Itrsquos time we opened up a bit more For as long asI have known Pembroke even a little its entrancehas been closed behind St Aldatersquos church itselfldquoa hole in the wall back thererdquo as one disdainfulChrist Church porter is said to have indicated toa tourist looking for Samuel Johnsonrsquos alma mater Te Lo dge gates have always been closed to al l
those who do not know of the secret little dooron the right And yet now our presence is beingfelt who walking down St Ebbersquos has not becomeaware of our new bridge or the warm and colourfulnew buildings in Littlegate Street and Rose P lace
Wersquod been waiting f or it fo r two years Te noiseand sight of the cranes reminded us what was goingon over the road but we were otherwise mercifullyshielded from our buildersrsquo exertions content withlooking at plans and digital images of our future And now since the autumn thanks to a gap whichhas appeared in the south wall of Chapel QuadPembroke henceforth opens - onto Pembroke Tebest place to experience the novelty is actually inthe new Harold Lee Room which almost directlyoverlooks the Chapel Quad with the old FellowsrsquoGarden forming a kind of ha-ha that conceals thepresence of Brewer Street far below Tis view istruly grand ndash what a change for a College thatalways boasted intimate perspectives as a virtue somuch so that it hardly had room to turn round andlook at itself
It feels good to be noticed Watch this space fornews of upcoming work on our ldquoclosed entrancerdquoas we are determined soon to let passers-by and visitors to Oxford see into Old Quad through theLodge
You will not be surprised to see in this edition of thePembrokian more ldquoopening uprdquo as we reveal moreabout some of our fascinating alumni KennethMacKenzie (1927) shares his memories on p 7and our more recent alumna Sara Mohammadi(2001) discusses her trailblazing work in ehranDavid yler (1935) and his family Foundation which today helps to fund our access programmeare profiled on pprsquos 11-14 David was a pioneer inhis day who believed that academic learning in aninstitution should be open to knowledge of a moregeneral context Finally we hope you enjoy ourregular features ndash and do let us know if any of youare open-minded enough to try Stefanrsquos recipe (seep 15 but only if yoursquove a strong stomach)

Pembroke has had a long andillustrious history with the legalprofession so it is only right that we had
at least one Law undergraduate who hadgone on to make her career at the BarRosalind Phelps (1992) a Barrister atthe Fountain Court Chambers was onhand to advise on the less circuitous pathRecommended by each of Te Legal500 and the Chambers and PartnersDirectories Rosalind was enthusiastic inrecommending Law as a viable professionfor female undergraduates explaining thatas a self-employed Barrister she is able tocontrol her workload to accommodate forfamily life
Family business has defined CarinaBauerrsquos (1995) career to date She andher family set up and ran the familychain of coffee shops lsquoGoodBean Coffeersquoacross the South East ndash which some morelsquobookishrsquo alumni may remember as theincumbent caffeine provider at Blackwellsfor a number of years and was sold toCoffee Republic in 2001 Carina is nowthe CEO with the (also family-run)Imex Group an international exhibitionscompany Reading PPE at Pembroke wasfor her the obvious choice She knew she

Is it really all about getting a good degree and who you know When I came to work in Pembroke I started to realise that even with an Oxford degree it is still hardto know where to begin in terms of what options are out there It struck me thatalthough I was happy to try to match up students with alumni volunteers for thefledging lsquoake an Undergraduate to Lunchrsquo scheme which Irsquod inherited the studentsthemselves did not always know what they wanted to do next I had the idea oforganising a Careers Fest ndash rather bringing the mountain to Mohammed - and weheld our first event in February 2011 With the help of the JCR and MCR Presidentsand Committees and the Oxford University Careers Service we have been able tocreate an opportunity for our students to test the waters for life after Pembroke

