From Our Commander,As we enter the holiday season, we usually take

some time to reflect on the year coming to an end. When I look back at the year for our Squadron, I havesome mixed feelings. It has been a great year, butthere have also been some painful moments.

We have lost some close friends this year. Wehave lost a member who was a past SquadronCommander. We have lost a friend who was a past

Wing Commander. We also have had severalmembers who have lost friends and family membersthis year. These losses have affected us personallyas well as our Squadron. We have lost family, friends, mentors, and teachers. These losses haveleft voids that will be difficult to fill.

We have gained new members. We have been very fortunate to gain severalnew members that bring a great deal of skill and enthusiasm into our Squadron. am looking forward to seeing what the new year brings in this area.

We have grown professionally. Several of our members have completed newlevels of professional development.

We have gained skill in Emergency Services. We have gained new GroundTeam and Air Crew members. We have also had several members increase thequalifications.

Aerospace Education continues to be a priority. We have had several membecomplete the Yeager Award. We also have ongoing AE programs.

Cadet Programs continues to be a very exciting area. We have developed anexcellent environment for our Cadets. It has become a program that we are allvery proud of.

Safety continues to be the backbone of all of our programs. We have had avery safe year. This is no accident. We have a great safety program because a loof people work very hard. Every member is a Safety Officer. This motto fosters a

environment of Safety.I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish in 2012. I am looking

forward to 2013 with excitement.I would like to thank everyone who has helped our Squadron be successful.

You are the reason we continue to improve. We would not be what we are withoyou.

On behalf of all of the staff members of Squadron 118, I would like to wisheveryone a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Safety

Officer Ron Harlan and his family in the loss of his mother last

month. In lieu of his article, Eddie Shurbutt has submitted a

    Safety Article.

hristmas Tree SafetyAs most of you know, Ron Harlan usually writes the Safety article for our newsletter. As an early Christmas present, letme fulfill the task this month. Take a well-deserved break and we will hear from you again next month.

There is a lot that can be said about Christmas tree safety this year, most of which you have already heard orsaid yourself. When buying a live pre

-cut tree, make sure the tree is still alive and healthy. A fresh tree is

green, needles are hard to pull from the branches, and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break.Lift the tree and bounce the cut end on the ground, if a bunch of needles come tumbling off, it isnt a safe treeto take home. The trunk should be sticky and the limbs should be very flexible. Keeping your thirsty Christmastree well hydrated is the best way to prevent a tree fire. Keep the water in the stand well above the fresh cutbottom of the trunk. When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label Fire Resistant.

    Christmas Lights Inside and Outside

Unplug the lights and decorations when you are not home, or they are not in use. Real trees are highlyflammable and lights and decorations can short out and start a fire. Check each set of tree lights for frayedwires, broken bulbs, and loose connections. Turn off lights before you go to bed or leave the house. Never runelectrical cords under carpets or rugs, over nails, in traffic areas, or where there is a chance of water. Neveruse electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and aperson touching a branch could be electrocuted. Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure theyhave been certified for outdoor use. To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, notnails or tacks.

    Fireplace Safety

Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs, papers, and other decorations from fireplace area. Check tosee that the flue is open. Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappingsignite suddenly and burn intensely. Be sure to use a screen or shield if burning an open fireplace. One amberpopping from the fire onto a dry tree can ignite and turn a Merry Christmas into a Fiery Nightmare.

So take a few minutes as you put up your tree and decorations, and make sure that they are still safe to use.Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Safe New Year.

    Eddie Shurbutt, Capt.SER-AL-118

Share the JoyOne of our responsibilities as Pilots is to share the joy we have of aviation with

others in a safe manner. In the CAP one of the opportunities we have to do that isby giving Cadet Orientation Rides (O-Rides). These are aircraft flights that last

about one hour following a syllabus that has been approved. Each Cadet isallowed five funded Powered Flights, and five funded Glider Flights. If you have

not had the pleasure of giving the First Flight to a Cadet you are truly missing agreat experience.Major Jim Gosnell

As we move toward the end of 2012 I am already getting inquiries about the Alabama Wing Annual Conference. I cantell you two very important pieces of information. First the conference will be held in Mobile Alabama. We are veryexcited about this opportunity to have our conference down on the coast in Mobile. Also our venue is the Battle HouseRenaissance Hotel and Spa.Contain the gasp and clapping!! The rates are fantastic (thanks to Meddie Clark) and thevenue probably one of the best, if not the best, hotel and convention location in the area. This is really going to be anice setting for our conference. The second piece of information that is critical for each of you is that the dates of theconference are March 15-17 2013. Be sure to mark the dates! The next item is that the conference hotel registration is actually open. For real. It really is available. I have attachedthe information below for those who want to go ahead and make a room reservation. We will be bringing up the ALWGConference registration online in early January, 2013.

Everyone is excited about our venue. We are planning a superb event with lots of training to be made available. Plannow to attend. Plan to stay the entire weekend. We will have special activities for you but plan some extra time to visitthe city and all the wonderful activities to do from shopping, to the museums, to the USS Alabama, to the beach. There is something for everyone.

ALWG Emergency Services Mission AircreSchoolGreetings All,

Some additional slots have opened up in the ALWG Emergency Services SchooMission Aircrew School. To ensure that we are optimizing training opportunities fthe members of this wing, we have reopened the application window until Janua6th so we can fill these open slots. Those interested in participating should applyby clicking on the "Aircrew School Application" link at http://wess.alwg.us.

