PEMdevelopmentsinLatinAmerica

AdrianaYock CamiloEGutierrezPEMSIGSecretary Chair-ElectCostaRica USA-ColombiaWeareexcitedtogiveyouexcellentnewsforthedevelopmentofPediatricEmergencyMedicineworldwide.InNovember2016inUruguay,thefirstLatinAmericanSocietyforPediatricEmergencyMedicine(SLEPE for its translation in Spanish)was founded. Back in 1993, the firstmeetings in pediatricemergencymedicinebeganinUruguaywiththepresenceofDr.StephenLudwigandDr.StephenSelbstandsincetheneveryyeartheseimportantmeetingisheldinthiscountry.Pediatric Emergency Medicine has been evolving in Latin America through the last 15 years,mostly through theeffortsof Pediatricians interested in acute andemergent carewhoare self-trainedandhavedevelopedthespecialtyfromthegroundup.With regards to SLEPE, the ideawas bornmid-last year by several pediatricians fromParaguay,ArgentinaandUruguay.Aninitialcallforinterestresultedinapproximately70physicians,mostlypediatricianswithinterestorexpertiseinpediatricemergencycare,from8differentcountriesinLatinAmericamovingforwardwiththeidea.Itsby-lawswereapprovedbyelectronicmailbyall foundingmembersof thesociety,andfinallywas legallyestablished inMontevideo,Uruguay lastNovember inaspecialceremonyduringthelocalnationalpediatricconference.TherecognitionofthePediatricEmergencyMedicineasaspecialtyhasbeenaconstantstruggleandfewcountries inLatinAmericahaveachievedthis,Uruguay in2015andBrazil lastyear.ThefirstcongressofpediatricEmergencymedicineoftheSLEPEwillbeintwoyearsandashostwillbeUruguaywithplanstosubsequentlyrotatethecongressvenueamongvariouscountries.During themeeting inNovember,Dr. LilianaCáceresandDr.AdrianaYock introduced IFEMandthePEMSIGgrouptothenewlyestablishedSLEPEmembers.The importanceofacloserelationbetweenSLEPEandPEMSIGwashighlightedinordertobeginaclosecollaboration.

ASOCOME(AsociacióndeMédicosEmergenciólogosdeCostaRica)and SAE (Sociedad Argentina de Emergencias) invite you to theIAEMC-7 to be held in Costa Rica. The Interamerican EmergencyMedicineConferencearoseofthecombinedeffortoftheArgentinaEmergency Society and the American Academy of EmergencyMedicine.