A Law degree at Pembroke certainlyseems to provide the foundationfor a multiplicity of extraordinary
careers ldquoIrsquove had the most amazing liferdquostates Kenneth MacKenzie CBE With wife D iane perched on the arm of hischair Kenneth certainly looks everybit the man in his prime surroundedby cups won for sporting triumphstributes and awards for a multi-decade-spanning career in business and a hostof family photos crossing the centuriesIt is incidental that Kenneth will becelebrating his 104th birthday in June
Kenneth came up to Pembrokein 1927 a King Charles Scholarborn in Jersey and educated atMarlborough Initially planning toread for a Mathematics degree he soondecided to change to Law Howeverhis mathematical knowledge provedinvaluable ldquoA lot of military collegehopefuls had missed the foundations ofmathematics and the mathematical exams[for military college] were more stiff thenI was well paid by their well-off fathers(with a home in the West End and onein the Country) to teach them the basics
Teir houses were very comfo rtable and Ieven got a bit of fishingrdquo
Tis wasnrsquot the only opportunityKenneth took to exploit his talents inmathematics from an early age he wasfascinated by horses and would persuadethe postman at Marlborough to placehis bets His love of horses deepened atPembroke when he became friendly withthe son of a famous ownerbreeder with whom he would travel to Cheltenhamto watch the races ldquoI attended more racemeetings than classesrdquo Perhaps time notentirely wasted as the Royal Hunt Cuphas pride of place in Kennethrsquos home won in 1971 by Kennethrsquos horse P ictureBoy (pictured right)
Although the horses took precedenceduring Kennethrsquos years here ldquo[atPembroke] I would have been better off with stricter control M y existence thendepended upon people and friendshipsrdquohe has fond memories of his room in OldQuad ldquorather lovelyrdquo and recalls localbusinessman William Morris who wouldoften cycle into College to dine in HallldquoSuch a generous man he used to tell ustales about the factoryrdquo
After Pembroke Kenneth ndash
determined to lsquoget another languageunder his beltrsquo ndash went to work in Mexicoas a hide buyer and came back a year laterfluent in Spanish Although he neverused it he strongly espouses the merits oflearning ldquoEverything you can do in termsof education strengthens your position inbeing able to wonder at the world andtake up the things that interest yourdquo
Following his return from MexicoKenneth embarked upon a career at B HS where he rose to hold the concurrentpositions of Buyer MD and Vice-Chairndash concurrent because he refused to giveup his love of travel and bringing newideas into the UK from abroad ndash mainlythe Far East Australia and New Zealand

Our youngest alumnus present was Chris Bennetts (2006) who in astraightforward realisation of his ambitionas an undergraduate has gone on to acareer in teaching After specialising inthe teaching of PSHE (Personal Social

Another young alumnus who hasclimbed the career ladder quickly isDaniel Jewel (2000) After completingan undergraduate degree at BristolDaniel came to Pembroke to study for aMasters in History He is now a Directorand Producer with two productioncompanies under his belt Tird ManFilms ndash shortlisted for an Oscar last yearand nominated for a BIFA Award ndash andCouture Communications run with wife Ateh a beauty journalist and blogger ogether Ateh and Daniel combine theirexpertise to produce commercial filmsspecifically for use online particularly within social media sites for clientsincluding LrsquoOreal Paris Matthew Williamson and Revlon Ateh Jewelalthough not an alumna also attendedto talk to about her award-winningcareer Ateh charmingly commentedthat she feels very much one of the

Is there life after Pembroke As a finalistthis is a question I find myself thinkingabout on a regular basis Should I be doinginternships Where will I live Will I beable to get a job Does it matter that Ihave only the vaguest ideas about whatI want to do after graduation Luckilythe same question was being asked and
answered at the Pembroke Careers Festin February Every year the Collegeoffers its current students the chance tomeet and talk to a variety of Pembrokealumni about their careers paths andchoices In the beautiful new Pichette Auditorium current Pembrokians wereable to pick the alumnirsquos brains and talkto a representative of the Oxford CareersService about their options Te Careers Fest is a really valuableopportunity I was comforted by thenumber of successful alumni I spoketo who didnrsquot know what career they wanted to pursue after graduation andthose who had started on a career pathonly to later make a successful switch to
another area Te alumni with whom Ispoke made me realise how important itis to do your research about your chosencareer to be persistent and prepared to work hard from the bottom to get where you want to be Getting experience of anykind is useful even if all it shows you is what you donrsquot want to do All the alumni were friendly informativeand helpful and were genuinely interestedin hearing about our plans and giving usadvice I and the other Pembroke students who attended are very grateful to themfor giving up their time to talk to us andto the College for organising the event Tere certainly is life after Pembroke andit looks fantastic

with past speakers including Bill ClintonPhilippe Starck Ngozi Okonjo-Iwealaand Gordon Brown All speakers areinvited to give the lsquo18 minute speech oftheir livesrsquo and talks are made availableonline through EDcom Te offshoot EDx has been helping groups to hostlocally organized events in-keeping withthe ED philosophy of lsquoIdeas WorthSpreadingrsquo

