DESTROYED: A tic tac toe game was set alight as part of a “terrible weekend of vandalism” at Linwood North School. Above: Concrete-based pencils were on display for less than a day before they were stolen and broken. Below: The glass on the school social worker’s door was smashed.

FRASER WALKER-PEARCE

Vandals have wreaked havoc at Linwood North School for the second time in three weeks.

Principal Sandra Smith (inset) has pleaded for vandals to stop targeting the school after what she called a “terrible weekend of vandalism”.

A fire was lit on the adven-ture playground and rocks smashed through the social worker’s office, last weekend.

Piles of rubbish including supermarket trolleys, “rot-

ting” mattresses and furniture were left for staff to find in the school car park.

Mrs Smith said she was angry that the school had once again been targeted.

Only weeks earlier, security cameras were installed after vandals ripped out large con-crete decorative pencils a day after they were installed scat-tering them across the grounds.

The cameras failed to nab the vandals this time round, be-cause it occurred out of range.

She said police had been

notified but as of Friday morning had not yet visited the school.

“I would say it’s a workload issue – there’s an awful lot go-ing on for them,” she said.

Police did not return calls to the Pegasus Post.

Mrs Smith said she was fearful there would be more fires over the upcoming school holidays.

Repairing the damage came at a financial cost to the school.

“This money should be go-ing towards the children, not

replacing broken windows and burnt playgrounds.

She said the school wider community was frustrated with the “stupidity” of a few, with the school grounds popular after hours for parents teaching their children how to ride bicycles.

“It’s silly because it’s only a minority of the community that are behaving this way,” she said.

“It’s a real shame because we got a glowing report from the Education Review Office and it’s just frustrating,” she said.

New plans for the QE II replace-ment could be on the cards after a groundswell of pleas for a larger facility.

City councillor Glenn Livingstone said he and other elected representatives must revisit plans for the Eastern Sports and Recreation Centre, after an outcry from residents who say the proposed 25m pool will not be enough to meet the needs of the east.

“Elected staff and representa-tives cannot ignore it anymore,” he said.

The news comes after Dal-lington resident Emma Jamieson presented her petition with about 100 signatures to get another 35m pool added to the plans at last week’s Burwood-Pegasus Community Board meeting.

Cr Livingstone said the city council may need to look at a different way of tackling the project.

“If that means another de-sign or a different construction method, such as a stainless Stella

design . . . so be it,” he said.

Ms Jamieson (right) and Keep QEII in the East chairwoman Jo Zervos have questioned when the 35m pool was removed from the plans.

Ms Jamieson said: “I’m con-cerned that the swimming pool size has been reducing since the start of the process. It’s at the heart of everything we’re hoping

for with this new sports centre.”Cr Livingstone said he did not

know when it had been removed.City council manager recre-

ation and sports John Filsell said the pool was removed after updated cost on the project found there was insufficient money for both.

He did not give a date of when it was removed or if the commu-nity were consulted.

In March, city councillors ap-proved the scope for the facil-ity, which is earmarked to cost $30.5m

Mr Filsell said the 35m pool was removed due to cost and provision of other water spaces across the council’s aquatic network.

Ms Zervos said she was “over it” after she met with the com-munity board and council staff on Thursday

“It’s the same things that are going round in circles and no progress is being made. It’s the same deal with the Commu-nity Advisory Group last year. Now 12 months on, nothing has changed,” she said.

ROADWORKS UPDATERoadworks to Queenspark Drive between Chadlington St and Radiata Ave, began last Tuesday. Minor roadworks are under way and vehicle access is expected to be limited until tomorrow. The repairs are expected to finish on Friday, December 18. Roadworks that were scheduled along Queenspark Drive, between property No 170 and 148 has now been delayed until early 2016. Meanwhile, a progressive road closure is scheduled to be in place along Carisbrooke St, Aranui, from today. It will affect people from property No 20 Carisbrooke St, heading north towards Soberton St. The work is in place so that vacuum wastewater repairs can proceed. The project is scheduled to finish December 14.

DRIVER SERIOUSLY HURTA truck drove off the road and hit a tree, putting the driver in a serious condi-tion on Wednesday night. St John was alerted to the incident at the intersection of Quinns Rd and Voss St, in Shirley, and took the driver in his 60s, to Christchurch Hospital.

IN LIMBO: An outcry from residents could see QE II’s replacement get a 35m pool put back in the plans.

Readers respond to article on call for a bigger QEII replacement.

S A Kavanagh: I find it hard to believe that some of our com-munity board members and the city council still can’t decide on what we should have as a replacement for our old QE II.