Applicants will need to already be fully current and qualified Mission Scanners.

Mission Pilot and Mission Observer Trainees are highly encouraged to apply, buwe are also taking those members who are already qualified as Mission Pilot/Observer that are interested in enhancing their aircrew knowledge and skills(certainly something to keep in mind for the upcoming ALWG SAR Competition!)Cadets are welcome to participate as well so long as they are already Scannerqualified.

The third of five training weekends of the FY13 WESS training cycle will be heldJan 18-20 and will begin the Mission Pilot / Mission Observer track of MAS. TheMission Scanner track has already concluded and was a huge success. Bycombining classroom presentations, tabletop & practical enrichment exercises, awell as operational training sorties in a very structured, task based trainingenvironment, members receive an exceptionally high quality training experienceThe course fee is $25 which helps offset the cost of training materials. Travel to/from the activity in corporate vehicles is reimbursable and lodging is provided onsite free of charge. Meals are a combination of bring-your-own and eating at locadining establishments. Each weekend, the activity begins at 7pm on Fridayevening (sign-in opens at 6:30) and concludes around noon on Sunday. Due tointensity and breadth of the training, it is necessary that participants attend everweekend for the entire weekend and remain on site both Friday and Saturdaynights. Members from seven different squadrons participated in the MissionScanner track of MAS. Please seek them out to get a first hand account of whatWESS-MAS is like. Additional documents with "what to expect" and a packing lisare available for download at wess.alwg.us.

Again, the application window will be open until January 6th. Should we havemore members apply than we have slots available, an announcement will bemade on January 8th of who will be attending. If you have any questionsregarding the Aircrew School component of WESS, please let me know. If youhave questions regarding WESS in general, please direct them to the activitydirector, LtCol Michael Long at [email protected].

ThanksI trust all of you dressed in your corporate or dress blues for CAPs Sabbath/Sunday,December 1. The Shurbutt family did, and our pastor made an announcement to thecongregation about why were dressed that way and what Civil Air Patrol was. They gaveus a standing ovation for our service. That really felt good and since then, many haveasked about the program.

I would like to use this time to express our thanks to Edgewood Church in Anniston forbeing so generous with their facility for awards ceremonies, fun nights, and our ChristmasParty. Lets all remember that when we use a facility such as this, we need to leave it inbetter shape than we found it. That includes the Pell City meeting center and any aftermeeting restaurant we may visit. We want to be asked back and set a good example for

    those that may be watching.

Character Development is going to be very interesting in January. Please make sure youare present in order to learn about something that could mean life or death.

    Drill Team. . . Page 12

2013 CAP NCC Alabama Wing Drill Team

On November 9 thru 11, I went to Maxwell AFB at the OTS (Officer Training School) building. During thaeekend, 18 cadets and myself met from various Alabama squadrons such as Cullman, Springville andaxwell. Friday night we received a briefing from our main coaches, C/Col Ryan Erskine and Lt. Charlie

urphy and introductions were made to one another. Saturday after 0600 reveille, we went to breakfast at n-base cafeteria, then went to practice basic drill until lunch. After lunch, we went to a classroom and begork on our innovative drill routine.

An Innovative drill routine is a set of movements practiced to perfection, because when performed, no dam personnel are allowed to speak. Innovative drill routines are meant to dazzle and amaze, so you can

erform any drill command, as well as making up your own, as long as all of your team displays their bestlitary bearing. Not only can teams create movements, but also, every member of a team can move in a

fferent direction if wanted. All members of an innovative drill team, however, MUST finish in exactly theme spot in the flight they started.

During our brainstorming efforts, I suggested a set of column and flanking movements for the routine. Mea, with slight adjusting for pad size and convenience, was adopted. Directly after our innovative drillanning and a short rest period, we went back out to our parking lot drill pad and began practicing our routAfter several hours of drill practice and dinner, we made our way back to the OTS building we were stayto change clothes and prepare for the physical fitness and fun portions of the weekend. After dressing anretching, we completed a mile run to show where each of us was in terms of fitness. After completing thele run and cooling down, we played a game of Ultimate Frisbee, where the two fastest runners got to choeir teammates. Before going to bed, we were all given one and a half hours of "team time" to buildendships and teamwork.

The next morning we dressed in our Blues and after breakfast our uniforms were inspected. Everyone h

least a few uniform issues including, incorrect shoes, ribbon order, belt direction, etc.. After inspection wacticed our innovative drill routine again, but because of wearing Blues, it was a little more difficult. One were finished practicing, we were allowed to change clothes before packing and sign out. We were thead to be driven to the gates by Maj. Ogilvie because our parents or drivers couldn't get past security.

At the end of the weekend, we were all tired and ready to go home, of the 19 cadets that tried out, only embers are allowed on the team, so 5 were cut at the end of the weekend. An e-mail congratulated all oho made it.

Overall it was a fun experience and was worth the trip, and I'm sure everyone learned something usefulor example, I learned that long sleeved Blues MUST wear ties at all times.

Next month, our drill team for the NCC will be officially introduced and each month afterward we will meeack at Maxwell for another weekend of training.

I hope this inspires and interests our cadets enough to try out for our drill team next year. If so I'm gladrote this and hope to see you then.

    SSgt Gabriel Sweatt

CONGRATULATIONS, C/SSGT Sweatt on making the Alabama Drill Team! Were Proud of you and kn

you will represent Pell City well!!