Entry by Sajjad Abdolahi in the lsquo I Am Tehranrsquo Photo Competition which ran prior to the event

confounds expectations and presumptionscommonly held in the West Helping tomake it happen was Pembroke alumna
Sara Mohammadi (2001) In a recentinterview with the Washington Post Saracommented ldquoIt was important to createthis platform for both discovered andundiscovered ideas brewing in Iran to beheard debated and acted on Tere aresome exciting things happening in Iranhellip we wanted to share that with Iranians andthe rest of the worldrdquo
Sara came to Pembroke in 2001 as a visiting student from ufts where she wasstudying for her undergraduate degree inPPE Now based in Dubai she is currently working with the Family Business Networkndash Gulf Cooperation Council a non-profitorganisation which helps family businessesform local knowledge-bases and offerssupport and networking opportunities within their membership We caught up with Sara after the EDx event
WERE THERE MANY OBSTACLES TO
OVERCOME
Te main issue was that so muchhinged on the permits for the event Without the permit we couldnrsquot advertise we couldnrsquot secure speakers we couldnrsquotreach out to sponsors because the firstthing everyone would ask was lsquodo youhave the permission to host such aneventrsquo Figuring out the right process toobtain permits was not straight forward Working with AmirKabir Universitysimplified the process tremendously Tere were also many surprises When youare organizing any event that is a givenbut the likelihood of surprises increases when you are doing it for the first time without any experience in major events
and in a place where itrsquos never been donebefore Te most endearing was when myco-organizer who had the operational
experience in organizing major EDxevents had to drop out of the scene forprofessional and personal reasons Teupside was I brought together fifteen volunteers who put their heart and sweatinto making the event work with all thelimited resources and constraints we faced
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN
BRINGING TED TO IRAN
ED was introduced to me bya friend in 2008 I got hooked andended up attending the first and second EDxDubai events I wanted to be a partof EDxehran for almost two yearsever since I noticed that there are Farsisubtitles for ED alks and over 30 Farsitranslators on the ED Open ranslation
Project I envisioned more of a volunteerrole at the time which somehowsnowballed into an organizer role with far
more responsibilities
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A
WOMAN WORKING IN IRAN
I was born in Iran I hold an Iranianpassport and the majority of my extendedfamily lives in Iran so there are emotionalfamilial and practical ties to Iran Contraryto perception working in Iran as a womanis not that difficult beyond the occasionalsituations which I have also experiencedin other countries including the West When working in Iran I realized that inmost instances any lsquogender biasrsquo can bequickly eliminated and people will take you seriously on your merit and on thebasis of your expertise and capabilities
HOW HAS YOUR TIME AT PEMBROKE
IMPACTED ON YOUR CAREER AND
CHOICES YOU HAVE MADE
From the minute I got on the busfrom Heathrow to Oxford trying tofind Pembrokersquos gate entrance nestled inthe corner of a street to rowing readingdusty books at the Bodleian enjoyingthe sarnies from the pantry punting inthe summer dressing for those fabulousdinners at Pembrokersquos Hall cycling to theboat house it was all memorable Oxfordand Pembroke was an inspirationalexperience for me I loved the tutorialsystemhellipreading on the history ofeconomic thought Smith Marx Humeand other contemporary thinkers andthen having in-depth discussions aroundit with professors Te experience trainedme to be more analytical articulate andconfident
WHAT NEXT FOR TEDxTEHRAN AND
FOR YOU
Irsquod really like to see others get involvedand take the lead on EDxehran Ithink events like EDxehran shouldbe driven shaped and owned by acommunity and not one single person When you have new people you havefresh ideas and approaches Irsquod love tomentor one of our volunteers to take thelead on EDxehran 2014
Irsquom going to focus on building andexpanding the Family Business Network- GCC so it can realize its full potentialand create value for the family businessesin the GCC And who knows maybe wecan expand it to the full Middle East andNorth Africa region in a few years

