By Senior Airman Jason J. Brown633RD AIR BASE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS
In an era of uncertainty, riddled with bleak economic forecasts and looming cuts to defense spending, the spirit of giving is alive and well in Langley Air Force Base’s First Sergeant’s Council.
The council rolled out its annual Operation Warm Heart food drive in November, a program that provides complete Thanksgiving dinners to eli-gible junior enlisted Airmen and their families during the holiday season.
More than 300 volunteers from across the installation dedicated time to col-lecting food and monetary donations, organizing and packing baskets, and delivering the bundles to families.
According to Master Sgt. Ryan Mc-Cauley, 633rd Air Base Wing Staff Agencies first sergeant, volunteers manned a table at the entrance of the Langley commissary to collect dona-tions. Throughout the store, a vari-ety of food items, including stuffing, pie and cornbread mix among other
Thanksgiving staples, were marked with tags denoting them as needed items for OWH baskets. Patrons could purchase these items and donate them immediately at the store entrance.
Alternatively, patrons had the op-tion of donating money in lieu of list-ed goods. At the end of the donation period, volunteers used the collect-ed funds to purchase the remaining goods required to assemble balanced, complete Thanksgiving baskets.
Master Sgt. Kelly Moose, 1st Air-craft Maintenance Squadron first ser-geant, said the council hopes to dis-tribute 500 baskets annually, having delivered 505 in 2010.
McCauley said first sergeants co-ordinate with supervisors to identify Airmen that would benefit most from the baskets.
“It’s not that these Airmen are ‘needy,’ but these baskets will make their holiday a little bit easier, allowing them to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal,” he explained, “whereas they would’ve trimmed off sides, perhaps not even having a turkey, or even going out to eat. We want to provide this meal for those where making a Thanksgiving dinner may not have been in the bud-get.”

“It makes an impact. It reminds our Airmen that people are looking out for them. ... This is a way to say ‘we know what you go through all year long and were thinking about you this holiday season.”

SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS AND HELPING THE FAMILIES THEY LEAVE BEHIND.
The Voice of a Military
Family in Crisis
“My husband just deployed for duty to Iraq. Because
of an error in the pay system, we will only receive
$62.00 in his end-of-the-month paycheck. Our only
car needs brakes and my husband didn’t have a
chance to take care of it at the auto center on base
before he deployed. He usually does all the work
on the car. I don’t know how I’m going to pay our
bills and buy groceries for my kids. Our rent is due
in three days and my paycheck is barely enough to
cover the daycare cost, our utilities and phone bill.
We tried getting a loan on post but we already have
one we’re paying back for emergency travel last
year when my Mom died. Can you help us?”
US Navy E-4 JoshuaDeployed at sea, Joshua worried about his wife when their only vehicle was wrecked in an accident during a snowstorm. Insurance would not cover all of the neces-sary repairs because the family had reduced coverage trying to save money to feed their family and make ex-penses. Unable to open the driver’s side door or raise the hood to jump the vehicle for towing, it was impossi-ble for Joshua’s wife to drive the vehicle. After requiring that full vehicle coverage be in place before assistance could be provided, Operation Homefront approved the vehicle repairs while Joshua’s wife underwent knee surgery. When she was able to operate the vehicle once again, Joshua’s wife returned to Operation Homefront and the vehicle was made road ready and safe leaving the cosmetic repairs for the family to handle.
