Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Role play/drama. Various scenes from the storycan be built up in simplified role plays. These canthen be put together as a full dramatization of thestory. The pupils bring in items of clothing and props. The teacher needs to use some imagination increating simple cardboard accessories. The pupils’imagination will do most of the work. The pupils canwork in groups on backdrop scenery on large sheetsof paper. Paints or thick wax crayons are best. Allow

several weeks of work for the drama to develop fullyand encourage the pupils to interpret their rolesimaginatively. Invite other pupils/parents.Repetition. Several opportunities for repetition ofspeech occurs here. Firstly of the rhyme ‘mirror’ onthe wall’ but also from making speeches for each ofthe 7 dwarves. Each one would say ‘good morning’,sitting at the table eating, they could all ask for thebread, pass the milk.

Watching or listening for specificinformation/post–reading/whole class. Before watching or listening to the cassette (if thepupils have already read the book) elicit the namesof the main characters from the story and write themon the board. Tell the pupils to, for example, standup when they see Snow White or when she speaks,to clap. Do the same for all the characters. This willresult in very energetic and active viewing orlistening. Ask the pupils to act out vanity, anger suchas the wicked queen shows, and opposite emotions.During watching and listening – whole classprediction. Play the video or audio cassette storythrough in its entirety. The second time through, stopjust before a dramatic event in the story ( forexample when Snow White takes the poisonedapple) and ask the pupils to tell you what happensnext, then view or listen to see if they were right.

Simultaneous reading and listening in groupswill help the pupils with pronunciation and

intonation. The pupils can all speak together for the‘mirror, mirror on the wall’ sequences, for example,or imitate the horrible queen when she is selling hercombs and apples.Whole class. When the pupils are thoroughlyfamiliar with the story, having heard it with theteacher and role played and/or dramatized it, theycan listen to it on cassette. As they listen they shouldlook at the pictures and point to the variouscharacters as they are mentioned. In order tointroduce this idea, it would be best to do this insmall groups with the teacher while the rest of theclass is working on another activity. Some pupils may like to mime certain scenes fromthe video. For example, Snow White’s motherwishing for a baby by the window, the stepmothertalking to the mirror, Snow White running away inthe woods and finding the dwarves’ house. Can theother pupils find the right places on the video?