The answer to me seems so simple.

Especially considering that two new schools are being built there – as well as a new super school at Aranui and all the residents in the east.

This number equates to a huge amount of people wanting to use one 25m pool.

Come on, it’s not rocket sci-ence to realise that is totally inadequate.

I gave up swimming at Gra-ham Condon for this reason – too many school kids using it, so you never get any space in the lanes or aqua jogging.

So one pool at QE II would be exactly the same, everyone fighting for space and many disgruntled users vowing never to return.

I am very disappointed in those two board members who think one pool is adequate – and any other councillors who ap-pear totally disinterested in the plight of us swimmers in the east.

They will definitely not be get-

ting my vote in the election next year.

When you consider what we had at the old QE II (and that did not have schools on the prem-ises), any sensible person can see that one pool is just a giant waste of time and money.

As I understand it, we were promised two pools, same as Jel-lie Park, so the council has gone back on their word.

It is also saying that we on the east are not important enough in their eyes to warrant having a decent aquatic facility for our children, adults, seniors and visi-tors to enjoy.

We will never use their hugely expensive metro centre, built in the wrong part of town, with little parking available.

H Brown: In 1948 the Ministry of Education said that every child in their first six years should have the opportunity to learn to swim.

QE II, prior to the earth-quakes, together with the school pools managed the situation quite well.

The facilities now, planned for the 6000 or so primary school children in the east, do not re-motely approach their needs.

They have been restricted in their swimming tuition since the earthquakes. Now with two large secondary schools in the vicini-ty, there will not be much chance of anyone else getting much time in the proposed pools.

K Forbes-Henry: I am ex-tremely disappointed to hear that it has been deemed by the plan-ning team that one 25m pool is sufficient for the needs of people in the east.

With seven schools in the im-mediate area, this alone shows that one 25m pool will not be enough to accommodate and promote water skills and sports to these communities.

Two of these schools will be on site and expecting they will be able to enhance their aqua programme with the use of the new pool complex.

Add to all the schools, the full demographic of the area.

Early bird swimmers, com-petitive swimmers, water polo, canoe polo, underwater diving hockey, synchronized swim-ming, learn to swim from babies to adults, aqua-cise classes, rehab and recovery sessions, people with disabilities, leisure and recreation, pool parties and you quickly see that one 25m pool is highly inadequate.

The above activities were all part of the QE II complex pre- earthquake and all these groups have suffered with lack of or no facilities being available since.

I ask the board to take a deep breathe and seriously re-consider the true needs of the people.

They need a plan that will cater for all the community, now and into the future.

K Arnold: I would like to push the case for more pool space for school children and adult swimmers at the QE ll pool complex.

School children need the pool for their swimming les-sons, while the adult swimmers, many of them elderly, need to use the facilities for health rea-sons and to keep active and fit.

The two high schools will be present at most times and we could use at least two 25m pools or even better one 25m pool and a 50m pool.

I’m sure that most people would agree that this scenario makes sense.

They say the reason for not being able to adopt another pool is money.

Seemingly the reason being that some of QE ll insurance money went to enable the town pool to be built.

Surely a suburban pool built on the same space as QE ll was originally used far more than the one in town, where parking is very limited – not to mention parking costs.

We need more pool space at QE II.

A fishing deck has been proposed as a way to deal with tensions on New Brighton Pier.

Residents have sought a ban on fishing off the pier because they feel intimidated and unsafe due to the number of people fishing in the weekends.

Burwood-Pegasus ward city councillor David East said an Auckland architect is working on a design for a fishing deck, slightly below the pier.

He said the deck would let people walk past freely without

having to worry about avoiding the platform, while also giving people space to fish.

The design, being done at no cost, is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Last month fishery officers caught a man with over three times the legal limit of paddle crabs.

The community board asked city council staff to investigate options for resolving the

tensions on the pier, including looking at banning fishing, last month.

The report is due to be completed this month.

Cr East said he did not want to reveal who the architect was.

“They’re doing me a favour for free – so I don’t want to put them in the spotlight,” he said.

Cr East said he explored the option of having the fishing deck built slight above the pier.

“I don’t think that’s totally viable. It would have to be built slightly under the pier,” he said.

Increased accessNew Brighton beach is about to be made more wheelchair friendly. As of November 28, two beach-accessible wheelchairs will be permanently based in the New Brighton Mall, behind Ray White Real Estate. There will be no cost to use them. Since June, the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force Community Trust and SmileDial have been working in partnership to bring these wheelchairs to New Brighton beach.