V E X T R E ME WE A T HE R
1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau
of Current Affairs (an organisation set
up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see
box right)
Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried
on with co-Director wife Dorothy taking
over his professional mission developing
its output over the full school curriculum
Collaboration with the BBC and IV
after their own publishing budgets were
cut in the lsquo70s greatly enhanced the
research side of the collaboration and
other working contacts were formed
with the International Consultancy in
Religion Education and Culture Te
World Council of Churches and the
World Wildlife Fund o quote again
from the leaflet on the rust ldquoA great deal
of thought and discussion goes into the
choice of subject of a chart and every part
of its content but underlying all hellip are
the basic principles laid down by David hellip
[whose] thinking was in many ways ahead
of his timerdquo
Flashing forward to 2010 by which
time the rust had become a charity and
Dorothy yler approached Pembroke
to discuss whether the Collegersquos aims
were compatible with the Charityrsquos
objectives to promote experimentation
and training in educational principles
and methods Agreement was reached
that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips
to schools in less advantaged areas of the
UK summer learning skills programmes
and e-mentoring made the College anappropriate beneficiary Te resulting
decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an
Oxford College Te rust also funds the
extraneous costs of the Pembroke North
element of the Easter Skills School held
at BSix Hackney (the Collegersquos Pem-
Brooke partner) Te Roadshow and
Prize combined contributed to Pembroke
receiving 33 applications this year from
the North West regions of which eight
received offers

- Progress in scientific thinkingmust be made available to
all students so that the rising
generation will be familiar with the
results of research and the new ways
of life made possible to them
- Co-operation between
nations and the need for
a lsquoone-worldrsquo approach to social
problems should be presented as a
vital issue to students everywhere
From the Pictorial Charts Education Trust leaflet prepared and written by Dorothy Tyler
(available in the Pembroke Library)
- Evolution biological and social which have brought mankind to
its present level are beginning to come
under conscious control Men must
learn to use this power wisely
- otality of approach to all
subjects rather than concentration
on one aspect By appreciating all the
factors which have created a given
situation students will learn to judge
other issues in perspective
THE GUIDELINES OF THE DAVID TYLER TRUST
ldquoMy father David was deeply
impressed by the dire inequities
of society both from growing up
as a teenager during the Great
Depression and from his trip from
New York through the Deep South of
Alabama in the lsquo30s
His ideals encompassed not just
how a knowledge of history could help
to forge strategies to overcome such
inequities but how an appreciation
of science could lead to large scale
advances in societal benefits for all
He was an avid reader of the New
Scientist and a great believer in thepower of communication in all forms
to lsquolevel the playing fieldrsquo My mother
Dorothy worked closely with him
to foster these ideals and we were
working to convert the Pictorial
Charts company to electronic format
in the years before it finally ran out
of steam She wanted the yler Prize
to not only enable attendance at
Pembroke but to encourage the next
generation to pursue the same sorts
of goals of enhanced education for
all that had motivated the original
foundation of the companyrdquo
CHRISTOPHER TYLER
hosted a prize-giving ceremony with a
seminar given by Access Fellow Dr Claus
After the ceremony Chrisrsquos teacher Dr
ony Lyons commented ldquoTe Prize has
really boosted the History Departmentand the Principal of the College is now
very positive about encouraging students
to engage in similar competitions in the
futurerdquo
David ylerrsquos work gave rise to some
of the most visionary and for their day
revolutionary approaches to teaching
and broadening the minds of British
youth Pembrokersquos Access programme
has been immeasurably enhanced by their
involvement Sadly Dorothy died in early
2011 in her 100th year and Davidrsquos son

Pembroke has had a long andillustrious history with the legalprofession so it is only right that we had
at least one Law undergraduate who hadgone on to make her career at the BarRosalind Phelps (1992) a Barrister atthe Fountain Court Chambers was onhand to advise on the less circuitous pathRecommended by each of Te Legal500 and the Chambers and PartnersDirectories Rosalind was enthusiastic inrecommending Law as a viable professionfor female undergraduates explaining thatas a self-employed Barrister she is able tocontrol her workload to accommodate forfamily life
Family business has defined CarinaBauerrsquos (1995) career to date She andher family set up and ran the familychain of coffee shops lsquoGoodBean Coffeersquoacross the South East ndash which some morelsquobookishrsquo alumni may remember as theincumbent caffeine provider at Blackwellsfor a number of years and was sold toCoffee Republic in 2001 Carina is nowthe CEO with the (also family-run)Imex Group an international exhibitionscompany Reading PPE at Pembroke wasfor her the obvious choice She knew she
didnrsquot want spend three years on onesubject - a multi-focused approach whichhas obviously served her well in a career which concurrently juggles OperatingControls Strategic Partnerships and PRCarina empathised with the studentspresent on the evening and remembersherself ldquotrying to decide what to do likeeveryone hererdquo
Following the seemingly morestraightforward career trajectories were Joe Berry and Andrew Jowett Joe (1990)received his MEng in 1994 and ndash afteran enjoyable interlude as a professionaldouble bassist - joined Ernst amp Youngin the late 1990s and is no w with IMPAXgroup as Investment Director

