful top order showingplenty of class. Jason Tucker (23) andJack Greenwood (39) got the

Stonecats off to the right start.‘‘They are a team of kids and they

have a really bright future downthere,’’ Alp said. ‘‘They certainly haveplenty to look forward to.’’

The top order gave a strong show-ing with batsman Stephen Wortonproviding plenty of spark to make 50not out. Keeper Kip Mulgrove chippedin with 38.

Once the top order was down theSomerville attack had no troubleremoving the Frankston YCW tail. The visitors finished the afternoon on180.

Somerville shared the bowling loadaround. Russell Wilkes took threewickets from his 17 overs and JackKennedy also had the same haul.

On Saturday Somerville marks its120th anniversary with celebrations atthe Frankston RSL after their one-daymatch against Seaford. Somerville willunveil their greatest team of the past50 years, selected by a panel led byMPCA legend Bill McMahon.

In other Sub District Shield matches,Baden Powell kept its finals hopesalive, defeating Seaford but falling justshort of an outright victory.

Hastings upset top side Langwarrinto bring themselves back into the hunt

for finals. Carrum easily accounted forMain Ridge with a six-wicket win.

Pines defended its 280 with littleresistance coming from Boneo.

Flinders defeated Delacombe Parkby eight runs.

The loss came at the wrong time forthe Devils. Saturday’s clash againstBaden Powell is now a do-or-die situ-ation for both teams.
