Sport facility plan gets supportBY GABRIELLE STUART

The community has welcomed plans to build a multi-million dol-lar community sport facility at Porritt Park.

The plan, which is being devel-oped by the Celebration Lions Sports Trust, would cost $6 million to $8 million to build.

It would include an athletics track, several sports fields, a grand-stand, a members gym and com-munity centre, and a “Trim Track” running around the park.

The plan has already won the support of schools, businesses and community groups in the area.

Aranui High School principal John Rohs said the plan would be a fantastic enhancement for the community.

“The community has lost QE II and it could be a long time before that facility is developed, so it’s obvious that anyone who wants to provide sport facilities in the area will get the support of not only Aranui, but most schools in the community.”

He believed it could help to bring a lot of club sport back into the community, as well as provid-ing much-needed facilities for ex-isting groups.

STANDING ON WATER: You could be forgiven for thinking people were walking on water at the estuary last week. About 20 people tried stand up paddleboarding on Saturday at a free lesson run by KiteSports. Owner Tim Stockman said the sport was the fastest growing watersport in the world. He estimated there were more than 200 people involved in the sport in Christchurch. For more information visit www.kitesports.co.nz, or the shop at 14 Brighton Mall.

•From page 1The park was abandoned

by Canterbury Hockey after the earthquakes, because the cost of rebuilding the facili-ties on the damaged land was too high.

The cost of repairing the hockey turfs and facilities was estimated at about $8 million.

Canterbury Hockey is now planning to rebuild as part of the Nga Puna Wai sport hub in the south-west of the city.

But chief executive Rod Templeton said he had seen the plans for the Porritt Park development and believed it could be successful, because it involved quite different turfs and facilities.

Celebration Lions Sports Trust special projects man-

ager Corey Watkinson said the trust had already com-missioned extensive geo-technical work on the land, to make sure it could be re-paired.

Mr Watkinson said there were several private investors who had already pledged their support for the plan.

“We still have some funds to raise, but you can only go so far until you get sign off from council.”

The city council will need to hold an expressions of in-terest process, to find out if any other groups are also in-terested in the land.

No date has been set for that process to start, but it is expected to be complete by the end of the year. If the plan is approved, the site

works are expected to begin next year.

Mr Watkinson said sports facilities were needed in the area.

“We’re really responding to the significant community need, particularly in the east side of the city, because there is a shortage of sport and rec-reation facilities there.”

City councillor David East said there were several plans for sport facilities being de-veloped in the east.

Those include the rebuild of QE II, development of Rawhiti Domain, and plans for an indoor sports hub be-ing developed by Westmin-ster Sports.

Cr East believed the plans would complement each other.

Perspiration saturates my skin as realisation dawns - I was facing a killer puffer fish…

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Another early morning, YET AGAIN!!! I remember today we were going snorkeling (for the second time) but this time with a different company. It is another warm day, too warm a day in Aussie. As the tribe of “Heaps” stroll down the marina, we inevitably got lost. Then Connor my older brother, a man of many words, said “stick with the herd of tourists”. His words of wisdom saved us from our first peril. 1st peril: Getting lost at marina. 2nd peril: Mum seasick (NOT!! A pretty sight). 3rd peril: Putting on the wet suit (dad insisted “it will keep you warm”.... NOT) 4th peril: Finding the right fitting mask for your face, snorkel and flippers.

As you can see, there are a lot of perils but to stop you from wasting half your day reading the list I’ll go on. Anyway by then we were almost ready to hop into the warm, clear, colourful waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will list some animals in the reef and some will have a caution or dangerous note but keep in mind the chances of seeing them are slim. I did my research and I named my favourite 12 sea animals.