Likened to a speed-dating eventchairs and tables fill the room with analumni representative on each and ourundergraduates are encouraged to gofrom station to station and discover forthemselves where a Pembroke degreecan lead Te overarching lsquothemersquo ofthe night seemed to be that for mostof our participants their degree wassimply a starting point and not an endin itself two of our Law graduates (JaneRice-Bowen 1992 and Clive Edwards1972) have gone on to equally note- worthy but not directly Law-relatedprofessions - although both were quickto point out what a valuable foundationtheir undergraduate degrees gave themClive now Commissioning Editor inCurrent Affairs at the BBC mentioned
how useful he found it when grappling with lawyers over Panoramarsquos ground-breaking exposeacutes and Jane who knewshe ultimately wanted to work withinthe Arts uses her legal training whennegotiating contracts in her position as Joint Chief Executive of Circus Spacethe UKrsquos National Centre for Circus Arts
Conversely Barrister DuncanHenderson (1998) currently at Addleshaw Goddard LLP read Englishduring his time at Pembroke ldquoDo thething you think yoursquore going to be bestat I liked reading books and I enjoy theefficient and effective use of language - Ican be a pedant whilst writing so Law isa good choicerdquo

Following his return from MexicoKenneth embarked upon a career at B HS where he rose to hold the concurrentpositions of Buyer MD and Vice-Chairndash concurrent because he refused to giveup his love of travel and bringing newideas into the UK from abroad ndash mainlythe Far East Australia and New Zealand
ldquoA MOST AMAZING LIFErdquoKenneth MacKenzie (1927) centenarian alumnus

Our youngest alumnus present was Chris Bennetts (2006) who in astraightforward realisation of his ambitionas an undergraduate has gone on to acareer in teaching After specialising inthe teaching of PSHE (Personal Social
Health Education) at secondary schoolsChris now finds his undergraduate degreein History and Politics useful in his newposition as Head of Politics at the JewishFree School in North London

1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau
of Current Affairs (an organisation set
up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see
box right)
Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried
on with co-Director wife Dorothy taking
over his professional mission developing
its output over the full school curriculum
Collaboration with the BBC and IV

from the leaflet on the rust ldquoA great deal
of thought and discussion goes into the
choice of subject of a chart and every part
of its content but underlying all hellip are
the basic principles laid down by David hellip

Flashing forward to 2010 by which
time the rust had become a charity and
Dorothy yler approached Pembroke
to discuss whether the Collegersquos aims
were compatible with the Charityrsquos
objectives to promote experimentation
and training in educational principles
and methods Agreement was reached
that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips
to schools in less advantaged areas of the
UK summer learning skills programmes
and e-mentoring made the College anappropriate beneficiary Te resulting
decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an
Oxford College Te rust also funds the
extraneous costs of the Pembroke North
element of the Easter Skills School held
at BSix Hackney (the Collegersquos Pem-