Raising the barParklands playgrounds

deserve an “X Factor”. Parklands Residents Association chairwoman Elissa Smith showed the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board four photos of the parks currently in Parklands, and described how they all contain similar play equipment. Ms Smith showed the board her ideas regarding what X-Factor parks might have. She said children aged nine to 14 should be challenged when they come to the park, rather than having equipment that is meant for younger children.

Call for coastal hubBurwood-Pegasus ward city

councillor Glenn Livingstone has asked the city council to host a coastal information hub. The city council pulled the coastal erosion chapter out of the district

plan after outcry. About 6000 properties are said to be under threat from coastal erosion over the next century. Cr Livingstone said the hub would serve the eastern suburbs in an informal way. He said council staff would divide their time between the Shirley and New Brighton centres, to cover as much ground as possible.

Where to scatter ashesThe Burwood-Pegasus

Community Board received information at its Monday meeting asking for a bylaw to be passed to make it illegal to scatter human ashes in certain places, like rivers, parks, or other often-used public spaces. However, city councillor David East said this may be hard to police. The board was advised by city council staff that it would not be deemed a criminal offence, but more seen as an opportunity to inform a family on other places where, in future, those ashes should be scattered.

You’re involved with the Lions, Santa’s workshop and a Justice of the Peace. You’re a busy man is that fair to say?

Yes, I am involved with all of those things. I do other voluntary work at the police kiosk at Cathedral Square every Thursday. But not this Thursday because this week is our blokes’ lunch day, which we have once a month. This week we’re going to lunch in Governors Bay. I live by myself, so it’s good to go out.

How did you become involved with Santa’s workshop?

I had 12 months as the district manager for the Lions in 2000, and I was asked to be the Lions representative on the committee for Santa’s workshop. So I said yes I’d do that. I didn’t realise at the time that we were voting in a new chairman. My name was put forward. Mine was the only name put forward so I was elected chairman in 2000. So now I’ve

been chairman for 15 years! You sound like a very giving

It’s a workshop held at Shirley Intermediate, in one of the wood shop rooms. We used to have it at the Shirley Community Cen-tre, but that was pretty destroyed after the earthquakes. So that’s where we meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Sounds like great fun! What do you make?

We make wooden trains with two carriages, push and pull along toys. This year we’ve start-ed sewing dolls and their clothes and the Lions Club makes bed-ding for the dolls. There’s also a coloured blocks set, a series of racing cars and wooden trucks, noughts and crosses boards and spinning tops. This year we cre-

ated 1000 toys, which is our goal for every year. We’ve also added Chinese checkers this time.

Wow, 1000 toys every year.

Have you ever delivered a toy you’ve made yourself to someone?

No, I haven’t. But I have

taken several lots to play groups, kindergartens and the like, so they’re used by a whole range of children.

New Brighton Lions member Dick Johns has helped to create 1000 toys to be distributed to children all over Christchurch in time for Christmas. He talks to Fraser Walker-Pearce about being part of Santa’s workshop

Are you also involved with the Lions of New Brighton? For how long?

I’ve been involved with them for 30 years. It makes me wonder where all the time’s gone! It’s great because it’s a mixed group of male and female and I enjoy the fellow-ship with people that are like-minded. It was my next door neighbour that was a member at the Lions in New Brighton who took me along the first time, and I’ve loved it ever since.

What’s the best part of being a Lion?

It’s the opportunity to serve the community and individuals. We had a young lad who we helped to go to the University Games in South Korea this year. He came along and spoke last night, and told us of his achievements in athletics, and that he was aspiring to be included in the next Olympics.

Were you born and bred in Canterbury?

Yes, I was, been here all my life.

Would you change it?No way! Wouldn’t

change that even if I could. I have four adult kids, three of which live in Christ-church and one on the Gold Coast. We’re a very family-oriented group. We are always having family meals and we’ve kept that family feeling all the way through.

Have you ever trav-elled outside of New Zealand?

My wife and I trav-elled to England 15 years ago to attend the inter-national convention in Birmingham. After that we travelled through Scotland which was great. Otherwise we’ve been to Australia too many times to count.

Where is your favou-rite spot in the world?

Oh, that’s a hard one. It would have to be some-where in the South Island, definitely. I very much like North Canterbury. I’d say Amberley and the whole Waipara area, the country-side I just love.

BRIGHTON RAMBLERS WALKING GROUP

The Ramblers group was formed in 1991. It was created out of a local church nearly 25 years ago. The group meetS on a Tuesday and typically walk the flat areas around Christchurch, with an occassional hill walk.

Walks tend to be three to four hours at a time with a stop for morning tea and lunch on the way. There are four original members still in the group today – some trav-elling from as far away as Lincoln, Kaiapoi and Beckenham.