1 Humpback Whale 2 Green Turtle 3 Loggerhead Turtle 4 Olive Sea Snake - CAUTION 5 Whitetip Reef Shark 6 Blacktip Reef Shark 7 Reef Manta Ray 8 Red Firefish - CAUTION 9 Clown Fish 10 Humphead Maroi Wrasse 11 Blackspotted Puffer - CAUTION 12 Textile Coneshell - DANGEROUS

Non-important note/fact (opinionated note/fact) You will notice that I did not put caution on the sharks. Did you know they kill ten humans each year. We kill about 100 million of them yearly. They are very important at the top of the food chain. Remove these from the food chain and the Cortex Squid will step up and kill everything.

Any way, I’m getting off topic. We sailed on Poseidon, a snorkeling company boat. We had three snorkeling stops on the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling is actually easy as long as your mask fits snugly and doesn’t fill with water. The sea is so warm, the corals brilliant colours and there are hundreds of different fish to spot. Even mum who is a nervous swimmer just loved what she saw under the ocean. The second stop was the best as dad, Connor and I saw a Whitetip Reef Shark just cruising on the bottom. Mum fled the scene terrified.

Connor took lots of underwater photos until his hand cramped up and mum took over. I saw a Blackspotted Puffer Fish too.

The ship packed a lot of crew on for safety reasons including a marine biologist, who shared a lot of enjoyable information. Some facts to share are -

• 1% of the worlds ocean are “reefs” but they contain 25% of the worlds sealife • 0.02% of the worlds ocean is a marine reserve • There are soft and hard corals • The colour of corals is due to refraction of light rays

• Clown Anemonefish are all born male and will only change to be a dominant female. They clean the sea anemone by eating parasites, algae and zooplankton and the anemone offers protection from predators.

I spent hours in the water and was exhausted at the end of the afternoon. I went on a tour with the marine biologist at the last stop and she swam all over showing us all sorts of things including sea cucumbers, starfish and bump head parrot fish. We got a huge lunch on board the Poseidon and luckily mum wasn’t sick on the homebound trip.

It sure was a day to remember.

Parts of the estuary could be lost because of the lack of a unified plan, according to the estuary trust.

The Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust has asked the city council to create a master plan around the estuary as soon as possible.

A draft plan was created and had reached draft stages before the earthquakes, but it was aban-doned afterward.

Estuary trust chairman Bill Simpson said work had since begun at close to a dozen sites around the estuary.

He was concerned that some of the projects could damage the estuary.

“On one hand you have to be pragmatic, because work does need to go ahead. But you also have to be pretty hard-minded, because this could have a big im-pact on the estuary for a long time in the future.”

Before projects were allowed to go ahead, he wanted them to prove they would enhance the en-vironment, provide flood protec-tion and allow community access to the estuary and estuary edges for recreation.

He also wanted assurance they would not build out into the estu-ary.

“It is very important to us to make sure works on the edge

don’t encroach on the estuary it-self, because it’s limited space and once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

The city council Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Com-mittee has asked for more infor-mation from staff about the status of the draft estuary master plan.

Committee chairman Phil Clearwater said he would like to see the plan ready by December.

But he said it was likely to be a guide for people developing around the estuary, rather than hard restrictions.

“I think the plan would give best practice advice. It wouldn’t impede work, I would hope it would advance it. It would give a strategy for how these things should be done in the future.”

He said that several projects had been allowed to go ahead in

the area since the earthquakes. But he said that developers still

had to apply for consent.“The impact on their environ-

ment is considered as part of that process.”

He said he would like to see measures to control and remove pollution included in the plan, but that would have to be linked to measures in the Avon and Heath-cote rivers.

Call for estuary plan

PLAN NEEDED: The Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust would like to see a plan created to protect the estuary. INSET: Trust chairman Bill Simpson.

Linwood GP John Boyd died almost six months ago, but in the communities where he lived and worked he has not been forgotten.

Many of the children he treated in Linwood, where he worked for more than 15 years, will benefit from a grant made by Pegasus Health in his memory.

The $5000 grant to Linwood Avenue School will be used to establish mentors, who will work with vulnerable children.

Principal Gerard Direen said the school started a mentor programme several years ago, but had struggled to get enough mentors to keep it going.