receiving 33 applications this year from
the North West regions of which eight

THE GUIDELINES OF THE DAVID TYLER TRUST
ldquoMy father David was deeply
impressed by the dire inequities
of society both from growing up
as a teenager during the Great
Depression and from his trip from
New York through the Deep South of
Alabama in the lsquo30s
His ideals encompassed not just
how a knowledge of history could help
to forge strategies to overcome such
inequities but how an appreciation
of science could lead to large scale
advances in societal benefits for all
He was an avid reader of the New
Scientist and a great believer in thepower of communication in all forms
to lsquolevel the playing fieldrsquo My mother
Dorothy worked closely with him
to foster these ideals and we were
working to convert the Pictorial
Charts company to electronic format
in the years before it finally ran out
of steam She wanted the yler Prize
to not only enable attendance at
Pembroke but to encourage the next
generation to pursue the same sorts
of goals of enhanced education for
all that had motivated the original
foundation of the companyrdquo
CHRISTOPHER TYLER
hosted a prize-giving ceremony with a
seminar given by Access Fellow Dr Claus
After the ceremony Chrisrsquos teacher Dr
ony Lyons commented ldquoTe Prize has
really boosted the History Departmentand the Principal of the College is now
very positive about encouraging students
to engage in similar competitions in the
futurerdquo
David ylerrsquos work gave rise to some
of the most visionary and for their day
revolutionary approaches to teaching
and broadening the minds of British
youth Pembrokersquos Access programme
has been immeasurably enhanced by their
involvement Sadly Dorothy died in early
2011 in her 100th year and Davidrsquos son
Christopher has taken over her work on
behalf of the rust

Following his return from MexicoKenneth embarked upon a career at B HS where he rose to hold the concurrentpositions of Buyer MD and Vice-Chairndash concurrent because he refused to giveup his love of travel and bringing newideas into the UK from abroad ndash mainlythe Far East Australia and New Zealand
ldquoA MOST AMAZING LIFErdquoKenneth MacKenzie (1927) centenarian alumnus

Our youngest alumnus present was Chris Bennetts (2006) who in astraightforward realisation of his ambitionas an undergraduate has gone on to acareer in teaching After specialising inthe teaching of PSHE (Personal Social
Health Education) at secondary schoolsChris now finds his undergraduate degreein History and Politics useful in his newposition as Head of Politics at the JewishFree School in North London

1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau
of Current Affairs (an organisation set
up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see
box right)
Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried
on with co-Director wife Dorothy taking
over his professional mission developing
its output over the full school curriculum
Collaboration with the BBC and IV

from the leaflet on the rust ldquoA great deal
of thought and discussion goes into the
choice of subject of a chart and every part
of its content but underlying all hellip are
the basic principles laid down by David hellip

Flashing forward to 2010 by which
time the rust had become a charity and
Dorothy yler approached Pembroke
to discuss whether the Collegersquos aims
were compatible with the Charityrsquos
objectives to promote experimentation
and training in educational principles
and methods Agreement was reached
that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips
to schools in less advantaged areas of the
UK summer learning skills programmes
and e-mentoring made the College anappropriate beneficiary Te resulting
decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an
Oxford College Te rust also funds the
extraneous costs of the Pembroke North
element of the Easter Skills School held
at BSix Hackney (the Collegersquos Pem-

Prize combined contributed to Pembroke
receiving 33 applications this year from
the North West regions of which eight

From the Pictorial Charts Education Trust leaflet prepared and written by Dorothy Tyler
(available in the Pembroke Library)
- Evolution biological and social which have brought mankind to
its present level are beginning to come
under conscious control Men must
learn to use this power wisely
- otality of approach to all
subjects rather than concentration
on one aspect By appreciating all the
factors which have created a given
situation students will learn to judge
other issues in perspective
THE GUIDELINES OF THE DAVID TYLER TRUST
ldquoMy father David was deeply
impressed by the dire inequities
of society both from growing up
as a teenager during the Great
Depression and from his trip from
New York through the Deep South of
Alabama in the lsquo30s
His ideals encompassed not just
how a knowledge of history could help
to forge strategies to overcome such
inequities but how an appreciation
of science could lead to large scale
advances in societal benefits for all
He was an avid reader of the New
Scientist and a great believer in thepower of communication in all forms
to lsquolevel the playing fieldrsquo My mother
Dorothy worked closely with him
to foster these ideals and we were
working to convert the Pictorial
Charts company to electronic format
in the years before it finally ran out
of steam She wanted the yler Prize
to not only enable attendance at
Pembroke but to encourage the next
generation to pursue the same sorts
of goals of enhanced education for
all that had motivated the original
foundation of the companyrdquo
CHRISTOPHER TYLER
hosted a prize-giving ceremony with a
seminar given by Access Fellow Dr Claus
After the ceremony Chrisrsquos teacher Dr
ony Lyons commented ldquoTe Prize has
really boosted the History Departmentand the Principal of the College is now
very positive about encouraging students
to engage in similar competitions in the
futurerdquo
David ylerrsquos work gave rise to some
of the most visionary and for their day
revolutionary approaches to teaching
and broadening the minds of British
youth Pembrokersquos Access programme
has been immeasurably enhanced by their
involvement Sadly Dorothy died in early
2011 in her 100th year and Davidrsquos son
Christopher has taken over her work on

