Key Performance Parameters

4-pass capability fully installed.

Design parameters are stretch goals, with challenges /opportunities for post-NYSERDA funding & collaboration

beam, through the use of a multi-pass ERL with permanent magnet recirculation arcs. While simpler ERLs havebeen constructed and operated before, this new innovative ERL design needs to be tested first as a prototype.

BNL will serve as NYSERDA’s Contractor, but the majority of the work will be conducted at Cornell University.Cornell University has sufficient high bay area and associated infrastructure to enable the prototype to becompleted with the additional construction and installation of a permanent magnet recirculation arc. Theprototype ERL will be installed in a repurposed extracted-beam hall in the Wilson laboratory at Cornell. Thisfacility provides the basic infrastructure required to test the multi-pass (4-turn) ERL, including utilityconnections, support infrastructure, shielding and controls. Both BNL and Cornell will provide access totheir test facilities to NYSERDA representatives.

BNL will manage, direct and coordinate the entire project with Cornell University working as a sub-contractor toBNL. BNL will provide a copy of the subcontract with Cornell to NYSERDA,

The overall project includes the design, procurement, installation, commissioning and testing of scientificequipment and all of the associated labor to manage and operate the prototype facility.

A set of key performance parameters (KPPs) have been defined for the prototype project as a way to monitorproject progress. The project entails significant technical risk and these KPPs will be reviewed frequentlythroughout the project to gauge performance. The KPPs are as follows (Table 1):

Two critical “go/no go” technical performance milestones have been incorporated into the project workscope to mitigate overall risk and allow for project termination, if necessary, before all funding has beencommitted.

Equipment Protection System was developed — continues. - A review of Phase 1 was held on March 1.

An amended Radiation Producing Equipment permit was approved by CLASSE and Cornell in November.

Site visit by NYSERDA to Cornell on March 12. - Many ideas were brainstormed. - Eg the joint BNL-Cornell optimization of a broader

public relations event, when there has been significant success with CBETA beam.

Fractional Arc Test beam commissioning analysis was refined and recorded as Tech Note 39.

1. Fractional Arc Test: “The Advisory Committee would therefore suggest a more detailed analysis with the goal of achieving not only qualitative, but also quantitative agreement between the model and measured data and encourages the CBETA team to develop the required tools for such a detailed analysis in time for the full machine commissioning in 2019.”

Response: A detailed analysis has been refined, and is presented in Technical Note 39. Copious new data being acquired during Task 9. (See presentation by Gulliford.)

2. Equipment Protection System: “A review of the machine protection system is suggested.” ... “The Committee suggests that the Project have an in-depth review of the Machine Protection System including the commissioning plan and calibration of beam loss monitors.” ... “Enhanced analysis of the sensitivity of the magnets to radiation damage and the ability of the loss monitors to protect from such levels would seem prudent.”

Response: A review of the EPS (Phase 1) was held on March 1. The EPS is a vital component in commissioning activities. (See presentation by Banerjee, & tech notes 36, 38 & 40.)

3. Finalizing optics: “The advisory committee suggests finalizing the dump line lattice and optics as soon as possible and preparing tools and procedures for measuring the energy acceptance and aperture of the line in the final configuration in CBETA.”

Response: The optics have been finalized. Tools and procedures for measuring energy acceptance & aperture have been developed, and continue in development.

4. Commissioning configuration evolution: “It was not clear from the presentations at what stage the operation team would switch from the baseline, 4-pass energy recovery configuration to the back-up scenarios with 2 or 3 passes. The committee suggests defining and spelling out the criteria and deadline[s] for taking these decisions well before the commissioning starts.”

Response: The re-configuration plan was developed by a consensus of the senior management team and the control room principals. Back-up contingency scenarios are available. (See presentations by Hoffstaetter, Bartnik & Berg.)

Milestone 9. The “traffic lights” (previous slide) include a nominal 30 day contingency, from May 30 to June 30.

- Some of that contingency has been lost, but June 30 is still reasonable.

Milestone 10. Moving from “single pass energy scan” to “single pass ER” should be smooth.

- Continue beam through R1, MLC & into the dump - Nominal date for milestone 10 is October 30 … - For any reasonable chance of meeting Milestone 11,

we need to achieve it before the July 15 shutdown.

Optimizing human resources in the control room

Roles & Responsibilities (see wiki on AC home page):

• Principle Investigators “High-level scientific guidance”

• Scientific co-ordinator “Lays out the scientific plan … at a high level, keeping track of weekly and daily goals.”

• Run co-ordinator interfaces with CESR, schedule, etc.

• Lead Operator: One must be present to run beam. - Currently 3 are qualified, often on shift together. - Need to train 3 (?) more, to lead ~6 independent shifts.

• Support Operator: Provides operational support.

The Senior Management Team and the control room principals have achieved a consensus plan:

1. July 15 summer shutdown: Begin to re-configure the splitters for 4-pass Energy Recovery - Final commitment at a July 8 focus-group meeting

2. No intermediate re-configuration before July 15

3. No attempt at 1 mA operation before July 15 - Although we will carefully increase the current

towards 1 mA, within safe limits:

Milestones 9 & 10: “1-pass energy scan” and “1-pass ER” - have a modest amount of built-in schedule contingency - are relatively straightforward. - need milestone 10 before July 15 shutdown

Milestone 11: “4-pass ER” – (low current) - a schedule challenge - optimising the re-configurations is key.

9: Single Pass Beam Energy Scan 2019 June 30

a) Pass beam through MLC and around the arc once during this first phase of beam commissioning.

b) Test the ability of the arc magnets to pass a broad range of beam energies during this test.

c) Perform energy scan by adjusting the accelerating voltage of the MLC by activating the beam diagnostic systems. Document all results.

b) Compare measured KPPs against the design requirements.

c) Commission C-Beta for further operation and experiments.