The grant will allow the school to pay the costs of the programme, and to contribute to groups which organise volun-teer mentors.

He said the programme made a big impact on the lives of the pupils.

“For some of our children, having the chance to get alongside an older person who is a good role model is a very important thing, because some don’t have parents or wider fam-ily around. So they simply don’t have that sort of person in their lives.”

Dr Boyd was well known in the community, Mr Direen said.

“He was a well-known GP in the area for a number of years,

and he gave a lot of time and skill and support to a lot of families in the area.”

Pegasus Health senior clinical leader Simon Wynn Thomas said the grant was an effort to acknowledge Dr Boyd’s hard work in the community.

“We knew he felt quite pas-sionate about the health issues of young people in the com-munity where he worked, so we thought it was a good way to acknowledge him.”

A memorial seat and plaque was also unveiled in Dr Boyd’s honour last week in Mt Pleas-ant, where he lived with his wife and children.

Dr Boyd died suddenly at the age of 58, while out in his garden.

His widow, Robynanne Mil-ford, said it had been a shock to the community.

She hoped the memorial would help.

“I hope it will give some solace for his colleagues and his patients who were really shocked when he died. Hopeful-ly it will give people who knew him some comfort.”

She said the seat looked out on a view Dr Boyd had loved.

“It looked out to sea, because he was a sailor; it looked out to the mountains where he was a mountaineer and where he owned a farm; and it looked out to the estuary where he used to spend so much time on the water.”

She said it had been difficult

for his family and friends since he died, but she was glad he would be remembered for the work he did.

The memorial plaque and seat is on Rangatira Tce in Mt Pleasant.

For more information or to get involved in the Linwood Avenue School mentoring pro-gramme, contact the school.

Doctor leaves his mark

REMEMBERED: Dr John Boyd has been remembered for his work as a Linwood GP, with a memorial seat and plaque in Mt Pleasant, and a grant to benefit the children he worked with in Linwood.

Aranui residents have a chance to have their say about what social housing in the area will look like.

About 460 Housing New Zealand homes in Aranui and Bexley are due to be repaired, and about 100 new houses built to replace ones which have been demolished.

Another 30 to 40 new homes may also be built, to meet growing demand in Christ-church.

Plans for the houses were put to the community at two drop-in sessions, and a work-shop on the plans will be held next week.

Housing NZ Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Pro-gramme general manager Paul Commons said the key reservation raised at the drop in sessions was around placing a number of people together in close proximity.

“But we are aware of those concerns, and looking to miti-gate these.”

But he said that no one ar-gued about creating the homes.

“Nobody is arguing against warm, dry and brand-new homes. In fact, many told us to “just get on with it’’ and that

they “can’t wait’’ for the new housing to be built in their community. These newly-built homes will be a great improve-ment on many existing Hous-ing New Zealand homes.”

He said he was very pleased with the cross-section of people who took the time to attend the community drop-in sessions.

“Although not many tenants took the opportunity to attend, we had input and discussions from private property owners, local politicians, members of the Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society Trust board and social agencies.”

He said he would also like to hear more feedback from Housing NZ tenants.

“We really want to hear from the people who live in our houses, about what they think will work well with our plans and what things may need improving or altering.”

Consultation on the plans is open until November 12.

Information sheets are avail-able from the Aranui Library or the ACTIS office, where there are also drop-boxes for feedback.

The community workshop on the plans will be held from 6.30pm at the Aranui Library, on Tuesday next week.

After months of navigating road works, Wainoni residents now consider the roading contractors neighbours.

Eighteen McConnell Dowell road workers were invited to the Wainoni Avonside Community Services Trust Neighbourhood

Week celebrations on Wednesday. They spoke to residents about

some of the challenges of the road works in the area, and judged the roadworks-themed plates of food made for the luncheon.

Trust co-ordinator Betty Chap-man said the workers seemed to enjoy the celebrations.