Is there life after Pembroke As a finalistthis is a question I find myself thinkingabout on a regular basis Should I be doinginternships Where will I live Will I beable to get a job Does it matter that Ihave only the vaguest ideas about whatI want to do after graduation Luckilythe same question was being asked and
answered at the Pembroke Careers Festin February Every year the Collegeoffers its current students the chance tomeet and talk to a variety of Pembrokealumni about their careers paths andchoices In the beautiful new Pichette Auditorium current Pembrokians wereable to pick the alumnirsquos brains and talkto a representative of the Oxford CareersService about their options Te Careers Fest is a really valuableopportunity I was comforted by thenumber of successful alumni I spoketo who didnrsquot know what career they wanted to pursue after graduation andthose who had started on a career pathonly to later make a successful switch to
another area Te alumni with whom Ispoke made me realise how important itis to do your research about your chosencareer to be persistent and prepared to work hard from the bottom to get where you want to be Getting experience of anykind is useful even if all it shows you is what you donrsquot want to do All the alumni were friendly informativeand helpful and were genuinely interestedin hearing about our plans and giving usadvice I and the other Pembroke students who attended are very grateful to themfor giving up their time to talk to us andto the College for organising the event Tere certainly is life after Pembroke andit looks fantastic

confounds expectations and presumptionscommonly held in the West Helping tomake it happen was Pembroke alumna

1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau

up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see

Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried

that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips

decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an

receiving 33 applications this year from
the North West regions of which eight

with past speakers including Bill ClintonPhilippe Starck Ngozi Okonjo-Iwealaand Gordon Brown All speakers areinvited to give the lsquo18 minute speech oftheir livesrsquo and talks are made availableonline through EDcom Te offshoot EDx has been helping groups to hostlocally organized events in-keeping withthe ED philosophy of lsquoIdeas WorthSpreadingrsquo
EDxehran was held this Februaryat AmirKabir University of echnology Te aim was to showcase Iranrsquos innovatorsand thinkers and give them a platformfor speech Evident throughout was theenthusiasm to demonstrate how muchIran has to contribute to the global

Entry by Sajjad Abdolahi in the lsquo I Am Tehranrsquo Photo Competition which ran prior to the event
taking place
confounds expectations and presumptionscommonly held in the West Helping tomake it happen was Pembroke alumna

1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau
of Current Affairs (an organisation set
up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see
box right)
Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried
on with co-Director wife Dorothy taking
over his professional mission developing
its output over the full school curriculum
Collaboration with the BBC and IV
after their own publishing budgets were
cut in the lsquo70s greatly enhanced the
research side of the collaboration and
other working contacts were formed
with the International Consultancy in
Religion Education and Culture Te
World Council of Churches and the

from the leaflet on the rust ldquoA great deal
of thought and discussion goes into the
choice of subject of a chart and every part
of its content but underlying all hellip are
the basic principles laid down by David hellip
[whose] thinking was in many ways ahead
of his timerdquo
Flashing forward to 2010 by which
time the rust had become a charity and
Dorothy yler approached Pembroke
to discuss whether the Collegersquos aims
were compatible with the Charityrsquos
objectives to promote experimentation
and training in educational principles
and methods Agreement was reached
that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips
to schools in less advantaged areas of the
UK summer learning skills programmes
and e-mentoring made the College anappropriate beneficiary Te resulting
decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an
Oxford College Te rust also funds the
extraneous costs of the Pembroke North
element of the Easter Skills School held
at BSix Hackney (the Collegersquos Pem-

Prize combined contributed to Pembroke
receiving 33 applications this year from
the North West regions of which eight

