introduction The installation of USM / upgrade from NST is a fairly simple process. The purpose of this document is to provide visual guidance on the process.

process The file you want to use for installation is UnisphereServiceManager-Win-32-x86-en_US-1.0.5.1.0052-1.exe. Notice that I’ve not used that version for this screenshot? It feels antiquated already.

Figure 1 – USM Installation Files

InstallAnywhere does its magic file extraction thing. I hate Flexera.

Figure 2 – Installation Preparation

If you already have the NST installed, you’ll be prompted to upgrade it to USM. If you don’t have the NST already on the workstation, you won’t get this screen.

Figure 3 – NST Replacement

The installation wizard starts with the obligatory warning about closing other applications.

The License Agreement is then presented for your review. Have you read it? Me neither, as I’ve been conditioned from a young age to wildly click yes when confronted with legalese.

Figure 5 – License Agreement

You need to click on “I accept the terms of the License Agreement” in order to proceed with the installation of USM.

Figure 6 – License Agreement - Accept

At this point you can choose to modify the default installation folder and choose the repository base location. In this example I’ve stuck with the defaults. You should do this too.

Figure 7 – Pre-Installation Summary

Clicking on install will result in a number of activities. Firstly, the NST is uninstalled.

Figure 8 – NST Uninstallation

Secondly, a JRE version appropriate for use with USM is installed. That’s right, another JRE on your machine. Because four isn’t enough.

Page 8: penguinpunk.net installing emc unisphere service manager revision

Figure 9 – Installing JRE

The Merge Module is then installed.

Web is installed.

Figure 11 – Installing Web

Once the installation is complete, you’ll be greeted with a congratulatory screen. You can choose to have the USM launch once you’ve clicked on Done.

basic usage Once USM is installed, click on the Unisphere Service Manager icon on your desktop to launch the application.

The splash screen is new and different. You’ll also notice a lack of stock photo IT workers looking happy.

Figure 14 – USM Splash Screen

Once the USM has loaded you will be presented with the Home Page. From here you can access Advisories from Powerlink, system Downloads and Support.

Click on the Login button to login to the array you wish to perform maintenance activities on.

Figure 16 – USM Login Button

You need to specify a host name or IP address. If you have multiple CLARiiONs in your environment, I recommend logging into the domain master.

Figure 17 – USM - Connect

Enter the IP address or name of the SP you’d like to connect to.

You’ll get a certificate warning if you haven’t stored the certificates for the array locally.

Figure 19 – Certificate Warning – SP A

Clicking on the Details button will provide further information on the certificates being presented.

Figure 20 – Certificate Properties

Once you’ve sorted out your certificates, you can login to the array using either Unisphere or LDAP credentials. The Unisphere credentials can either be Global or Local to the array.

Figure 21 - Array Authentication

I tend to use Unisphere domain credentials rather than LDAP, but I’ve found LDAP works as it should.

If you still have certificate issues (how many times would you like to be told to sort them out?) – you’ll need to accept the certificate for SP B as well.

Figure 23 - Certificate Warning - SP B

And you’re in! Once in USM you’ll notice a number of the same workflows as you’ve seen with NST over the past few years.

Figure 24 - USM Home Page

Clicking on the Preferences icon in the right-hand corner of USM provides access to USM preferences that you may wish to fiddle with.

Figure 25 - USM Preferences

General Preferences cover the Display Language and Debug level for the UI.

You can also change the location for the Repository – the place where USM dumps SP Collects and the like.

If you are using a proxy server to access the internets this is the place to configure your access.

Figure 28 - Preferences - Proxy Server

You can also choose to configure Auto Update for the USM.

Figure 29 - Preferences - USM Auto Update

EMC recommends you auto update USM and so do I. Go on, throw caution to the wind and live a little!

Figure 30 - Configure Update Options

Clicking on the Home icon in the left-hand corner will take you back to the home page of the USM.

Figure 31 - USM Home

You can then click on the System List to get a picture of the arrays that USM can see.

If you haven’t resolved your issues with certificates, you can right-click on the IP address of the system and select Accept for Session.

Figure 33 - Accept Certificates

To save time, right-click and select Manage Certificates and accept the certificates for all of the arrays you wish to access with USM.

You will then have the option to accept the certificates for the session or always.

Once you’ve accepted the certificates you’ll get a view of the systems with their “proper” names, not the IP addresses.

You’re all set! Now go and update the FLARE or something.