“They were all just overwhelmed

with the lunch, they only expected a sausage in bread.”

Close to 30 different community groups in the area held Neigh-bourhood Week events last week.

The Burwood-Pegasus Com-munity Board granted $2727 to different groups to help pay for community gatherings, ranging from $50 to $375.

Feedback sought on social housing

More than 80 people will gather to clean up New Brighton Beach on Sunday, as part of a global campaign.

World Mission Society Church of God holds an annual Clean Up Cam-paign, with more than 2500 branches in about 170 countries taking part.

In past years the Shirley branch has cleaned up earthquake-hit areas like Dallington, and flooded suburbs like Heathcote.

This year the group is taking on New Brighton Beach, hoping to “lift the spirits of those in the commu-nity”.

The clean-up will be held on November 2 from 10.30am, starting near the pier.

Plans for a new Aranui commu-nity facility are going ahead, after positive feedback at a community meeting.

A total of $5.9 million has been set aside for the facility on Hampshire St, which will replace the demolished Aranui Wainoni Family Centre.

Construction is expected to begin next year.

Draft plans for the centre were put to the community at a meet-ing at the Aranui Community Trust building.

Several changes were made to the plans in response to the feedback, particularly around the meeting rooms.

City council facilities and infrastructure rebuild director David Adamson said the local community had significant input into how the new community and

youth centre should look.“Feedback from stakehold-

ers as part of these early design phases has resulted in a number of improvements, including moving the meeting rooms so they now face the Hampshire St shops, changing the overall layout so all of the meeting rooms have external walls and windows and increasing the size of the storage/cleaner’s room.”

In the meeting, the community

also asked for two larger meet-ing rooms to be built, rather than three smaller ones.

Mr Adamson said that would be looked at in the next phase of the design.

“The council will continue to share updates with the com-munity as the project progresses and will also be working with the community to explore artistic options for the new community centre.”

CELEBRATING CULTURE: Shirley Primary Pasifika group performing at the annual SHINE community festival, CARVER: Annabell Keith tries her hand at

limestone carving.

Shirley residents gathered in force at MacFarlane Park last week, for the SHINE Shirley Community Festival. The theme of the event was celebrating cultural diversity, and acts ranged from a Kenyan singing group to Cook Island dance. A breakdance competition was also held, as well as limestone carving, entertainment and information about the area. The festival, which is paid for by the city council and private grants, has been held annually for 12 years.

Celebrating cultural diversity in Shirley

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

I wasn’t able to write a Flame Files column last week.

I was several kilometres up a farm track on a hillside near Hur-unui where an Ohoka farmer lost his life in a controlled burn-off.

I mention this because it was another example of a lack of knowledge on just how fast a fire can grow leaving the poor victim overcome.

As a city firefighter I’ve seen this regularly over the years in the far too many fatal fires I’ve attended.

Many, in houses, would not have proved fatal with the simple installation of smoke alarms.

Without them, as in Hurunui, by the time the victims realised they were in trouble, it was too

late to escape.Last weekend there was a spate

of skips and rubbish bins deliber-ately lit in New Brighton.

If you have a commercial busi-ness in this area, or anywhere for that matter, for goodness sake please ensure skips are kept well away from buildings and wheelie bins are secured or locked away.

There are arsonists free and liv-ing in our city. Don’t make it easy for them!

A call to Ariel Place in Aranui last Sunday was a bit like a blast from the past when a waterbed started to leak and the house oc-cupants could not contain it.

We had quite a few of these ‘back in the day’ but I haven’t see one for several years.

The house was left with hose in the bladder siphoning to the out-side. All fixed!

The team at Linwood Medical Centre has always been passionate about the health of the community, and in spite of some changes to

the team, that passion and commitment to providing a high standard of health care will continue, with some exciting new developments in the pipeline.

