WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GET INVOLVED IN THE
YARN COLLECTIVE?
I am a huge fan of collaborations. The knitting world
thrives on it, and it’s always exciting to see what
different people bring to the table and how we all
riff off each other. I was so excited by the premise
of The Yarn Collective, not only for its collaboration
between dyer and designer, but as a chance to work
more closely with other designers I respect and
admire. I can’t wait to keep playing!

WHAT PART OF THE PROCESS SO FAR HAVE YOU
ENJOYED THE MOST?
I’ve enjoyed so much the exploration of color. This
gave me the opportunity to explore the difference
between what colors I love versus what colors I want
to wear—and the ways to find a bridge between the
two. It was a challenge to articulate my feelings
exactly about the nuances of the colors I chose, but I
learned so much from the process and am so happy
with the colors that emerged!
WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE NEXT
STEPS OF THE PROCESS?
I am looking forward to really delving into the
combinations of the colors together. I am a stripe
girl to the core, and I can’t wait to try all my colors
together. It’s like my very own custom box of crayons!

Merino wool is famous for its richly deserved
reputation for softness – it is luxuriously gentle on
the skin. It reacts to changes in body temperature,
so it is an ideal fiber to wear all year round. Our
yarns are spun from the softest merino wool to
create a wonderfully soft handle that is suitable
for all types of knitting and crochet. The final spun
thread has been plied together with just enough
twist to prevent pilling but to allow the fabric to
softly drape.

CURATED BYB R I S T O L’ S C O L O R I N S P I R AT I O N
“My whole collection is based on the rich,
pure tones of gems and minerals. I’ve always
loved these colors and their depth, complexity,
and saturation. I think since they’re all based
on naturally occurring colors, they all speak
well to each other and come together into a
coherent palette. I’m so excited to explore
them further: the icy grey-greens, the deep
copper oranges, the vivid coral-y carnelians, the
soft neutral greys and sepias—all of them. ”
SPESSARTINE - a rich, deep ruby, opulent and
complex with hints of crimson and oxblood.
CHALCEDONY - a saturated blue-grey, with accents
of stormwater and grey skies.
COPPER AGATE - an autumnal and fiery orange,
with subtle shades of ochre and umber.
SIDERITE - a warm, soothing olive green, blended
with soft hints of charcoal grey.
EPIDOTE - a perfect dusty bottle green, hitting the
perfect balance between black and olive.
SMOKY QUARTZ - a soft, neutral sepia with touches
of copper and warm, cozy grey.
TELLURIUM - an iceberg of a color, with cold, clear
pale greens and greys.
BUMBLEBEE JASPER - a warm, old gold with hints
of acid green and sunflowers.
CARNELIAN - a spicy coral, sprinkled with hot
orange and pink accents.
PYRITE - a cool and crisp yellow-green, with shades
of soft sage to yellowest canary.

THE YARND Y E T E C H N I Q U E S
ARTISAN HAND PAINTING
First, the skeins are laid out side by side and
then colour spooned to our dimensions and
specifications. To create Bristol Ivy’s semi solid
shades, close tonal colours are chosen to reflect
minerals and gemstones, creating warm, complex
hues. Hand painting is the perfect technique for
this result, giving more control over how specific
shades are blended.
Once painted the hanks are steamed to set the
colour then rinsed and softened, allowed to dry,
and then sent to the packing house to be shaped
into final skeins, labelled and packed. HAND PAINTING
TIP
Not all hand-dyed yarns flash or pool.
Flashing and pooling occurs when a colour
knits up in the same area row after row,
causing a big puddle or flash of colour. To
avoid pooling, alternate each from between
two balls of the same shade of yarn.

LARKIN PULLOVER
The perfect cozy pullover. Worked sideways
throughout the body, shaping occurs within
the broken ribbing at the shoulders and creates
unexpected curves and tailoring. It is finished with
sleeves worked out from the body in the round,
and a cushy cowl picked up and knit in the round.
DONNE HAT
Brioche and curves come together. Worked in the
round from the bottom up, this hat uses cleverly
placed increases and decreases to push and pull
the fabric around into interlocking swoops and
braids.
PATTERN DESIGNI N S P I R AT I O N & P R O C E S S E S
The saturated colors and slight variegation in the
colorways made me immediately think of texture,
and the blending and highlighting of colors that
that can create. In addition, I wanted to explore
how to carry soft swoops and curves across the
texture of both designs, letting the fabric shift and
turn by manipulating stitch patterns, increasing,
and decreasing. The final balance was to make
sure that both pieces were infinitely wearable,
paying homage to the coziness and softness of the
yarn itself.