- Progress in scientific thinkingmust be made available to
all students so that the rising
generation will be familiar with the
results of research and the new ways
of life made possible to them
- Co-operation between
nations and the need for
a lsquoone-worldrsquo approach to social
problems should be presented as a
vital issue to students everywhere
From the Pictorial Charts Education Trust leaflet prepared and written by Dorothy Tyler
(available in the Pembroke Library)
- Evolution biological and social which have brought mankind to
its present level are beginning to come
under conscious control Men must
learn to use this power wisely
- otality of approach to all
subjects rather than concentration
on one aspect By appreciating all the
factors which have created a given
situation students will learn to judge
other issues in perspective
THE GUIDELINES OF THE DAVID TYLER TRUST
ldquoMy father David was deeply
impressed by the dire inequities
of society both from growing up
as a teenager during the Great
Depression and from his trip from
New York through the Deep South of
Alabama in the lsquo30s
His ideals encompassed not just
how a knowledge of history could help
to forge strategies to overcome such
inequities but how an appreciation
of science could lead to large scale
advances in societal benefits for all
He was an avid reader of the New
Scientist and a great believer in thepower of communication in all forms
to lsquolevel the playing fieldrsquo My mother
Dorothy worked closely with him
to foster these ideals and we were
working to convert the Pictorial
Charts company to electronic format
in the years before it finally ran out
of steam She wanted the yler Prize
to not only enable attendance at
Pembroke but to encourage the next
generation to pursue the same sorts
of goals of enhanced education for
all that had motivated the original
foundation of the companyrdquo
CHRISTOPHER TYLER
hosted a prize-giving ceremony with a
seminar given by Access Fellow Dr Claus
After the ceremony Chrisrsquos teacher Dr
ony Lyons commented ldquoTe Prize has
really boosted the History Departmentand the Principal of the College is now
very positive about encouraging students
to engage in similar competitions in the
futurerdquo
David ylerrsquos work gave rise to some
of the most visionary and for their day
revolutionary approaches to teaching
and broadening the minds of British
youth Pembrokersquos Access programme
has been immeasurably enhanced by their
involvement Sadly Dorothy died in early
2011 in her 100th year and Davidrsquos son
Christopher has taken over her work on
behalf of the rust

THE PEMBROKIAN 12 THE PEMBROKIAN 13 Images from Te Pictoral Charts Educational rust
V E X T R E ME WE A T HE R
1953 Te rust had taken over as the
primary provider to the subscription list of
schools formerly supplied by the Bureau
of Current Affairs (an organisation set
up to educate and raise morale amongst
British servicemen in World War II) It
produced as many as eighteen different
charts a year (six per term) covering a
diversity of topics to reflect Davidrsquos vision
as set out in the rustrsquos guidelines (see
box right)
Although David suffered a fatal heart
attack in 1969 the rustrsquos work carried
on with co-Director wife Dorothy taking
over his professional mission developing
its output over the full school curriculum
Collaboration with the BBC and IV
after their own publishing budgets were
cut in the lsquo70s greatly enhanced the
research side of the collaboration and
other working contacts were formed
with the International Consultancy in
Religion Education and Culture Te
World Council of Churches and the
World Wildlife Fund o quote again
from the leaflet on the rust ldquoA great deal
of thought and discussion goes into the
choice of subject of a chart and every part
of its content but underlying all hellip are
the basic principles laid down by David hellip
[whose] thinking was in many ways ahead
of his timerdquo
Flashing forward to 2010 by which
time the rust had become a charity and
Dorothy yler approached Pembroke
to discuss whether the Collegersquos aims
were compatible with the Charityrsquos
objectives to promote experimentation
and training in educational principles
and methods Agreement was reached
that Pembrokersquos access initiatives
through their use of student road-trips
to schools in less advantaged areas of the
UK summer learning skills programmes
and e-mentoring made the College anappropriate beneficiary Te resulting
decision to launch a David yler Essay
Prize specifically working with schools
in our target areas and designed to
encourage teenagers to use their critical
thinking faculties was met with all-round
approval Te committee was delighted
to award Chris Filsell from Loreto Sixth
Form College in Manchester with the
first prize of pound100 in 2012 Monies from
the donation fund the Prize and also the
extensive campaign to ensure that the
Prize actively increases sixth-formerrsquos
awareness of the academic expectations
of upper-tier universities and the fact
that studying at such universities can be
a realistic expectation for many more
students that might have otherwise
considered it achievable or appropriate
Further it gives these sixth-formers a
chance to meet up with current Pembroke
undergraduates who last year undertook
an lsquoAccess Roadshowrsquo travelling up tothe North West target region to meet
with pupils and give peer-to-peer insight
into life as an undergraduate at an
Oxford College Te rust also funds the