The past few months have certainly seen a number of changes at Linwood Medical Centre. The very sad and unexpected passing of Dr John Boyd, the retirements of both Dr Robynanne Milford and Dr Tom Rose, and the pending retirement of Dr Peter Harty means that the staff have welcomed to their team several new members - Dr Clinton Newbury, Dr Grant Callaghan and Dr Bronwyn Graham. Clinton, Grant and Bronwyn are all looking forward to being part of the Linwood team and continuing the good work of their predecessors, and all are unwavering in their absolute commitment to the Linwood community. They are also delighted to announce that in 2015, they will be moving just across the road into a new, purpose-built Health and Community Centre which will be based in the Eastgate Mall. They will be located close to the library and the plans include not only a large new medical centre, but also space for many other health and community services. The Linwood Medical Centre at Eastgate will be a “one-stop-shop” where the public will be able to access a wide range of health and community services in one convenient location. This is an exciting and positive move for the community and its healthcare needs. An extensive retail selectionfor all your automotive needs

The retail outlet is continually broadening and extending its already extensive product range to suit its customers’ needs and as John

Gale explains, that is part of the philosophy of Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares.

“We hate having to say no to our customers, so that means stocking as many di erent product ranges as we can. Fortunately, we have an expansive space to work with and if there is something we don’t have in stock, we’ll go out of our way to get it in for our customer,” says John.

It has been 13 years since John Gale took over the Super Cheap Auto Spares shop in Sydenham, and in that time the store, now named Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares, has grown from strength to strength.

sydenham

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares is a one-stop-shop for all your automotive needs. All the sta are experienced in the automotive retail industry. eir commitment to customer service, combined with the extensive range of products they sell, make for no better place to shop the next time you need to replace your oil and lter, disc pads, wiper blades, anti-freeze or just need to pick up general car accessories.

John says the range of products at Super Cheap is getting larger and larger. e shop

is very competitive with other retailers and you still get the same good service.

Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares and the rest of the retailers in the shopping complex have banded together to form the Fire Station Shopping Centre, creating a name for themselves that explains exactly where they can be found on the former Sydenham Fire Station site. Gale’s Super Cheap Auto Spares is open seven days.

After being called “a lemon” and unsellable, the former Westpac Business and Community Hub in Addington, has been sold.

It will be used to house close to 5000 young people at the Canter-bury Youth Services annual Easter Camp at Spencer Park.

The hub was built in 2011, to help businesses and community groups which had lost their facilities in the earthquakes.

It cost about $5 million, and groups were able to use it free of charge.

The hub was taken down earlier this year, but failed to sell at auc-tion, with several potential buyers saying it was too big and too expen-

sive to be practical. But Canterbury Youth Services

director Mike Dodge said it was perfect for the group’s needs.

He said the group usually hired a large marquee, but it would not be available next year.

“This is exactly the same size as the one we used, but it’s far prettier. So we’re very happy with it.”

He said the structure would take several days to erect and take down each year, but that was something the group was already used to.

He did not want to say how much was paid for it.

But he said the group would look at renting it out to other groups in the future.

“We believe it will pay for itself within a few years.”

Children at Kidsfirst Early Learning Centre Aranui now have a wonderful playhouse as a welcome addition to their playground this summer. That’s thanks to Airways Corporation, who donated four of them to early childhood learning centres around the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.

A reader responds to the Pegasus Post article last week about the new mural at Brighton Mall, which cost the city council more than $30,000.

Lorraine Kerry – Thank you for the opportunity to have a say.

No, the council should not have spent that amount of money on painting the pavement.

I live in Brighton and have to say it is a bit dead at the moment, but that kind of waste is very dis-appointing to say the least. I don’t

want my rates to go up for this sort of spending.

We are all struggling, and there are things much more important than paint on the pavement, however ‘strong’ the paint might be.

We work on a high teacher to child ratio with 80% plus of our teachers qualified.

We offer 1 to 3 days no charge (conditions apply) using 20 hours ECE for 3 year olds, and offer the option of 1/2 days in our nursery.

We pride ourselves on our strong professional relationships with whanau and tamariki; this was highly commended in our lastEducation Review Office visit.

