Welcome to the summer season at Peninsula Arts. We are committed to showcasing new cutting edge art practices and the latest critical thinking across art forms, whilst exploring our cultural heritage to better understand how new discoveries made today and into the future, connect with our past. With no exception the summer programme is packed full of new possibilities. It is with great excitement that we see the Peninsula Arts Gallery transformed into a film set complete with a fully functioning 1950s replica cafe ‘Chez Paulette on the Sunset Strip’. I look forward to seeing you enjoying a coffee in Chez Paulette! Accompanying the exhibition we have talks, poetry readings, films, music and coffee tasting events that explore the development of café culture and the rise of celebrity / cinema cool as we know it now.

We open up the world of classical music with the launch of our Classical Masters series, exploring dramatic, romantic, and exuberant heights with concerts performed by Ten Tors Orchestra that celebrate the work of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Haydn.

The summer is here and as the days grow warmer check our website for our family activities, which include films and drop-in gallery drawing workshops.

KIerAn LYonS: InterFerenCe PAtternS 1968 – 2013kieran Lyons’ artistic experiments reflect a changing history of drawing from 1968-2013. Using drawing as a spring-board, the work calls upon a number of disciplines such as technical and freehand drawing, sculpture, installation, animation and digital projection.

Influenced by Marcel Duchamp’s experiments with chance, Lyons explores relationships between measurement and uncertainty. Working within the domain of this provocative 20th Century artist, Lyons has developed his own distinctive and very personal mode of art practice.

Family Workshop: 3 April, 13:00 – 15:00 Drop in session, however booking is advised.

Set in the hills of the Sunset Strip, Chez Paulette, one of the new European-style coffee houses that emerged in Los Angeles in the late 1950’s, attracted film stars, Marlon Brando, james Dean, Rita Hayworth and jack Nicholson. This Hollywood haven was run by Anya Lewin’s father, Max Lewin, an occasional actor and immigrant from Europe. Chez Paulette was so smooth that a set of the café was featured, with Max as host, in the detective series 77 Sunset Strip. Chez Paulette has been reconstructed again, this time in Plymouth. Come along and experience that lure of the after-dark; sip an espresso, watch a detective movie, and bring that European culture that travelled to Hollywood back again.

This exhibition spans past and present, identifying connections and signalling contrasts; it includes photographs by james Ravilious, who lived and worked in North Devon during the 70’s and 80’s, and the contemporary portraits of Cornish people by Colin Robins and Oli Udy. They share a common concern and affection for people and the patina of their everyday lives, yet they approach their subject differently. The result is a fascinating comparison, between periods of rural life in the South West and between attitudes and approaches to photography over four decades.
