Term 4 Week 8

6 December, 2019

Year 10 Luna Park

Maths Excursion.

Too much fun!

YEAR 10 AND YEAR 8 SEMESTER TWO REPORTS

Congratulations to Year 10 and Year 8, who will receive their final 2019 report early next week.

In a rather hectic end to the year which will see all juniors receive their reports within a five-day

period, Year 10 will receive their school report and participate in a report Presentation and

individual interview on December 12 and Year 8 on December 9.

This reporting, interview and goal setting process allows us to tailor a non-judgemental learning

plan specific to the individual student while assisting them in setting realistic goals in a caring

and supportive environment.

In an attempt to spread the workload and give each year group their deserved time in the

spotlight I will subsequently report on Year’s 7 and 9 Semester Two results in next week’s

Peninsula Press.

The Final Reports for the 121 Year 10 students, with a mean Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 were very pleasing with a number of individual highlights.

25 students received a GOLD Principal’s Award by achieving a GPA of 4.2 or above.

32 students received a SILVER Principal’s Award by achieving a GPA of 3.7 or above.

40 students received a REC (Respect, Effort, Challenge) award by having 100% of their profile

as Always or Usually participating in their learning.

20 Limited Grades only, out of 862 individual reports (2.3%), this is a very pleasing result, once

again supporting the fact that almost all students are working well.

8 students received a ACADEMIC PROGRESS Award for advancing their GPA by 0.4 from

Semester One to Semester Two

BAND CAMP - A selection from our nightly "Band Blog"

Over the next few days, we performed at several primary

schools including Greenwell Point PS, Terara PS and Nowra

East PS. We also visited Jamberoo, and had many fun

evenings of trivia and talent shows. Thanks must be given

to Josh Hughes our conductor, Guy Hawson for supervising

and Jonathan Cramer our parent representative.

Thanks also to Yvonne Brown for helping organise the tourwith me, with such a fun experience for all involved.

"DAY 1 - We arrived in Kiama at around 11, and were

pleasantly confronted with a market which entertained kids

for an hour or so. We got to experience some pretty funky

blues, being serenaded by two toothless bearded dudes.

We set up in the shadow of the blowhole and awaited the

arrival of the Peloton (The Mental Wheels Bike Tour).

Upon arrival The Band roared into life with a crescendo of

You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray feat Christopher

Walken and Michelle Pfieffer. Rapturous applause from the

cyclists caused the majority of them to fall off! The Band

was greatly received by all viewers whilst Jonathon Cramer

commandeered a golf buggy and did wheelies in the parking

lot. The event lasted until around 4, and we then headed

into the mountains to our accommodation at Kaloona."

Carla van der WallenMusic Teacher

Will Vallis has received a Silver Award in the

National History Challenge for his essay entitled:

"To what extent did civil rights movements around

the world influence the creation and

success of the 1967 Referendum?"

Will's essay was selected at a regional level to

compete against other leading essays from

senior students across the State. Although he

was not chosen as a state winner, Will's work

was Highly Commended by the judges for the

depth of research and historical scholarship.

Congratulations Will!

Will was presented with his prize by the HSIE

Faculty, and is pictured with his Modern Historyteacher Ms Blackman.

RAISE FOUNDATION

VOLUNTEER MENTORS NEEDED FOR 2020

Raise Foundation, a not-for-profit mentoring

organisation, is urgently recruiting volunteers from

our local community to become a mentor for

students in our school, and other local high

schools. The programs run from March through to

September for two hours per week. Raise

measures the impact of its mentoring programs

and statistically significant outcomes include

increased confidence and resilience, ability to set

goals, coping skills, hope for the future and asking

trusted adults for help. Raise Mentors also benefit

by contributing to the community, gaining

improved listening and parenting skills through

free mentor training, and connecting with the

younger generation.

Head to www.raise.org.au/volunteer to sign up

or get more information

Could you, or someone you know, volunteer your time to mentor in a local high school in 2020?

Parents are invited to this must see presentation by Paul Dillon. Paul has been working in the

area of drug education for more than 25 years. Using the most recent data available, Paul will

examine the use of alcohol and other drugs by school-based young people. There will be a

close examination of the positive influence that parents can have on their child's drinking

behaviour, as well as the barriers that they may face during adolescence. The presentation

aims to empower parents with a positive message and assist them in having open and honest

family discussions in this complex area. Bookings are essential.

ECOJOEY

SUSTAINABILITY AT BARRENJOEY

This week in Ecojoey we talked about fundraising

opportunities to go towards the recycling bins

project. There is still quite a lot of days for

fundraising opportunities.

Every year, year 12 donates a gift to the school. This

year’s gift is putting money towards the recycling bin

project.

Hopefully before the end of term Ecojoey will be

running a Bake Sale to raise money to donate

towards helping the recovery of the animals and

bushland affected by the recent fires.