Experience Lake Terrace Kindergarten

Opening Hours7.30am-5.30pm Monday-Friday

Lake Terrace Preschool and Nursery specialise in the care of children aged 0-5 years old.

They have a separate Nursery, Preschool and Kindergarten, and provide age appropriate experiences to support your child’s learning and development.

Friendships are valued and treasured, while plenty of opportunities are provided to ensure tamariki can build and sustain relationships across the whole centre.

They spend a lot of time in and around the community, connecting with the people and places they share a neighbourhood with.

They have very strong transition programmes in, out and across their centre. These transitions are approached in a natural and supportive way. They have strong connections with the local primary schools and their transition programme supports these connections.

They offer 20 free hours to children over the age of three - up to 3 days (conditions apply)

They document and keep records of your child’s learning and development on EDUCA an online portfolio provider.

Tikanga and te reo are embedded throughout the programme to support natural learning opportunities for tamariki.

“We chose Lake Terrace for our first child just over a year ago when she turned 2. We had looked at a few other preschools, but my nephew and many of his friends went here and their parents raved about it. As

soon as we walked in we felt comfortable there. We loved the layout of the buildings and the separate age areas which focus on the developmental needs of the children in each area. The children were all happy and busy with the many activities, toys and imaginative play areas that are supplied. The routines are simple to follow and ensure a safe and supported environment for your children. There is ample staff in each area who are well organised and caring. We loved the outside play area and the opportunities for children to take risks and ‘experience life’ - eg field trips, sandwich making, gardening, observing and discussing things seen in their surrounding environment. The online Educa communication tool for Lake Terrace is a fantastic resource for preschool news, photos and stories about our wee girl. Thanks Lake Terrace for all you do for the children in your care!” – Taryn Boyte

Lake Terrace Preschool, where learning, loving and partnership go hand in hand. They invite you to stop by and experience their environment and meet their wonderful teachers and children. Call 383-4757 to organise a visit or find out more information.

More than half of us believe we’re above average when it comes to health but the country as a whole doesn’t fare too well,

according to new research by Sovereign.“Our latest research revealed 57 per cent of

Kiwis think that New Zealand, as a nation, is not very healthy, but 53 per cent believe they live a healthier lifestyle than the average New Zealander so it doesn’t apply to them,” says Sovereign chief medical o cer Dr John Mayhew.

“Interestingly, men rate themselves slightly higher than their female counterparts and 72 per cent of those in Marlborough and West Coast believe their health is above the averageNew Zealander.”

Sovereign’s research also delved into what we believe good health to be, including our understanding of what contributes to a healthy life.

“ ere are documented medical links between happiness and good health. Happier people live longer and experience less heart disease, colds, high blood pressure and other serious illnesses. At Sovereign, more than 30 per cent of our disability income claims are due to mental illness. People need to be more aware of the importance of their happiness and its contribution to our overall health,” says Dr Mayhew.

In another concerning statistic, a signi cant 66 per cent of people admitted to su ering from insomnia or broken sleep

healthy and balanced lifestyle. Stay tuned,” says Brewis-Weston.

“Supporting New Zealanders to live healthier lifestyles will not only make a di erence to each person individually, the lives of their families and communities, but to the country overall. Healthier people need less medical intervention. Healthier communities place fewer burdens on the public health system. Healthy people are happier people and have better wellbeing.”

over the last 12 months.“Not getting enough shut-eye on a regular

basis can have devastating e ects on your health, including weight gain, insulin resistance and an increased risk of accidents,” says Dr Mayhew.

Encouraged by the nding that 60 per cent of Kiwis believe they are focusing more on their health now than they did a year ago, Sovereign has launched a new campaign inspiring New Zealanders to take charge of their health and understand the four essentials of a healthy lifestyle: exercise, eating well, sleep and happiness.