Over the years, the group has enjoyed climbing Mts Richard-son, Oxford and Grey, with some members being inspired to be more adventurous and have walked the Milford, Abel Tasman and Queen Charlotte tracks. The only costs as-sociated are for car pooling, where a petrol charge applies. Phone Marlene Crocker: 388 1115

A former Shirley Boys’ High School student, who suffered an injury to his neck playing rugby is a finalist for a courage award.

Cody Everson, 20, debuted for the Wheel Blacks in March against Australia in a five-game series. More recently he played in a three-week competition in England, Singapore and Japan.

Cody was 15 when he was playing for the Shirley first 15 rugby team against Christ’s Col-lege. He landed awkwardly on his neck in a tackle, which left him paralysed from the chest down.

He is one of three finalists in the AttitudeLive Courage in Sport category, with Selwyn Jensen and Otis Horne from the North Island. He is also a finalist in the People’s Choice category.

Cody will travel to Auckland on December 3 for the cer-emony.

He said the most important thing to do after a serious injury like the one he sustained is to keep positive.

“I’ve always been a deter-mined person and I love chal-lenges. Realising that I won’t walk again made me more determined to get into another

sport. You can’t quit what you want to do and what you love – you just have to get out there and do it,” he said.

Cody said he would be taking some friends to the ceremony with him.

“Yeah, I’m pretty happy, I

get to go to Auckland, so very happy,” he said.

The Wheel Blacks missed out a chance to qualify for the paralympics recently, but Cody is excited they will have another chance in April.

“With the bunch of guys that we have now I think it is defi-nitely possible for us to qualify then,” he said.

But like eyesight, it can deteriorate over time, lessening that enjoyment and creating frustration, stress and isolation.

Hearing loss can affect people at any age, with 10 per cent of New Zealanders experiencing some form of hearing loss.

A reduction in hearing ability does not usually happen suddenly – it is a gradual process that we don’t realise is happening, although others around us do.

Having difficulty joining in conversations with family and friends or mishearing what people say, needing to turn the television up

Like our eyesight, hearing is one of our most precious assets contributing to our enjoyment of

life and our relationships.

to levels that are uncomfortable for others, or not hearing knocks at the door are all indications our hearing is deteriorating. Tinnitus or ringing in the ears can also be a sign of hearing loss.

While loss of hearing is a natural part of ageing, other factors that affect our hearing include hereditary conditions, exposure to excessive noise over time, such as loud music or machinery, certain medications and head injuries.

Experienced audiologists Carolyn Gordon and Carolyn Till of Gordon and Till Audiology recommend having your hearing checked regularly to maintain your hearing ability.

“Research has shown that if you haven’t had your hearing checked by a professional within the last five years, your risk of mishearing increases by around 23 per cent,” Carolyn Gordon says.

“We have also successfully managed many cases of bothersome tinnitus, and highly recommend hearing aids for people with

tinnitus who also have hearing loss. Up to 70 per cent of people with hearing loss and tinnitus notice a reduction in their tinnitus when fitted with hearing aids.”

Having hearing aids fitted in the early stages of hearing loss will enable you to

continue to enjoy communicating with others. It will make you feel more confident in social situations, enhance your quality of life and improve your outlook for good hearing and understanding over the long term,” says Carolyn Till.

The audiologists point out that today’s technologically advanced

hearing aids are also much smaller and more discreet, so they correct your

hearing without anyone noticing you are wearing them.

Gordon and Till Audiology offers a free 14-day, no-obligation trial of hearing aids. In most instances, government subsidies and other funding is available when purchasing.

To make an appointment, call into 701 Barbadoes St, phone 385 6036 or visit the website www.gtaudiology.co.nz. They also have visiting clinics at Halswell and Leeston.

A foot injury hasn’t stopped Avondale resi-dent Madi Williams rac-ing towards her dream of representing New Zealand.

Madi finished third at the Auckland duathlon on November 15 in spite of being diagnosed prior to the race with plantar fasciitis (inflamation of tissue across the bottom of the foot).

Madi said she had been unable to train in the lead-up to the event and couldn’t even man-age to warm up prior to the race start.

The duathlon doubled as a qualification race for NZ age group selec-tion towards the world championships next year in Spain.

Madi is currently awaiting confirmation from Triathlon NZ that her third place finish has satisfied the selection criteria for her to gain a spot on the team.

The Villa Maria winery course provided a tough challenge for Madi, with both a windy bicycle course and some steep hill climbs, but overall she was pleased with how she finished.