YEAR 10 MATHS – EXCURSION TO LUNA PARK!

Another year 10 cohort experienced a wonderful day of enjoyment and applied mathematics at Luna

Park last Monday. 94 students and six teachers boarded the buses at 8:30 for the trip south of the

Bends. We travelled to the Argyle Cut on the southern side of the Bridge and all enjoyed a pleasant

walk over the Harbour back to Luna Park.

The students were encouraged to enjoy the Park as did some of the teachers. Mr Grunseit went on

many of the rides to ensure they were all operating safely. It was a spectacular day with our

student’s showing exceptional respect and politeness on what was a busy day for Luna Park. It was

a great pleasure to be associated with them as they showed what a great school Barrenjoey is.

P & C REPORT DECEMBER 2019

2019 has been a great year for the P&C with funds being delivered to the school for all

levels of learners and experiences. The P&C has funded the art prize (purchasing Kiana

Flanet’s work, “Simple Matter” which is now on display in the foyer), the environment of the

School, the Junior and Senior Study, Learning Support and Accelerated Learning Programs.

The P&C also funded the new school video, Barrenjoey 365 which has now been enjoyed bymany families of the school.

Fundraising – It has been another

big year for events with the Full

Moon Market in September.

$9000+ approximately raised the

profile of the school was again

increased. The Market is designed

to showcase the school to the

Community and get the community

involved.

Special thanks to Claire Delaney and Di Cutrie for their awesome help in running the event along with a long list of volunteers without whom we couldn’t put this type of event on.

The Palm Beach Movie Night

in August was a fun way to raise

some money. Thanks to

everyone who helped make this

possible. We raised $3,000

which went directly towardshelping students at the school.

The Cookbook continues to be a slow burner with

approximately $7,000 raised this year. All efforts will

be made to move them early next year. Thank you to

Flavia and her husband for taking on the responsibility

of selling the cookbooks. And special thanks to

Beachside Bookshop and Bookoccino for selling the

books at no profit to themselves.

2020 Budget – Thank you to Claire Delaney and Cilla Cole for their time considering the

budget spend for 2020. Special thanks to Cilla who works tirelessly behind the scenes

organising payments and the books for us. The 2020 Budget was unanimously passed by the

AGM Meeting and highlights include.

Carried forward $54,525

Income $107,100

Expenses $11,150 - Increased the Art acquisition by $100 to cover framing. Increased the

Teaching Staff Expenses – includes appreciation gifts for thanking staff

P&C School Contributions - No real changes here - stays the same – environment, Junior

Study, Senior Study, Accelerated learning, Learning Support. New spend - $10,000 in a

focus on attendance which is a Premier’s Target

Special Projects - The P&C will put $20,000 towards a 21 seat School Bus that will enable

small groups to go on excursions. This will benefit all departments at the school. BCPS

Marketing & Management $10,000 – one person, one day per week – this is part of our

requirements for grants received for the Performance Space. Arts Project – still to be

identified $5,000. Community Engagement Project – Youth Worker $7,000 ($14,000

covered by DET and School). Transfer to Building Fun $50,000 for Learning Centre (state-of-the-art renovation of the Library) in 2020

Overall we have tried to cover extended learners and challenged learners as well as whole school initiatives with the Bus, Performance Space Management and the Learning Centre.

Working Bees - Thanks to the school

community and Ian for his continual

attendance and a special thanks to Geoff

Bateman who is always there organising

us. As usual we will present a gift

voucher to Geoff Bateman for his out of

hours work at the Working Bees.

Canteen & Uniform Store Committee - The CUS has been able to provide $50,000 to the

P&C. This money goes directly back to the students and their learning. The Canteen & Uniform

Store Committee is grateful for all the hard work that the staff and Volunteers have put in in

managing the business. This year we have had the Healthy Canteen initiative to adhere to. All

measurements have been met. Big thanks to Di Cutrie and Kath Gunn for their hard workbehind the scenes

Overall Increase in Collection of P&C Fees - Thank you to the school SASS staff for their

hard work in preparing fee statements that seem to be working in the collection of fees. All this

money goes directly back to the kids and their learning.

Barrenjoey Community Performance

Space –The acoustics and audio visual

equipment in the Space means that it

will provide a very special, local, Arts

Centre for the community. Of course it

is hoped that the Performance Space

will provide an income stream for the

School.

The space was dedicated to Ian by the

Steering Committee for his vision for

our students. You can see the plaque

in the foyer of the Performance Space.

Thanks also to Christy Bishop, Kim

Hoggard, Cilla Cole and Richard Cole

for taking up the challenge of running

the Steering Committee.

Thank you - thank you to Ian Bowsher for leading all the different stakeholders in the school and having the best interests of our kids front of mind all year round.