Sovereign CEO Symon Brewis-Weston explains the ‘Life. Take charge’ campaign is not aimed at telling Kiwis how to be healthier, it is about giving them tools to do it.

“We have decided it’s time to break the insurance industry mould and begin a movement that encourages Kiwis to take control of their health proactively before they need our help xing them. Over the coming months, we’ll literally be giving New Zealanders tools that will help them have a

MONEY

Buying a house is a lengthy, stressful process.

Just when you think it is all over, and before funds are released to your solici-tor, your lender will ask how you want to structure your mortgage.

You will probably have had little time to consider this and yet the structure of your mortgage can have significant implications.

Mortgages vary in terms of how repayments are made and how the interest rate is set.

There are three basic types:•Table mortgage – This is the most common type of mortgage, on which you repay both the principal and interest over a fixed period.

You can have a floating interest rate or fix your interest rate for a period of time, giving you certainty of

what your repayments are.Fixing can lead to penal-

ties if you repay your mort-gage earlier by increasing your repayments or paying lump sums.•Interest only mortgage– With this type of mort-gage, you pay back only the interest for a fixed period of time. This is useful if your mortgage repayments are very high, if you have a loss

of income, or if buying an investment property.•Line of credit, or revolv-ing credit – This type of loan works a bit like an overdraft. You are required to pay the interest owing on the balance of the loan each month. The interest rate is floating. You can reduce the amount of interest you pay by keeping your savings in your line of credit. You can divide your mortgage into two or three different amounts with a mixture of types of mortgage and with table mortgages fixed for different periods.

Your bank or mortgage broker can help advise you on the best structure, but don’t leave it until the last minute!

Consider mortgagestructure carefully

Wanganui Chronicle Thursday, June 13, 2013 31

It’s simply amatter ofstretching your targets

RussellBellBUSINESS ZEN

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting

and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.

Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving

these investments overseas. If your overseas investments

have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,

particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an

overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some

circumstances be exempt from this

requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share

portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,

having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew

Zealand accountant or financialadviser on the implications ofleaving investment assets overseasis highly recommended.

I want a qualification that is most likely to get me a job...

[Edition datE]2

Being a recent school leaver, I decided I wanted to take my dream career further and looked into study options for Early Childhood. I had attended

a food safety course that my workplace had put me through which was held at the Aoraki Polytechnic, and I loved the environment!  I found a course that took my interest that had a mid-year start. I enrolled and completed the Certificate in Parenting and Care of Children, and then went on to further my studies by enrolling in the Certificate in Early Childhood Studies.

My studies are so relevant to the Early Childhood industry, covering everything from having the ability to communicate effectively with children, having knowledge and skills in an Early Childhood sector, u n d e r s t a n d i n g

Three points to ponder Clever writers can earn substantial fees.Translating English into other languages

has traps for the unwary.Proofreaders who understand two

languages are valuable people in exporting, document t ranslating and book publishing.

“We show all our writing students how to get their articles, stories, poems or instruction books published,” says Brian Morris, Principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “They also get thoroughly proofread before being released.”

If interested in writing or proofreading work at home, phone 0800 801 994  and ask for the free report #805, “When You Have A Passion For Story Telling”. Whether your topic is food, electronics, cars, cooking, gardening, sport or business, there is satisfaction in getting your book written and published.

The Homestead is registered as a Category 2 historic place. From the registration details, Risingholme has architectural significance as a rare

example of the domestic work of architect Maxwell Bury. The only other registered dwellings known to have been designed (at least in part) by Bury are Chippenham Lodge in Christchurch (Category 2) and the Professorial Houses at Otago University.

Risingholme was built in 1864 by William and Mary Reeves, parents of politician

Celebrating 70 years AS A COMMUNITY CENTRE

This year marks the 70th year that Risingholme Community Centre has been operating as a community centre, and the 150th anniversary of the

Risingholme Homestead in Opawa.William Pember Reeves. After the death of William Reeves in 1891, the house had several further private owners until 1943, when it was purchased and presented to the City of Christchurch by J R McKenzie for the “health, amusement and instruction of the public”.