Madi said this is the closest she has ever been to her dream of wearing

the silver fern.“When I found out the

criteria for selection I looked up some previous race times and figured I should go for it,” she said.

Time spent on the bicycle as training for rowing has seen Madi only recently take up the sport.

“I have always been quite good at running and after the Canterbury secondary triathlon was changed to a duathlon where I got second I decided to stick with it,” she said.

Madi said both her parents have been the driving factors in her sporting career to date.

“My mum used to do triathlons so I have always liked the idea of multi-sport races – the best advice she ever gave me was ‘transitions win races’.

“My dad is a bit of a sports freak so he has had a lot to do with my com-petitiveness,” she said.

Madi is now on crutches as a result of the race and said she will be taking a break from running over the next few weeks.

Injury permitting her next race will be at the national secondary schools athletics cham-pionship at the start of December.

Leaving a legacy and helping to save lives

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

[Edition datE]2

In the middle of a cold night, Christchurch grandmother Kathleen wakes suddenly and calls out in distress to her husband, she is struggling to breathe and her heart

is racing at a frightening pace.Rushed to the emergency department,

Kathleen is given oxygen and her heart beat stabilised. The following day, as she readies herself for a trip to hospital and a chest x-ray, the same scary symptoms occur and Kathleen is admitted to intensive care.

“It was extremely scary being admitted to intensive care with my heart racing – I thought I was going to die” Kathleen recalls.

During her two-day stay, doctors diagnose Kathleen with heart failure. This is a condition where the heart cannot pump blood the way it should or cannot send blood to the rest of the body with enough force.

The Christchurch Heart Institute was researching the effectiveness of a surgical procedure called renal denervation as a treatment for certain types of heart failure. This trial involved a simple catheter procedure to remove excess nerve signals to and from the kidneys.

Kathleen joined the trial in November 2013 and had the renal denervation procedure done at Christchurch Hospital.

In the years since then, she has been free of any episodes of the ‘terrifying’ racing heart.

“Since taking part in the trial I sleep better knowing that my heart doesn’t race anymore” says Kathleen.

“Although Kathleen attributes the improvement of her condition to the study,

Research trial procedure eases grandmother’s ‘racing heart’ terror

we cannot be certain that her improvement arose from the experimental use of renal denervation, or the changes in her medication as well; and these may be the true cause of her improvements. The benefits or otherwise of renal denervation in heart failure remain uncertain and it requires more research before any routine application in Heart Failure is established” states the Christchurch Heart Institute’s Director, Professor Richards.

Funding for this trial was provided through the Health Research Council and Medtronic

“Since taking part in the trial I sleep better knowing that my heart doesn’t

race anymore” says Kathleen.

Just Kids Preschool is a community based preschool and family/whãnau are at the forefront of what we do and what we believe in.

We believe that warm, caring, reciprocal relationships are the foundation of our work with young children, whanau, our Just Kids teaching family and our community.

We support open communication and aim to welcome, include and respond to our children, whãnau and community in non-judgmental and collaborative ways. This allows us to hear the aspirations and beliefs of our parents and whãnau and for those aspirations to be reflected within our programme.

We acknowledge the diversity of our community and aim to work in encouraging ways, which ensure that every child, family and whãnau is accepted, included and feels a sense of belonging within our centre. We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the partnerships and responsibilities inherent

within this document. Te reo and Tikanga practices are woven into our daily programme.

We respect and acknowledge that parents and whãnau are their child’s first teachers and that each child brings with them individuality, unique learning characteristics and culture from their home. We see all children as capable leaners and aim to provide a programme where learning and play is child initiated and the concept of ako is encouraged. We believe that learning is a life long journey and within our programme we support our children to contribute, participate, explore & experiment in their learning. We believe that to work is to play, to play is to learn and to learn is to live. We ensure that play is a fundamental feature of our daily programme.

Our teachers empower children to choose, think and take responsibilities for themselves and aspects of their learning. Our teachers consider learning as a holistic experience and plan for and assess children’s learning using Te Whãriki – The Early Childhood Curriculum. We aim to provide children with the foundations that they will need for successful future learning.

Our teachers strive to work as a professional team who value one and other and the journey of ongoing learning together. We work with integrity and aim to review and consistently improve the quality of learning experiences and our learning environment for our children, family/whãnau, our Just Kids teaching family and community.

Ako – Means to both teach & to learn. Te Reo – Maori lanugauge. Tikanga – Maori traditional rules & culture. Holistic – A holistic approach to learning takes into account all of the dimensions of a child’s learning & development, and realises that these are interrelated & interconnected.