After a public meeting in St Mark’s schoolroom, Opawa, on February 24, 1944, the Risingholme Community Centre Incorporated Society was formed. Dr H E Hansen, the chairman of the committee who set up at this historic meeting, had been a leader in adult education for many years and under his guidance, the committee established its first activities: a nursery play centre, a room for the Plunket Society, drama, play reading and study/discussion groups.

Within six months, the first director W Ross Edwards, was appointed and by July 1945, an energetic programme was in place, including a Young People’s Club, woodwork classes and bridge and garden groups.

The temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa.

The Homestead

The people who write advertising slogans are clever with words. They can make a simple frozen chicken hugely appealing.

A clever wordsmith named Ed McCabe was paid a substantial fee to write these 10 words, “It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken”.

This slogan for Perdue Chickens helped sell 15 million frozen chickens through American supermarkets in one year. Yes, the chickens were top quality meat.

But the Perdue export department got it wrong. They translated the slogan into Spanish as, “It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate”.

Hispanic and Mexican cooks were not amused.

By 1946, the committee had decided to build a hall so that the centre could accommodate more activities and so began a succession of fairs, fetes and other fundraising activities that finally led to the construction of the hall/theatre and later the craft rooms at the back of the park.

Year 1947 saw both the completion of the hall and the arrival of Dorothy Crumpton as the new director, and these two factors led to an increased level of activity at Risingholme. Drama was a focus, two choirs were started, films were shown and classes which had begun under the auspices of both the Christchurch Technical College and the WEA expanded.

By 1954 the craft rooms were completed to accommodate the growing number of craft classes, such as woodwork and pottery - it was also, sadly, the year that Dorothy died after a period of declining health.

It was then that Jeanne Edgar became director and this began a long and stable period for the centre as Jeanne maintained and gradually built on the activities already in place until her retirement in 1983.

Jeanne Edgar was succeeded by Raewyn Cooke, who brought many positive changes to the way Risingholme operates. Through the energy and vision of Raewyn, the centre became independent in 2004. In April 2007, Raewyn Cooke was succeeded by Maryke Fordyce as director.

The community education programme

has continued to flourish, now working collaboratively with a number of schools and community groups. Risingholme is also host to a variety of independent community groups and activities.

As a result of the recent earthquakes in Canterbury, the Homestead and hall were damaged and is currently in the City Council’s Facilities Repair programme, with no known date for repairs to start. The centre is seen as a priority and funding was committed to repair the buildings by the Council, according to the Mayor’s news release on September 4.

The centre was also successful in acquiring a grant from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust to erect a temporary facility to serve the local community in Opawa. This lovely facility is now completed and already hosting a range of classes and will be officially opened on October 23.

excellent FOODINNOVATIVE CUISINEexcellent service

Stunning food coupled with a chance to shop makes a visit to Urban Corner Cafe simply irresistible.

The cafe now has an assortment of trendy trinkets and modern decor home wares on display that are well worth a browse. From chunky fashion jewellery through to contemporary iron wall art, there’s bound to be that perfect something for someone special.

“Our gift selection is similar to what you’ll find in specialist gift shops in the malls, but at a fraction of the price,” said Katrina Hargen, co-owner.

Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design.

The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.

The left side of the structure houses The Bower... a lovely modern styled bar decked out with booth and leaner seating, a gaming room, and fabulous sun drenched sheltered outdoor area. The bar offers a wide range of regular entertainment including live music and live sports coverage.

To the right side of the structure is The Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant.

Urban Corner has a wide attraction. Opening from 9am it offers a great array of gourmet cabinet food available to eat in or takeaway and great espresso, as well as a la carte lunch and dinner menus. It’s decor is tastefully bright and breezy, and the dining area opens out to an al fresco dining deck that steps down to two safe and secure kiddies play area.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has just launched a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.

Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in The Bower bar.

Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within.
